Is Korra The Last Avatar? The Complete Answer

An Avatar is reincarnated again and again in the Avatar cycle, as we learned in Avatar: The Last Airbender. The Avatar cycle is based on the four seasons. And like the passing of four seasons in a cyclic order, each time an Avatar dies, he is reincarnated in the next kingdom. The order of the Avatar cycle is Fire, Air, Water, and Earth in the order of how the first Avatar mastered the elements. After Wan bonded with the spirit of light Raava, the Avatar was created. And after this, the cycle continued for about the next 10,000 years till the next harmonic convergence. During this event, Raava was extracted by Unalaq and severely injured, breaking the Avatar cycle. Making many fans ask the question, “Is Korra the Last Avatar.”

To most straightforward answer to this question is “no” Korra is not the last Avatar. And in this article, we will look at some of the reasons that led us to this conclusion.

Historical Perspective

When Wan bonded with Raava, that made him the first Avatar, and during his lifetime, he sent all the spirits back to the spirit world. And reassured the spirits that as the Avatar he will be the bridge between the spirit world and the human world. It was his lifelong struggle that led him to this decision. At this time, humans used to live in sea lion cities, and the members of each city had different bending abilities based on what the sea lion had taught them.

Wan was the first person to master all the four elements, and when he returned to his people. He found out that humans and spirits are always fighting with each other, which led him to send the spirits back to their world and seal the portals. After this, the humans that were left behind had different abilities to bend. And they started fighting amongst themselves for complete dominion over each other. Wan spent the rest of his life trying to propagate peace between these people. And even died on a battlefield doing so but to no avail.

The later Avatars decided that the only way the world can live in peace is that the people with different bending abilities should be separated and never allowed to mix up to maintain peace. These groups that were separated formed the basis of the four nations namely Fire, Air, Water, and Earth.

And Firelord Sozin used this information about the Avatar cycle to destroy all the Air Nomads. And began the hundred-year war. Because according to this cycle the next Avatar would be from the Air Nation.

Avatar Cycle

The Avatar Cycle which was formed when Wan and Raava bonded together, was broken after Unalak or The Dark Avatar injured Raava severely. This led to Raava exiting Korra’s body breaking this cycle. But Korra later refused with Raava in the last moments of the Harmonic convergence starting the new Avatar cycle.

Meaning that she has essentially severed her connection with her past selves that started from Wan and ended at Aang. She could not establish a spiritual connection with any of the old Avatars due to the breaking of the old Avatar cycle.

Is Korra The Last Avatar

No Korra is not the last Avatar because she was able to bond herself again with the spirit of Raava giving birth to a new Avatar Cycle. If she had not been able to bond with Raava during this harmonic convergence. Then she would have been the last Avatar. She is now the creator of a new Avatar cycle, meaning that the next Avatar born after her would not be able to call upon anybody from the past Avatar selves or Avatars from the old process.

And will only have the guidance of Korra to guide them through their lives. So, as the old cycle began from Wan, the new process started from Korra. It essentially means that she is the first Avatar of the news cycle.

Korra is visibly upset and even feels jealous of Asami. Asami then invites Korra to the estate as well, which she agrees to after insistence from Bolin and Mako.

When Korra arrives at the estate, she is shown the Satomobile test-drive track, and Asami offers to take her for a spin. Lin’s Action Against Sato

After hearing Korra’s statements, Lin and Tenzin begin to discuss that Sato certainly has the means to sponsor Amon. And they go to the Sato estate for investigation and his factory where no connection to equalists is found. Korra then receives a tip from a man who tells them to meet under the bridge near the factory. Their contact is a worker at Future Industries and a member of the Equalists movement. And reveals that Hiroshi is secretly funding the Equalists. And that he is the one who manufactured the new electrified gloves. The Equalists wore these gloves while attacking the Pro-bending Arena. And it was with the help of these gloves that the attackers were able to neutralize the Republic City Police, that otherwise use a chi-blocking suit.

He also reveals that Hiroshi is working on something new to make the Equalists even more powerful. And also reveals that the reason that Lin did not find anything in the factory because Hiroshi has another factory. And also discloses the location of the secret factory to be under the Sato estate. Tenzin, Korra, and Lin reach the estate. And investigate with the help of Asami, Mako, and Bolin and uncover a secret tunnel to the factory. Lin orders Mako, Bolin, and a now visibly distressed Asami to stay there. While Korra, she, and Tenzin investigate the matter.

But Mako and Bolin arrive to rescue them, but they get trapped until Asami confronts her father. Hiroshi tells her that he is doing this because the Benders took her mother away. And pleads with her to join in on the cause as well. And also hand her a glove. But to his surprise, Asami uses the glove to electrocute Hiroshi himself so Team Avatar to escape.

Mature Elements

The reason behind Hiroshi supporting the Equalists is revealed to be a very genuine one. And gives his character more depth explaining why he chose to side with the villains. Moreover, the reason why Amon is against the Benders is also revealed in a later episode.

While in The Legend Of Korra Season 1, Episode 7, we see that both Korra and Asami are attracted to Mako. The romantic element is also very mature because all the characters are quite old. While in comparison, the leads of Avatar: The Last Airbender are quite young for a romantic angle to be used correctly in the show.

The next day Korra and Asami join Tenzin and Zhu Li in their efforts to rehabilitate the refugees from Kuvira’s war. At the same time, President Raiko is more concerned about the elections.

The first time we see Katara. She is in the traditional water tribe uniform with a huge jacket and gloves in the first episode. Her outfit included a jacket and gloves as she was on the South Pole at the time. And the cold there would have been unbearable without additional clothing such as jackets and gloves.

Afterward, we see her in the summer iteration of the traditional Water tribe outfit. She has also styled her hair in accordance with the traditional hairstyle of the Water Nation. Katara wore this summer costume for most of the series. But when the Team Avatar went to the Fire Nation they had to change their costumes to blend in. The reason they went to the Fire Nation was to gather intelligence about the Nation before their attack on “The Day Of The Black Sun”.

Katara Fire Nation Outfit

Katara wore her Fire Nation Outfit with the rest of the team so that they could blend in with the rest of the general population. The reason for wearing this outfit is that because the Team Avatar was primarily on enemy soil, and they wanted to avoid any extra attention. So these outfits provided the perfect cover and reduced their chances of getting recognized by the Fire Nation soldiers.

Not only did Katara wear this outfit but she also rearranged her hairstyle according to the Fire Nation customs. She made a top-knot hairstyle instead of her iconic hair-loopies. The outfit and the hairstyle was also paired with bracelets and arm guards as well as a fire nation necklace as well.

Katara Hair: Different Ways Katara Wore Her Hair

All through the series, Katara wore her hair in different ways. This was based on the environment she found herself in or what was happening around her at the time.

Katara Hair Loopies

Hair loopies, as Sokka would later refer to Katara’s hair as is one of the signature patterns that Katara wore her hair although the stores. She wore different variants of the same hairdo all through the series.

Hair loopies are a type of hairstyle that is worn in the Northern and Southern Water Tribes. Although these two halves of the water tribe wear the pattern, their hair typically varies in slight ways.

The term refers to the trend among Water Tribe women to wear two loops in their hair. These loops can be formed by pulling back strands of hair on either side of the head and fasten them at the back. This is typically how Katara wore her hair most of the time. A variation of this style is to braid the pulled back strands, like Yagoda, the healer in the Northern Water Tribe did.

Another way to create these loops was seen on Yue. This pattern was seen in how Yue wore her hair in a high ponytail and let two large loops fall. Different variants to the hairstyle indeed occur, but they are generally referred to as loopies. This is alternatively similar to how men in the water tribe wear their hair in a bun and call it a warrior’s wolf tail.

Sokka first used the term when he asked Katara how she would feel if she lost something meaningful to her, such as “her hair loopies.”

After the end of the Hundred Year War, hair loopies were still a big trend among the women in the Water Tribes, as Yakone’s wife donned the hairstyle three decades later. We can see this in the Legend of Korra series. Katara retained her hair loopies throughout adulthood and continued to sport the style as an older woman.

History of Loopies

The pirate queen and leader of the Fifth Nation, Tagaka, used to wear her hair in loopies. Even though she was only partially of Water Tribe descent, she preferred this style regardless. Unfortunately, at this point, the Southern Water Tribe had disowned her entire family.

Katara considered hair loopies an important part of her identity. I mean, it had to be as she had worn the hairstyle ever since she was a little girl. However, a few times through the series, it seemed like she had lost her trademark look. One of these instances was during her fight with Pakku. She was fighting for her right to learn waterbending. At this point, her hair fell out of place.

Other times were when she and Aang battled Azula and Zuko in the Crystal Catacombs under the great city of Ba Sing Se. During this fight, her hair once again came out of place during the struggle. While her hair loopies returned for a short time after that fight, Katara changed her look slightly while traveling in the Fire Nation to blend in with the locals.

She removed her hair loopies and wore her hair down. This was a different look from the original that we were used to, and although she still tied two strands of hair behind her ears, though the loops no longer framed her face as the previous one that sported the water tribe custom style.

During the invasion of the Fire Nation, Katara began incorporating her Water Tribe hairstyle once again. She was seen making her hair at the bank, Aang shaving his head to get rid of the full hair he had come to have after a few weeks out of action.

This style she had was a bit reminiscent of her Fire Nation style, with her hair unbraided at the back, but they’re still was the return of her hair loopies, even though they appeared to be slightly thicker than the previous style we knew her to have.

Kanna, Katara, and Sokka’s Gran-Gran, also wore hair loopies. Katara remembered Kya, her mother, with them in a hallucination, but during the final raid on the Southern Water Tribe, Kya did not bear the hairstyle.

After the defeat of Fire Lord Ozai, Sokka attempted to do a painting of the heroes in the Jasmine Dragon. When Katara looked at Sokka’s rendition of her, she accused him of giving her Momo’s ears. He reassured her that they were her hair loopies. Katara had misinterpreted the hair loopies because of their round, hanging shape that resembled the winged lemur’s ears.

Fire Nation Katara Hair

As we’ve earlier stated, another time when Katara consciously wore her hair differently was when she and the rest of the team went to the fire nation.

As soon as they got in, the idea to steal some clothes and blend in as bright as day seemed even more appealing. This was as opposed to living in caves and eating cave hoppers.

On getting to the Fire Nation, Katara and the rest of the team decided to plan to steal local clothes to live incognito among the citizens.

Aang wears a headband to hide his Airbender tattoos. After accidentally putting on a Fire Nation school uniform and being accused of truancy, Aang is taken to that school. Enjoying socializing like a ‘normal’ kid and realizing the value of learning about the Fire Nation, he enrolls in the school. He later arranges a dance party for the rigidly disciplined and self-expression lacking Fire Nation pupils. When the school authorities learn about the party, the students help Aang and his friends to escape.

Fire Nation Katara wears her hair differently from the usual Katara that we know, as seen in the image below.

Katara After The War

In the year following the war’s conclusion, Katara and Team Avatar helped Fire Nation colonials resettle in their homeland. These people were individuals that had been temporarily displaced from their homeland and were forced to live in the Fire Nation. This action was tagged as the Harmony Restoration Movement. However, when the team came to Yu Dao, they were attacked by Fire Army soldiers and confronted by Zuko.

Aang and Zuko began to battle, but Katara managed to calm her boyfriend after entering the Avatar State. The Fire Lord explained that people of Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom descent lived together for generations, unlike in the newer colonies.

Katara and the team traveled to Ba Sing Se to discuss the Yu Dao situation with the Earth King, and while waiting, the two met a group of young women who had devoted themselves to Aang and Air Nomad teachings. This was the beginning of the Air Acolytes.

At first, Katara was somewhat jealous, but soon, she realized that they reminded Aang of his people. Unfortunately, the couple failed to change the current course of events. The Earth King planned on attacking the Fire Nation colonies.

Dejected, they quickly returned to Yu Dao to evacuate its citizens. At this point, they were met by the Yu Dao Resistance before they explained the impending attack. Enraged, Aang concluded that the four nations must remain separate after meeting the Air Nomad devotees in Yu Dao; Katara reminded him that the separation was an illusion.

As the armies arrived, Katara told him that she saw their own future as a couple of different nations reflected in the families of Yu Dao. Then, as the battle raged on, Katara propelled herself up to the Earth King’s war balloon to help convince him that he was fighting a battle against his own nation.

After the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation agreed to make peace, Katara observed Aang welcomed his devotees as the first Air Acolytes.

Later Life of Katara

The couple (Katara and Aang) became very busy trying to restore displaced individuals to their homes. Katara, growing old, she and Aang, after the Harmony Restoration Movement, got married. Katara married Aang, and they gave birth to three children.

Bumi, the firstborn, a non-bender who gained the ability to air bend later in life; Kya, a water bender; and Tenzin, who was born an Airbender like his father, to begin with. Katara continued to develop her skills in waterbending, eventually becoming a leading expert in its various styles and respective skills and techniques and being regarded as the best healer in the world.

She passed on these skills to her only daughter, Kya, who became a renowned water bender in her own right.

In 124 AG, Katara wrote a letter to include in the book that Aang was assembling for Tenzin, in which she wished her son the joys of youth and the strength to accept his legacy as one of the world’s last airbenders. Sometime later in her lifetime, her only daughter Kya revealed her sexual orientation to her.

Old Katara was even more understanding and supportive of her than expected. She soon became the paternal grandmother of Jinora, Ikki, Meelo, and Rohan through Tenzin, who eventually married Pema. However, Tenzin had dated Lin, Toph’s first daughter, for a while. Unfortunately, it never worked out between the two of them.

As she grew older, more and more water benders would use Blood bending for their evil purposes. Before 128 AG, Katara’s efforts led to the outlawing of bloodbending in the United Republic. After the passing of Avatar Aang and his reincarnation into the new Avatar, Korra, she became the Avatar’s waterbending teacher once again.

Teaching the Avatar Water Bending

After Avatar Aang passed away, his new incarnation Korra was fortunately born in the South Pole. She quickly manifested all three bending arts at a very young age. However, only when she trained with Katara did she truly get the hang of water bending and become a master. As at the time when the live animation series aired, Korra could hold her own in waterbending without a problem.

During one of her early training sessions with a young Korra, Katara taught her that waterbending was all about slow and calm movements. As we all know, Korra had immense issues with learning airbending as it was her complete opposite but elementally and in nature too. This was also the case in terms of waterbending. While she could freely bend the element, relying on brute force, true mastery was required to control and calmness, much like air bending.

Katara’s lesson did not stick with Korra. She, however, accidentally buried Katara under a pile of snow, not for the first time. This was when she tried to copy Katara’s moves which were clearly too advanced for her.

Uncovering the elder, Senna apologized for her daughter, though Katara brushed it off. She noted that she had battled more dangerous waterbenders during her life than the youngster. She also expressed a certain amount of confidence that Avatar will learn to control her abilities in time.

The session for that day did, however, get cut short by Tonraq, her father. Apparently, there was a huge snowstorm heading their way.

It took a while before they knew that Korra had gone missing. However, upon learning the next day that Korra had snuck out during that bad weather, Katara joined Tonraq and Senna to search for their daughter.

They discovered the young Avatar safe and sound with a polar bear pup. She expressed her desire to keep it. However, it was Katara that convinced Tonraq and Senna to let her bring the animal home. She noted that every Avatar had had an animal guide and that raising Naga may be exactly what the high-energy Avatar needed.

Afterward, Katara and Korra continued with their waterbending lessons. Korra often spent a lot of time in Katara’s healing hut growing up, where she taught Korra to mend wounds and broken bones. Korra eventually became a skilled healer under Katara’s instruction.

Old Katara Supervising Korra

In 170 AG, Katara supervised Korra’s firebending test alongside other members of the Order of the White Lotus. She noted the Avatar’s ferocity, to which the White Lotus leader responded that she also lacked restraint.

After Korra defeated her opponents, the White Lotus turned to Katara for counsel, wondering whether or not they should let Korra start her airbending training with Tenzin since the young Avatar had yet to grasp the spiritual side of bending.

Confident in her son’s abilities, Katara announced that she believed Korra to be ready to commence her airbending training, as Tenzin would be able to teach her what she needed to know.

When Tenzin and his family arrived at the Southern Water Tribe compound, Katara and Korra greeted Tenzin and his family. At her son’s asking, Katara helped Meelo off his head, much to her grandson’s displeasure.

As she expressed her joy overseeing her family again, Jinora approached her, informing her that she had read everything about her past adventures and asked what happened to Zuko’s mother, Ursa. Katara attempted to elaborate, only to be interrupted by an excited Ikki, who fired several random questions at the old Katara.

Old Katara did great things, and as at the time when we see her in Korra, she is over eighty years old.

Katara Bloodbending: How Katara Mastered the Dark Art

Katara’s bloodbending is one of the scariest and most fearful phases we saw Katara in the entire series. Katara was always housing anger for the death of her mother against the Fire Nation. This is shown in how she treated Zuko when he decided that he wanted to be part of the team.

After going on a journey with the Avatar, Katara came across a water bender that taught her how to blood bend.

What is Blood Bending?

Bloodbending is a specialized sub-skill and a rare variation of waterbending that allows an extremely advanced water bender to take hold of and manipulate fluids within an organism’s body. This allows the bender to move the person’s muscles.

This technique is referred to as the highest level of waterbending that there is and is also known as the darkest, most powerful, and most feared of all bending techniques. Blood bending in itself is the only artist known to endanger the user’s mental state. It puts the user in a state that is beyond reasoning, giving them a sense of power.

The technique was discovered by a water bender named Hama while she was detained in prison designed by the Fire Nation specifically to hold waterbenders. During her detainment, she realized that all life contains water. She proceeded to develop the knowledge and skills of the art by practicing on elephant rats, later employing the technique on her guards to escape.

The forms and styles used by blood benders are similar to how a puppeteer would gesture and move to control their marionette. However, waterbending uses flowing motions with the arms. Thus, there is a more fluid feel to the art of waterbending. Bloodbending, however, seems to require and male use of a more rigid and abrupt form of movement. This further highlights how fundamentally different it is from the primary waterbending forms and its other sub-skill, healing.

Due to its extreme nature, only a handful of waterbenders have demonstrated the ability to blood bend. As a result, the technique is deemed a dark art and is rarely used in combat by most waterbenders.

The complexity and sophistication required to perform the art usually only allows for its use during a full moon when a water bender’s power is at its absolute peak. Only Yakone, Tarrlok, and Amon have shown the ability to perform the art without the aid of the full moon.

Being naturally talented and having trained vigorously, Yakone and Amon were capable of bloodbending without using their arms, also known as psychic bloodbending.

Bloodbending is infrequently applied to daily activities. However, knowledge of the art eventually became known to the public, and the practice of bloodbending was outlawed due to the efforts of Katara following the formation of Republic City.

Hama teaching Katara Bloodbending

After being captured during one of the Fire Nation raids aimed at weakening the Southern Water Tribe, Hama and her fellow waterbenders were sent to a maximum-security prison in the Fire Nation designed specifically to hold benders of her kind.

There, the guards were cautious of providing prisoners with any form of bendable substance that they could utilize in making a reprisal, going so far as to chain the prisoners’ limbs before they were allowed to drink and using “cruel retribution” at any sign of resistance.

Despite the helplessness she faced while imprisoned, Hama was able to feel the enrichment provided to her by the full moon. So she began to devise a plan that would lead to her escape and eventually realized that the elephant rats constantly scurrying around the bottom of her cage were filled with bendable water.

When the next full moon came, she was able to bend the blood in the rats.

She continued to practice until she was ready for the guards. Then, she successfully freed herself from the metal cage that had confined her for so many years.

Unable to go home, she stayed in the fire nation, ultimately developing a measure of hatred for them while she stayed hidden in their midst.

During the summer of 100 AG, Team Avatar decided to camp near a Fire Nation village. This was when they were in the fire nation. Unbeknownst to them, Hama overheard them telling horror stories and deduced from Katara’s story about Nini. She concluded that they were from the Southern Water Tribe and offered the group a place in her inn.

Due to curiosity, they snooped around the old Lady’s room. Upon discovering an old whale tooth comb in Hama’s attic, she revealed herself to be a water bender from the Southern Water Tribe and proposed to teach Katara some original Southern Tribe waterbending techniques so that she could pass on the knowledge of the Southern customs before her death, to which Katara happily agreed.

Katara Bloodbending Ability

An excited Katara was happy to learn from a Southern Water Tribe water bender. Katara spent the next day learning several new techniques from Hama. First, she learned that water could be pulled out of random places.

She picked up techniques such as bending moisture from the air and water from within plants, including fire lilies. This was going to prove invaluable knowledge when no bodies of water were present.

Hama told Katara that she would teach her the ultimate waterbending technique at night when their powers were at their peak during the full moon. Katara was hesitant, claiming that villagers had been disappearing during the full moon. However, Hama seemed unaffected, stated that two master waterbenders under a full moon had nothing to worry about.

That night, Hama took Katara to the forest, where she explained her imprisonment and discovery of bloodbending. Katara was horrified and refused to learn the art when Hama urged her. This angered Hama, who used bloodbending to control Katara.

The young water bender pleaded for mercy, but Hama refused to release her. Then, feeling the moon’s power enforce her waterbending as well, Katara honed her energy and broke free, stating that her own bending was more powerful than Hama’s. The two began to duel, and Katara almost immediately took the upper hand.

Having discovered the truth about Hama from the villagers she imprisoned deep within the mountain, Sokka and Aang arrived soon afterward to aid Katara and told Hama to surrender since she was clearly outnumbered.

Hama refused and used bloodbending to control them. Then, like a puppet master, she used them to attack Katara, though the young water bender managed to avoid being hit. Then, adopting a different approach, Hama maneuvered Aang toward Sokka, who had raised his sword. In an attempt to save Aang, Katara used bloodbending to stop her, effectively breaking Hama’s hold on the boys.

A sobbing Katara, still feeling like she had tapped into something she shouldn’t have.

Hama has led away, the villagers commenting that she was going to rot. Hama snickered, satisfied as she replied that her work was done. She told Katara with a satisfactory grin that she was a blood bender now.

History

Sokka is one of the most important characters of the team Avatar. He played an essential role in making Aang train all the elements in time. He was the one who scheduled everything. Sokka calculated the time down to every last second and arranged the team’s travels as per the plan.

Sokka made the team follow his schedule as well. There are many factors behind Avatar Aang being able to master all the elements. And Sokka’s planning was probably the most important factor behind this feat.

Sokka also planned the assault on the Fire Nation on the Day of The Black Sun. His plan was absolutely perfect and destined for success. However, the attack failed because Azula accidentally discovered the plan while she was in Ba Sing Se imposing as a Kyoshi warrior. The fans even argue that if Azula never found the plan, maybe Avatar Aang would have defeated Firelord Max Ozai during the Day Of The Black Sun invasion.

Sokka’s Doubts

But even though Sokka was an integral and one of the most important members of the Team Avatar, he still was not a bender. This inability to bend any of the elements sometimes left Sokka feeling doubtful of himself and his abilities. One of such instances occurred when the Team Avatar was in the Fire Nation. Sokka was feeling doubtful that his abilities were not enough compared to the other bending members of the team. At this time, he saw a pamphlet that Master Swordsman Piandao is looking for a student.

Sokka was skeptical at first because the team was already behind schedule. And he also did not want to study under the tutelage of someone belonging to the Fire Nation as this might blow their cover and expose the team. But he changed his mind after Katara, Aang and Toph encouraged him. After that, he went to Piandao to join him as his student.

Sokka’s Selection

When Sokka went to Piandao’s home, where he was received by Piandao’s butler “Fat,” He asked Sokka if he brought any offering for the Master? To which Sokka refused. At this, Fat guided him inside the home by saying, “Let’s get it over with,” implying that he was not going to be selected.

Because Piandao had rejected all the candidates until that time, Piandao was doing calligraphy when Sokka introduced himself. The master guessed the usual story that the best swordsman from his town is here.

But after hearing this, Sokka replied that he might have traveled worldwide, but he knows for sure that he has a lot to learn. And also that he is not even sure of his worthiness. But this was what Piandao was looking for, and Sokka is selected.

Sokka begins his training after the Sword Master gives him a formal training outfit and demonstrates the sword. He also tells Sokka that a sword is an extension of oneself and must be thought of as a part of one’s body. He further explains that a sword is just a weapon, but a sword becomes the most versatile weapon in the hands of a Master who utilizes endless possibilities.

Sword of Sokka

Sokka started his training and improved drastically over the span of just a few days. He was initially sparring with the butler named “Fat.” And can beat him after improvising some of the movers he learned and using the surroundings to his advantage.

After defeating Fat, Piandao deemed Sokka worthy of having his own sword and took him to the workshop where some materials were initially present. But Sokka asked that if he can bring the material of his own choice to Piandao. To which the Sword Master replied that he wouldn’t have had any other way”.

Sokka went to the meteorite crash site that the team Avatar witnessed earlier and brought the rubble from the meteorite to build his sword. He even helped build his sword. When the Sword Master bestows the sword on Sokka, stating that he is the most talented student he has ever seen.

Sokka tells him the truth about being from the Water tribe. Piandao attacks Sokka, and they continue fighting for quite some time. Sokka uses his surroundings and the things he has learned to match his more skilled Master. And even earns the approval of his master several times during the fight.

But Piandao eventually gets the upper hand, and Sokka accepts defeat. Piandao then reveals that he had known about him from the beginning because of his name. And even points towards Aang calling him The Avatar. But also states that the art of Sword does not belong to one Nation and gives the Sword to Sokka. And emphasizes that he will have to train himself from now on, and he will someday become an even greater Master than Piandao himself.

Future of Sword

Sokka named the Sword the “Space Sword,” and it had a unique black color similar to the color of the meteorite’s rubble. Sokka used the sword on all his adventures regularly after that. But when he and Toph were cornered by the Fire Nation ship, Sokka threw both his Boomerang and Sword at them to buy more time. Unfortunately, it was at this time that both the Boomerang and Space Sword was lost after falling in the jungle below them.

Some cosplayers are able to recreate these hairstyles perfectly but it takes a lot of time and even more money to replicate these exact styles. Costumes can be copied and weapon props can be bought but the real challenge is to replicate the hairstyles of these animated characters. The fans spend a lot of time and invest a lot of money to get this bit right. Thankfully Sokka has a fairly simple hairstyle that you can get with an even simple haircut. In this article we will look at this iconic Sokka haircut that has now become a very popular hairstyle actually.

Name of Sokka Haircut

Sokka Haircut is widely called the wolf-tail in the Avatar Universe. This hairstyle is mostly used by the male members of the Water Tribe. And this hairstyle is synonymous with the hair loopies that the women of the Water tribe make. Sokka called his wolf-tail as the Warrior’s wolf-tail but Katara teases him by calling the wolf-tail as a ponytail visibly frustrating Sokka.

This haircut is very similar in style to the yop-knot used by the members of the Fire Nation. And when the team Avatar was in the Fire Nation Sokka adjusted in their get-up quite easily. As all he had to do was fix his hair in a top-knot style. The only difference between a wolf-tail and a top knot is that in a wolf-tail, the hair is tied on the backside of the head after the crown of the head. While a top-knot has a knot of hair on the top of the head as the name indicates.

Although Sokka changed his haircut in the form of a top-knot while he was in the Fire Nation with the Team Avatar. But Sokka reverted to his original haircut on the Day Of The Black Sun and kept it afterward for the remaining episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender (TV Series).

Difference Of Sokka Haircut from the Elders

Sokka usually shaved the sides of his head or had little to no hair on the sides so that his warrior wolf-tail stood out. This was done by Sokka regularly as he not only thought of the hairstyle as a symbol of his tribe. But also thought of this haircut as a sign of a warrior. He also named his wolf-tail the warrior wolf-tail in line with this belief of his.

But the elders of the tribe usually grew their side hair more longer even up to their shoulders. So the wolf-tails of the elders of the Water tribe are not as noticeable as compared to Sokka.

Haircut Of Sokka As An Elder

Sokka even kept his unique haircut even when he was quite older. We see him donning the same hairstyle with very few changes in The Legend Of Korra. Sokka is serving as the Chairman of the United Republic Council. This adult version of his warrior wolf-tail resembles a Japanese hairstyle called “Chonmage”.

Sokka Haircut in Daily Routine

Sokka Haircut is fairly simple to maintain as compared to hairstyles of other animated characters. It is also referred to as the man-bun by the modern hairstylists. But it should be specified that man-bun is actually a broad term that covers both top-knot and Sokka haircut depending on the preference of the customer. But the hair-dressers usually categorize both these haircuts in the man-bun category.

Best Sokka Quotes From One Of The Funniest Characters

As we’ve come to note, Sokka is the comic relief among the characters in the Last Airbender series. His sense of humor is one of the few things that kept us going when the journey got dark and gloomy. His sense of humor isn’t always appreciated by his friends, but it’s appreciated by the audience. Also, the fact that he is also the non-bender who has his way around maps and schedules is also another reason why Sokka has a lot of quotes we need to examine. Let us take a look at some of the best Sokka quotes

The Best Sokka Quotes

“You just love taking me out of my comfort zone, don’t you? “

This is one of the very first of the sassy remarks that Sokka made. This was made to Katara in the icy southern seas when they went fishing together.

It’s very obvious that the two siblings love each other but the writers of this show do very well to properly depict their sibling fights and bickering. Katara is the one who wants to go on this adventure with the Avatar. Sokka, not so much initially.

Katara, despite all the portrayal as being practical, is definitely the one who pushes Sokka outside of what he’s comfortable with. And in his defense, he’s not exactly comfortable with a lot of things. Sure, he says this to tease her at the start of the series, but it’s pretty much a premonition as he himself would come to figure out.

“Good inside him isn’t good enough. Why don’t you come back when it’s outside of him too?”

Sokka says this to Uncle Iroh as he pleads with team Avatar to be more accommodating of his nephew and says that he knows there’s good inside of him. Sokka retorts with this remark as Zuko at this point had done nothing but chase them all over the globe. Sokka, unconvinced that Zuko has any good in him despite Uncle Iroh’s plea.
Zuko would eventually redeem himself and join the team.

“This is the kind of wacky, time-wasting nonsense I’ve been missing.”

This statement was made after Zuko had joined them. He saw a poster that said a play about the boy in the iceberg was going to be made. This was going to be by the Ember Island Players. Zuko, frustrated, said that his mother used to take them to see the plays all the time and remarked that they were bad. Sokka, dismissing not going stated that this was the type of time-wasting nonsense he had been missing.

“My first girlfriend turned into the moon.”

This is a statement he made when he and Zuko were in a hot air balloon, in the boiling rock episode. He explained to Zuko that his first girlfriend turned into the moon. Zuko in turn pats him and tells him that this is rough. Come to think of it, this is not news to Zuko. He was there, trying to redeem his honor and whatnot.

“Look, I hate to be the wet blanket here, but since Katara’s busy, I guess it’s up to me.”

This is a slide sarcastic remark he made that stated indirectly that Katara is the wet blanket in their group of three. Sokka knows where he stands in his group of friends and he knows that he’s not really the one in charge. More often than not, it’s Katara calling the shots as the more responsible adult.

More of The Best Sokka Quotes

“I knew it was only a matter of time. Appa ate Momo.”
What’s funny about this quote is the exaggeration in it. This line is an example that Sokka jumps to the most ridiculous of conclusions through the weirdest of ways. Plenty of members of their party have gone missing in the past and it’s never been suggested that Appa would eat one of them. The expression he had at that point also made it a memorable quote.

“You know, it was really unclear.”

This is a reference to the part in which Jet supposedly died in the play that was performed by Ember Island Players. The scene where Long Fei bent a boulder at him and said he had chosen his own demise. The scene was recreated and in an attempt to figure out what happened, Toph asks if Jet just died. He replied, saying it was really unclear.

“It’s the quenchiest.”

This is one of the funniest versions of Sokka. It feels like Sokka on an extra funny drug. This was after Appa had been kidnapped by the sand benders. The team had to walk out of the desert on foot. Sokka, getting a hold of some cactus juice gets a sip that makes him lose his senses and act funny. He makes this statement, encouraging everyone else to have a sip of cactus juice.

“I’m just a guy with a boomerang. I didn’t ask for all this flying and magic.”

Soon after Sokka and Katara fly on Appa to go save Aang from the fire nation, they are able to crash the ship. Katara, trying to attack some soldiers mistakenly freezes Sokka. He starts using his boomerang to try and break the frozen ice. He makes the statement of not asking for any of the flying and magic. He says he is just a boomerang guy.

“I’m sorry master, you’re wrong. I am not worthy. I am not who you think I am … I lied so that I could learn Swordsmanship from you…”

In this episode, Sokka spends the entire episode, learning the ways of the sword. Sokka, disguising as a Fire Nation colony member tries to learn but It’s a bold lie. Sokka is however too honorable to keep it up. Of course, it turns out Sokka’s teacher knows all along who he is. Sokka’s confession helps to prove that Sokka is worthy of the position he’s in. Not only does he get a pretty sweet sword made from “space rock,” but he also starts to understand his value to the group. They need him as much as he needs them.

Who is the Painted Lady?

The Painted Lady is a benevolent spirit of the Jang Hui River. She is recognized and fabled for her protective abilities and healing abilities as well. She once acted as the guardian of the Jang Hui village but was driven away after a couple of hundred years. This was when the Fire Nation invaded and occupied the village.

The soot from their factory contaminated the village, and the Painted Lady ceased to guard the village. Some fans have seriously debated this, pointing that the villagers needed her the most at the time.

The Painted Lady chooses who she reveals herself to and saves from that; only the spiritually enlightened and inclined can see her form. The Painted Lady

History of the Painted Lady

The Painted Lady in Avatar lore was originally a human being. She lived before the 3rd century BG. She was a person that had a strong spiritual affinity. She had a close relationship with nature and maintained a strong connection to the spirits. As a result of this affinity for spiritual things, she transcended into the Spirit World after her death.

After becoming a spirit, the Painted Lady began to watch over the river town of Jang Hui until the Fire Nation Army built a factory on the corresponding river in 90 AG. At this point, the fire nation factory began polluting the river by discharging its waste into it. The pollution drove the Painted Lady away, leaving the villagers to fend for themselves.

Several years later, as the villagers tell Aang and his friends, the fish and oceanic wildlife ceased to exist soon after the factory came into functionality. So when the Avatar and his friends arrived at the village, the village was already a wretched place to live as their livelihood hung in the balance.

The town of Jang Hui is a fishing village, and this factory hindered that to the maximum. The village had soon become deprived of survival and devastated by illnesses caused by the pollutants in its waters. This pollution came from the factory, and it became clear that their only problem was the factory.

Through intense persuasion from Katara, who impersonated the Painted Lady for several days, Team Avatar assisted the villagers in cleaning up the river. Finally, one night by the side of the river, Katara found herself in the presence of the real Painted Lady, who thanked her for her part in cleaning the Jang Hui River.

Team Avatar Arriving at Jang Hui Village

When the team came to the fishing village, they were surprised at what they found. The village was suffering greatly, and Katara, unable to look away from their suffering, decided to dress up as the Painted Lady to help them.

If they wanted to get help from anyone, she felt they would rather it be their precious deity, the Painted Lady, than some colonial girl. At this point, Sokka had already created a strategic schedule and routine for them to follow if they were to meet up with the mini invasion they were planning.

When they got back into town the next day, it was significantly livelier. The villagers, Xu being their representative, informed them that they had a prestigious visit from the Painted Lady the night before. Sokka, immediately concluding that the villagers were in good hands, asked for a fish and instantly said they were on their way.

He eventually suggests that if the Painted Lady wanted to help the village, she would blow up the factory. But, after Aang found her out, she persuaded him to help rid the town of the factory forever.

They eventually all get caught up and know that Katara was the Painted Lady. The fire nation, refusing to sit by as their factory was destroyed, decides to attack the village. With the help of team Avatar, they drive back the fire bending attack and join hands with the villagers to clean the river.

The Painted Lady manifests herself to Katara as she goes for a drink in the river later that night, offering a single sentence.

“Thank you.”

Discovery Of The Avatar

While on a fishing trip with her brother, they went into a strong current of water that caused their canoe to crash. They were left stranded on a huge chunk of ice. They discovered a person trapped inside the chunk of ice. And Katara started to dig him out. Unknowingly, they discovered the lost Avatar Aang.

Aang was not only the Avatar but also the last surviving person of the Air Nomads. Firelord Sozin killed all the Air Nomads to kill the Avatar because he knew that after Avatar Roku, the next Avatar would be born an Air Nomad.

Luckily Aang survived Sozin’s attack and went into a slumber for 99 years. Waking a year before the arrival of the Sozin’s comet. The arrival of this comet marked the 100 Years of War. Aang immediately liked Katara and asked her if she wanted to go penguin sledding with him. Zuko attacked Katara’s village in search of the Avatar, to which Aang surrendered on the condition that the village is left unharmed.

Katara then went to save Aang with the help of Appa. After Aang was successfully rescued, she asked him to teach him water bending. To which he replied that they could go to the North Pole and learn Water bending together.

North Pole

When the team arrived at the North Pole, Katara was shocked to learn that the tribe does not teach the women the art of Water Bending and only allows them to become healers. After an interesting turn of events, Master Pakku agreed to teach both Katara and Aang.

But during their training, the Northern Water Tribe was attacked by The Fire Nation Navy under the command of Admiral Zhao. Nevertheless, the Team avatar successfully defeated the attacking force, and Katara became Aang’s teacher after Master Pakku told her that she is now a master.

Ba Sing Se

When the Team Avatar reached the city of Ba Sing Se, the team was not allowed to meet the Earth King by the secret police called the Dai Li. Dai Li was headed by a man named Long Feng.

Not only was Long Feng was a powerful Earth bender, but they also used hypnosis to subdue the people that raised their voices against the government’s policies in the city. Nevertheless, the team successfully exposed the Dai Li, and Katara stayed in the city to plan for the attack on the Day of the Black Sun.

Azula captured her, and when the rest of the team arrived at the city to rescue her, they were met with strong opposition not only from Azula but also from the members of the Dai Li. Aang went into the Avatar state to defeat the attackers but was shot down by Azula’s Lightning attack. Katara rescued Aang’s body and used the holy water from the hidden oasis of the Northern Water Tribe to revive Aang.

Fire Nation

In the year of the arrival of the Sozin’s Comet, the team tried to take down Firelord Max Ozai on the day of the Black Sun, when a solar eclipse will cause all the fire benders to lose their power. For this, they went to the Fire Nation well before the day of the attack.

They changed into traditional Fire Nation attires and went on to have several adventures before the day of the Black Sun. After the invading forces were captured and the attack of the team avatar failed. All the members allowed Aang and the rest of his team to escape.

After Aang mastered all the elements, he fought Firelord Max Ozai on the day of the arrival of the Sozin’s comet. After defeating Ozai, Aang did not want to kill him, so he took his bending away.

The Blue Spirit: The Last Airbender

The Blue Spirit is the 13th episode of Book One: Water of the Avatar, The Last Airbender series. The episode debuted on the 17th of June, 2005.

Much as we came to fully find out, Aang is loyal to a fault. One of the oddest conversations one can choose to have with an enemy is asking if they could be friends in another life.

“HE WAS ONE OF THE BEST FRIENDS I EVER HAD, AND HE WAS FROM THE FIRE NATION, JUST LIKE YOU. IF WE KNEW EACH OTHER BACK THEN, DO YOU THINK WE COULD HAVE BEEN FRIENDS, TOO?” Aang said to Zuko.

The Blue Spirit is an episode in Book One. It is also the identity of a masked rebel that always stood against Zhao. But who is the Blue Spirit?

Who is The Blue Spirit?

The Blue Spirit is an alter ego that is used by Princess Zuko of the Fire Nation. The Fandom is not entirely sure why Prince Zuko assumed the alter ego, The Blue Spirit. Much speculation is that he did it simply to be able to handle certain things he could not handle without his face being seen.

The Blue Spirit fights with twin swords, never fire bending even though there is a fire bender behind the mask. The idea is to keep his identity a secret.

The Blue Spirit Episode

The Blue Spirit as earlier mentioned is an episode that is specially dedicated to the Blue Spirit. It is an episode that mostly introduced the character to the screen and gave room for development all through the series moving forward.

In the beginning of the episode, Zhao is promoted to admiral and he then enlists the help of a group of professional archers called the Yuyan Archers. Meanwhile, our heroes come down with a nasty case of the flu. Sokka and Katara had become sick due to being exposed to a storm previously. This leaves just Aang and puts him in a shot. He has to go to a herbalist to find a cure. After he gets the cure, he is caught by the Yuyan Archers and imprisoned by Zhao. The cure is to suck in some frogs.

A strange warrior with a blue mask comes to rescue him from Zhao’s clutches and they escape together. Aang later finds out as the warrior is knocked that he is none other than Zuko. He wonders if the two of them could be friends. This leads to the monologue in the opening paragraph of the article. Zuko, choosing to remain enemies, attacks, but Aang, being prepared for it, escapes and cures his friends.

Blue Spirit Scenes

The episode opens with a messenger hawk approaching a Fire Nation fortress. This fortress is called Pohuai Stronghold.

It opens to the courtyard, showing several highly skilled archers practice their skill in the wide stronghold. Commander Zhao and Colonel Shinu are observing them and vehemently arguing. Colonel Shinu has denied Zhao’s request to use the group of advanced bowmen, whom he identifies as the Yuyan Archers, in the commander’s quest to capture the Avatar.

He deems Zhao’s obsession to be a “vanity project” of his rather than a part of the Hundred Year War. As they debate the use of the archers, a hawk arrives with news from Fire Lord Ozai that Zhao has been promoted to admiral.

With his new authority, he tells a grudging Colonel Shinu that his request is now an order. Shinu bows in submission and leaves. Little to  Zhao’s knowledge that a figure clad in dark clothes and a blue mask is perched on the roof above him and has heard the entire conversation. The figure silently retreats into the shadows and faces from the scene unnoticed.

Sokka & Katara’s Post Storm Flu

Meanwhile, the Team has stopped to rest in the ruins of Taku. Katara is caring for an ill and delirious Sokka who is talking nonsense.

Sokka is fully convinced that Appa can talk and that he can now suddenly earthbound. He attempts to display his skills. Katara tells Aang that the illness is a result of his exposure to the storm that he was recently caught in.

Aang comes back from an unsuccessful hunt for ginger root. He sees that Katara has also gotten affected even if she tries to remain brave for a while. Aang returns with a map to a herbalist institute on a nearby mountain. Katara states that Sokka is not in any condition to go there.

She says that all he needs is some rest, just as she begins to cough herself. Katara strongly protests that she is fine. Aang realizes she has the same illness as Sokka and decides to travel to the herbalist alone. He originally wants to take a glider but as lightning flashes across the sky, he thinks better of it and decides to go on foot instead. He then begins running quickly with the aid of his air bending.

Enter The Blue Spirit

Meanwhile, on Zuko’s ship, Lt. Jee is going over a map with Prince Zuko to make plans to continue the search for the Avatar. The ship is suddenly overshadowed by a large Fire Nation Naval ship. This causes Zuko to wonder what they want.

Uncle Iroh, in the middle of a Pai Sho game as usual, speculates rather inaccurately that they may want to play Pai Sho. What they actually came to do was to inform Prince Zuko and his crew that all information regarding the Avatar is to be reported to Admiral Zhao. This makes Zuko boil internally with rage but manages to control himself. They reveal to all present crew members that Zhao has been promoted and is now in charge of the search for the Avatar.

Zuko informs the Fire Nation soldier that he has no information to provide and orders them to get off his ship and let them pass. Zuko and his crew are then informed that Zhao is not permitting the passage of ships in or out of the area.

Even still, Zuko again demands that the soldiers get off his ship. Iroh, seemingly indifferent to the conversation, declares enthusiastically that he has won the pot in his Pai Sho game. He however encourages them in an effort to get them to play again. He says that they almost got him this time.

In the forest, Fire Nation lookouts are hiding out in concealed outposts. One of the guards picks up a wanted poster for the Avatar and comments that it is “pretty amazing.” He says that the Avatar can create tornadoes and run faster than the wind.

The other soldier, who was peering through a telescope, quickly dismisses the claims, calling it Fire Lord propaganda. When Aang soon speeds by, unknowingly wreaking havoc on the outpost, the soldier blows a signal horn to alert others of Aang’s presence.

Meanwhile, Sokka, still sick, begs his sister to get him some water. Katara, weakened by the sudden takeover of the sickness herself, tells Momo to take her water skin to the river and fill it with water. However, Momo does not understand what Katara is saying but he departs with the water skin nonetheless.

Aang Gets Captured

On his quest to find a cure, the herbalist tells him to go to the swamp at the bottom of the mountain. He begins to gather the frogs as he’s been told when the archers ambush and capture him.

Aang is brought back to Pohuai Stronghold, where he is kept secured in a large room, his arms and legs are shackled to two posts to keep him from bending, and the room is guarded by four men.

Zhao enters the room and quickly begins to gloat. He soon points out that Aang’s century-long game of hide and seek with the Fire Nation is over. Angered, Aang challenges him to a duel, but he declines. He then moves on to a trick of his own and asks Aang instead how it feels to be the only Airbender left and whether or not he misses his people.

He does this, taunting him over the murder of his entire people. He tells Aang that he would not be killed like his people were, since that would only result in his reincarnation as the next Avatar. This would require the Fire Nation to hunt him down again.

Instead, he would be kept alive. He sinisterly hints saying “but just barely.”

As Zhao turns his back and walks away, Aang air bends with his mouth, sending the momentarily inattentive firebender flying off his feet. Zhao gets slammed into the wall and falls briefly to the floor. Getting to his feet, Zhao declares that Aang can blow all the wind that he wants, as his situation is futile since there is no escaping Pohuai Stronghold and no one is coming to rescue him.

Meanwhile, a feverish Sokka asks an equally ill Katara for water again. At this time, all she does is assure him that Momo should return soon. When the winged lemur returned, he however did not fill the water skin. Momo returns and brings them a dead mouse, which he drops on Katara’s chest, much to her disgust. Katara once again pleads with him again for water and Momo departs. Katara then begins to wonder what is keeping Aang.

Blue Spirit saves Aang

Outside the Fire Nation fortress, the figure with the blue mask remains hidden patiently behind the shrubs. He sees his chance when a supply cart passes him by. He swiftly rolls underneath the cart and grabs hold, letting the cart do the rest and get him into the stronghold.

As the cart is halted at a checkpoint, a Fire Nation guard inspects the interior of the vehicle. When he moves to look underneath the cart, the masked figure moves to the other side of the wagon and hides inside, thus gaining access to the heavily guarded fortress. After the cart stops to unload, the figure stealthily sneaks out and makes his way up a nearby staircase.

Inside his cell, Aang hears some commotion and eyes the door with apprehension as the lock is being turned. He gasps as a masked figure enters and unsheathes his dual broadswords. Swinging the weapons, the man advances on Aang, who screams.

To Aang’s surprise, however, the figure slices through his bonds, freeing him. As the figure retreats without saying a word, Aang asks him who he is, what is going on, and wonders if the man is there to rescue him. The figure does not respond, though opens the door and signals for the Avatar to follow him.

Believing he means him no harm, Aang follows him. He passes by the tied-up guard and notices his partially frozen frogs are making their escape through another hallway. Trying to gather them, Aang is pulled away by the masked stranger, though protests loudly that his friends need to suck on the animals.

They eventually are able to leave the fortress in which the Blue Spirit gets knocked out in the process. Aang moves to unmask the face of his helper and gets taken aback to find out its none other than the Fire Nation Prince who wants him in chains. He considers leaving him behind but eventually decides to rescue him. Zuko soon wakes up to Aang’s monologue; he tries to attack the Airbender but Aang, being prepared for this, escapes into the trees.

Aang And Katara Kiss Guide In Avatar: The Last Airbender

The moment where Aang and Katara kiss for the first time was one of the most awaited moments in Avatar: The Last Airbender (TV Series). Since the beginning of the TV series when Aang was discovered by Katara and Sokka, Aang felt attracted to Katara. When Aang woke up after a hundred years, the first person he saw was Katara. And he immediately wanted to do penguin sledding with her immediately.

Even when Aang offered Katar and Sokka a lift to their home on Appa. Aang was looking and smiling at Katara. To which Katara asked that why was Aang smiling at her. Aang was embarrassed at the question and replied with a question ” Was I smiling?”.

When Zuko came and attacked Katara and her tribe Aang presented himself for capture to protect her and her tribe. It was obvious that Aang liked Katara from the moment he first laid eyes on her. But Aang never had the courage to tell Katara about his feeling of love towards her. In an episode where the team goes to a fortune-teller, Aang is very excited to meet her in hopes of getting some insight into his relationship with Katara.

Aang And Katara Kiss Moments

In this section, we will list the moments where Aang and Katara kiss in Avatar: The Last Airbender (TV Series). There were quite a few moments in the TV Series where both of the lead characters become intimate with each other. All of these moments came with their particular feelings that we will cover in this article as well.

History Of Aang and Katara

Before covering the moments where Aang and Katara kiss let’s dive into the development of their relationship over the course of the TV Series. Aang and Kataradeveloped a special bond right at the moment when they first met. With Katara instantly trusting Aang where Sokka still remained skeptical and thought of him as an agent of the Fire Nation.

When the group is traveling towards the Eastern Air Temple for the first time after Aang wakes up. He initially did not believe Sokka and Katara about the genocide of the Air Nomads. And told the group that the Nomads can not die as the Sky Bison is the only way to reach the Air Temples. And nobody except the Nomads has a Flying Bison. But when he sees the temple completely deserted and in a ruined state. He then feels extreme pain and grief.

The reason behind this huge burden of grief was that Aang blamed himself for the killings of the Air Nomads. Because it was his responsibility to protect the people of the four nations and maintain the balance between them. He became so distraught at the loss of his family that he unwillingly entered the Avatar State. But he was comforted by Katara who told him that she and Sokka are now his family. And comforted him back to his original state.

At the season finale of the first book, Aang entered into the spirit world, and Katara stood guard to protect his body. But his body was kidnapped by Zoku despite Katara’s efforts to protect the body. When Aang finally returns after defeating Commander Zhao and his forces, Katara and Aang share a long and intimate hug.

1. Cave Of The Two Lovers

While traveling across the Earth Kingdom, Aang and Katara get trapped inside the Cave Of Two Lovers. The only way to get out of this was to trust love. They came across the tombs of Oma and Shu, the two lovers who would secretly meet in the cave. In their tomb, there were statues of them kissing with the inscription “Love Is Brightest In The Dark.” On this Katara suggested that they both kiss like Oma and Shu as it seems the only way to get out of the cave.

They kissed right when their torch is about to go off. Although, the viewers are not shown the kiss of Aang and Katara because it is implied that they kissed after the torch went off. After the kiss the cave was illuminated with shining crystals. The blushed after kissing for the first time ever and got out of the cave on the way illuminated by the crystals.

Before Aang Left To Meet Guru Pathik

After liberating Ba Sing Se from the control of Long Feng, the group separated for a short while with Toph leaving to meet her parents, and Katara staying in Ba Sing Se to plan for the attack on Fire Nation capital during the upcoming eclipse.

Aang received a letter from Guru Pathik of Eastern Air Temple stating that he can help the Aang take control of his Avatar state. Aang receives a kiss on the cheek from Katara as a sign of goodbye leaving The Avatar blushing.

Kiss During Aang’s Daydream

Before the day of the eclipse, Aang felt extreme anxiety and could not sleep for two nights. He was so sleep-deprived that he started daydreaming. Aang expresses his love to Katara in his daydream and the two end up sharing a kiss. But was woken up by Katara herself, who ended up comforting Aang which allowed The Avatar to go to sleep before his day of the fight.

The Day Of The Invasion

On the day of the eclipse, Aang kissed Katara before the invasion. As he feared that he might not return after the invasion. Katara returned the kiss back and Aang and Katara went on to perform their respective roles in the invasion. But the invasion was failed and the two did not talk about their feelings afterward.

Ember Island

When the Team Avatar was at Ember Island, they went on to see a play based on them. In the play, Aang was portrayed as Katara’s little brother. This made Aang uncomfortable and he left the theatre. Katara found him but Aang started to discuss the feelings but Katara said that she is confused right now. To which Aang kissed her again causing her to yell at him and leave. Both of them became very tense afterward but Katar supported Aang in his fight against the Firelord Ozai nonetheless.

It was later shown in the ending scenes that the two of them got married after the war and went on to have three children and lived happily ever after until Aang passed away at the age of 56.

(Avatar) Yue: Things You Didn’t Know About Her

Aang and his friends met a lot of allies during their travels over three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Not all of them were able to be a part of the series for the long haul, but many of them made a big impression on viewers in their brief appearances. One of those was avatar Yue of the Northern Water Tribe.

Avatar Yue became a fan favorite due to her kindness, her commitment to her people, and her feelings for Sokka. Though her time on the show was short, her presence was felt long after she was gone thanks to her giving up her life to become the moon spirit.  With such a short time on the series, however, there are a few things fans might not know about her.

(Avatar) Yue Cannot Waterbend In Life

Yue is the daughter of the tribe’s leader, and she has incredibly high social standing in her community, but she is not a waterbender. That’s not because Master Pakku wouldn’t teach her, but because Avatar Yue didn’t have the innate ability in life. She did, however, have the ability in death.

Once Avatar Yue became the spirit of the moon, she could push and pull the tides, allowing her the moon’s version of waterbending. She helped Aang to create large waves in some of his final battles in the series.

Her Hair Was Not Originally White

Thanks to Yue’s story of her infancy, the audience knew that her hair turned white when she was a baby when the spirit of the moon gave her life. They might not realize just how unnatural that is.

Throughout the series, Yue is the only young character who has white hair. It’s in huge contrast to Japanese anime that uses a rainbow of colors for hair. Avatar sticks with more “natural” colors, with gray and white hair indicating advanced age for the characters.

(Avatar) Yue’s Name Means Moon

Before Yue’s fate in the series is revealed, some fans might have already thought she was special if they’re familiar with Mandarin. That’s because her name is the Mandarin word for moon.

It’s not so much as a subtle clue, as long as fans know what they’re looking for.

Her Eyes Were A Visual Clue By The Animators

When General Zhao ended Tui’s life, the entire event wasn’t shown on screen, but its aftermath was. The world around everyone went gray as the light of the moon was snuffed out. Even the characters were dulled in color reflecting that they were shrouded in shadow.

Yue’s eyes, however, didn’t turn grey in the shadow like everyone else’s around her. Instead, they shined a bright blue, indicating that the moon spirit was still alive in her before the characters came to the same conclusion.

They Named A Bay After Avatar Yue

Considering Avatar Yue was so briefly a part of the original Avatar series, fans might not have expected her influence to continue to be felt in Legend Of Korra. If they pay attention to locations in the series though, they’ll discover she’s been honored.

Like many of the historical figures in the franchise, Yue has a location named for her. Specifically, it’s a bay near Republic City.

Avatar Yue’s Appearance As The Moon Spirit Is Inspired By The Chinese

Just as Avatar Yue’s name was taken from the Mandarin word for moon, her look once she became the spirit of the moon also took inspiration from China. Though it’s never been officially confirmed, her appearance looked to be modeled after Chang’e, the Chinese goddess of the moon.

Like Yue, Chang’e also had long, flowing robes, with additional ribbons and layered skirts, though she wore her hair tied back tightly. Yue’s hairstyle from her human form remained in her spirit form.

Yue Was The First On-Screen Human Death In The Series

Most of the time in the Avatar the Last Airbender series, death was implied – or left up to the audience to wonder what happened to a character. Even the death of the moon spirit wasn’t shown on screen. Instead, the effects of it were demonstrated with character reactions and a changing color palette.

Avatar Yue deciding to sacrifice herself, on the other hand, marked the first time the audience actually watched a character die. She even kisses Sokka goodbye in spirit form. That might be one of the reasons fans consistently find the sequence one of the saddest moments in the show.

Yue In Avatar The Last Airbender Season 1

Because the Avatar series was so rich with history, and expanded its family trees in the sequel series Legend Of Korra, fans have a keen interest in family lineage. Unfortunately, Yue remains mostly a mystery.

While her father, Arnook, played a major role during Aang’s time with the Northern Water Tribe, and her mother was shown in flashback to her infancy, Yue’s mother never even received a name in the series.

The Ember Island Players Got Avatar Yue Right

Avatar the Last Airbender was one of the rarest series to feature a clip show that audiences actually enjoyed. In their case, the main cast of characters attended a play performed by the Ember Island Players about Aang’s quest.

While most of the characters hated their portrayal (Katara in particular), Toph was the only one who enjoyed the liberties they took with her. Most of what the Players featured was also not exactly correct. Interestingly, Yue’s part of the story was, which was likely a testament to her people’s gratitude for her sacrifice. The Ember Island Players supposedly interviewed people Aang and his friends came into contact with to write their script

Avatar Yue’s Her Mother Was Never Named

Because the Avatar series was so rich with history; and expanded its family trees in the sequel series Legend Of Korra, fans have a keen interest in family lineage. Unfortunately, the family history of Avatar Yue remains mostly a mystery.

While her father, Arnook, played a major role during Aang’s time with the Northern Water Tribe; and her mother was shown in flashback to her infancy, Yue’s mother never even received a name in the series.

Princess Yue is a water tribe princess, born to the Northern water tribe’s chief. She is the daughter of Chief Arnook and she also serves him as one of his advisors. After the death of the moon spirit Tui, she felt obligated with a huge responsibility to give back the life that the moon spirit had given her. The moon spirit was killed by Zhao, a fire nation soldier, and Admiral. Yue sacrificed and replaced the moon spirit, sharing the position. This was during the Siege of the Northern water tribe.

Yue’s Early Life

The princess was born to the water tribe chief as a sick child. She had an illness that no one knew about which caused her to almost be born still and asleep. As a child, she was quiet, remained asleep and didn’t cry. This caused her parents to worry and they feared that she would die. Her condition, growing critical, the tribe’s healers had tried their best.

Yagoda, one of the best healers in the whole nation also put in unlimited effort but to no avail. They all concluded that princess Yue was going to die. Chief Arnook, in a desperate bout to save his daughter’s life, begged the moon spirit to save her. That night, under the full moon, he brought her to the spirit oasis. The Oasis is regarded as the center of all spiritual energy in the nation.

This was also the same oasis that Avatar Wan came across after he was banished from his hometown in the Fire Lion Turtle City. Chief Arnook placed her in the pond and her hair turned white. The moon spirit gifted her with part of its life force. Thus, she survived and her parents named her Yue, meaning for the moon.

Yue was arranged to marry a young water tribe warrior named Hahn. Prior to Team Avatar’s arrival at the North Pole where the siege that would take place,

Hahn had carved a betrothal necklace for her. This is a tradition done in the water tribe by new couples to mark their engagement. Yue did not really love him and consented to the marriage as a duty to her people. She also did this to stay in line with her people’s customs. Sokka resented this decision, telling her that she was not marrying her people as he was in love with her soon after they met.

Yue & Team Avatar

Soon as the team arrived at the North Pole, Sokka was already smitten by the beauty of Yue Avatar and her whole appearance. He got in a conversation with her at the party that her father threw in recognition of the Avatar’s arrival and her sixteenth birthday. Her father, Master Paku, who Chief Arnook arranged to be Aang’s and later Katara’s water bending teacher was also seated alongside her.

Sokka awkwardly flirts with her and the two of them arrange to meet and do “an activity” as Sokka told her. These activities included riding on Appa and taking romantic walks together around the city.

Even if there was a lot of affection between the two of them, she was still hesistant. This is because she was bound in an arranged marriage to Hahn. Sokka gets in a fight with Hahn and later and tells him that Princess Yue was wasted on a selfish and self-absorbed jerk like him.

Hahn had more love for her social status than who she was. He boasted to Sokka that he had courted several girls but “she came with the most perks”. This was one of the reasons that Sokka flared up and tried to beat Hahn up.

Yue and Sokka come to realize their love for each other. Even if Sokka knew how he felt about her almost the moment that he saw her. Even still, she could not bear to continue meeting with him because they confused her so much. She also strongly felt that this would interfere with her responsibilities to her tribe.

He becomes angry when she insisted that being together was “wrong” and that it was her duty to marry Hahn for her people. He heatedly tells her that she was not marrying her people.

During Admiral Zhao’s siege of the North, chief Arnook takes Sokka off the super important mission. Sokka becomes angry, but Arnook later tells him the real reason for this decision. He later tells him that he wants him for something even more important which is protecting his daughter. He did this because he had noticed how much love was between them.

Yue Avatar and Katara led Aang to the Spirits Oasis to help him to enter the Spirit World. Aang, while in the spirit world had been captured by Zuko, she accompanied Katara and Sokka as they tracked the two of them down on Appa.

On returning to the Oasis, they see that Zhao has captured the moon spirit in its mortal form. He fatally strikes the spirit, causing it to be Injured and at the point of death. This leaves all the water benders practically powerless.

Appearing on the scene, Iroh saw that she had been touched by the Moon Spirit, which reminded her how her life was saved by Tui as a newborn. Once again acting dutifully to her tribe, Yue sacrificed herself to give back the life that the Moon had given her.

Against Sokka’s wishes, she places her hands on the fish and collapses into Sokka’s arms. She closes her eyes and dies in his arms almost immediately. She subsequently appears as a spirit to Sokka, shares a tender kiss with him and a promise to always be with him.

At that moment, the once darkened moon reappears in the sky and Princess Yue became the moon.

Yue’s spirit appeared before Sokka and her father shortly after.

Yue Avatar: After death

She appears several times after her death in the series. Several times following her death, Yue Avatar’s influence on Sokka became evident and even more obvious.

While Team Avatar was trapped in the Foggy Swamp under its spiritual influence, Sokka hallucinated about her. Her hallucination regrettably told him that he failed to protect her. This was a reflection of the guilt he carried about her death. During his time in the Si Wong Desert, Sokka directly referred to the moon as Yue while in an intoxicated state brought about by drinking cactus juice.

When Sokka and Suki nearly kissed while crossing the Serpent’s Pass, a warning glimpse of the moon could be visible in the background. This reminded him of Yue’s presence and his memory of Yue’s death prompted him to refuse the kiss while acting overly protective of Suki.

After Aang was struck down by Princess Azula’s lightning during the Coup of Ba Sing Se, Yue Avatar was able to provide more tangible assistance to Team Avatar: She took it upon herself to meet the Avatar in the Spirit World. She was instrumental before and after her death and is a viable member of the Team Avatar7

The Infamous Sokka Cactus Juice Episode

The Sokka Cactus Juice is one of the episodes that has been met with mixed feelings.

This episode was funny and equally sad one as it is one of the episodes where we truly got a glimpse at the sadness the team was yet to face. It was a tiny bit but it was the beginning of what was to come. Aside from the background story, everything else was proceeding smoothly.

Our heroes were their best selves until that happened. We got a glimpse of what Aang looked like, completely devoid of hope. They say pain builds character and the loss of Appa in the Si Wong desert was the beginning of that for Aang.

The episode where Sokka took Cactus Juice is one that would make anyone laugh as his antiquities in the episode were amplified by a hundred fold.

Sokka, hallucinating on cactus juice said,

“DRINK CACTUS JUICE. IT’LL QUENCH YA! NOTHING’S QUENCHIER. IT’S THE QUENCHIEST!”

I know, right? That makes no sense at all.

Cactus juice is a naturally occurring liquid that is found in certain succulent plants of the Si Wong Desert. This juice is found in cactus plants and in a desolate wasteland devoid of water, it truly does start to look tempting.

However, It contains hallucinogens which cause those who consume it to temporarily fall into a deranged mental state. We can see this in a certain young water tribe warrior who lost his marbles for nearly the whole day.

While wandering around Si Wong Desert, Team Avatar stumbled upon a cactus. Parched and dying of thirst, Sokka quickly slices open the plant, and downs the contents. He and Momo quenches their thirst with the juice inside but at a price. Unbeknownst to them that the liquid contained a powerful hallucinogen; Momo began to soar in the sky aimlessly, while Sokka advertised the dangerous liquid and asked nonsensical questions.

Seeing the effect the juice had on her brother, Katara poured the liquid on the ground before Toph could have a sip as well. The hallucinogenic effects of the juice eventually wore off by the next morning.

Appa’s Capture During The Sokka Cactus Juice Episode

We all know Sokka would eat or drink almost anything but why are they traveling on foot you might ask? Why are they stranded in the Si Wong desert to begin with?

The team met a very strange professor who taught Anthropology at Ba Sing Se University. All of the members of team Avatar at this point had one way or the other, gotten a vacation. Sokka and the rest of the gang come to a very shady location in the desert. The Sand benders spot Appa and the Avatar’s Bison as soon as they land.

The professor tells them that he had been on several expeditions through the desert, all to no avail. He is on a search for the Lost Spirit Library of Wan Shi Tong. The Spirit who knows ten thousand things. Sokka, in much desperation to get an updated map, begins contemplating.

After much speculation and deliberation, Sokka is convinced and declares rather dramatically that he would like to go to the Spirit library for his own vacation. Toph, just joining the team, asks when she gets her own vacation. Sokka tells her “you gotta work here a little longer to qualify.”

The team takes off into the desert, accompanied by the professor. Fascinated by Appa, he launches into a monologue, asking him questions. Appa growls in response to almost everything he says. The professor then laughs, saying if only he spoke Bison. He remarked that the stories the beast could tell.

They get way into the desert on Appa but they eventually have to come down from Appa so he can rest a little bit. They have a picture of the library but are shocked to see that it is buried under hundreds of feet of sand. They all decide to climb in after Toph tells them that the inside of the library is intact and everything is in place.

Toph’s Dilemna Before Sokka’s Cactus Juice

Toph however opts to stay on the outside where she can still feel her way around. She complains that the sand is loose and shifty, which is bad enough. She doesn’t want to go underground. Meanwhile, the team spend time inside the library, eventually offending Wan Shi Tong. This causes him to decide to sink the library. He states that he is taking his knowledge back from the humans.

Just as soon as this begins, Toph senses it from the outside and quickly moves to stop it. She creates a more solid foothold from the shifty desert sand and assumes an earthbending stance which helps her prevent the library from sinking. Although this takes up all her strength and concentration. Right at that moment, rogue sand benders corner Appa. They capture the Bison as Toph struggles to hold the library from sinking. She apologizes to Appa.

Aang and the rest of the team get out of the library safe, only to be met by the news that Appa had been captured. Aang instantly became murderous.

After Si Wong Desert

After arriving in Ba Sing Se, Sokka cautioned the group not to get their hopes up, suggesting highly illogical and supernatural disasters that could still befall them, such as getting attacked by an exploding Fire Nation spoon or finding out that the city had been submerged in a sea of killer shrimp. Toph addressed his paranoia by asking if he had been “hitting the cactus juice again”.

Although the plant Sokka and Momo drank from resembled the fishhook barrel cactus in appearance, it shares the same hallucinogenic properties as the peyote cactus, which is native to southwestern Texas and central Mexico. It can be said to be the original inspiration for the plant and its hallucinogenic properties.

Chef Jenny Dorsey initially proposed to include cactus juice in Avatar: The Last Airbender Cookbook: Official Recipes from the Four Nations. To make a real-life equivalent, she intended for the drink to include alcohol or cannabidiol, but the idea was rejected by Nickelodeon.
