Bolin (Avatar): 10 Things You Should Know About The Drama King

Bolin Avatar  is one of the main characters in the Avatar: The Legend of Korra series. Known for being goofy but sweet, he is one of the best earthbenders in the franchise.

The Legend of Korra continued the story we all fell in love within Avatar: The Last Airbender; and we got to meet the new Team Avatar in a more modern setting. The new Avatar, Korra goes on adventures against evil spirits and anarchist terrorists with her friends: the inventive Asami, the cool-headed and fire bending Mako, and the loveable earth bender, Bolin Avatar.

Bolin Avatar and Mako are brothers, who you could call tragic figures; since they lost their parents as kids. However, the fact that they are orphans doesn’t keep them down. These bender brothers fight on in the pro-bending arena and later fight for their friends; and even the entire world. They won’t ever back down from a fight, and while it may look like Bolin Avatar lives on Mako’s shoulders; the earthbender is a fascinating character in his own right. Let’s get to know more about him!

1. He And Mako Used To Be Homeless

Bolin Avatar and Mako had a hard time when their parents were killed, and they clearly didn’t have anyone to take them in. So, they landed right on Republic City’s mean streets, but Mako’s responsible attitude kept the brothers alive, and they earned their keep later as pro benders.

Bolin, for one, has experience in panhandling (which is both fortunate and unfortunate for him), and he uses this to try and raise cash for the pro-bending tournament’s entry fee. Later, when he and Mako wake up in Ba Sing Se’s streets, Bolin comments how this feels unpleasantly familiar.

2. Bolin (Avatar) Is Unlucky In Love

It’s easy to agree that Bolin Avatar is a great guy, and right from the start, he’s a kind fellow who only wants to make others happy. Bolin has a wonderful time going on casual dates with Korra, but he got his heartbroken when Korra locked lips with Mako.

Bolin Avatar got over that, and later met the lovely Opal at Zaofu and tried to woo her. She liked him too, but they suffered a serious rift when Bolin cast his lot with the Earth Empire. And most of all, he got involved with the terrifying Water Tribe princess Eska, and she held a terrified Bolin tight in her icy grip. We hope that he catches a break someday.

3. He Was The Leader Of The Fire Ferrets For A While

Early in season 2, we get a brief montage of what our heroes have been up to since we last saw them after the battle with the Equalists. Mako is a rising star among the Republic City police, Asami is leading Future Industries to new heights, and Bolin has stepped into Mako’s shoes; as the team leader of the Fire Ferrets pro bending team.

But based on his new teammates’ apathetic attitude and their swift defeat in the arena, Bolin is a bit overwhelmed here. Being the boss isn’t all glory. It’s a lot of work, and everyone’s counting on you. Fortunately, Bolin soon goes back to the team where he really belongs: Team Avatar.

4. Bolin (Avatar) Has A Flair For Drama

He is a highly expressive person, and he’s quick to react loudly to something. Whether he’s hopping mad, jumping for joy, or just plain terrified or confused, Bolin makes a real show of it. This makes him animated and interesting in arguments or conversations, though his emotional ways don’t always impress others. Fortunately, this makes him a natural movie star, as we’ll soon see. Emote for all you’re worth, kid!

5. He’s A Movie Star

As mentioned earlier, Bolin Avatar is a pretty expressive guy, and it doesn’t take long for Varrick to zero in on this talent and put it to good use. For all his sleazy schemes, Varrick is smart and knows how to recruit the right people for any job, even for the movie (“mover” in the LoK world) business. Bolin Avatar becomes the new Sean Connery, rising to superstar fame in a pretty short time. He even gets his own penthouse, and the pro bending arena is packed to see his newest film.

6. He’s Got Loose Lips

This is an aspect of how expressive and dramatic Bolin can be. He’s not exactly shy or quiet; he’s quick to blurt out an opinion, idea, or a good old-fashioned complaint about nearly anything. When he first met Varrick, Asami had told him to be quiet and polite.

But when Varrick showed off a phony levitation trick and Bolin blabbed his opinion about it, Varrick was not angry but impressed with Bolin’s honesty. Let’s not forget the time he chatted up Zaheer’s terrorist friends in the back of a truck (just for fun), and correctly guessed two out of three facts about Gazan.

7. Bolin Avatar Had A Different Concept Art In The Beginning

It’s common for the concept design of a character, and the final product, to differ. Sometimes by a little, sometimes by a lot, and various details may appear or disappear at some point. Bolin, meanwhile, was first conceived as being a pretty big fellow, with a round body and a simple bowl haircut.

He got refined a bit, though, and while he’s thicker than the slender and angular Mako, he’s not exactly a Macy’s Day balloon either. He’s a pro bender, so he ought to have an athletic look.

8. He Is One Of The Few Lavabenders

This is a rare and terrifying variant of earth bending, and we first saw it in The Legend of Korra’s season 3 when Gazan used it. But soon, Bolin Avatar picked it up too, and he used these new skills to save himself, Opal, and Tenzin during the collapse of an Air Nomad temple. Later, Bolin used this bending art again to create a lava field and thus secure his escape from Earth Empire forces (along with Varrick).

9. Bolin Avatar Is Like The New Sokka

To be fair, Bolin Avatar is a bender while Sokka was not ; and Sokka was more of a strategist than Bolin is. But then again, every team needs someone to keep them grounded; and between the high-strung Mako, fiery Korra, and rather serious Asami, it’s nice to have some jokes thrown in. Bolin is a nice guy with a quick wit and a refreshingly down-to-earth attitude. If the tension is thick enough to cut with a knife, just bring in Bolin!

10. He May Be Loyal, But He Is Not A Sucker

This is an important distinction to make. Bolin Avatar and Mako are close, being orphan brothers who relied on each other to survive. And they’re steadfast teammates both as the Fire Ferrets and members of Team Avatar.

Later, Bolin joins the Earth Empire, impressed with Kuvira’s vision of uniting the fractured Earth Kingdom into a peaceful whole. But Bolin isn’t just a thoughtless tool; he, Varrick, and Zhu Lee soon realize that they are working for a monster, and cut loose not long after. Bolin’s loyalty to Kuvira strained his relationship with Opal and even his brother ; but when he and the others approached Team Avatar, Bolin was welcomed back.

Zuko’s Daughter: Everything You Need To Know About Izumi

Anyone who knows good television could easily tell you that Avatar: The Last Airbender was a show ahead of its time. Even though it was made with children in mind, it managed to capture the hearts of teens and adults as well. So great was the success that it spawned an entire franchise: from tie-in comics, toys, and even a spinoff series. The Legend of Korra may have its issues, but it is certainly a series of great classes. One thing about the show was the way it continued storylines from the predecessor: for example introducing us to Zuko’s daughter, Firelord Izumi.

However, the story of Zuko’s daughter isn’t all-encompassing, as she is a secondary character: appearing sporadically all through the series until she just doesn’t show up anymore. For fans who want to know more about the character, here are a few things about Zuko’s daughter that might interest you.

Early Life of Zuko’s Daughter

Firelord Izumi, as at the time of The Legend of Korra is the current Fire Lord of the Fire Nation; granddaughter of Ozai and Ursa, Lord Zuko’s daughter, niece of Azula and Kiyi, and mother of General Iroh. She ascended the throne in 167 AG following her father’s abdication.

Izumi was born a princess of the Fire Nation to Fire Lord Zuko after the events of the Hundred Year War. During some point in her life, she gave birth to a son; whom she named Iroh after Zuko’s beloved uncle General Iroh.  It is revealed she also had a daughter. As Crown Princess of the Fire Nation and heir to the throne; Zuko’s daughter Izumi ascended the throne as Fire Lord after Zuko’s abdication in 167 AG. He had ruled for nearly seven decades.

Zuko’s Daughter Izumi’s Personality

Zuko’s daughter is portrayed as having a calm and patient personality. Izumi is very conscious of the Fire Nation’s dark past and so is opposed to aggressive and unprovoked attacks on the other nations. She also takes her role as a leader seriously, showing no tolerance for humor when discussing military actions. She generally exudes a firm demeanor when people attempt to make her change her mind.

Zuko’s Daughter Is One Of Only Three Known Females In The Fire Nation Royal Family

While the Fire Nation Royal Family has quite an extensive history; one surprising fact that people should know about Zuko’s daughter is the fact that she is one of just three females that have been a part of the Royal Family in the Fire Nation. The other two are her aunt Azula and her unnamed daughter.

This somewhat strange fact is what makes the next entry on this list an achievement that is so impressive.

Izumi Is The First Ever Female Fire Lord

Sure, you might want to argue that Azula was briefly the Fire Lord after her father Ozai proclaimed himself as the phoenix king. But that didn’t last long, and there was no official coronation to confirm this. This makes Zuko’s daughter the first ever female to take the mantle of Fire Lord of the Fire Nation; and the official records show that as well.

It is a landmark achievement and shows how much the Avatar series has progressed since its inception way back in 2005. By supporting inclusion and gender equality, the franchise has shown its all progressive nature; which is a really good sight to see.

Zuko’s Daughter Is One Of The Most Patient And Calmest Fire Lords In History

The Fire Nation has had its fair share of insanely despicable leaders in its bloody history. These persons have time and time again plunged the world into endless conflict; and only after Zuko’s ascension did things begin to change. To fully round up the Fire Nation’s redemption, Zuko’s daughter becoming Fire Lord marked a turning point for the Fire Nation and its relations to the world.

In Izumi, the Fire Nation finally had a ruler that possessed a calm head; who could take every situation calmly, opting to analyze them instead of resorting to brute force and power.

It was just what the doctor ordered for the Fire Nation, a much-needed change in leadership.

Zuko’s Daughter Is Conscious About The Bloody History Of The Fire Nation

The Fire Nation was at the center of most conflicts for the longest time in the Avatar series, with most people pointing their fingers at them when it came to highlighting the atrocities committed at that time.

Izumi was painfully aware of this history and has always tried to lead her nation away from any conflict to prevent itself from repeating history. This was much required and shows how much the Fire Nation has evolved under her rule

It Is Not Confirmed If She Is A Firebender Or Not

For someone who commands so much respect in The Legend Of Korra, it is truly astounding that no one can confirm or deny whether Izumi can even firebend in the first place.

All signs point towards the fact that she can — given the strong genes in her family — but, without any concrete statement, one can’t really give a definitive answer to this question.

Zuko’s Daughter Takes Her Responsibilities As A Leader Very Seriously

But of course, a person like Izumi was bound to generate progress in the nation she was leading. After all, when it comes to being a leader, Izumi is someone that shouldn’t be trifled with.

She takes her responsibilities as a Fire Lord extremely seriously, refusing to bow down to any demands that aren’t in sync with the best interests of her nation. This determined nature is partly what has contributed to her being a great leader.

She Had A Great Relationship With Avatar Aang

Of course, as is the case with any level-headed leader, it was only a given that Fire Lord Izumi would maintain cordial relations with the Avatar — it was in her best interests, after all.

However, according to her son General Iroh, it seems that their bond was more than just a diplomatic one; Aang and Izumi were very close friends, which is quite a refreshing piece of information indeed.

Zuko’s Daughter Maintained Cordial Relations With The Southern Water Tribe

After all the atrocities that The Fire Nation had committed against the Water Tribes, it was only a given that Fire Lord Izumi would’ve had to perform some serious damage control to prevent things from escalating even further after the war was called.

She managed to accomplish the same in splendid fashion; creating a stable alliance with the Southern Water Tribe that would last for quite some time.

It’s Been Rumored That Her Mother Is Mai

While the identity of Zuko’s wife and Izumi’s mother might not have been revealed outright; one can confidently say that Mai is her mother.

After all, their appearances are a bit too similar for it to be just a coincidence; and the finale of Avatar: The Last Airbender; was more than clear about the fact that Zuko and Mai would be a couple for the long haul.

Zuko’s Daughter’s Role In Book Four Of The Legend Of Korra Was Supposed To Be Larger Role

Book Four is one of the most intense chapters in Korra’s journey, and it was definitely an entertaining watch for the most part. However, it did come at the cost of some side characters not getting as much screen time as they should’ve.

This can be seen in the fact that showrunners Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko; wanted to put a greater emphasis on Izumi’s character but had to change course so that the narrative would be focused on the central conflict. Perhaps this was a wise decision in hindsight, but it came at the cost of Izumi’s character being sidelined; for the most part.

Was Long Feng Really a Villain in Avatar?

Avatar the Last Airbender takes place in the middle of a hundred-year war. The universe illustrates the different traumas and realities that living during such uncertain times inflicts on the people involved. As the diverse storytelling touches on some heavier topics, there are many examples showing that the world of war is not always black and white like Long Feng.

We see this with characters like Zuko or Jet, who really complicate our understanding of good and bad. Particularly, is someone really an evil bad guy if what they’re doing seems right?

Of all the “evil-doers” of the show, Long Feng is one character exhibited as inherently evil. As kids, it’s easy to see how this bison-stealing official is a bad guy, but taking a look again, were we a little harsh on the Grand Secretariat?

Who Is Long Feng?

Before going into this argument, you may need a bit of a refresher. Back in Book Two: Earth of ATLA, our gang finds their way to Ba Sing Se. The once-great city that managed to stand its ground throughout the way managed to surprisingly stay the same throughout the years- The city seems strong, prosperous, and otherwise oblivious of the war around them. Even the King seems to have no idea what is going on in terms of the fire nation.

The King is not the only one seemingly oblivious to everything. That’s when we meet his Grand Secretariat (and leader of the Dai Li Secret Police), Long Feng. He’s a formidable and charismatic individual that screams politician. He’s also the guy covering up war evidence and keeping up the image of a peaceful and prosperous nation despite everything going on.

Long Feng has a classic rag to riches story and made his way from the bottom to the top. He went from the son of a merchant to the most powerful man in the entire city (considering that the King was essentially his puppet).

The War and Ba Sing Se

The whole “there is no war in Ba Sing Se” became a funny meme – but it doesn’t change the fact it was creepy and an illustration of a real problem. Although their little Utopia felt cut off from the rest of the world, it couldn’t be that they managed to stay naïve this whole time, right?

It’s pretty impossible for a nation to have gone this long without recognizing a blazing war surrounding them. Above that, there are refugees and other people that surely must have heard of the war. Even beloved Uncle Iroh went against (and lost) to the powerful city. It doesn’t take the gang very long to realize that there really is something wrong with the city.

Instead of people being genuinely oblivious, the situation was more that they were forced to keep quiet. It was difficult to tell in the beginning why this would happen at all – until they uncovered the crimes of Long Feng. This is where things really start to get tricky.

It turns out – Long Feng was knowingly doing this so that he may preserve a Utopia. His argument was that keeping the King and citizens in the dark was how he was to maintain the last remaining Utopia?

Was Long Feng Evil?

This is the whole part where the gang argues that he’s wrong, and he fights back. Of course, the antagonist to our protagonist is always the bad guy. And let’s be frank, Long Feng did a bunch of evil things. Ignoring the whole lying bit – he committed some serious crimes. He’s responsible for kidnappings, brainwashing, imprisonment, and murder!

He took away free speech from his people and forced a strict dictatorship onto his citizens, all in the name of keeping up the image. There is also something pretty dystopian about the entire situation. The government controlling you and keeping big secrets is something that has kept conspiracists baffled for years – in the real world. The entire situation at Ba Sing Se is one that people have a fear of in real life as there is always a debate on how much control the government should have and what can go wrong when they keep secrets to try to protect its people.

Still – while we’ll never justify murder, you have to admit that it seems like Long Feng had good enough intentions when you really think about it. The hundred-year war destroyed nations all over the world. During Avatar’s adventures, we got a glimpse into lives where families were torn apart, genocides were committed, and other atrocities took place in the name of trying to win. Even if you aren’t directly affected, it’s a pretty difficult topic to swallow.

There were many nations in the earth kingdom decimated by the fire nation – Ba Sing Se was just strong enough to stand their ground. They didn’t even turn away refugees, just tried to make it, so their stories weren’t heard – which is bad, but you do have to really question the intentions of Long Feng.

Even when he was called out, and the King tried to imprison him for treason, the secret police remained loyal to him. Of course, while their loyalty was shotty, he seemed to act in intentions to remain leader over Ba Sing Se. He didn’t want Ba Sing Se to end up in the hands of the fire nation, and he was willing to cross some lines to get there.

Sure, he is power-hungry and manipulative, but when you think about the alternative, can you really blame the guy? Think of all the horrible things that happened to nations under the control of the fire nation. In a way, one could argue that he wasn’t evil; he just had a poor way of getting there.

Was Long Feng Successful?

In the end, he bites off more than he can chew. While he is under lock and key, Princess Azula and her crew mask themselves as Kyoshi Warriors and break-in. Seeing this as the opportunity of a lifetime, he conspires with Azula to take everyone down on the condition he would get the right to rule Ba Sing Se.

She agrees with him, and in return, he “gives” her the secret police loyalty. While she does use them to battle off the Avatar and crew, she also does some pretty expected double-crossing. While Avatar and company do get away (with Appa in tow), it was a horrible battle. Aang gets killed by Azula, and there’s that whole drama with Zuko double-crossing Iroh. Of course, Katara saves Aang with the magic water, and Zuko finds his road to redemption, but no one could really count this battle as a win for the “good guys.”

To add insult to injury, Azula takes control of Ba Sing Se. When Long Feng tries to take control over his secret police – he realizes that he is no longer in control at all. In all of his efforts to keep control over the city, he handed it over to the fire nation. This is a pretty predictable move that was easily avoided by not getting buddy-buddy with Azula. Whether or not it was a bigger blow to him that his city lost their illusion of peace (or that he lose power) is up for debate.

What Happed to Long Feng?

The nail in the coffin here is that the once great and powerful Long Feng is never mentioned again. He is merely a footnote on a horrible and embarrassing event that would be undone anyways once the fire nation loses the war. What happens to him while the fire nation rules and after isn’t known at all.

We can speculate a bit here, though. Frankly, Azula doesn’t seem like someone who would just let him walk away from the incident (although he’d have absolutely nothing to run away to). Aside from ruling the secret police, Long Feng was an accomplished bender as well. He’s capable of being a formidable foe, so it makes sense to just lock him away.

Following the end of the war, imprisonment is pretty likely considering his stance with the Avatar gang and his entire collection of crimes. After all, he was the one who kept Appa as a hostage and murdered Jet. While he was totally doing some horrible things, you just really have to wonder if it is fair to call him evil.

What do you think about Long Feng? Are there any other characters you think were portrayed a little unfairly? Let us know in the comments below.

Korra vs Aang: The Ultimate Comparison

Korra vs Aang: The Ultimate Comparison

Korra vs Aang is one of the most interesting comparisons ever. We have seen both of these master Avatars in their respective shows. Aang and Korra displayed their respective skills in their own dedicated TV shows. But a comparison between both these Avatars is really not a justified comparison.

Because we all know that the new Avatar always improves on his past selves. Then likely according to this rule, Korra is definitely the stronger one. Both of these great Avatars were separated by quite a time. And during this time the civilization grew at a rapid pace.

Aang existed in a world where four civilizations were dominant. Although sandbenders and swampbenders did exist in Aang’s time. They were relatively isolated from the rest of the world. But after Aang formed the United Republic of Nations.

The population there inter-married among different civilizations giving rise to stronger individuals. As republic city became one of the most populous cities among the four nations it also had its fair share of problems. At Aang’s time the four nations did not mix up too much but in Republic City, all nations interacted on a daily basis.

This interaction allowed the benders to develop new and innovative techniques to take on others. Even the non-benders worked out ways to neutralize the benders because of this daily interaction. The new technological advances at the time of Korra were not even considered to be possible at Aang’s time.

Even the age of both these Avatars when they were active is not evenly matched. So in our opinion, this comparison is not fair. But for this article, we will still list the strengths of both these Avatars and try to conclude the victor among them.

Aang’s Strengths

In this section, we will list some of the strengths that Aang possesses that make him more powerful than Korra.

Aang’s Airbending

The first strength of Aang is that he was the youngest Airbending master of his time. He achieved this feat at the very green age of just 12 years old. He even invented the Air scooter himself at this young age which made him eligible for the title of Airbending Master. When he was discovered after a hundred years by Katara and Sokka. He was already an Airbending master. This Airbending superiority will likely tilt the balance in favor of Aang in any likely scenario of Korra vs Aang.

Discipline

Aang is more disciplined than Korra in all respects. He knows how to control his emotions and does not allow his feelings to cloud his judgment. Even when he found out about the genocide of his people Aang controlled his emotions. Whenever he visited any Air Temple he was visibly distressed because of their current condition as compared to when he visited the temples a hundred years earlier.

A part of Aang also blamed himself for this genocide. As being the Avatar it was his duty to maintain the balance but he ran away from his duties. And even after such a huge loss he never allowed his feelings to take a hold of him.

He did what he had to do to defeat Firelord Max Ozai carrying the weight of such a huge loss. Whereas Korra is the opposite of Aang in this regard. She always allows her feelings to cloud her judgment and because of this steadfast nature of Korra, she always gets into trouble.

Spirituality

Aang is more connected to his spiritual center as compared to Korra. Because of his upbringing in an Air Temple, Aang had better understanding of spirituality. Therefore he also understood the power he possessed in the form of Raava.

It was because of this strong connection to his spiritual center Aang was able to control his Avatar self and stop himself from killing Max Ozai. All his past selves offered him advice that he must do what is necessary but Aang found out another way and took Ozai’s bending ability away.

But Korra is more susceptible to her feelings and more likely to be blinded by anger. This was also evident during her Airbending training as well.

Korra’s Strengths

In this section, we will list some of the strengths that Korra has which make her stronger than Aang.

Physical Strength

Korra is older than Aang in The Legend of Korra. As a result, she has had more training and is in peak physical form. She also has the ability to take punches and then go after her enemy again. We never got to see this side of Aang is Avatar: The Last Airbender as he was just twelve years old. This physical strength allows Korra to fight for prolonged durations without a sign of fatigue.

Metal Bending

Korra and Aang both do not possess any mastery of the bending of rare elements. But Korra becomes a master Metalbender when she takes on Kavira. Kavira was a master Metalbender who wanted to form the Earth Nation empire by taking over all the land where Fire Nation colonies were developed. She also claimed that Avatar Aang stole Earth Nation’s Land by forming the United Republic of Nations.

So in order to defeat her, Korra also mastered the art of metal bending in addition to mastering the four core elements as well. This rare talent is sure to tilt the odds in Korra’s favor in the case of Korra vs Aang fight.

Conclusion

Both Korra and Aang are extremely talented Avatars of their times. But in our opinion, Aang is the more powerful one among the two. Because not only does he know how to use the raw power of Avatar form. But he also knows when to use it.

Aang will only use his powers as a last resort and will try to avoid it. This makes Aang more powerful as he chooses not to use his power to defeat his opponents physically but he also tries to subdue them in all respects by offering them a fair chance to avoid the fight.

Even in case of a fight, Aang’s decisions have always been a little unorthodox as by the avatar standards. Every past self of Aang advised him to kill Ozai but Aang still found another way making him someone who can follow his own path as well.

One can beg to differ and declare Korra as the winner because of the level of skill she shows in The Legend of Korra. But all of this grandeur of her show was because of the success of its predecessor. As a sequel, Korra’s show had more budget and public interest as well.

This prompted the creators to develop something that was even more appealing than Avatar: The Last Airbender. If Aang and Korra existed in the same universe or if Aang’s show is remade now it will definitely be grander than The Legend Of Korra with Aang emerging out as the victor in any Korra vs Aang competition.

Bumi vs. Kya vs. Tenzin: Understanding The Avatar Sibling Rivalry

Sibling rivalry is a huge problem for everyone, but what do you do when your father was the savior of the world. Bumi vs. Kya vs. Tenzin were the three very different children that Aang and Katara had offscreen following the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

It’s always interesting to see how young TV protagonists we “grew up with” ultimately acted like adults and passed on to their children. While their family always remained close, there are definitely some major conflicts between the three siblings that are worth exploring. While it seems pretty clear that the parents in this situation picked their favorites, did the audience share their sentiment?

Bumi vs. Kya vs. Tenzin & Who Were There Children?

Aang and Katara had three children in the end – Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin in that order. All three grew up and played major roles in the Korra universe, all having a direct influence on their father’s reincarnation at one point or another. While all impressive, they were certainly different from one another.

Bumi: Bumi was the first-born son and the only non-bender of them (initially). While his younger siblings were off mastering their bending techniques, Bumi got more involved in the military. He was a well-respected commander with a track record of success – even earning the praise of General Iroh.

Although retired by the time we really meet in The Legend of Korra, he held a big position as the commander of the Second Division of the United Forces. As many fans were quick to realize, Aang named Bumi after his earthbending childhood friend. Like Bumi, he is a more comical character with a lot of jokes and shenanigans that everyone kind of groans at (although they do secretly enjoy him, you can tell).

Appearance-wise, he is the one sibling that really brings together both Aang and Katara’s traits – with light skin and blue eyes. While he relied heavily on strategizing and battle accomplishments, he does ultimately get Airbending powers. Although shocked at first, he does come to train them and takes part in defending Republic City.

The Kya Story: (Bumi vs. Kya vs. Tenzin)

The middle child, Kya, is the spitting image of Katara. She is the only one that inherited the darker skin and Waterbending. Like her mother, Kya has healing abilities, although she acknowledges that her mom is still a bit better.

Following Aang’s death, she moves to be with her mother in the water tribe after traveling around the world. She continues to visit Republic city on a regular basis and a very capable warrior. This is reflected in her strong personality as she never backs down – very comparable to the young Katara we were used to seeing. Although not as happy-go-lucky as her older brother, she is nonetheless very playful and likes to tease Tenzin (and apparently scared him a bit as a child).

Another striking characteristic of her is she is an LGBT+ character, having an attraction towards women. While the universe was always diverse, this was a pretty big deal – especially considering how supportive her whole family was towards her.

The Tenzin Story (Bumi vs. Kya vs. Tenzin)

As the baby of the family, Tenzin is often picked on by his older siblings. It’s easy to see how as he is a very strict character who takes every job seriously. Although he is no doubt compassionate and caring, he is not someone who likes to joke and seems to take his duty as Aang’s son seriously. How could he not?

As the only Airbending son to the Airbending Avatar, it’s easy to see why he has a lot of pressure on him. If you remember, the previous show, Avatar: The Last Airbender, let us learn about the fate of the air nomads pretty early on. The fire nation wiped them out in a horrible genocide leaving only Aang to carry on the legacy of an entire culture and nation.

It’s easy to see how he was overjoyed when his final son possessed Airbending skills. As such, Aang put a lot of time and effort into teaching Tenzin all the ways of the air nomads. He wanted to make sure that Tenzin would continue on and preserve the culture (and possibly pass his bending skills off to young heirs).

He has a strong sense of duty and often feels like he’s the only responsible one out of his siblings – but you have to admit there was a lot of weight on his shoulders. Luckily, he had children and went on to teach Korra about Airbending.

Without the pressure to master the elements in under a year (as with Aang’s situation), Korra lived with the monk and his family during her training. In many ways, he also became a father to Korra (as well as his biological children, who became benders as well).

What Was Their Dynamic?

Their family dynamic is pretty complicated, and it’s easy to see why. Those kids had a lot to live up to and, even as adults, seemed to carry some heavy baggage from the pressures. There is something so organic and natural about the three siblings interacting with each other, though, that most people can relate to – especially in families of three or more kids.

When stranded together, they tend to bicker (mostly against Tenzin’s lecturing), but they always pull through for each other. Anything they “held against” each other of kids, they addressed at one point or another during the show – including Bumi’s annoyance of not having bending or Tenzin acting all high and mighty when he wasn’t the only one to make sacrifices.

In the end, they are a family that would be incomplete without each other. While we will still try to crown a favorite, it’s important to point out that the siblings need each other to be themselves – otherwise, it just wouldn’t make sense.

Who Is the Best? (Bumi vs. Kya vs. Tenzin)

When you put all of their accomplishments out there like this, it’s hard to pick a favorite. Every one of the siblings has its own strengths and weaknesses that we can completely relate to. Maybe who you like the best has to do with your feelings between your own siblings. While there is no one that gives you a reason to hate them, there is one sibling that seems to have the most entertainment value and leads to the least amount of problems.

We’ll have to give this one to Bumi! Being the only non-bending child must have been tough (especially as the first-born son). However, getting Airbending must have been a lot to handle. In many ways, he feels like the perfect personality embodiment of Sokka, Iroh, and Aang’s childhood friend he was named after.

There is also something impressive about an underdog who retains their sense of humor and confidence despite the cards he was dealt. The show would not have been the same without the loveable general.

Who is your favorite of Aang and Katara’s kids? Do you think Bumi is overrated? We want to hear from you! Let us know in the comments below!

The Ultimate Guide To The Avatar Tattoo Of Avatar Aang

Anybody who has watched Avatar: The Last Airbender is familiar with the arrow-shaped tattoo on the body of Avatar Aang. Even if anybody hasn’t watched the entire series and is only familiar with the show. They still might have noticed the unique arrow-shaped tattoo that Aang had all over his body. With the most noticeable arrow ending on his forehead. These unique blue-colored arrow-shaped tattoos were all over Aang’s body and were a part of his personality, symbolizing his mastery over the art of Airbending.

This unique Avatar tattoo is a part of the Air Nomad civilization. And not only does the Nomads have this tattoo. But their Flying Bisons also had these unique arrow-shaped tattoos on their bodies as well. This shows the significance of these tattoos to the Air Nomads and their entire civilization. Not only does Aang possess these tattoos. But Yangchen, the Air Nomad Avatar before Aang also had this arrow-shaped tattoo.

History Of Aang

Aang was born in 12 AG and selected the toys associated with the Avatar to play. By selecting these toys he confirmed his identity as the Avatar and was therefore taken by the monks to their air Temple. He received his training at the Southern Air Temple. And also visited the Eastern Air Temple to choose his animal companion. Each Air Nomad was paired with a Flying Bison that would be the Nomad’s partner for his life. And Flying Bisons were the only way to reach the secluded Air temples.

Aang’s Early Life

Aang chose his beloved Bison named Appa, who assisted Aang throughout his life. And was also thought to be the only surviving Flying Bison in all of the four kingdoms after Aang woke up after a hundred years. The traditional age to reveal the identity of The Avatar was 16 at the time of Aang.

But due to the impending threat of the Fire Nation waging war on the rest of the Kingdoms. The identity of Aang was revealed at the age of 12. This made him burdened because his friends would not play with him anymore. They stated that because Aang was the Avatar, he had an unfair advantage over the rest of the students.

The only person that treated Aang with love was Monk Gyatso, but due to his soft attitude towards Aang. The rest of the monks decided to send Aang to the Eastern Air Temple to complete his training. After learning this Aang left the temple on himself and was trapped in a storm during which he was nearly killed. But the Avatar state of Aang protected him and Appa by hibernating themselves inside a frozen bubble.

He is discovered by Katara and Sokka after a hundred years and the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender (TV Series) takes place. And we see in the series that Aang masters the remaining elements. And goes on to defeat the Fire Lord Max Ozai and fulfills his destiny to restore the balance to the four nations.

Significance of Aang’s Avatar Tattoo

The Avatar tattoo on Aang’s body is associated with the mastery of Airbending. Every Air Nomad who masters Airbending receives this signature arrow-shaped tattoo. This tattoo is the symbol of a Master Airbender. Aang received this tattoo when he was just twelve years old. Because he mastered Airbending at such a young age and became the youngest Master Airbender in the history of Nomads till that time.

When he was just six years old he was far better at Airbending than children twice his age. And he even emulated his teachers by the age of 10. He was given these tattoos by the monks at the age of 12 only because of his invention of the Air Scooter.

Master Airbenders are tattooed with five light blue arrows: one extending from the base of the spine to the forehead, one for each arm pointing to the hands, and likewise for the legs and feet. And when he was discovered by Katara and Sokka, his tattoos revealed his mastery of Airbending.

History Of This Tattoo

The earliest known ancestors of the Air Nomads used to live in turtle cities and were given the power to control Air by the Lion turtle when they left the cities. These ancestors were not masters but had similar tattoos but these tattoos did not end on the arrow shape that we now see. When these people evolved they learned the Airbending techniques from the Sky Bisons. The Bisons were the first Airbenders and the Air Nomads used to respect them highly because they taught the Nomads the art of Airbending.

These arrow-shaped markings were naturally found on the bodies of the Flying Bisons. So the Nomads modified their tattoos to match the natural markings of the Sky Bisons as a sign of respect. Afterward, every Master Airbender was awarded these tattoos that we see on Avatar Yangchen and Avatar Aang.

Zuko Without Scar (Avatar): The Making of The Greatest Redemption Story

We all know about Zuko and his unlucky and difficult childhood. Zoku is one of those rare animated characters that have achieved massive popularity. Zuko is one of the greatest firebending masters. And is also the one who taught Avatar Aang the art of firebending. Although, initially Zoku was the person who wanted to capture the Avatar the most. Because it was the only way to restore his honor in the eyes of his father. And was also his only way to reclaim his lost position of the prince of the Fire Nation. Zuko’s most important trait in his appearance is his scar and some might not even recognize Zuko without his scar.

In this article, we will look at the reason behind Zuko’s scar. And also look at his troubled childhood where his own father did not even appreciate his young son and became ready to kill him on Azulon’s order. Zuko was a part of a dysfunctional family. His father wanted to become the Fire Lord of the Fire Nation. And his sister was a sadist from the start. His sister Azula was very well-gifted in her ability of firebending so his father always preferred Azula over Zuko.

History Of Zuko Without His Scar

Zuko was born as the prince of the Fire Nation to the second son of Fire Lord Azulon. He was born with a clear face and did not have his scar from birth. His father was Max Ozai who himself went on to become the Fire Lord himself. Zuko also had a sister named Princess Azula. And his mother was the granddaughter of the Avatar Roku. Her name was Ursa. And Azulon married Ursa to Ozai to ensure that his bloodline remains strong.

The other son of Azulon was named Prince Iroh and was destined to become the next Fire Lord by birthright. Iroh was one of the most decorated and celebrated Generals of the Fire Army and won numerous notable victories in the 100 Year War. Iroh also had a son named Lu Ten whom he loved greatly. Lu Ten also accompanied his father on his exploits in the war.

Ozai Becomes The Fire Lord

All of this changed after the Battle of Ba Sing Se. When Iroh attacked this greatest city of Earth Kingdom. He was defeated and also lost Lu Ten in the Battle of Ba Sing Se. This left him deeply traumatized. Wanting to take advantage of the situation, Ozai asked his father to replace Iroh as the next Fire Lord as he has been defeated in an all-important battle. And his bloodline has also ended after the death of his only son, Lu Ten.

This suggestion deeply angered Azulon. And he asked Ozai that how could he be so cruel and not understand the pain of his only brother. Azulon ordered Ozai to kill his firstborn and only then he will be able to understand the pain that Iroh is experiencing. But when Zuko’s mother finds out about this she makes Ozai a deal to protect Zuko.

As a part of the deal, she will make an untraceable poison to kill Azulon after which Ozai can take his place as the Fire Lord. But Ozai adds that Ursa will also have to leave the palace after completing her end of the deal. To which she agrees and leaves the place forever. And After the death of Azulon, Ozai becomes the Fire Lord by declaring it as the final wish of his father.

The Reason Behind Zuko’s Scar

After the death of Lu Ten, Iroh was emotionally shattered and only found solace in caring for Zuko as he would have done for his own son. Iroh loved Zuko just like he loved Lu Ten. He also chose to accompany Zuko when he was banished by the Fire Lord Ozai. Iroh loved Zuko to such an extent that he left his position and power behind only to be with Zuko and guide him.

When Zuko is a teenager, he accompanies his uncle Iroh to a meeting in the War Chamber. Iroh has asked Zuko not to speak anything. But when a general presented a plan in which a younger battalion of soldiers will be sacrificed as a diversion. Zuko could not stay silent and dissented with the General’s plan. The Fire Lord took it as a sign of disrespect and asked Zuko to settle the matter with Agni Kai. Zuko agreed thinking that he will face the General. But in reality, he had to face his father.

After learning that he will duel his own father in the Agni Kai, Zuko surrendered and did not fight. His father took it as a sign of weakness and punished Zuko by burning the left side of his face and scarring him for life in the process. And that was the last day that anyone would see Zuko without his scar.

The scene of his nephew burning was so cruel and painful for Iroh that he looked away and could not look at it. His Father further banished Zuko from the Fire Nation and further ordered that the only way Zuko’s position and honor will be restored is when he captures The Avatar.

Zuko’s Life After Banishment

Zuko got his ship and crew because of Iroh’s influence and together they went on to look for The Avatar. Zuko’s face was severely burned and could not heal completely leaving the trademark scar. This scar became the main personality point of Zuko as everyone from the Fire Nation instantly recognized him because of his scar.

Zuko initially believed that it was his destiny to capture The Avatar to restore his honor. But with Iroh’s guidance, and his own journey into all other Kingdoms made him realize that Fire Nation is wrong. And he truly recognized his destiny to help The Avatar. And became Aang’s master and taught The Avatar Firebending. Zuko played an essential role in the fate of the Avatar Universe and the path he chose resulted in the ending of the 100 Year War.

Lego Avatar: What Happened to The Last Air Bender Sets?

Lego dolls have become quite popular in the toy world. They have been able to gain considerable following even in the movie industry. For most superhero movies, there is always a Lego movie accompanying it, maybe not immediately but subsequently. In this light, Lego Avatar dolls seem almost impossible not to have been a thing in the toy-making world.

Avatar franchise is one of the biggest and fastest-growing franchises in the movie industry. The fandom for the series is so large that it would be regarded as foolish not to have an industry to cater for the needs of the fans. The fandom being as large as it is has thus, birthed the creation of a vast array of product lines to see to the needs of this fanbase. Lego Avatar being one of these product lines, the Last Airbender has grown in size and so has the demand for these products.

Lego Avatar dolls for the Last Airbender are available everywhere for purchase. Here are some that you might find interesting and desire to purchase. For a proper introduction of what these dolls are; Lego Avatar: The Last Airbender is a series of LEGO sets manufactured by none other than the LEGO company.

They were manufactured based on the Television series, Avatar The Last Airbender. However, due to a competition between Avatar, The Last Airbender, and SpongeBob SquarePants, the LEGO theme had to, unfortunately, be discontinued. This made the set one of the shortest running sets in LEGO history that had only two sets.

The two sets were released and debuted as part of the first wave of Nickelodeon-themed LEGO sets. This was following a partnership between the children’s network, Nickelodeon, and a very popular Danish toy company in late 2005. In this wave, Nickelodeon decided to include two of its most popular franchises at that time which was Avatar: The Last Airbender and SpongeBob SquarePants.

In late August 2006, the first five Nickelodeon LEGO sets hit retail shelves. The first two were based on Avatar The Last Airbender series and the other three were on SpongeBob SquarePants. The Avatar product line never really did last beyond its first LEGO outing. Its SpongeBob counterpart however did perform slightly better. It went on to remain a theme until around 2009. It was then reintroduced from 2011-2012, followed by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Why The Avatar Lego Sets Did Not Continue

The discontinuation of the theme at that time was partly due to the belief that Avatar: The Last Airbender would eventually become obsolete. This was because only three seasons were planned and it was originally set to end the year after the first wave of the products. Nevertheless, the sets produced are based only on Book One, and therefore recreate events solely from this time frame.

The series at this time had not yet introduced characters like Toph, and Zuko as the friend of team Avatar that he later became. As at the time or the release of the set which is Book One time frame, he was still bent on capturing Aang and restoring his honor. There were only two new piece molds introduced in this theme, those for Momo and the wings of Aang’s glider.

Aang is the only individual character from the series that appears in both sets. Sokka and Momo only appear in “3828 Air Temple”, and Katara and Zuko only appear in “3829 Fire Nation Ship”. Other mini-figures merely portray generic Fire Nation soldiers. Important recurring characters that were already present in Book One and are not represented in any way in this theme are Appa, Iroh, and Zhao.

The Blue Spirit: The Last Airbender
Water

The Blue Spirit: The Last Airbender

The Blue Spirit is the 13th episode of Book One: Water of the Avatar, The Last Airbender series. The episode debuted on the 17th of June, 2005.

Much as we came to fully find out, Aang is loyal to a fault. One of the oddest conversations one can choose to have with an enemy is asking if they could be friends in another life.

“HE WAS ONE OF THE BEST FRIENDS I EVER HAD, AND HE WAS FROM THE FIRE NATION, JUST LIKE YOU. IF WE KNEW EACH OTHER BACK THEN, DO YOU THINK WE COULD HAVE BEEN FRIENDS, TOO?” Aang said to Zuko.

The Blue Spirit is an episode in Book One. It is also the identity of a masked rebel that always stood against Zhao. But who is the Blue Spirit?

Who is The Blue Spirit?

The Blue Spirit is an alter ego that is used by Princess Zuko of the Fire Nation. The Fandom is not entirely sure why Prince Zuko assumed the alter ego, The Blue Spirit. Much speculation is that he did it simply to be able to handle certain things he could not handle without his face being seen.

The Blue Spirit fights with twin swords, never fire bending even though there is a fire bender behind the mask. The idea is to keep his identity a secret.

The Blue Spirit Episode

The Blue Spirit as earlier mentioned is an episode that is specially dedicated to the Blue Spirit. It is an episode that mostly introduced the character to the screen and gave room for development all through the series moving forward.

In the beginning of the episode, Zhao is promoted to admiral and he then enlists the help of a group of professional archers called the Yuyan Archers. Meanwhile, our heroes come down with a nasty case of the flu. Sokka and Katara had become sick due to being exposed to a storm previously. This leaves just Aang and puts him in a shot. He has to go to a herbalist to find a cure. After he gets the cure, he is caught by the Yuyan Archers and imprisoned by Zhao. The cure is to suck in some frogs.

A strange warrior with a blue mask comes to rescue him from Zhao’s clutches and they escape together. Aang later finds out as the warrior is knocked that he is none other than Zuko. He wonders if the two of them could be friends. This leads to the monologue in the opening paragraph of the article. Zuko, choosing to remain enemies, attacks, but Aang, being prepared for it, escapes and cures his friends.

Blue Spirit Scenes

The episode opens with a messenger hawk approaching a Fire Nation fortress. This fortress is called Pohuai Stronghold.

It opens to the courtyard, showing several highly skilled archers practice their skill in the wide stronghold. Commander Zhao and Colonel Shinu are observing them and vehemently arguing. Colonel Shinu has denied Zhao’s request to use the group of advanced bowmen, whom he identifies as the Yuyan Archers, in the commander’s quest to capture the Avatar.

He deems Zhao’s obsession to be a “vanity project” of his rather than a part of the Hundred Year War. As they debate the use of the archers, a hawk arrives with news from Fire Lord Ozai that Zhao has been promoted to admiral.

With his new authority, he tells a grudging Colonel Shinu that his request is now an order. Shinu bows in submission and leaves. Little to  Zhao’s knowledge that a figure clad in dark clothes and a blue mask is perched on the roof above him and has heard the entire conversation. The figure silently retreats into the shadows and faces from the scene unnoticed.

Sokka & Katara’s Post Storm Flu

Meanwhile, the Team has stopped to rest in the ruins of Taku. Katara is caring for an ill and delirious Sokka who is talking nonsense.

Sokka is fully convinced that Appa can talk and that he can now suddenly earthbound. He attempts to display his skills. Katara tells Aang that the illness is a result of his exposure to the storm that he was recently caught in.

Aang comes back from an unsuccessful hunt for ginger root. He sees that Katara has also gotten affected even if she tries to remain brave for a while. Aang returns with a map to a herbalist institute on a nearby mountain. Katara states that Sokka is not in any condition to go there.

She says that all he needs is some rest, just as she begins to cough herself. Katara strongly protests that she is fine. Aang realizes she has the same illness as Sokka and decides to travel to the herbalist alone. He originally wants to take a glider but as lightning flashes across the sky, he thinks better of it and decides to go on foot instead. He then begins running quickly with the aid of his air bending.

Enter The Blue Spirit

Meanwhile, on Zuko’s ship, Lt. Jee is going over a map with Prince Zuko to make plans to continue the search for the Avatar. The ship is suddenly overshadowed by a large Fire Nation Naval ship. This causes Zuko to wonder what they want.

Uncle Iroh, in the middle of a Pai Sho game as usual, speculates rather inaccurately that they may want to play Pai Sho. What they actually came to do was to inform Prince Zuko and his crew that all information regarding the Avatar is to be reported to Admiral Zhao. This makes Zuko boil internally with rage but manages to control himself. They reveal to all present crew members that Zhao has been promoted and is now in charge of the search for the Avatar.

Zuko informs the Fire Nation soldier that he has no information to provide and orders them to get off his ship and let them pass. Zuko and his crew are then informed that Zhao is not permitting the passage of ships in or out of the area.

Even still, Zuko again demands that the soldiers get off his ship. Iroh, seemingly indifferent to the conversation, declares enthusiastically that he has won the pot in his Pai Sho game. He however encourages them in an effort to get them to play again. He says that they almost got him this time.

In the forest, Fire Nation lookouts are hiding out in concealed outposts. One of the guards picks up a wanted poster for the Avatar and comments that it is “pretty amazing.” He says that the Avatar can create tornadoes and run faster than the wind.

The other soldier, who was peering through a telescope, quickly dismisses the claims, calling it Fire Lord propaganda. When Aang soon speeds by, unknowingly wreaking havoc on the outpost, the soldier blows a signal horn to alert others of Aang’s presence.

Meanwhile, Sokka, still sick, begs his sister to get him some water. Katara, weakened by the sudden takeover of the sickness herself, tells Momo to take her water skin to the river and fill it with water. However, Momo does not understand what Katara is saying but he departs with the water skin nonetheless.

Aang Gets Captured

On his quest to find a cure, the herbalist tells him to go to the swamp at the bottom of the mountain. He begins to gather the frogs as he’s been told when the archers ambush and capture him.

Aang is brought back to Pohuai Stronghold, where he is kept secured in a large room, his arms and legs are shackled to two posts to keep him from bending, and the room is guarded by four men.

Zhao enters the room and quickly begins to gloat. He soon points out that Aang’s century-long game of hide and seek with the Fire Nation is over. Angered, Aang challenges him to a duel, but he declines. He then moves on to a trick of his own and asks Aang instead how it feels to be the only Airbender left and whether or not he misses his people.

He does this, taunting him over the murder of his entire people. He tells Aang that he would not be killed like his people were, since that would only result in his reincarnation as the next Avatar. This would require the Fire Nation to hunt him down again.

Instead, he would be kept alive. He sinisterly hints saying “but just barely.”

As Zhao turns his back and walks away, Aang air bends with his mouth, sending the momentarily inattentive firebender flying off his feet. Zhao gets slammed into the wall and falls briefly to the floor. Getting to his feet, Zhao declares that Aang can blow all the wind that he wants, as his situation is futile since there is no escaping Pohuai Stronghold and no one is coming to rescue him.

Meanwhile, a feverish Sokka asks an equally ill Katara for water again. At this time, all she does is assure him that Momo should return soon. When the winged lemur returned, he however did not fill the water skin. Momo returns and brings them a dead mouse, which he drops on Katara’s chest, much to her disgust. Katara once again pleads with him again for water and Momo departs. Katara then begins to wonder what is keeping Aang.

Blue Spirit saves Aang

Outside the Fire Nation fortress, the figure with the blue mask remains hidden patiently behind the shrubs. He sees his chance when a supply cart passes him by. He swiftly rolls underneath the cart and grabs hold, letting the cart do the rest and get him into the stronghold.

As the cart is halted at a checkpoint, a Fire Nation guard inspects the interior of the vehicle. When he moves to look underneath the cart, the masked figure moves to the other side of the wagon and hides inside, thus gaining access to the heavily guarded fortress. After the cart stops to unload, the figure stealthily sneaks out and makes his way up a nearby staircase.

Inside his cell, Aang hears some commotion and eyes the door with apprehension as the lock is being turned. He gasps as a masked figure enters and unsheathes his dual broadswords. Swinging the weapons, the man advances on Aang, who screams.

To Aang’s surprise, however, the figure slices through his bonds, freeing him. As the figure retreats without saying a word, Aang asks him who he is, what is going on, and wonders if the man is there to rescue him. The figure does not respond, though opens the door and signals for the Avatar to follow him.

Believing he means him no harm, Aang follows him. He passes by the tied-up guard and notices his partially frozen frogs are making their escape through another hallway. Trying to gather them, Aang is pulled away by the masked stranger, though protests loudly that his friends need to suck on the animals.

They eventually are able to leave the fortress in which the Blue Spirit gets knocked out in the process. Aang moves to unmask the face of his helper and gets taken aback to find out its none other than the Fire Nation Prince who wants him in chains. He considers leaving him behind but eventually decides to rescue him. Zuko soon wakes up to Aang’s monologue; he tries to attack the Airbender but Aang, being prepared for this, escapes into the trees.

Avatar Nutrition Cookbook: A Real Guide to Bender Nutrition

Avatar is a series that besides showing us a lot of action in the domain of the four elements also explores different cultures through their kingdoms and nations, which is why Nickelodeon will seek to show this universe nutrition with the help of a cookbook.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Cookbook: Official Recipes from the Four Nations is a compilation that plans to be published in August 2021. Yes, it’s quite a wait, but during this time author Jenny Dorsey will seek the support of writers, creators, fans, and renowned chefs from around the world to prepare the dishes that exist in the series.

“From the shores of Kyoshi Island to the crowded streets of Ba Sing Se, this official cookbook collects signature dishes from all four nations, like vegetarian plates of the Air Nomads, fiery entrees from the Fire Nation, seafood from the North and South Poles, and delectable cuisine from the Earth Kingdom”

Avatar Nutrition

Thinking carefully there is a rich variety of foods that appear within the series; the plum soup of the water tribe, the fruit cakes of the air nomads, Uncle Iroh’s classic Jasmine tea, and more, so there is enough material to compile these dishes into a cookbook.

Jenny Dorsey, the author, is a professional chef, food writer, speaker, and social entrepreneur based in Los Angeles. On her website, she describes herself using food to express the full range of human emotions and social commentary on the world around us.

She believes that food has a special way of exposing the banal routine and social norms in which we find ourselves. It can be a powerful medium for storytelling and create a place for genuine interaction. Based on this self-description, we are confident that Avatar’s nutritional cookbook is in good hands.

Avatar Nutrition Details Laid Out

As we know ATLA, takes place in a world of four nations: The Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads, which are based on Inuit, Chinese, Japanese, and Tibetan cultures respectively. Avatar’s worldbuilding takes influences from many places to build its narrative. The reason why it is not surprising we can see so many dishes along with the series.

In the case of the Inuit, they consume a diet consisting of foods that are fished, hunted, and gathered locally. This may include walrus, ringed seal, baleen seal, beluga whale, caribou, polar bear, ox, birds (including their eggs), and fish. While it is not possible to grow native plants for food in the Arctic, Inuit have traditionally gathered those that are naturally available. The people of the Water Tribe draw most of their food sources from the ocean. Meat generally plays an important role in many Water Tribe dishes.

The gastronomy of China is one of the richest due to the ancient culinary tradition of the country. In Chinese culture, every meal has to harmonize flavors, as well as to seek a balance between hot and cold, colors, and consistency of the various foods. This is why Chinese culinary techniques are numerous and particularly varied. People in the Earth Kingdom grow and eat a wide variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, and rice; meat and poultry from wild game and farms are also common

There are many opinions about what is fundamental to Japanese cuisine. Many think that sushi or the stylized elegant meals of formal kaiseki originated as part of the Japanese tea ceremony. In the show, the defining characteristic of Fire Nation cuisine is its spicy nature, and Fire Nation citizens are known to put spices into many of their delicacies and treats. The Fire Nation uses a wide variety of grains, meats, and vegetables in cooking. However, as Zuko said during the series it’s pretty similar to earth kingdom’s cuisine.

The cuisine of Tibet is characterized by the harsh environmental conditions that mark the high altitudes of Tibet (over 4500 meters above sea level), which makes the ingredients of their dishes have a high energy content, as well as abundant protein intake, including cereals, meats, and spices.

The most defining characteristic of air nomads’ cuisine was strict vegetarianism, and they were also known for their sweets, such as fruit pies and custard tarts. We could see during the show how their vegetarianism is troublesome for them when they are traveling around the world and not depending on their crops to feed on.

In The Legend of Korra we can take a look at Republic City’s commercially prepared foods, such as instant noodles and snack cakes, with the majority of its gourmet cuisine being imported from the other nations as a result from being a space for the four cultures to meet and transform.

We are excited to see avatar nutrition dishes come to reality in this book soon to be published. Let us know Which dish from Avatar: The Legend of Aang would you like to try? Which of the above is your favorite gastronomy? Is there a specific dish from the book that you intend to cook?

Lion Turtle (Avatar)Guide: What Happened To Them

In the Avatar franchise, it is revealed that the Lion turtle avatar was one of the most abundant species on earth, as seen in Avatar Wan’s time. By the time Aang is the current Avatar though, there is only one lion turtle avatar left. The big question? What happened to the lion turtle (Avatar) in the thousands of years that came between Wan and Aang?

The lion turtle avatar is one of Avatar: The Last Airbender’s most fascinating magical creatures. We can thank the mystery of its past for this. The show features many amazing and magical animals, also including air bison, winged lemurs, and dragons; and the lion turtle avatar, who shows up in the Avatar finale to help Aang is quite special.

Only one lion turtle avatar is present in Avatar: The Last Airbender. This is startling, as many existed thousands of years before the events of the series. So what happened to them? We’ll find out, but before then; let’s take a look at the history of the lion turtle.

History of the Lion Turtle Avatar

The lion turtle avatar is honorably referred to as the Ancient One by the spirits. It is the largest known animal in the world.

In the era of Raava, lion turtles populated the Spirit Wilds; where they served as protectors of mankind by housing human cities on their backs. As indicated by the symbols on their foreheads; each individual lion turtle showed an affinity for one of the four elements, and possessed the ability to grant individuals the power to control said element through energy bending.

When the era of the Avatar began; lion turtles relinquished their roles as protectors of mankind and started to roam the world. However, by 100 AG, the lion turtles had been hunted to near extinction save for one individual.

Lion Turtles In The Last Airbender and The Legend Of Korra

In The Legend of Korra, we encounter Wan, the first ever Avatar; and experience the early world of the Avatar universe. When Wan was alive, humans lived in cities on the backs of giant lion turtles; like the one who appears in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The lion turtles protected the humans and also provided them with the means to protect themselves: whenever humans had to venture into the spirit wilds beyond their cities; the lion turtles gave them the ability to bend one of the four elements through energy bending.

Different lion turtle cities gave different elements to their inhabitants. Wan’s original city was atop a lion turtle avatar who gave people the power to control fire. As Wan traveled the world, he encountered lion turtles who could bend air, water, and earth.

This proves that there were at least four lion turtle cities in the world, although it’s likely there could have been more. The exact amount of lion turtle cities is never specified. However, by the time Aang becomes Avatar, the lion turtles seem to have passed out of common knowledge.

The lion turtle who teaches Aang energy bending is the only one to appear in the series, meaning that something must have happened to the rest of the lion turtles.

What Happened To The Lion Turtle?

According to Nickelodeon, the lion turtles were hunted to near extinction during the ten thousand years between Wan’s time as the Avatar and The Legend of Korra. Even though they are the largest beings in the Avatar universe and possess the powers of the elements, lion turtles come across as fairly peaceful.

They are also isolationist, so it’s unlikely they fought back or banded together as they were being hunted. Just how the humans managed to kill these city-sized creatures with limited technology has not been clarified, but what is clear is that Aang’s lion turtle is the last one left. He disguised himself as a floating island and made sure to stay far away from any humans who may harm him.

Unfortunately, the lion turtles are not the only species hunted until they were nearly extinct features in Avatar. In season 3, episode 13, “The Firebending Masters,” viewers learn of the Fire Nation’s complicated past hunting dragons.

While Sozin was Fire Lord, he began the tradition of hunting dragons for sport – anyone who killed a dragon would earn the title of ‘Dragon’ themselves. Iroh claimed to have killed the last dragon, but in reality, he had lied to protect the last living dragons, Ran and Shaw. In Legend of Korra, Zuko flies on Ran and Shaw’s descendant, a dragon named Druk.

Despite being large and powerful beings, the lion turtles, like the dragons, were hunted almost to extinction. That is very much proof of humans’ capacity for cruelty throughout Avatar: The Last Airbender, reaffirming the need for an Avatar who can keep balance and protect the world. Still, it is good that Aang’s lion turtle survived for as long as he did, as he helped Aang when he was in need and deepened the lore of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

History of Long Feng in Avatar

Long Feng was born to a humble background and therefore has always craved power. In search of power, he went on the become the Grand Secretariat of Ba Sing Se. He also connived with the secret police of the city. And went on to become the head of Dai Li further cementing his power and position in the city. He handpicked the officers and recruited them to the Dai li. So that they can serve his ambitions and help him secretly rule the city.

History Of Dai Li

Dai Li was formed by the Avatar Kyoshi herself. She did so after a peasant uprising nearly disrupted the balance of the city. Avatar Kyoshi established the Dai Li to protect the cultural heritage of the city. And to prevent any further uprisings against the government of the Earth King.

She herself trained the members recruited for this elite police force. And put them through rigorous training regiments to turn them into the best of the best so that they can protect the cultural heritage of the city. But over time the Dai Li became so corrupt that they did not even recognize the Earth King as their head but served Long Feng and Azula afterward because it was more profitable.

She expressed her disappointment to Avatar during their interaction at the actions of the Dai Li. And told Aang that if she knew that the Dai Li would become so corrupt and immoral over the years, she would not have established this police unit at Ba Sing Se.

Long Feng’s Seizure Of Power

When refugees from all around the Avatar Universe started to come to Ba Sing Se for refuge, Long Feng used this opportunity to become the sole head of the city relating to the external affairs and the security of the city.

He chose to hide this information from the King and for the most part of his life Eath, King Kuei did not even know that there was a war going on outside the walls of the city. Long Feng claimed that he withheld all this information from the king because he did not want to trouble the Earth King.

But in reality, he did so because he wanted to control all the affairs of the state himself. He passed laws that he saw fit and used Dai Li to thwart any resistance from the masses. His network was so deep and organized that even the Council Of Five, could not even reach the King. He also used his capabilities of Brainwashing people into working for him.

Interaction Of Long Feng With The Avatar

After Appa was kidnapped by the Sandbenders, Aang and the rest of the team were led on to believe that Appa might be in Ba Sing Se. So the Team Avatar went to the city and when they immediately faced the threat of Azula trying to conquer the city with the help of a Tunnel boring Tank.

The team foiled the Fire Nation’s attempt to conquer the city and entered the city by introducing himself as The Avatar. Long Feng immediately put the Team under surveillance and also put a brainwashed agent with them. The agent was under the guise of their guide to the city.

The gang finally went to a party to meet the king but were confronted by Long Feng himself. When Aang showed his desire to meet the king, Long Feng blackmailed him by saying that ” If he wants his bison to survive then he will stop trying to meet the king”. At the mention of Appa, Aang stopped trying to meet the Earth King.

Later Long Feng captured Appa by using a bison whistle and showed his ability to Earthbend by capturing Appa by himself by turning over a complete slab of Earth. Appa was later freed by Zuko and then went on to save the Team Avatar at Lake Laogai when they were surrounded by Dai Li agents.

Abilities of Long Feng

Long Feng is one of the most powerful Earthbenders in the Avatar universe. But he avoids direct confrontation with his enemies and uses hypnosis to control others. He is a very powerful hypnotist and uses hypnosis to control whoever does not obey him. He also has several agents under his hypnotic control that survey the city and report any suspicious activity against Long Feng and Dai Li.

Long Feng uses the words “The Earth King has invited you to Lake Laogai” to put a spell on the person whom he wants to control. He also had his headquarters established under the Lake Laogai. And also locked up Appa beneath the Lake after capturing him.

Uncovering Of Long Feng To The King

After Appa was found by the Team Avatar. The team attacked the Earth King’s Palace and met the king to reveal Long Feng’s illegal and treasonous activities. After the king was presented with enough evidence of the war and Long Feng’s misuse of his power. The King ordered the Council of Five to arrest Long Feng. But the Dai Li still remained loyal to Long Feng because of their corruption.

Long Feng placed Dai Li under Princess Azula’s command to take over the city by placing the King and the Council of Five under house arrest simultaneously. But when Long Feng was freed and asked to be made the King Azula sat at the throne and asking him to submit as he knows what is best for him.

Long Feng ultimately gave into Azula’s demand and became another one of her subjects by bowing down to her. And Lost all his power and position to Azula.

King Bumi
Earth

Why King Bumi Is Such an Important Character in Avatar

Avatar: The Last Airbender brought us a colorful cast of characters that would stick around for a while. Many of the main characters were aged around where the target audience would expect, but there were also a collection of important elderly people there. King Bumi is one character who really drove the plot forward in the show.

While everyone knows how amazing Uncle Iroh was, there is one reoccurring geriatric character who feels somewhat underrated. King Bumi is one of the most important characters in the entire universe – yet, he doesn’t get a lot of screen time.

Here’s why the show wouldn’t be the same without Bumi.

1. Aang’s Only Remaining Friend

Although the show kind of dances around the topic, in the beginning, Aang’s existence is depressing. After freaking out over the immense responsibility he has, he finds himself frozen into a block of ice and wakes up a century later. What feels like hours ago to him is a hundred years – and a lot has happened.

He has the whole war to deal with, and the fact that the entire world as he knew it changed. Despite the impressive longevity of some characters on the show, how many of your friends would you expect to still be alive if you found yourself blasted a century into the future? Worse yet, what if you found out that your existence and disappearance led to the death of your entire nation? It’s a lot for a 12-year-old to process.

He spends a lot of time talking about how things used to be during his travels and are often surprised to see that certain landmarks or cities aren’t what they used to be after falling victim to the fire nation. The world and the people in it are unrecognizable.

Aang is relieved when he gets to Omashu and finds the delivery system is his childhood friend introduced him to was still active. He was able to go around and play on them until he found the crazy king, who turned out to be his best friend. He offered excellent guidance and was the only familiar (human) face he had going for him.

It’s a complicated experience on both ends, but it is certainly a moment where Aang could feel grounded and connected to a world he hardly understood anymore. It was a great moment when they enthusiastically went down the shute together.

2. His (actually insightful) Trials

Of course, Bumi didn’t come out and say that he was his old friend; instead, he made him go through some trials. Fetching a lunchbox key, retrieving a pet, battling an opponent, and ultimately guessing his name. The entire thing seemed a little maddening – until you realize the message he was trying to teach. Things aren’t always what they seemed. This is also the first real instance where we see Aang forced to go on offense.

As an air nomad, he was preached about pacifism and talking things out. He has more of a dodgy approach than outward offense – even when enemies are blatantly trying to kill him. While Bumi certainly went pretty hard during their attack, he did hold back considerably. He egged Aang on and tried his best to show he needs to get offensive and not always act like an air-nomad.

Even in the end, where Aang tries to demonstrate that he won and Bumi gave him the win, we see the rock hovering over them and realized Bumi could have kept going – but he didn’t. Although it was never outwardly said, upon revisiting the episode, it was like he was trying to give Aang a taste of the battles that would ensue in a somewhat safe environment.

3. He’s a Mad Genius

Most of the lessons he tried to teach came off a bit crazy at times – but his eccentricity was fueled by his intelligent, out-of-the-box thinking. He is an amazing component in so many ways, and there is a reason he makes such a formidable opponent. It wasn’t just the trials where we got a taste of his ability to think things out – but also when the gang revisited when the fire nation managed to take control.

4. Arguably the Strongest Earthbender

Aside from being intelligent – he is ripped. Creators said they kind of wanted to give him that EVA (from Evangelion) appearance and they succeeded. Aside from being physically strong, his bending skills were on a whole other level. Even Toph commented how he was the strongest earthbender. Any time where it seemed like he was concerned or under someone else control, he was simply waiting. He knew when to strike.

5. Led Them to Toph

His strength was revealed when the gang freed him only to discover he could break out the whole time. He wanted to stay and knew where his destiny was. When Aang begged him to be his earthbending teacher, he declined and prophesized he needed someone oddly-specifically sounding like Toph.

Sure enough, on the journey to go find her (which wouldn’t have happened without his rejection), they found her. So much came from having Toph on the journey. The dynamics were great, she was freed, and she ultimately founded metal-bending, which might not have happened if she didn’t leave her home and join the avatar crew.

6. Loyal to His City

It would have been easy for him to just walk away and help – but he didn’t. His loyalties were always to his cities. While Aang and crew were forced to make some tough decisions and abandon bad situations for the sake of their destiny, Bumi knew where his destiny was – and he stuck through with it until the bitter end. When the time was right, he took back his city.

7. White Lotus Member

It was also revealed that he was a senior member of the White Lotus. The society of powerful, elderly fighters was a crucial part of bringing the war to an end. It even included another favorite elder – General Iroh. When you think about their personalities, it’s no surprise that they would get along.

8. He’s Hilarious

This is because, despite everything, Bumi is funny. He has that awkward kind of dad humor that you love to hate. He was known for making many bad puns or stupid jokes throughout his appearances. Even his name is allegedly a pun, deriving from the Sanskrit word for earth.

9. The Patience

Although he was comic relief, he was far from impulsive. Much of his strategy relied on the “slow burn” approach. This meant things like not telling Aang who he was immediately and rushing into the arms of his old (missing) friend, who was allegedly killed. It also meant not breaking free because of the convenience.

He waited out until the solar eclipse for his moment to take back the city he swore to protect – and he did. While he has a comedic appearance – let’s also not forget the atrocities of spending literal months inside those metal cages and pretending to be helpless. He was a true character of honor that gave up a lot despite most of it being offscreen.

10. His Legacy

While he never seemed to have any kids of his own, he did leave behind a bit of a legacy. Aang and Katara’s first son was named Bumi to commemorate him. It was a really sweet gesture to him, considering the importance that the character had to Aang during the show.

Unfortunately, we don’t know too much about what happened to him after. It was easy for fans to assume 112-year old King Bumi was not going to survive a shot taking place decades later. Still, it was nice to see his legacy carry on in a funny, smart, and eccentric character.

Do you think Bumi is underrated, or do you think there are other avatar characters that deserve a little love? We want to hear from you! Let us know in the comments below!

Aang And Katara Kiss Guide In Avatar: The Last Airbender

The moment where Aang and Katara kiss for the first time was one of the most awaited moments in Avatar: The Last Airbender (TV Series). Since the beginning of the TV series when Aang was discovered by Katara and Sokka, Aang felt attracted to Katara. When Aang woke up after a hundred years, the first person he saw was Katara. And he immediately wanted to do penguin sledding with her immediately.

Even when Aang offered Katar and Sokka a lift to their home on Appa. Aang was looking and smiling at Katara. To which Katara asked that why was Aang smiling at her. Aang was embarrassed at the question and replied with a question ” Was I smiling?”.

When Zuko came and attacked Katara and her tribe Aang presented himself for capture to protect her and her tribe. It was obvious that Aang liked Katara from the moment he first laid eyes on her. But Aang never had the courage to tell Katara about his feeling of love towards her. In this section, we will list the moments where Aang and Katara kiss in Avatar: The Last Airbender (TV Series). There were quite a few moments in the TV Series where both of the lead characters become intimate with each other. All of these moments came with their particular feelings that we will cover in this article as well.

History Of Aang and Katara

Before covering the moments where Aang and Katara kiss let’s dive into the development of their relationship over the course of the TV Series. Aang and Kataradeveloped a special bond right at the moment when they first met. With Katara instantly trusting Aang where Sokka still remained skeptical and thought of him as an agent of the Fire Nation.

When the group is traveling towards the Eastern Air Temple for the first time after Aang wakes up. He initially did not believe Sokka and Katara about the genocide of the Air Nomads. And told the group that the Nomads can not die as the Sky Bison is the only way to reach the Air Temples. And nobody except the Nomads has a Flying Bison. The reason behind this huge burden of grief was that Aang blamed himself for the killings of the Air Nomads. Because it was his responsibility to protect the people of the four nations and maintain the balance between them. He became so distraught at the loss of his family that he unwillingly entered the Avatar State. But he was comforted by Katara who told him that she and Sokka are now his family. And comforted him back to his original state.

At the season finale of the first book, Aang entered into the spirit world, and Katara stood guard to protect his body. But his body was kidnapped by Zoku despite Katara’s efforts to protect the body. When Aang finally returns after defeating Commander Zhao and his forces, Katara and Aang share a long and intimate hug.

1. Cave Of The Two Lovers

While traveling across the Earth Kingdom, Aang and Katara get trapped inside the Cave Of Two Lovers. The only way to get out of this was to trust love. They came across the tombs of Oma and Shu, the two lovers who would secretly meet in the cave. In their tomb, there were statues of them kissing with the inscription “Love Is Brightest In The Dark.” On this Katara suggested that they both kiss like Oma and Shu as it seems the only way to get out of the cave.

They kissed right when their torch is about to go off. Although, the viewers are not shown the kiss of Aang and Katara because it is implied that they kissed after the torch went off. After the kiss the cave was illuminated with shining crystals. The blushed after kissing for the first time ever and got out of the cave on the way illuminated by the crystals.

Before Aang Left To Meet Guru Pathik

After liberating Ba Sing Se from the control of Long Feng, the group separated for a short while with Toph leaving to meet her parents, and Katara staying in Ba Sing Se to plan for the attack on Fire Nation capital during the upcoming eclipse.

Aang received a letter from Guru Pathik of Eastern Air Temple stating that he can help the Aang take control of his Avatar state. Aang receives a kiss on the cheek from Katara as a sign of goodbye leaving The Avatar blushing.

But was woken up by Katara herself, who ended up comforting Aang which allowed The Avatar to go to sleep before his day of the fight.

The Day Of The Invasion

On the day of the eclipse, Aang kissed Katara before the invasion. As he feared that he might not return after the invasion. Katara returned the kiss back and Aang and Katara went on to perform their respective roles in the invasion. But the invasion was failed and the two did not talk about their feelings afterward.

Ember Island

When the Team Avatar was at Ember Island, they went on to see a play based on them. In the play, Aang was portrayed as Katara’s little brother. This made Aang uncomfortable and he left the theatre. Katara found him but Aang started to discuss the feelings but Katara said that she is confused right now. To which Aang kissed her again causing her to yell at him and leave. Zuko’s Age In Avatar The Last Airbender

In The Last Airbender, we meet the young prince as disgraced royalty in Book 1. As at this first appearance, Zuko’s age stands at around 16 years old. He was scarred by his father and banished from the Fire Nation three years before; putting Zuko’s age at the start of his journey at 13.

Since Aang’s journey to becoming a fully-fledged Avatar concludes about a year later, Zuko’s age would have been around 17 at the end of the 100 Year War. This is also when he becomes the new Firelord and when the follow-up comics take place. These graphic novels continue over the course of a few years.

70 years later, during the events of The Legend of Korra, Zuko is now retired, having passed the title of Firelord to his daughter Izumi. He first appears in the third season one year later, where it’s clear that Zuko’s old age has yet to affect his fighting capabilities.

Finally, Zuko is last seen accompanying Izumi to the coronation of Prince Wu three years later. This makes Zuko’s age roughly 91 at the end of the franchise. Zuko’s age would also make him the oldest living character from the original series.

The 70 Year Gap: What Were The Contributions In Zuko’s Age As The Firelord In The Last 7 Decades

After Firelord Ozai’s defeat, Zuko aids Aang and friends in transforming Fire Nation colonies that occupy territory across the Earth Kingdom into cities where benders and non-benders of all nations could live in peace. These areas later become the United Republic of Nations and eventually lead to the creation of Republic City.

Sometime later when Zuko’s age places him between 18 and 19 years old, he searches for his mother, Ursa; who fled from her family after being banished by Ozai several years prior. Upon finding her, he learns she has changed her name and face, and she was happily married. Following this, Zuko spends time getting to know his mother, before returning to his role as the Firelord.

Decades later, he helps imprison Zaheer and other members of The Red Lotus that attempted to kidnap an infant Korra. Where Avatar’s Order of the White Lotus pursued philosophy, beauty and truth, The Red Lotus are bent on ushering in a new world order through chaos, which includes the planned assassination of world leaders and the Avatar, as well as the release of the dark spirit Vaatu.

The Legend Of Korra: Zuko’s Role

It’s not until Zaheer breaks free from prison in Season 3 that Zuko returns to confront him. After attempts to stop the villain from freeing his allies fail, he informs Korra and company of the situation before retreating to the Fire Nation to protect his daughter.

Following the defeat of Zaheer, Zuko travels to Republic City to pay his respects to an injured Korra. Three years later he accompanies Izumi to the coronation of the Earth Kingdom’s Prince Wu, where he witnesses the Earthbender Kuvira usurp the prince and declare herself the leader of the newly renamed Earth Empire.

While Zuko’s presence in The Legend of Korra is short-lived, his return plays a vital role in Korra’s survival and adds to the sequel series’ rich collection of characters. Through his exploits before and after meeting Aang in the original series, it’s clear the old Firebender has led a long and exciting life as we round up the show with Zuko’s age being about 91 years.

Zuko’s age at every single turn is a clear reminder that you are never too young to change the world. As we see in The Legend of Korra, his age also points out that you are never too old either.
