Aang and Appa: Things You Didn’t Know About The Bison

Pets are valuable companions; in the sense that they provide companionship that is often impossible to rival. They stick around like glue – and they seem to know just what to do to help make things all better. For Aang and Appa, this relationship was next to brotherhood. Appa went everywhere that Aang went, and they were almost inseparable.

Even when fate had them far from each other, they were both in such a terrible state that they could not function without one another. That’s a true relationship right there.

Aang is obviously the more popular member of this dynamic duo, but that doesn’t diminish Appa’s importance. However, not many people know much about the sky bison – which is understandable, as most people would focus on Aang’s story more than Appa.

More to Appa than meets the eye, more than him being the last remaining Sky Bison in the world; or one of the cuddliest characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender. He is the literal definition of a gentle giant, but don’t be fooled, as he can be quite aggressive and quick to anger if he perceives the slightest of threats aimed at his loved ones.

Everything about Appa is expectedly adorable, but many facts about him are not as known as they should be. So let’s take them one by one.

Aang and Appa: The Sky Bison Chose Aang, Not The Other Way Around

When you set out to get a pet, you are the one making the active choice to take one particular animal home. That is how it’s always seemed to be. However, with Aang and Appa, the story all but turns on its head.

Aang becomes an Airbending Master at the tender age of 12, after which he gets his tattoos. This sets a new world record, one that his granddaughter only breaks, Jinora, many years later. Airbending tradition states that the tattoo ceremony includes the bender bonding with a spirit animal. In this case, it is specifically one of the many Sky Bison that populate the regions around the Air Temples.

When Aang sets out to pick his companion, he meets several different calves to choose from. He is, however, aware that he must consider the Sky Bison’s preferences and respect that decision, as opposed to picking the Sky Bison he wanted the most. Once Appa accepts the gift of fruit, Aang and Appa create their bond, and their friendship is set for the rest of their lives, even into the afterlife.

Appa Was Meant To Be A Dog Instead

Aang and Appa would have had a much different dynamic had the showrunners continued with the animal designs they had for Appa in the beginning. Interestingly, Appa wasn’t always a big fluffy Sky Bison at the start of the show’s production. Instead, he was a canine-inspired creature, definitely not as big as Appa; but still big enough to carry Aang around.

It’s interesting to imagine just how the series would have gone had the creators decided to stick to the initial design. Surely, it would have been harder for Team Avatar to travel around the world with the ease that Appa had. It would have also impacted the relationship between Aang and Appa greatly.

However, it all worked out well; the decision to alter Appa into the lovable big ball of fur we know now, and we did eventually get to see the design of the first animal companion. The design was converted into Avatar Korra’s polar bear dog, Naga.

Aang and Appa: The Sky Bison Underwent A Lot Of Stylistic Changes

The animals in the world of the Last Airbender were conceived as combinations between two original animals. These hybrids would eventually become the norm in the series and spinoffs and tie-in comics. This was no different for the animal half in the relationship between Aang and Appa.

Appa, and the rest of his species, was originally conceived as a combination of a bison and a manatee or a sea cow. This is in line with the pattern of strange hybrids that appear in the show. Examples include pairings that produced Rooster Pigs, Ostrich Horses, Hippo Cows, and even Lion turtles.

Interestingly, the earlier designs for Appa show that he was more sea cow than bison, which was eventually changed to what we have in the series. Appa was also supposed to have helical horns. But it would have been difficult to create that, considering the animation style used in the show.

The creators decided to opt for simpler horns instead. We can say their decisions definitely paid off, as fans all over the world fell in love with Appa’s design. Plus, Aang and Appa might have had a weird dynamic with the previous depictions – so it’s a good idea they didn’t go with all that.

Appa Weighs About 10 Tons

Obviously, Appa is a pretty big guy, but what exactly is his weight in numbers?

Team Avatar has given us the answer to this on several occasions. It’s been stated that Appa being around was a gift from heaven, even when his weight just served about the same purpose as a battering ram.  He’s one ginormous animal companion, with his size coming in at least 10 feet in height at the shoulder, which is an unconfirmed number but can be deduced from his stance with humans beside him.

In their lengthy time as Aang and Appa, along with observations from the rest of the team, particularly Sokka, the sky bison’s weight has been put at around 20,000 pounds – at least 10 tons. Of course, they didn’t have the means to measure Appa but judging from the bison’s size; you could argue that they are not far off with their estimation.

His size has come in handy, helping them fight or in extremely tight conditions with dangerous weather.

Aang and Appa Don’t Always Agree

Even the best of friends aren’t always on the same page, so considering Aang and Appa are more or less family, that’s not a surprising fact at all. It is not hard to believe. However, the specifics where this applies can be a little comedic.

As much as Appa loves Aang, he doesn’t always answer his master’s calls. Instead, Appa answers a very special sky bison whistle, much like a dog whistle, which Aang uses whenever he needs him. But the whole whistle situation is somewhat humorous.

When Aang purchases a bison whistle on one of their stopovers, the Gaang mocks him for wasting their money. Katara demands that she be allowed to control their finances from that point on.

The whistle looks like a sham largely because when Aang blows it for the first time, Appa doesn’t come as he is supposed to. As it appears, the whistle either does not work, or Appa hears it and refuses to answer because he is sleeping. If anything is clear, it’s the fact that Appa likes his sleep. A LOT. We won’t put it past him if he decides not to answer. Sleep is important, after all.

Appa Understands Human Speech And Gestures

Appa expresses himself in grunts and bellows, and it looks like Aang is the only person who has any idea what is being communicated. Nonetheless, the Avatar has a penchant for making up random stories, so he might simply be playing a prank on his friends.

On the other hand, it’s definitive that Appa can understand what the others are saying, seeing as he accurately responds to Aang’s instructions— like when he asks him to pretend to be tired so that he could stay on Kyoshi Island long enough to ride the Elephant Koi. More importantly, Appa and Momo have developed a language system that is decipherable only amongst themselves.

Aang and Appa Differ In Their Meal Choices

For the most part, Appa behaves exactly like one of the cow family. He prefers to eat plants, hay, fruits, leaves, grass. In fact, a large fraction of his diet is vegetarian, but this still does not make him herbivorous, regardless of his bovine dentition or the arrangement of teeth in the mouth.

When necessary, for instance, during the episode “Appa’s Lost Days,” he tries to eat an egg because he had been starving for quite some time.  This proves that he’s obviously an omnivore if he can take in animal meat in any form.

Appa Is Smarter Than Most Humans

Appa is extremely mild-mannered (except when he perceives a threat to Aang or the others), which means that it is surprisingly easy to befriend the gentle creature. One example of this is his instant love for Sokka, which the latter would appreciate more if he didn’t get drenched in Sky Bison saliva so often.

In addition, Appa possesses at least some smarts, which is shown by how quickly and accurately he responds to specific instructions. As a result, a lot of the humans in the show could probably learn something from him.

Aang and Appa Die Together

As sad as it sounds, the connection between an Airbender and their Sky Bison is permanent, implying that it can only be broken through death. So when Aang dies, around 53 years after the end of the Hundred Year War, it is believed that Appa goes with him.

Another reason for this outcome is that both of them had spent a century in icy hibernation, which may have had a drastic impact on their respective lifespans. On a different note: What happened to Momo?

He Is Not The Last Sky Bison In Existence

The Last Airbender is paired with the only remaining member of the Sky Bison, or so it seems in the beginning. Aang suspects that the gentle animals were eradicated along with the rest of the Air Nomads during the Fire Nation raids, a belief that holds for quite some time.

In The Legend of Korra, there are considerably more Sky Bison flying around, and none of them are descended from Appa. Apparently, Aang “discovers” that many of them had survived the Hundred Year War in hiding. They only emerged when the world became more peaceful.

Best Sokka Quotes From One Of The Funniest Characters

As we’ve come to note, Sokka is the comic relief among the characters in the Last Airbender series. His sense of humor is one of the few things that kept us going when the journey got dark and gloomy. His sense of humor isn’t always appreciated by his friends, but it’s appreciated by the audience. Also, the fact that he is also the non-bender who has his way around maps and schedules is also another reason why Sokka has a lot of quotes we need to examine. Let us take a look at some of the best Sokka quotes

The Best Sokka Quotes

“You just love taking me out of my comfort zone, don’t you? “

This is one of the very first of the sassy remarks that Sokka made. This was made to Katara in the icy southern seas when they went fishing together.

It’s very obvious that the two siblings love each other but the writers of this show do very well to properly depict their sibling fights and bickering. Katara is the one who wants to go on this adventure with the Avatar. Sokka, not so much initially.

Katara, despite all the portrayal as being practical, is definitely the one who pushes Sokka outside of what he’s comfortable with. And in his defense, he’s not exactly comfortable with a lot of things. Sure, he says this to tease her at the start of the series, but it’s pretty much a premonition as he himself would come to figure out.

“Good inside him isn’t good enough. Why don’t you come back when it’s outside of him too?”

Sokka says this to Uncle Iroh as he pleads with team Avatar to be more accommodating of his nephew and says that he knows there’s good inside of him. Sokka retorts with this remark as Zuko at this point had done nothing but chase them all over the globe. Sokka, unconvinced that Zuko has any good in him despite Uncle Iroh’s plea.
Zuko would eventually redeem himself and join the team.

“This is the kind of wacky, time-wasting nonsense I’ve been missing.”

This statement was made after Zuko had joined them. He saw a poster that said a play about the boy in the iceberg was going to be made. This was going to be by the Ember Island Players. Zuko, frustrated, said that his mother used to take them to see the plays all the time and remarked that they were bad. Sokka, dismissing not going stated that this was the type of time-wasting nonsense he had been missing.

“My first girlfriend turned into the moon.”

This is a statement he made when he and Zuko were in a hot air balloon, in the boiling rock episode. He explained to Zuko that his first girlfriend turned into the moon. Zuko in turn pats him and tells him that this is rough. Come to think of it, this is not news to Zuko. He was there, trying to redeem his honor and whatnot.

“Look, I hate to be the wet blanket here, but since Katara’s busy, I guess it’s up to me.”

This is a slide sarcastic remark he made that stated indirectly that Katara is the wet blanket in their group of three. Sokka knows where he stands in his group of friends and he knows that he’s not really the one in charge. More often than not, it’s Katara calling the shots as the more responsible adult.

More of The Best Sokka Quotes

“I knew it was only a matter of time. Appa ate Momo.”
What’s funny about this quote is the exaggeration in it. This line is an example that Sokka jumps to the most ridiculous of conclusions through the weirdest of ways. Plenty of members of their party have gone missing in the past and it’s never been suggested that Appa would eat one of them. The expression he had at that point also made it a memorable quote.

“You know, it was really unclear.”

This is a reference to the part in which Jet supposedly died in the play that was performed by Ember Island Players. The scene where Long Fei bent a boulder at him and said he had chosen his own demise. The scene was recreated and in an attempt to figure out what happened, Toph asks if Jet just died. He replied, saying it was really unclear.

“It’s the quenchiest.”

This is one of the funniest versions of Sokka. It feels like Sokka on an extra funny drug. This was after Appa had been kidnapped by the sand benders. The team had to walk out of the desert on foot. Sokka, getting a hold of some cactus juice gets a sip that makes him lose his senses and act funny. He makes this statement, encouraging everyone else to have a sip of cactus juice.

“I’m just a guy with a boomerang. I didn’t ask for all this flying and magic.”

Soon after Sokka and Katara fly on Appa to go save Aang from the fire nation, they are able to crash the ship. Katara, trying to attack some soldiers mistakenly freezes Sokka. He starts using his boomerang to try and break the frozen ice. He makes the statement of not asking for any of the flying and magic. He says he is just a boomerang guy.

“I’m sorry master, you’re wrong. I am not worthy. I am not who you think I am … I lied so that I could learn Swordsmanship from you…”

In this episode, Sokka spends the entire episode, learning the ways of the sword. Sokka, disguising as a Fire Nation colony member tries to learn but It’s a bold lie. Sokka is however too honorable to keep it up. Of course, it turns out Sokka’s teacher knows all along who he is. Sokka’s confession helps to prove that Sokka is worthy of the position he’s in. Not only does he get a pretty sweet sword made from “space rock,” but he also starts to understand his value to the group. They need him as much as he needs them.

Painted Lady: Avatar The Last Airbender

The Painted Lady is an episode that showcased just how effective team Avatar was all through their journey in the Earth Kingdom. They made it a point of contact, either knowingly or unknowingly, to leave some lasting effect and create some change wherever they went. It was a natural impulse for good in a way.

Who is the Painted Lady?

The Painted Lady is a benevolent spirit of the Jang Hui River. She is recognized and fabled for her protective abilities and healing abilities as well. She once acted as the guardian of the Jang Hui village but was driven away after a couple of hundred years. This was when the Fire Nation invaded and occupied the village.

The soot from their factory contaminated the village, and the Painted Lady ceased to guard the village. Some fans have seriously debated this, pointing that the villagers needed her the most at the time.

The Painted Lady chooses who she reveals herself to and saves from that; only the spiritually enlightened and inclined can see her form. The Painted Lady

History of the Painted Lady

The Painted Lady in Avatar lore was originally a human being. She lived before the 3rd century BG. She was a person that had a strong spiritual affinity. She had a close relationship with nature and maintained a strong connection to the spirits. As a result of this affinity for spiritual things, she transcended into the Spirit World after her death.

After becoming a spirit, the Painted Lady began to watch over the river town of Jang Hui until the Fire Nation Army built a factory on the corresponding river in 90 AG. At this point, the fire nation factory began polluting the river by discharging its waste into it. The pollution drove the Painted Lady away, leaving the villagers to fend for themselves.

Several years later, as the villagers tell Aang and his friends, the fish and oceanic wildlife ceased to exist soon after the factory came into functionality. So when the Avatar and his friends arrived at the village, the village was already a wretched place to live as their livelihood hung in the balance.

The town of Jang Hui is a fishing village, and this factory hindered that to the maximum. The village had soon become deprived of survival and devastated by illnesses caused by the pollutants in its waters. This pollution came from the factory, and it became clear that their only problem was the factory.

Through intense persuasion from Katara, who impersonated the Painted Lady for several days, Team Avatar assisted the villagers in cleaning up the river. Finally, one night by the side of the river, Katara found herself in the presence of the real Painted Lady, who thanked her for her part in cleaning the Jang Hui River.

Team Avatar Arriving at Jang Hui Village

When the team came to the fishing village, they were surprised at what they found. The village was suffering greatly, and Katara, unable to look away from their suffering, decided to dress up as the Painted Lady to help them.

If they wanted to get help from anyone, she felt they would rather it be their precious deity, the Painted Lady, than some colonial girl. At this point, Sokka had already created a strategic schedule and routine for them to follow if they were to meet up with the mini invasion they were planning.

When they got back into town the next day, it was significantly livelier. The villagers, Xu being their representative, informed them that they had a prestigious visit from the Painted Lady the night before. Sokka, immediately concluding that the villagers were in good hands, asked for a fish and instantly said they were on their way.

He eventually suggests that if the Painted Lady wanted to help the village, she would blow up the factory. But, after Aang found her out, she persuaded him to help rid the town of the factory forever.

They eventually all get caught up and know that Katara was the Painted Lady. The fire nation, refusing to sit by as their factory was destroyed, decides to attack the village. With the help of team Avatar, they drive back the fire bending attack and join hands with the villagers to clean the river.

The Painted Lady manifests herself to Katara as she goes for a drink in the river later that night, offering a single sentence.

“Thank you.”

Mark Hamill is Avatar's Bad Guy As Fire Lord Ozai
Fire

Mark Hamill in Avatar as As Fire Lord Ozai

Mark Richard Hamill was born in Oakland, California, on September 25, 1951. He is an American film, television, voice actor, director, producer, and writer. He is best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars film series, winning three Saturn Awards. In addition, he is a prolific voice actor who has played characters in a lot of animated television series, movies, and video games, including the antagonist in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

To be a voice actor, you must know how to convey emotions, have a certain sensitivity, the ability to change acting register, a sense of meter, and a good memory. These are the essential characteristics of a voice actor, and Mark Hamill knew how to use all these features to take his spot as a very recognized voice actor.

Mark Hamill in Avatar Was Amazing

Let’s put in perspective, for a moment, an actor playing a character during all the chapters of a series. Don’t you think it is difficult to imitate a character with your voice while the character remains credible throughout his appearances?

As you can see, in these cases, the level of professionalism and difficulty is quite high. That’s why actors like Mark Hamill achieve this only in movies where their characters don’t have so many dialogues but also in long series where the character recites dialogues constantly.

Having just a nice voice is not synonymous with being a good voice actor; having a good tool and not knowing how to use it is like having a good voice and being a bad interpreter. That is why it is important to develop the interpretation: an interpretation that is believable to the ear that accompanies the story, the movement, and the character’s psychology.

Mark Hamill has been able to bring to life diverse characters that have something in common; most of them, for some reason, are villains.

Avatar: The Last Airbender and all of its fanfare cannot be talked about without considering the complex villains that the franchise showed to viewers. Not many villains are generally accepted by fans; especially as most of them are just evil with no character development whatsoever.

But with ATLA, the villains were grounded in a simple reality; one that fans could relate to. It ultimately made the show one of the best-written series of all time. One of the most widely accepted villains in the series is Mark Hamill Ozai.

We can all remember Mark Hamill for quite a number of roles; particularly the one as the savior of the galaxy when he was Luke Skywalker. Fans of the Star Wars franchise will remember that Darth Vader may have wanted to turn Luke to the Dark Side. While it did not happen in the Return of The Jedi; we got to see what could have been with Mark Hamill Ozai. That’s not the only time Hamill has been a villain, however; as he has donned the cloak of evil quite a number of times after.

The number of times he has been a baddie is quite surprising; seeing as he was such a force for good as the ever-positive Luke Skywalker. Maybe his turn at evil was a bid to balance the world. That’s not important though. What IS important is this list of times where Mark Hamill Ozai where he turned to the Dark Side.

Mark Hamill Ozai Voiced The Joker In Batman: The Animated Series, and the DC Animated Universe

For decades, DC’s attempt at animating its characters has been filled with much acceptance and fanfare. The Batman: Animated series was definitely one of the highlights of this project; with intricate storylines and well-rounded characters.

But one of the most important parts that fans loved was the depiction of the Joker; not just in Batman the animated series, but also in the DC Animated Universe movies. This success can be attributed to none other than Mark Hamill Ozai; who brought the Joker to life through stellar voice acting.

And really, who can forget that freaky laugh of the Joker on Batman: The Animated Series?. His way of delivering tense dialogue was in perfect contrast to whatever atrocities he was committing on screen. This helped to accentuate the already psychotic demeanor associated with the character.

Mark Hamill Ozai’s turn as the Joker is perhaps the most memorable of the animated Jokers; so much that he played the role for over 10 years. He even went on to menace the Justice League as the Joker in the animated series of the same name (set in the same universe), taking them all on with his Royal Flush Gang.

So good was his depiction, that many members of the fanbase have compared his voice acting; to the perfect real-life portrayals of other actors – even though much of it was off-screen.

He Played The Trickster In Both The 1990 & 2014 series of DC’s The Flash

Any serious fan would be either familiar with the original 1990 series for the Flash; or the CW’s superhero drama The Flash that has aired since 2014. While decades apart, both shows have had several connections, from plotlines to actors. One of the latter is Mark Hamill Ozai, who portrayed the Trickster in the 1990 series and reprised his role in the 2014 series.

In playing another DC villain, the Trickster; Mark Hamill Ozai is a sort of Joker; just in a watered-down form. You could say he was rehashing the role; but where other actors would have just been putting a shift at work, for Hamill it is serious.

That’s why it is so cool that he was able to play the two different live-action versions of the same villain — battling The Flash in 1990, and in the modern-day series. Not many actors can lay claim to playing the same character in two different TV series, and still body it like Mark Hamill Ozai

Mark Hamill Ozai Was Also Darth Bane In Star Wars: The Clone Wars

You could say Luke Skywalker never heeded his father’s calling and turned to the Dark Side; but it would be inaccurate to say that Mark Hamill Ozai did not dine with the forces of evil in the Star Wars franchise. He actually did, in his portrayal of the evil Sith Lord, Darth Bane in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

In this role, we finally get to see Mark Hamill Ozai literally voice the Dark Side. The Clone Wars animated series involves a plot with the ghost of Darth Bane. If that name does not ring any bells; well, he is the Sith Lord who mandated that there can only ever be two Sith Lords in existence.

Prior to his ruling, there could be more than two Sith Lords roaming around the galaxy, and his rule came to be known as the Rule of Two. Wherever evil Sith Lord souls go, Darth Vader would have been happy to know that his son by proxy did turn to the Dark Side; even if it happened technically in a galaxy and at a time long ago.

Mark Hamill in Avatar and Some Other Roles Played

  • Alvin the Treacherous (DreamWorks Dragons): Spending the first season wanting to displace Stoick, this Viking was finally able to make peace with the commune, learning to control dragons in the process.
  • The Malevolent Entity (Adventure Time): Mark Hamill did several voices in the show, though possibly the most memorable is that of the malevolent entity who wants Finn to kill a friendly ant in the episode The Enchiridion!
  • Stickybeard (Codename: Kids Next Door): Candy pirates were a regular problem for The Neighborhood Kids, more so with a leader as hungry as Stickybeard.
  • Von Nebula (LEGO Hero Factory): Let’s just say this show isn’t very entertaining, but Mark Hamill shows he is made for making priceless baddies, adding Von Nebula to his long track record.
  • Ricochet Rabbit (Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law): Ricochet was, after all, a pretty destructive character. Attorney Harvey tried to defend him, but chaos was inevitable.
  • Arnim Zola and more (Ultimate Spider-Man): Lots and lots of celebrities participate in this show, so Mark Hamill couldn’t miss it, playing villains ranging from Zola to Nightmare, and characters like the dragon Shou-Lao.
  • Darth Bane (The Clone Wars): An evil spirit from times of yore, Bane makes his appearance in the show as a vision of Yoda on the Sith planet Moraband.
  • Luke Skywalker (Robot Chicken): We couldn’t miss the opportunity to mention the actor’s repeated appearances as his famous character in this sitcom. At times he also played Harrison Ford and Chucky.
  • Senator Stampington (Metalocalypse): Stampington appears frequently to inform the Tribunal of what Dethklok is doing. Mark Hamill also voices several members of the Tribunal itself.
  • Skips (Regular Show): This yeti is an entertaining part of the show, even if he has his tragic story behind him. Mark Hamill provides voices for extra characters in the show as well.
  • Larry 3000 (Time Squad): Not many remember this hilarious cartoon, but those who do surely have in mind the dashing Larry, his accents, and amusing personality.
  • Bad Cat (The Powerpuff Girls): Remember the cartoon episode where the girls rescue a kitten, only to discover that this is the real villain? Well, that feline was Mark Hamill.
  • Joker (different Batman series): Mark Hamill’s first official credit as the Joker is in Batman: The Animated Series, an iconic role that he reprised throughout the character’s history, including the future film The Killing Joke.
  • Ozai (Avatar: The Last Airbender): Could we have a worse bad guy than Ozai? Hamill didn’t need to make him sound unhinged to be villainous, the character’s actions spoke for themselves.

No One Would Guesss Mark Hamill in Avatar Would Be Done So Well

Villains must be very striking, having much to do with the appearance; what stands out, differentiates, and stands out from the other villains is the personality and character that this one possesses, unique to the character and that can only be seen in him. Whether erratic and intelligent or brutal, you have to have the perfect mix of characteristics to form a being of terror for series.

Of course, a villain is only as interesting as his dynamic with the protagonist, and one of the things that make their relationship genuinely deep is the contrasts that can be seen in their actions. In Ozai’s case, all of these factors are fulfilled.

Even though the fire lord’s appearances were rather sparse during the series than Azula and Zuko, no one can question Mark Hamill’s performance playing the Fire Nation’s ruler. And how the legend of Aang presents the story makes the main antagonist somehow neither Zuko nor Azula nor Ozai himself. The real antagonist in the legend of Aang is war, which has been destroying the balance of the world and corrupting all its inhabitants for 100 years. So it is no wonder that Ozai is shown to be so evil as the heir to this war.

Thus ends the story of Ozai, heir to a war he inevitably lost, a truly diabolical villain, a heartless genocide, a villain who made the bravest tremble only to end up imprisoned and die of old age. Mark Hamill will always be remembered for his flawless performance in this great series.

They discovered a person trapped inside the chunk of ice. And Katara started to dig him out. Unknowingly, they discovered the lost Avatar Aang.

Aang was not only the Avatar but also the last surviving person of the Air Nomads. Firelord Sozin killed all the Air Nomads to kill the Avatar because he knew that after Avatar Roku, the next Avatar would be born an Air Nomad.

Luckily Aang survived Sozin’s attack and went into a slumber for 99 years. Waking a year before the arrival of the Sozin’s comet. The arrival of this comet marked the 100 Years of War. Aang immediately liked Katara and asked her if she wanted to go penguin sledding with him. Zuko attacked Katara’s village in search of the Avatar, to which Aang surrendered on the condition that the village is left unharmed.

Katara then went to save Aang with the help of Appa. After Aang was successfully rescued, she asked him to teach him water bending. To which he replied that they could go to the North Pole and learn Water bending together.

Katara rescued Aang’s body and used the holy water from the hidden oasis of the Northern Water Tribe to revive Aang.

Fire Nation

In the year of the arrival of the Sozin’s Comet, the team tried to take down Firelord Max Ozai on the day of the Black Sun, when a solar eclipse will cause all the fire benders to lose their power. For this, they went to the Fire Nation well before the day of the attack.

They changed into traditional Fire Nation attires and went on to have several adventures before the day of the Black Sun. After the invading forces were captured and the attack of the team avatar failed. All the members allowed Aang and the rest of his team to escape.

After Aang mastered all the elements, he fought Firelord Max Ozai on the day of the arrival of the Sozin’s comet. After defeating Ozai, Aang did not want to kill him, so he took his bending away.

Aang’s Staff: All You Need To Know

Aang’s staff is a support tool that Aang frequently used for assistance in air bending, the most notable example being to fly. He used two staffs, his original one, which the Air Nomad monks handcrafted, and a new one created by the mechanist and his son Teo. He also incorporated it with his waterbending and earthbending.

It is primarily a bending weapon, used mainly by Aang in the Avatar: The Last Airbender series.

Aang’s Staff: The Original Glider

Aang’s original staff was a thin, long, wooden staff used by Aang not only as a weapon but also as a tool to manipulate air currents with airbending. With the staff, he sent powerful blasts of air toward his enemies by triggering the smaller wing on the staff as a miniature fan.

He could also use it as a glider, as it came with a pair of orange folding wings. It was hand-crafted by the monks of the Southern Air Temple. Aang was very attached to his staff, as he became angry when Toph used it like a nutcracker. Aang woke up several weeks following the fall of Ba Sing Se, afflicted from the injuries sustained by being shot in the back with lightning by Azula.

Out of anger at his failure to defeat the Fire Nation princess at the Earth Kingdom capital, Aang took his glider to attack the Fire Nation head-on. Unfortunately, Aang was not strong enough and lost the glider at sea during a strong storm.

Aang survived the storm and was eventually found by his friends on Crescent Island, while the glider washed up on shore, damaged beyond repair. However, Aang knew that such a device would reveal his identity, and therefore he left it to burn in a nearby river of lava.

The History of the Airbending Staff

Prior to the Hundred Year War

As an Airbender, Kelsang had an Airbender staff of his own, which he took with him everywhere he went. For example, Kuruk once used Kelsang’s staff to fly from a meadow near Yaoping to the nearby mountain and battle a dark spirit.

The staff enabled Kelsang in 296 BG to escape the range of Fifth Nation pirate waterbenders at the South Pole and fly in pursuit of the pirate fleet and stop its advance. The wings of his staff were damaged in the process; however when the pirate leader Tagaka pierced them with a flurry of ice needles, which caused Kelsang to fall into the sea.

Kelsang’s staff was later repaired, and he used it to travel long distances in the Earth Kingdom in pursuit of Jianzhu, who had stolen Pengpeng, his flying bison. Catching up to his target, Kelsang used his staff to create a gale of wind to blast his friend away with the least amount of harm, though Jianzhu responded by earthbending a small piece of the earth through the windstorm, which hit Kelsang in the neck and killed him.

Jinpa also possessed an Airbender staff and made use of it in North Chung-Ling as the townsfolk asked the monk for his blessing. He created a wide breeze that swept over the fairground, declaring that all touched by the wind would succeed in business and health. He later used the staff to wedge apart the feuding Saowon and Keohso clan members as they threatened each other in the village square.

Monk Gyatso

A young Monk Gyatso used his staff to air surf during airbending training with Avatar Roku in the Southern Air Temple.

Sometime before 0 AG, Airbender staff were used by young Air Nomads during airbending training to take flight. Avatar Roku demonstrated several air loops to a young Gyatso, who, in turn, attempted to air surf. However, the young nomad fell off his glider, prompting Roku to catch him. With Gyatso lying atop his glider, Roku was unable to stabilize his glider staff, which resulted in both of them making a crash-landing to the ground.

During The Hundred Year War

Aang’s staff was a prominent tool during the Hundred Year War as well. Following his discovery in the Southern Water Tribe in 99 AG, Aang used his staff extensively during his travels. On several occasions, the young Avatar demonstrated the instrument’s capabilities as a weapon by using it to augment his bending.

Aang sent powerful blasts of wind toward his enemies; by triggering a small wing on his staff that acted similar to a miniature fan. He was also able to conjure compressed air swipes to deflect projectiles and attack enemies and generate vortexes by using the staff as a fixed point of origin.

The staff’s dual purpose as a functional glider also benefited Aang in many combat situations, as it provided him with an aerial advantage and a convenient means of escape.

The Replacement

Aang’s Staff gets a replacement after he loses the original one in Book 3. Aang traveled through the Fire Nation without a staff until the Day of Black Sun, when the invasion force arrived at the Black Cliffs. The mechanist created a brand new staff for Aang, which was considerably thinner than the staff used by Air Nomads. The wooden instrument also came with blue wings and fins deployed through spring-loaded mechanisms and a built-in snack compartment to provide the user with energy during flight.

Although he originally considered the feature trivial and frivolous, Aang eventually found it useful while flying alone to confront Fire Lord Ozai in the Fire Nation Capital.

Aang’s new staff functioned similarly to his old staff during the invasion, although it produced slightly less powerful blasts of air. However, the new instrument was considerably more resilient, as Aang could bend it back to fling himself forward and blast Azula with air.

After The Hundred Year War

During the Harmony Restoration Movement, Aang used his staff to fly with Katara over Yu Dao’s walls to avoid Fire Nation guards, who only allowed individuals to enter with Fire Lord Zuko’s permission. While searching for Ursa and the other members of Team Avatar, Aang used his staff to pursue Azula, who had jumped off Appa during flight. The staff was singed, however, when it was shot with fire by the young princess.

When Was Aang’s Staff Given To Him?

While he was young, Aang was presented with an Airbender staff handcrafted by the monks for his training. After overhearing a discussion between the monks, which culminated in Monk Pasang’s decision to send Aang to complete his training in the Eastern Air Temple, Aang ran away with Appa, bringing the Airbender staff among his possessions.

Aang’s Staff: Usage

The staff is a small unpowered device that requires airbending to use as a glider. To ride it – users grasp hold of the two leading spars of the lift wings and loop their feet over the spars of the stabilizers. Airbenders use their bending to manipulate the air around the staff and provide lift, as the staff generates only minimal lift by itself. Generally, airbenders will create a small burst of wind to lift themselves off the ground to get the staff into the air.

Despite its delicacy, an Airbender staff can be used as a regular quarterstaff; and employed to augment various defensive and offensive airbending maneuvers. As it extends the airbender’s reach, staff can create more powerful gusts of wind; due to the long arm motion used in performing a technique.

However, direct physical contact between the staff and an object is discouraged; due to the instrument’s aforementioned delicacy, as evidenced by Aang’s discomfort when Toph used his staff to crack nuts. When spun in front of the body, an Airbender staff will help create an air shield capable of deflecting direct firebending attacks. If lifted over the head, the spinning staff will allow for short vertical or hovering flight periods.

Skilled airbenders can also use airbending staff to perform variations of surfing. Gyatso demonstrated air surfing by standing on his glider and gliding through the air. Conversely, Aang traveled across the Mo Ce Sea by windsurfing, through his staff as a sail and a piece of driftwood as aboard. Although windsurfing requires less energy than flying, it is less efficient over longer distances.

Fun Facts

  • An airbender’s signature tool is their staff.
  • The original Air Nomad staffs were the inspiration for the mechanist’s gliders; which he created to allow his paraplegic son, Teo, to fly.
  • While intended for use by airbenders, Aang also used his staff to augment his earthbending and waterbending.
  • While the new airbenders after Harmonic Convergence in 171 AG used staffs akin to those of the original Air Nomads; Korra’s staff and the one Zaheer stole from Tenzin’s study resembled the one the mechanist made for Aang. Although Zaheer’s had orange wings instead of blue.

What Is The Airbender Staff Made Of?

Aang’s staff is a delicate instrument that the Air Nomad monks handcraft. The staff’s shaft is made of a single piece of lightweight wood, which is hollowed down the center. Two wider, diamond-shaped pieces are located at the quarters near the top and bottom, into which a pair of brass rods are inserted.

These rods form the hinges for the fan-like wings, transforming the staff into a glider for flight. The mechanist’s variation of the staff is similar to that of its authentic counterpart, except with a rounded shaft; blue, rectangular wings, handlebars, and an added snack compartment.

Each wing is made of four thin shafts of the same kind of wood, fitted exactly to ascertain that they lie flush with the side when rotated back into the body of the staff. Across these shafts is a thick wax surface that gives the staff a similar appearance to a large fan.

There are four wings on the staff, two of which are located in the center that provides the principal lift; and two at the base that is used for stabilization. All four wings fold back into the body with a snap; and fit so precisely that the staff feels like a singular piece of wood.

Avatar Dragon: History, Background and Anatomy

The avatar dragon is the original practitioner of firebending, capable of breathing fire. The species demonstrated the true way of firebending to the Sun Warriors’ civilization, a precursor to the modern-day Fire Nation and Wan, the first Avatar. As such, dragons are highly respected by both the Sun Warriors and the Fire Nation,

History Of The Avatar Dragon

In the year 9,832 BG, after Wan was banished from his village atop a fire lion turtle, he began his life among the spirits in the Spirit Wilds. He had been allowed to keep the power over fire from the creature. During his two-year stay, he came across a white avatar dragon, who performed intricate movements while flying through the sky. Mimicking these movements, Wan became the first known human to perform the Dancing Dragon.

Thousands of years after this encounter, between 12 BG and 0 AG, Aang and Kuzon scoured Fire Nation mountaintops in the hopes of finding the elusive avatar dragon species. Instead, they ended up saving an avatar dragon egg from poachers and giving it back to its mother.

During his time as Fire Lord, Sozin began hunting dragons as the ultimate sport throughout the Fire Nation. Anyone who managed to slay an avatar dragon earned the honorary title of “Dragon,”; and their talents as firebenders would become legendary. However, near the end of the Hundred Year War, dragons were thought to be extinct due to General Iroh’s claim that he had killed the final one.

However, while searching for the last civilization of the Sun Warriors, Aang and Zuko discovered that two dragons, Ran and Shaw, were still alive, deducing that Iroh had lied to protect the species. The duo was made to promise that they would never reveal anything about the so-thought lost civilization and the dragons.

By 171 AG, a new dragon, Druk, a descendant of Ran and Shaw, had been born and later became Zuko’s mount. However, dragons were still a scarce sight, and very few people were still aware of their existence, as an average person was shocked to view a dragon firsthand.

Anatomy Of The Avatar Dragon

The avatar dragon is a large, horned reptile with a long, scaly body that ends in a thin tail. Its head is large compared to the rest of its body, and its bearded face is dominated by a wide, flat nose, golden, cat-like eyes, and long whiskers.

It also appears that there seem to be several subspecies of dragons. There are both winged and non-winged dragons, their size and number differing; depending on dragon species.

Some have two large wings that enable them to fly over great distances, while others, like the green dragon, have an extra, smaller pair of wings. However, regardless of the presence of wings, the dragons are capable of flight, as seen with the white dragon that resided in the Spirit Wilds during the era of Raava.

Significance of The Red and Blue Avatar Dragon

The red and blue dragons in Zuko’s nightmare gave him advice.

The symbolism of the red and blue dragons has appeared several times throughout Team Avatar’s adventures. Commonly, the red dragon represents honor and goodness, while the blue dragon represents seduction and evil.

While living in Ba Sing Se, Zuko dreamed that he was the Fire Lord and lacked his scar. Two dragons, one red and one blue, gave him advice. The blue dragon spoke with the voice of Azula, while the red dragon spoke with the voice of Iroh.

The blue dragon sought to harm Zuko, encouraging him to “sleep forever,” whereas the red dragon told him to “escape.” This dream was eventually brought to life; when Azula and Iroh gave Zuko different advice in the Crystal Catacombs of Ba Sing Se. Zuko decided to fight by Azula’s side, later regretting his decision.

Sozin’s Blue Avatar Dragon

The red and blue dragons represented the conflict between Avatar Roku and Fire Lord Sozin, with Roku’s dragon was red and Sozin’s blue. Roku and Sozin were initially friends, but they grew distant over time. Both dragons were present on Roku’s island when Sozin betrayed Roku and left his old friend to die in the volcanic eruption. Sozin escaped on his blue dragon while Fang swooped in so he could die with Roku.

Ran of the original firebending masters is a red dragon, and one is a blue dragon. Though no distinction of personality or name was made between them; the red one paired with Zuko and the blue one with Aang as they do the “Dancing Dragon” form.

However, when Aang and Zuko finished displaying the “Dancing Dragon” form and prepared to face the dragons’ judgment, Aang faced the red dragon and Zuko the blue one. The dragons deemed them worthy and showed Aang and Zuko the original meaning of firebending

Trivia On Dragons In Avatar

  • In Chinese culture, different colored dragons are associated with different locations ; as blue dragons reside in bodies of water while red dragons are associated with the south.
  • Ran and Shaw encircle each other in a similar way to Tui and La. This symbolizes the taijitu, commonly known as the yin and yang symbol, which is usually black and white.
  • There was a golden dragon statue in the Fire Nation’s throne room during Sozin’s reign.
  • While the dragons of the Avatar World are depicted with wings, the white dragon with which Wan trained during the era of Raava did not possess any,[3] and neither did the red and blue dragon from Zuko’s dream.
  • In the unrelated franchise comic “New Recruits”, Hiroshi has a pet rock-dragon named Genji that complements his earthbending.

Connection To Chinese Culture

Dragons in the World of Avatar draw inspiration from several different cultures. Aesthetically, they are heavily influenced by traditional Chinese depictions of dragons: long serpentine body, whiskers, fin-like ears, wild-looking eyes, canine snout, and the position and proportions of the horns and legs; one of the nine different types of Chinese dragons, also possess wings.

However, influences from other Asian cultures are also present, such as the dragons having four toes, which is typically a Korean trait.

In Chinese and other East Asian mythologies, dragons are traditionally portrayed as a chimerical mix of lizards, camels, goats, and bats. Still, their image seems refined in adaptation for the animation to the Western audience.

The ability to breathe fire and the presence of wings are characteristics more common in European dragons. Still, they are included in the dragons of the Avatar world as they are typical aspects of the western idea of dragons.

These features were also included to enhance the dragons’ connection to firebending, as Asian dragons are more closely associated with water than any other element, taking, for example, Yinglong, the only winged Chinese dragon.

Complete Guide To The Avatar Background

We all know about the Avatar Aang and Avatar Korra from their respective TV Series. But did you ever think about the background of Avatar? And how the Avatar got its powers? Avatar Aang was the lead character of Avatar: The Last Airbender while Avatar Korra was the main lead in The Legend Of Korra.

Both of these shows received critical acclaim and a huge fan-following. Avatar: The Last Airbender showcased the Avatar universe that was engulfed in war. Because the Fire Nation had started a war against the rest of the nations. And was slowly inching towards victory with each passing day. Avatar Aang was the only person who could defeat the Fire Lord and restore balance to the world.

And likewise, The Legend Of Korra revolved around the life of Avatar Korra and her adventures in a world after Aang. Most of the show was centered around Republic City. The Capital of the United Republic of Nations. This united republic was formed by Aang himself where all the people from different kingdoms could converge.

The people that belonged to the very first colonies of the Fire Nation in other Kingdoms. Became a part of these kingdoms and had married in those kingdoms as well. So they opposed the idea of disbanding the colonies as they considered themselves a part of the kingdoms where they were living. To solve this issue Aang, Zuko, and Kuei lay the foundation of a democratic republic where Korra ultimately was born.

But in this article, we will focus on the background of how The Avatar got his powers and came into existence. And how did he evolve into becoming the link between spirit and the human worlds?

Background Of The Avatar

In the Human World of the Avatar universe, an avatar is a person that has the ability to bend all four elements. And his primary role is to maintain a balance between all these kingdoms. An avatar also serves as the link between the human and spirit worlds. But about 10,000 years before Korra the world was a very different place. Spirits roamed the human world freely and humans were very few in number. Both of these entities were always at odds and competed for the resources of the world.

Humans were very few in number and did not live on the mainlands where spirits were mostly found. Humans were living in the sea-turtle cities situated on the backs of huge sea turtles. The sea turtles protected the humans from these wandering spirits. In one of these cities, a person named Wan was born. Who later went on to become the first Avatar over the course of his lifetime. And was the first human to master all the four elements.

History Of Wan

Wan was born in a city situated on the back of a fire lion. He was very poor and his only mission in life was to steal food from the ruling Chou family and give it to his friends. He was caught one day and could not get the food so gave them whatever little he had remained. But after this encounter, he was extremely demoralized and questioned the imbalance of the world. Afterwards, he was recruited by a group of hunters who were going onto the mainland to look for food.

But before they went on their journey the fire lion gave them the ability of firebending so that they could survive in the wild. But they were to return the firebending on their return. Wan did not do so and used his ability to steal from the Chou family after returning to the city. He attacked their food supplies while using a mask but was uncovered by the Chou’s. This led him to be presented in front of the Lion turtle for his crime. He was banished to the wild but was allowed to keep the power to protect himself in the wild.

Wan’s Banishment

The initial days were very troubling for Wan as he was constantly fighting the spirits and was famished. He could not find anything to eat. He discovered an Oasis but was refused entry by the aye-aye spirit because he was human. After being refused entry into the oasis he set out in search of other cities. But encountered a trapped cat deer spirit and helped it out of the net that hunters had put to capture it.

After this the aye-aye spirit was convinced that he is not like other humans and allowed him entry into the oasis. He stayed with the spirits for some time and mastered firebending by the dragons. He used his abilities to protect the spirits and drive off hostile humans.

Encounter With Raava

After two years Wan left the oasis behind in search of other turtle cities. While on his search he encountered two spirits fighting. When he tried to intervene Raava told him that this fight does not concern him. He intervened nonetheless on pleas of Vaatu who asked Wan to help as he had been facing torture for 10,000 years. And freed Vaatu from Raava. To which Raava rebuked him and introduced herself as the spirit of light and Vaatu as the spirit of Darkness.

Wan was ashamed of his actions and offered his help to Raava but she rejected him. Wan then went to a city where people had the ability of Airbending. He met them and told them of their exploits, but Vaatu appeared and turned all the spirits into their evil form. After which the spirits started to attack the humans. Right at that time Raava appeared and chased Vaatu away.

Background Behind Wan Becoming The Avatar

After this encounter, Wan noticed that she has grown weak and offered his help again. Raava accepted his help and they went to the lion turtle to ask for the ability of Airbending as well. The creature gave him the ability on the condition that Raava will hold it till he masters it. Raava then passes through Wan while bonding their energy in the process. And gave him the Airbending ability. Both of them traveled to other cities and helped Wan master the remaining elements as well.

On their travels, they met Wan’s old friends that were very hostile towards the spirits. Wan tried to explain to them that not all spirits are bad. But at the same time, Vaatu appeared turning all the surrounding spirits evil. Wan used his ability of all four elements but was defeated so Raava had to fuse herself with Wan, but Vaatu escaped and told them that he will fight Raava on the day of harmonic convergence.

Formation Of The Avatar Spirit

On the day of harmonic convergence, both the southern and northern portals to the spirit world converged into one. Wan fought Vaatu at the day with Vaatu easily avoiding all the attacks on him. So Wan asked Raava to bond with him to defeat Vaatu. Both of them fought bravely but were no match for Vaatu.

Wan even risked his life by allowing Raava to bond with himself for very long without even caring for his life. Desperate to defeat Vaatu, Wan placed his hand on the portal which bonded him with Raava permanently, giving rise to the Avatar spirit and Avatar form. This bonding provided him with huge strength due to which he was able to defeat Vaatu and trap him inside an elemental cage. And imprisoned him inside the Hollow Tree Of Spirit.

Aftermath

After defeating Vaatu, Wan asked all the spirits to return to the spirit world and closed the portals afterward. Wan became the bridge between the spirit world and started to teach the world to respect the spirits. His other job was to keep a balance between the people of different turtle cities with different powers. He spent his life doing this and died while striving for this balance as well. After his death, Raava bonded with his incarnation making him the new Avatar.

All the Avatars are actually the incarnation of Avatar Wan and have the same purpose which is to maintain the balance of the Avatar universe. All the different incarnations spent their life while trying to do this task.

Each Avatar could also connect with his past selves with the help of the Avatar spirit and ask them for guidance. Each new Avatar improved the abilities of the previous incarnation making them more powerful with each passing incarnation according to this look into the background of the Avatar.

10 Best Sokka Moments From The Last Airbender Series

The oldest member of the avatar gang is an aspiring warrior determined to protect the ones he loves. He’s a beloved cast member who has a huge fan following and many heartwarming moments as he was there from day one. We’re here to revisit some of his most impressive (and hilarious) moments that stuck with us throughout the ages. Here are the 10 best Sokka Moments.

1. Saving Korra (Best Sokka Moments)

We couldn’t make it through the list without mentioning at least one moment from The Legend of Korra so that we will start and end it here. Although Sokka grows up to be an impressive war hero, many fans argue he wasn’t given enough justice.

He died shortly after the death of Aang and only appears in flashbacks or memorabilia. He even died off-screen without any real explanation (that feels a little unfair considering how important a character he was). Also, considering that he had some of the most romantic moments during the initial iteration, it seems a little unfair he died without any children and without any mention of how his love life ended with Suki.

There is one moment where he jumps in and shines. When the young avatar, Korra, is kidnapped, he rushes in to save the day and her father. He proves she’s a true hero and gets one solid moment in with Korra before his passing (not that she remembers it). It’s nice to know that he still had it; even in his old age, he was able to have one of his Best Sokka Moments.

2. Defeating Jet

The hundred-year war was brutal for many people, and few characters felt it more than Katara and Sokka. Their lives were uprooted, their mother was murdered, and their father was out fighting a war. This was all before they got roped into the avatar adventures where countless people tried to kill them and their friends.

Though they had a lot of reasons to hate the fire nation, Sokka still had a heart. He was put in an awful situation when they met Jet. Jet was a vigilante who seemed to want nothing more than justice for the wronged people by the fire nation. He was strong, charismatic, and really took care of his crew. He watched both of his parents perish at the hands of the fire nation – so he has his reasons to hold onto his ways.

He quickly wins over Aang and Katara, who love the “Freedom Fighters,” however, Sokka remains skeptical. While it would be easy for him to join in on the love and get on board with their plans, he’s the only one perceptive enough to realize something is up.

Not only that, but he is the one that has to break the news that Jet isn’t what he’s cut out to be. While the fire nation also hurt Sokka, he can’t bring himself to justify hurting innocent civilians solely because of their affiliation. He puts a stop to Jet despite him arguing they are on the same side. This was a huge demonstration of his character that forced us to think about morals.

3. The Cactus Juice (Best Sokka Moments and One of The Funiest)

Going onto a lighter moment – we have one of those instances where Sokka is full of comic relief. Many events of desert-walking events led to the team being a bit depressing; luckily, Sokka was there to jump in and offer us all a good laugh.

His cactus juice hallucinations are iconic. They were some of the funniest moments ever that were immortalized in our memories. It was a subtle way to slip some adult humor in a show allegedly targeted at children. Of course, they couldn’t help but slip in the depressing comment about how his first girlfriend became the moon and died in front of him.

The Cactus Juice scene will always be one of the funniest and Best Sokka moments.

4. The Fortune Teller

He actually has a lot of sad moments, considering his comic relief in the show. There is a lot to say about the funniest characters always being a bit depressing, though. The fortune-telling moment is one that took place pretty early on in the series. While he dismisses her “powers,” she quick to make jabs at his self-sabotaging ways and how he will endure a lot of self-inflicted pain.

It’s comically addressed as he hurts himself with a pebble and argues with villagers about science. “Can your science explain why it rains?” “YES! Yes, it can!”

We all know someone who makes us relate, so Sokka just a little bit more; however, there was a lot of heavy truth to come with these predictions. Of course, the fortune teller had some rather vague thoughts about the gang, but there is reason to believe she’s probably right—depressing, but something to think about.

5. Destroying Fire Nation Cannons

If nothing else, people can never say that Sokka didn’t do his part. On the day of the black sun, he stepped up his game and showed that he is an asset. Many jokes and jobs made at his worth for not being a bender, but he has always proved his abilities in one way or another. In this case, it was by helping destroy fire nation cannons.

6. Training with Plandao (Best Sokka Moments)

Although not a bender, he does have a lot of talent and skills to offer. Yeah, he has his boomerang, but we can’t forget all that sword fighting training he received from Plandao. He put up a huge fight, and to the audience, it seemed like his last-minute confession might have signed a death certificate.

Plandao seems to give it his all as it goes against Sokka, and it almost seems like Sokka is going to lose (even after temporarily blinding his opponent). In the end, he proves his worth, and Plandao lets him know, despite his best efforts, he wasn’t doing an excellent job at being undercover fire nation. He grants him a sword (and his praise) for all of his efforts and lets him and the avatar crew leave unharmed.

He really is a fierce warrior that deserves more credit for the talents that he’s managed to master despite any bending abilities.

7. Took Down Airships

Another sheer demonstration of his abilities was taking down the airships with some of the other avatar crew. He was doing amazing, and he (and Suki) were really showing that you don’t need to be a bender to cause some havoc.

There was also a lot of action going on with their fellow bender friends. Unfortunately, Toph was out of her element in the side. Although she was a formidable opponent as a now-metal bender, she was completely “blind” once in the sky. When she needed to jump, Sokka was there to catch her, and she actually trusted him. He also was the one to rush in and protect Toph from falling debris beings she really wasn’t able to see things falling.

8. Kyoshi Warrior

On the topic of Suki, Sokka is also the only male to complete the Kyoshi warrior training. Although he started with some sexist views on the whole thing, he finally acknowledged Suki and the other members as warriors and not just women. It was a funny moment full of valuable lessons, showing that you can grow past outdated beliefs.

9. Escaped Boiling Rock

The Kyoshi warriors are recognized for their trademark outfits and makeup. These were things prisoners were just not afforded. So when Sokka went on one of those life-changing adventures with Zuko, they decided to break into a high-security prison, boiling rock.

It was a game-changing moment of the series as they managed to break out Sokka’s dad, Suki, and a new ally. It was also the moment where Mai demonstrated her loyalty to Zuko over Azula.

10. Destroying Melon Lord ( of the Best Sokka Moments)

Finally, one of the darkest moments of the universe came right at the end. Aang was an air nomad raised by monks who believed in peace. But, on the other hand, the fire lord wanted nothing but destruction and power – and was willing to take anything for it.

They were not about to have a tea party and discuss politics upon the big confrontation. One of the chief questions towards the end of the stories is… what will Aang do? Everyone tries to tell him that he needs to kill him, but this is a pretty dark event for young Airbender; even with everything that happened, killing remained off the table.

As many see it is the only thing to do, Sokka goes ahead and tries to “help” with the demonstration of the melon lord. While Aang is squeamish about the whole thing, Sokka insists it’s easy to “take care of it.” Although this is written somewhat lighter, it’s pretty dark when you think about it. It just goes to show that above all the laughs and puns – Sokka is a warrior willing to do whatever it takes to end the war.

Azula & The Boiling Rock Episode Backstory

We all know that Azula loves to ruin all the fun. It might as well be her specialty after Zuko and Sokka arrive at the Boiling Rock, the Rendezvous with Hakoda and Suki coincidentally. Sokka is more than overjoyed to see Suki at first but gets punched in the gut before expressing his happiness. She narrates her ordeal of how Azula captured her and the rest of the Kyoshi Warriors. She explains that they sent her to the Boiling Rock.

As the Warden would later brag, it is the fire nation’s most secure prison. Suki was sent to the Boiling Rock for being their leader. She assures Sokka that if his father were sent anywhere, it would have to be the Boiling Rock Prison.

Soon after, new prisoners are arriving at the Boiling Rock. Sokka is excited as he sees that it could be his chance to rescue his father. The prisoners are lined up to be introduced to the warden.

Meanwhile, Sokka is disguised as a guard in prison. When he is about to lose hope of seeing his father again, he arrives at the scene. He is glad to see his father Hakoda among the new arrivals. The warden explains the history of the Boiling Rock. He also doesn’t fail to mention that no one has ever escaped from it.

This is in an attempt to break the prisoner’s minds and damage any thoughts of escape that they might have harbored.

More Backstory

Hakoda defies the warden’s orders to look him in the eyes and trips him, which causes Sokka to snicker. The warden angrily orders the new arrivals to be taken from his sight and confined to their cells. Sokka later enters his father’s cell, still disguised as a guard, which causes Hakoda almost to attack him.

However, when Hakoda recognizes his son, he is overjoyed. Sokka explains to his father that it’s okay that he didn’t realize it was him as Hokoda remarks that he almost punched him in the gut. He tells him that he had that similar problem earlier, referring to the incident with Suki.

The warden then proceeds to interrogate the recaptured Chit Sang. He tries to grill him to find out who was helping him with the escape plan. He strongly believes that he and his friends are nowhere smart enough to think of such an intricate plan by themselves.

Chit Sang refuses to talk as he is not “a squealer.” The warden has his guards torture him by holding him upside down in his chair until he reveals the person’s identity. He tells the warden that the mastermind of the failed prison break is a guard.

Meanwhile, Sokka and his father devised a plan for Suki, Zuko, and themselves to escape the prison. Sokka makes his way to Zuko’s prison cell and tries to share the plan but is interrupted by two guards who take Zuko away.

Sokka feigns brutalizing Zuko alone inside his cell so he can reveal when they should next meet. Zuko is taken into another cell where he is confronted by his ex-girlfriend, Mai.

Meanwhile, the warden comes back to see whether Chit Sang will talk. Chit Sang reveals somebody did help him, although he only indicates someone disguised as a correctional officer. He lines up the guards to have Chit Sang identify the traitor. Sokka, completely sure that this was it for him, squints for the other shoe to drop. Chit Sang instead chooses to accuse a hot-headed guard that he doesn’t get along with.

Mai, still hurt that Zuko broke up with her, yells at him for leaving only a farewell letter as he left to join the Avatar. Zuko tries to explain he had to leave to save the Fire Nation, though Mai counters that he is betraying it. Finally, Zuko firmly tells her he does not see it that way, prompting Mai to cross her arms and look to the side.

Azula The People Person

At this point, Azula is entering the interrogation cell where the correctional officer is being grilled. She walks in on him frustratingly, saying it wasn’t him. The warden fills Azula in on the state of the prison. She instantly concludes that the guard wasn’t one of them and that the warden wasted his time. He is shocked and asks her why she seems so sure. Azula replies that this is because she is “a people person.”

Sokka manages to trick a guard into unlocking all of the cells during what was supposed to be lockdown while new arrivals are processed, letting the prisoners out into the yard.

He meets up with Suki and Hakoda outside. All they need to commence the escape plan is a riot. Trying to solve the problem quickly, Hakoda goes and pushes a big, tough-looking prisoner. However, much to his and their surprise, this plan fails. The tough-looking prisoner tells them that he had been working on anger management.
Chit Sang comes into view and surprises Sokka.

He tells him that he did not expose him since he knew that Sokka would come up with another escape plan, and he wants in again. Sokka points out that they are trying to escape right now and asks Chit Sang if he knows how to start a riot. Much to their surprise, he picks up a bystander and tells everyone, “Hey, RIOT!”

This causes every inmate to start fighting spontaneously. Even the prisoner Hakoda attempted to provoke, working on his anger issues, decided to stop controlling his anger. Finally, the warden appears and angrily demands to know how all the prisoners were released into the yard during the lockdown, prompting the guard who let them out to sneak away guiltily.

Mai is still interrogating Zuko, but a guard under the orders of her uncle appears to protect her during the riot. Zuko takes the chance, fire bends at the guard’s feet and rushes out of the room. The guard attempts to shield Mai from the fire, preventing her from reacting. Zuko locks her and the guard in the cell and escapes to the yard, where he meets up with the others.

When they fill Zuko in on the next phase of the plan to capture the warden, he asks to know how they hoped to achieve this. Sokka says he isn’t sure. Sokka and Zuko argue about capturing the warden, Suki takes the initiative and goes after him independently.

She runs on the heads of the rioting prisoners and guards and scales the yard’s walls with an amazing display of acrobatics. She disables the guards protecting the warden, ties him up, and gags him. They all meet up, the warden now their hostage, and make their way to the gondola.

Enter Azula: The Boiling Rock

Azula steps on the scene as they were much on their way into the gondola.

The group gets onto the gondola. Zuko, thinking ahead, decides to break the lever. Sokka, asking him why he did that when he didn’t know what it was for. Zuko told him that he’s making it so the guards can’t stop them. As they begin to ascend, Hakoda spots Azula and Ty Lee and asks Zuko who they are. Zuko says, “That’s my sister and her friends.”

He also states that they are a problem. Before the words completely leave his mouth, Ty Lee hops on the gondola line and starts running forward while Azula propels herself with fire, bending toward the gondola. Suki fights Ty Lee while Sokka and Zuko fight Azula on the top of the gondola. Suki says she has been waiting for the rematch for a long time.

The warden breaks free of his binding and yells at the guards to cut the line. The guards were shocked, wondering if he didn’t know that he would die. Finally, one of them says that he knows, and they begin to cut the line. Chit Sang quickly restrains the warden, but he is too late to prevent the warden’s orders from being relayed to the guards at the prison, who begin to cut the wire after some initial hesitation.

Soon as they realize what is going on, Azula and Ty Lee propel themselves onto another oncoming gondola on a separate cable. Azula tells her brother goodbye, assuming that he will fall to his death in the boiling lake. However, just as the guards are about to finish cutting, Mai steps in and saves them, incapacitating the guards.

She pins the guards with her daggers and kicks off the brake originally placed on the gondola line, causing it to move again. A guard asks her what she is doing, to which she replies, “Saving the jerk who dumped me.”

The Fall of Azula Began Here

She frees the line, causing them to make it out of the volcano, leaving the warden behind in the gondola. Hakoda gladly tells the warden that his record is finally broken. Zuko stops running as he figures that Azula must have come to the Boiling Rock somehow. He soon spots an uncrewed Fire Nation airship. The group uses it to escape off the island.

After this, Mai is detained by guards and brought forth to Azula. Azula asks for the guards to leave them alone. Ty Lee watches from the sidelines fearfully as Azula demands to know why Mai saved the escapees, knowing the consequences. Mai tells Azula she miscalculated, as she loves Zuko more than she fears Azula.

The two of them get in position to battle, but Ty Lee intervenes by blocking Azula’s chi, much to Mai and Azula’s surprise. Ty Lee and Mai try to escape but are quickly captured. Being dragged up by her guards, Azula calls them fools and orders the guards to let them rot in prison so she will never have to see their faces again.

Momo

Who Is Momo the Reincarnation of?

Avatar the Last Airbender is an amazing show set in an elaborate world inspired by real cultures. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out the connection between Buddhism and the air nomads. While their lifestyle and clothing certainly ring some bells, the whole concept of reincarnation is a major underlying theme of the whole series. The theme even continues with Momo.

In fact, it’s kind of the whole “avatar” thing. Aang is the reincarnation of the avatar entity – so who’s to say that he’s the only incarnation. One fan was quick to point out that there are many reasons why one of the most beloved (albeit unassuming) is likely a reincarnation.

Reddit user, PM_ME_SOME_ANY_THING, posted about how she believes there is a lot more to Momo than we give him credit for. They argue that Momo is actually the reincarnation of another air nomad, Monk Gyatso.

Who Is Monk Gyatso?

If the name doesn’t ring any immediate bells, don’t feel too bad. The character didn’t get a lot of screen time. In fact, we only got to see him in flashbacks (sparing the scarring moment when the gang discovered his skeleton in the deserted temples). He’s actually a very important character, though, who played a key role in Aang’s upbringing.

Gyatso was both Aang’s guardian and mentor. He was a gentle soul who guided the young avatar and taught him all about the ways of the air nomads. Gyatso was a fun-loving character who was an amazing airbender and, obviously, loved Aang very much. Even though he died nearly a century before, there is some reason to believe that he was watching over Aang and the gang in a somewhat literal sense.

What’s the Argument?

So what’s the reasoning behind Momo the old Monk? To understand this argument, we have to go all the way back to the grisly beginning of the flying lemur. Unlike Appa, Momo was not part of the gang from the start. When Aang first woke up and embarked on his adventure, it was just him, Appa, Katara, and Sokka.

It was a pretty rough and naïve start to this new adventure, and one of their first decisions as a group was to seek out their air temples. From the beginning of the story, we are told how the air nomads were wiped out by the fire nation (specifically to kill off any potential avatar reincarnations as the air nation was next in line). While the audience kind of expects this trip is going to go a little badly, there’s a part of us rooting for someone (anyone) to be there.

Well, it was a complete disaster.

The temples were not only destroyed but abandoned. While Aang remembers his home “just like it was yesterday,” a lot can happen in a hundred years (especially while there’s an intense war going on). Although there is not a person in sight, the gang soon finds out that they are actually not the only living things there. They end up finding the sole flying lemur, Momo.

What happens next is the moment that inspired the entire fan theory. Momo dashes off and inadvertently lead Aang to the remains of his mentor, Monk Gyatso. This seemingly coincidental moment sends Aang off the deep end. It’s our first real glimpse of just how dark this “children’s” show wants to take us.

How does this event point to reincarnation? Well, think about the intention for a moment. They were in a giant temple, and the lemur just so happened to lead him to the dead body of his mentor? Furthermore, the flying lemur doesn’t leave his side since this moment. It all starts out with a seemingly skittish lemur running away, but upon showing Aang the remains of the Monk (and him going full-on avatar-state), he joins the crew and never tries to leave again.

What does Aang think?

Of course, we can’t know what Aang is thinking, and it’s never explicitly said, but his strange relationship with the lemur also inspired the theory. Aang is a loving and compassionate character who takes care of his companions and loves animals. He goes above and beyond to keep them safe (and we all remember the drama and trauma of Appa going missing).

Still, not all of his interactions are the same. Appa, the flying bison with which he was raised (and frozen), is an important part of his life. They are very close, and he treats him with the utmost respect, even going far as defending him from passive-aggressive comments.

However, the relationship they have is really like that of someone and their pet. He gives Appa a few short phrases now and again and constantly tells him what a good bison he is. However, he does not have this same relationship with Momo. Instead, Aang talks to Momo as though he was a person.

He and Momo have a strong relationship that feels more like a person and their friend versus an animal. Momo also demonstrates some cognitively advanced behavior. Of course, this sounds like we’re really “reaching” wince. It’s a kid show, but many of the other animals act on commands or just like regular animals. However, Momo seems to have a higher level of self-awareness.

Considering how big of a part of their lives reincarnation is, it isn’t too farfetched to believe that Aang would believe Momo was a reincarnation. Plus, the two had a pretty deep and immediate connection with each other.

Is this theory confirmed?

So – like many other things in the universe of Avatar the Last Airbender, creators don’t actually comment on anything. They let fans freely express themselves without ever making any real comments. What we could look as is original intentions.

In the Avatar Extras, creators reveal some of the content from the episode where Momo first appeared at the Southern Air Temple. It turns out, originally, they were going to go with the idea that Momo was the reincarnation of Gyatso. Just because it was written into the original plan doesn’t mean that it’s true, though.

Momo went under several different “versions” before becoming the loveable lemur that we grew to know. There were plans to have him be a little robot companion or even have Aang’s tattoos. In the end, we got the lemur, and the direct confirmation about reincarnation was scrapped.

Will we ever know?

Avatar is getting a lot of attention thanks to the surge in popularity following the Netflix re-release. While the show ended over a decade ago, the franchise isn’t dead yet. Comics could always come through, and there is the chance that other elements of the story may be explored in the upcoming show.

For now, though, it seems fan theories will have to remain just that. Without any direct answers from creators, fan theories are just a great way to have fun and add depth to the universe.

Toph vs Bumi: Who Is Stronger And Who Would Win?

On Nickelodeon’s hit animated tv series; Avatar: The Last Airbender, Toph Beifong and King Bumi were great and powerful Earthbenders. However, which of the two is the stronger one. Who would win there ever was a Toph vs Bumi fight.

Many people would ask “Who was the stronger Earthbender in Avatar: The Last Airbender?” Since they were both on the same side, both of them never really squared off; spurring people to set up Toph vs Bumi fights off the grid.

Let’s face facts. Toph Beifong or King Bumi are certainly in the upper rankings of Earthbenders seen on either Avatar or its follow-up show: The Legend of Korra. They were also very good friends of Aang’s, as well. With the presence each of them held on Avatar, a case can be made for either of them as the stronger Earthbender.

Toph vs Bumi: Meet King Bumi

When viewers first met King Bumi on Avatar, he defied the image of the somewhat nutty old man he appeared to be, and proved to be a formidable opponent for Aang when the two faced off in the episode “The King of Omashu.”

This was also reflected not just in Bumi’s Earthbending skill, but in his physique, as well. Appearing from the outside to pose little threat to the young Avatar simply by virtue of his advanced age, Bumi removed his king’s robes, revealing a body in far greater physical shape than Aang and his friends had ever expected.

Of course, it’s revealed by the end of the episode that Bumi is an old friend of Aang’s from before the latter was frozen, with Bumi having simply been having a little fun with Aang not knowing his identity in the episode.

This showed that Bumi was a sharp strategist by tricking Aang into underestimating him, and that he was able to utilize every advantage at his disposal. While it’s clear that he never had any serious intention of harming Aang by the end of the episode, the fight he gave him nevertheless shows that he is a force to be reckoned with even as an elderly Earthbender.

Meet Toph Beifong

Toph Beifong was on the other side of the coin from Bumi, a blind pre-teen who could easily hold her own against the best Earthbenders in the world. Her blindness did nothing to slow her down, with Toph using the vibrations in the Earth below her feet to perceive the world around her and coordinate her attacks. Her great talent with her native element made her the perfect mentor to train Aang in Earthbending, while she would also be responsible for a quantum leap forward in the discipline.

Specifically, Toph would become the world’s first Metalbender, with metal itself being earth in its most pure and enriched state. Toph would pass the skill on to other Earthbenders while founding Republic City’s police force of Metalbenders seen on The Legend of Korra, with her two daughters Lin and Suyin also becoming Metalbenders. Ultimately, this facet of Toph’s Earthbending ability is the deciding factor in why, between herself and King Bumi, she is the stronger Earthbender.

Aside from being a highly skilled Earthbender to begin with, Toph being the progenitor of an entire new sub-discipline of element bending clearly shows that she possessed a more internalized connection to her element than virtually anyone else in the Earth Kingdom.

Not only that, but the fact that she discovered Metalbending at such a young age shows that her boast of being “the greatest Earthbender in the world” had plenty to back it up. Both King Bumi and Toph Beifong were tremendous fighters with a deep understanding of Earthbending, but in the end, it was Toph who was the strongest Earthbender in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

But that’s just the analytics. Toph vs Bumi actually have faced off, as the tie-in comic Toph vs Bumi: Round One

Toph vs Bumi: Round One; The Comic

Bumi vs. Toph, Round One is a comic that takes place in Book Three: Fire. It was originally released by Nickelodeon Comics Club magazine in 2009 and later released by Dark Horse Comics in The Lost Adventures.

Toph vs Bumi: Round One Overview

While waiting for Sozin’s Comet, Bumi and Toph have an earthbending rumble to decide who is the greatest earthbender of all time.

Synopsis

Hiding out and awaiting their battle with the Fire Lord, Suki is chatting with Bumi and Sokka in disbelief of how the king single-handedly retook Omashu, calling him the greatest earthbender of all time. Toph, who had awoken moments before, overhears their conversation and begins to mock Bumi’s opinion, thinking herself the superior earthbender. Bumi counters by calling her a little girl and stating that he has toenails that bend better than her. Sokka declares that the only way to prove who is more skilled is through an “earthbending rumble”.

Toph vs Bumi: The Fight

After introducing the two earthbenders, Sokka hits a handheld gong to signal the beginning of the duel. Even so, neither Toph nor Bumi attacks, insisting that the other make the first move. When Sokka commands them to fight, they relent and both begin earthbending at the same time.

Suki and Katara arrive at the scene a little later, and the waterbender proceeds to scold Sokka for pitting them against one another, noting that if they get hurt, they will be unable to aid in the battle against the Fire Nation. Toph and Bumi respond to Katara not by ceasing their battle, but by deriding each other with veiled insults.

Toph’s next move evokes an avalanche to fall upon Bumi; who shields himself from the falling boulders from an earthen shield. Their ferocity sends tremors throughout the campsite, interrupting Zuko and the rest of the White Lotus from their creative endeavors.

Fearful that the Fire Nation has invaded; they run to the source of the noise and are surprised to see no enemies. After Sokka explains the duel, Iroh begins to cheer for Bumi despite his nephew’s obvious irritation. Upon Pakku and Jeong Jeong’s objection to the battle; Sokka agrees that it may give away their location and calls the match to end with his gong, but Toph and Bumi are unable to hear it over their earthbending.

Toph vs Bumi Conclusion

In order to end the match; Piandao, Iroh, Zuko, Katara, Pakku, and Jeong Jeong use their skills to negate Toph vs Bumi bending. While everyone is walking away from the battlefield; Sokka tells Suki that, as referee, he has decided the match to have been a draw. Toph and Bumi are happy with the prospect of a rematch that Sokka says they should have later; but Zuko and Katara appear displeased.

Who Would Win A Real Fight

So, what if Toph vs Bumi was actually real. What would happen then? Who would win?

Well, the winner of Toph vs Bumi isn’t so readily clear. Both Bumi and Toph claim during their duel neither of them is using their full powers. This is likely true; considering the kind of damage both of them have proven to be capable of in the past.

Bumi brought down an entire city and army on his own, and with relative ease. But Toph is about as powerful, and she has a number of advantages Bumi lacks. Toph’s inherent ability to follow the earth around her; should give her a natural advantage in any duel with another Earthbender. Her Metalbending prowess also gives her an ability that Bumi really has no actual counter for.

The most important indicator of the battle; comes from the fact Toph hasn’t necessarily reached the peak of her abilities yet. Toph becomes a recurring presence in the fourth season of The Legend of Korra; after having spent the time-skip between the two shows being the chief of the Republic City police department.

She’s revealed to have become even more powerful; developing a connection with the entire world by using the roots of the Spirit Tree. Bumi’s powers might make for an interesting and difficult battle; but it’s unlikely Toph couldn’t keep up with Bumi – especially after she further developed her abilities.

Aang Costume: How To Dress Like Aang

So you’ve got cosplay ideas, and you’re not quite sure on what to go with or who to go as. Well, maybe you have and you’re eyeing an Aang costume. The problem is you have absolutely no idea how you should go about it, and now you’re stuck on what to do.

As always, we’ve got you covered with what to do about your Aang costume, so you don’t have to break a sweat. We’ve got costume guides on what you need and how you need to go about with the perfect Avatar costume.

In this article, we’ll be covering two of the most popular characters of the franchise. They are members of the original Team Avatar and perhaps are the two most cosplayed characters ever. Here’s your Aang Costume Guide to help you dress just like Avatar Aang.

Aang Costume: How To Dress Like Aang

Dressing like Aang might look like a lot of work; but it is an Aang costume that you can pull off easily with the right materials. So, before we get on with what you need in your Avatar costume wardrobe, let’s dive into the character himself so you can get a sense of his type of person. After all, how a person dresses usually determines what kind of person they are.

About Aang

Aang is a merrymaking kid, adventurous, and perhaps a little naive as well. Possessing keen respect for personal independence and life, he does not eat meat and is at times very reluctant to engage in conflict. Constantly craving the stimulation of new surroundings and people, he is often distracted and will take detours much to the annoyance of his friends and foes.

Discouraged by the weight of his responsibilities, Aang often longed for the simplicity of those people’s lives. This did not stop him from building an impressive collection of friends and contacts, spanning the four nations. A love for animals drew his attention to the different variations found in each region.

Even with a carefree facade, the weight of his responsibilities was burdensome to Aang. The reality of being the last Airbender left him without any realistic peers. He often felt alone. It was these struggles that pushed Aang to nurture his relationships with others as without them; he would be very much alone in his role.

These are all the items you’ll need to recreate the Aang costume, as seen from Seasons 1 to 2, and then in the latter parts of Season 3

Aang costume options can either be in partial clothing, as seen in the final battle with Fire Lord Ozai, or on the Day of the Invasion; or in full clothing, as seen in the rest of the series. Aang can be played by both male and female cosplayers, as he is a very versatile character. The bald cap will help to stimulate the monk haircut, so you don’t have to worry about cutting your hair.

If you’re going for a look with partial clothing then you have the choice of going shirtless and painting on his symbols or wearing just a sash over a bare chest. Then you can just paint on his head arrow symbol. Brown, wide-legged pants with either colored tights or tall boots will take care of what little clothing is required for this look.

Cool Avatar: Who is The Dopest Avatar?

The Avatar cycle is a complex yet diverse phenomenon in the Last Airbender series. Generally, the Avatar world is based on the theory of the cycle. Cool Avatars have come and gone and as this is based on a reincarnation concept, we see a lot of different personalities. The question is who is THE cool Avatar?

The good part about the cycle is their individuality and similarity in character where it counts as standing for justice and upholding balance. Cool Avatar incarnations have come and gone. This article aims to list the cool Avatar as far as the information we have been provided with and why they are so cool.

Avatar Wan

Let’s all admit that without Wan, the whole cycle in itself would not have become. It also takes a ton of bravery and courage to take on a challenge that seems next to being impossible.

You have to be very cool to even so much as consider doing what has never been done before. Wan thought differently and thus, Avatar cycle was birthed into existence.

Avatar Wan is at the top of our list for being the coolest Avatar ever. Without him, there is no cycle. It goes without saying that he is at the top of our list.

As the very first Avatar, it is expected that there would be a learning curve that might have put Wan little ways down on the totem pole for coolness. He earns his cool status for more than one reason. Aside from being the first Avatar, he is also one of the most powerful too. With no milestone to draw from at that time, Wan still managed to attain great power as a result of years upon years of mastering the elements.

Wan not only advanced in the bending arts more than any human ever had before in his time but he also learned to shape elements rather than merely blast them. This was a skill that told volumes of his mastery and finesse at doing this.

We can say he is the first and coolest Avatar due to his climactic battle with the evil spirit Vaatu where he showcased the full force of his abilities. Not only is Vaatu far more powerful than anything in existence, but Wan decisively beat him rather than ending with a bargain. I mean, let’s face it. He put him in an elemental cage and trapped him in the tree of time. That is as cool as it gets.

Avatar Korra

Avatar Korra is the second on the list for the next cool Avatar. What especially makes Korra so cool is not her stubbornness. It’s her refusal to give up. She constantly stayed strong despite all the adversaries that came her way. Even when she was in a wheelchair, she would not stop thinking about how to get stronger and overcome the obstacles.

One would expect maybe a much older Avatar to be the second on this list for cool Avatar. Korra not only gained mastery of the other three elements quite early but she also mastered it faster than most Avatar, second to Avatar Aang who despite spending time in the iceberg mastered between age twelve and thirteen. Korra was well on her way to being a fully realized Avatar at sixteen.

Another thing that makes her cool is she is also the second Avatar after Wan to have done several impossible things. We see in the Legend of Korra series how she undoes some of the mistakes Wan made. She is the first Avatar to master metal bending and the second Avatar to fight Vaatu in an even more powerful form. Korra is on the list for one of the cool Avatars of all time.

Avatar Kuruk

Another cool Avatar that often receives very little attention in the fandom is none other than Avatar Kuruk. At first, all we really know of Avatar Kuruk is that was really awesome water bender. We knew about Kuruk’s abilities at first when there was a flashback showcasing the tidal wave he both produces and surfs on.

We find out later on that there was more revealed about his backstory, fleshing out his arrogance as he traveled the Fire Nation winning Agni Kai duels and besting the Earth Kingdom’s greatest in contests of strength, but it was not until The Rise of Kyoshi that Kuruk’s best feat appeared. He is a strong Avatar who had an easy-going way about him although his arrogance and confidence left a little to be desired. He still makes the list for being a cool Avatar.

In the novel, Kuruk’s mentor tells the young Kyoshi about Kuruk first learning to master the Avatar State. He says Kuruk became “a human natural disaster” who unleashed elemental destruction on a grand scale.”

The first time he entered the Avatar State he went to an uninhabited atoll to practice, and destroyed the entire island by the time he snapped out of it.

Okay, destruction and human natural disaster aside, that has to be one of the coolest Avatar we’ve come across.

Avatar Yangchen

Avatar Yangchen is also another Avatar we may not be too familiar with. Little of her was seen in the series. She however has more roles in the games and comics. In the scene where we see her, she commands a gust of wind that sweeps over a yawning field of grass. The power is extraordinary in itself.

In the comics, she goes one further and enters combat with the colossal spirit, General Old Iron.

It was in this battle that we see her ability to surround herself in the same sphere of elements. This is a technique that Avatar Aang later uses against Fire Lord Ozai, and her advice to Aang to end Ozai’s life makes it clear that she was a deadly and formidable force.

Avatar Yangchen or ‘The Great Yangchen’ as she would come later come to be known as widely revered as not only the most powerful Avatar, but also the most compassionate. There has to be two very unique combinations that earn her a cool status.

Avatar Yangchen was in fact so very loved by the people of every nation that she became a sort of a deity.

Citizens of the Earth Kingdom would pray to her for protection and luck.

Her mastery of airbending was said to be so developed that she could even change the weather.

Avatar Aang

The list would be incomplete without mentioning our favorite Avatar of all. Avatar Aang. If serving one hundred years in an iceberg is not cool, then taking down the big bad has to do the trick. Aang warned his way into our hearts with his goofy but efficient problem-solving methods. It goes without saying that due to the rate at which he needed to master the elements, he is the weaker of the bunch but cool regardless.

Appa Yip Yip: The Call Used To Make Appa Fly

We all know about the beloved animal companion of the Avatar Aang. Appa is not just the animal companion of the team Avatar. But is also the sole surviving member of the Flying Bisons. And together both Appa and Aang are the last remnants of the once-great Air Nomads civilization. Appa has played a very huge role in whatever the Team Avatar has accomplished. Because not only is Appa the primary source of transportation for the team. But is also their savior in a lot of situations. Appa flies because of his ability to bend the air.

Appa’s Design And Conception

The shows’ creators describes Appa’s design as a crossover between buffaloes and manatees. He has one of the most likable and cute design among all the cartoons. He is a six-legged mammal and has a huge size but is till able to fly because of his ability to bend the air. The creators wanted to create something that will really click with Aang’s character and by the looks of the success and popularity that Appa’s design and concept received it looks that they have succeeded in their goal quite convincingly.

Appa’s Importance In The Series

Appa is not just the animal companion of Avatar Aang but is very rightly a full member of the Team Avatar. He has appeared in almost every episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender (TV Series) and in every subsequent comic book issue based on the series as well. Appa is not only the animal companion of The Avatar but is also the last of his kind.

The Air Nomads and their entire civilization including the Flying Bisons were destroyed by Firelord Sozin. Sozin knew that after the death of Avatar Roku, the next Avatar will be born in the Air Nomads as per the Avatar cycle. So he used the power derived from Sozin’s comet to completely wipe out the Air Nomads in hopes of killing the next Avatar as well. And when Aang woke up after a hundred years into the war and discovered that his civilization has been completely wiped off by the fire nation. He was left shattered with pain and grief. And he blamed himself for their killing as well.

The only entity that could understand Aang’s pain was Appa because like Aang, Appa too had lost his species of Flying Bisons as well. And they were the only members of the once great civilization of the Air Nomads that survived Sozin’s onslaught. This sense of pure loss and grief made them even more closer than even before.

Appa and Aang’s Relationship

The Flying Bisons were highly respected by the Air Nomads as they believed the Bisons to be the first Airbenders. Each Air Nomad received a partner baby bison when they are just children and learning to bend the air. And these Bisons are the lifelong companions of the Air Nomads. Additionally the flying Bisons were also thought to be the only way to reach the Temples of the Airbenders because of their isolated locations on top of mountains.

Like other Air Nomads, Aang too met Appa when he was choosing him to be his partner. Aang offered an apple to Appa which he accepted thus signaling a bonding of a lifetime between them. Appa has protected Aang several times whenever Aang and the rest of the team are cornered.

Appa also fought head-on with Nyla who tracked the team on behalf of Zuko. Nyla also had the ability to paralyze a person with the stung of her tongue. But Appa still fought with the animal and protected the team even getting stung a couple of times.

Flying Bisons can not fly naturally but have accomplished this feat by mastering the art of bending the air. But these Bisons still need to rest in between periods of flight as they get tired due to their heavier bodies. But when the team was in danger and was being tracked by Princess Azula. Appa flew for two days non-stop to protect the team Avatar which in itself is a testament to Appa’s stamina and his love fro Aang that made him fly for this much time without getting any rest.

The show aired on Nickelodeon for three full seasons. It began from February 2005 to July 2008. Avatar is set in a make-believe Asiatic-like world. In this world, some people are granted the ability to manipulate one of the four elements. These elements ate water, earth, fire, or air. Although how they do this never really becomes a topic of discussion but it is done with telekinetic variants of the Chinese martial arts known as “bending”.

The series is based on an individual who is the reincarnation of past selves that can bend all four elements. This reincarnation is known as the “Avatar”. They are responsible for maintaining harmony between the world’s four nations and serve as the bridge between the spirit world and the physical world.

The show is presented in a style that combines anime with American cartoons, and it also relies on the imagery of mainly East Asian culture, with some South Asian cultures. All of these make up the cultures that are found in the Avatar world.
