Prelude to The Buff Iroh

Several things led to the capture and imprisonment of Iroh. In reality, Iroh was a grand lotus of the secret society, the Order of the White Lotus. The Order of the White Lotus, which transcended the boundaries of the four nations. The organization has members spread far and wide across the world, even in desolate, remote villages of the Earth Kingdom.

Iroh and Zuko sought their aid in avoiding the bounty hunters Master Yu and Xin Fu, who temporarily decided to seek the two fugitives from the firebending nation rather than pursue the Avatar and Toph. However, on short notice, the Order managed to produce fake passports and other paperwork to smuggle Iroh and Zuko into Ba Sing Se.

They managed to get into Ba Sing Se to start new lives for themselves, which was the safest route for the duo to take.

With the help of the Order of the White Lotus’ Iroh and Zuko were able to make their way to Ba Sing Se, disguised as refugees. Once inside, a series of events occurred. Events like Iroh getting them jobs at a tea shop. While on a day off, Iroh spent the day shopping in the city.

During his travels, Iroh displayed his kindness and his skill as a teacher. He granted wisdom and help to all those he encountered during his day of shopping. He later held a small memorial service for Lu Ten, marking his late son’s birthday, and tearfully said he wished he could have helped Lu Ten and that he would ‘see him again.

After weeks in Ba Sing Se, Iroh was given a chance to run his own tea shop, but Zuko had other plans. After he became aware that the Avatar was in Ba Sing Se and had lost his Bison, he devised his own plans.

When Zuko attempted to capture Appa, Iroh confronted Zuko and told him rather bluntly to stop trying to live the life people said he had to live. In addition, Iroh convinced Zuko to give up his alias as the Blue Spirit. After this event, Zuko became ill as a result of his actions under Lake Laogai.

Iroh explained that they were incomplete conflicts with Zuko’s image of himself. Nevertheless, he cared for him like he would his own son. Through the ordeal, Iroh reassured Zuko that when he came out of his illness, he would be the “beautiful prince” he was always meant to be and remained confident that Zuko would be the one person to redeem the wrongdoings of the Fire Nation.

Soon after, he became better with a positive and chippy side. This was even much weirder than his actions under Lake Laogai. He was excited to run a tea shop and became even more hopeful.

Azula, planning a coup would put a stop to all that. When Azula offered Zuko a chance to reclaim his honor by helping take over the Earth Kingdom capital, he agreed. Iroh, taking on Azula and the Dai Li warriors, had to take on Zuko as well, much to his pain.

He would have laid down his life as he had to stand down. He was last seen defending the lifeless body of the Avatar as he ordered Katara to get him out. He gave them time to escape before he peacefully allowed himself to be captured. Iroh made eye contact with Zuko before turning away, expressing shame at his nephew’s decision.

Iroh Imprisoned So He Became Buff Iroh

After this, Iroh was imprisoned. He never said a word even as Zuko would secretly visit him in the tower where he was being held prisoner. After a few trials to visit, he eventually summoned the courage to go, after threatening the guard to keep silent about the visit.

Zuko tried severally to talk to his uncle, only to have Iroh turn away from him and say nothing. Zuko later brought food to Iroh and asked for his help. Iroh continued to remain silent, causing Zuko to become angry and storm out of the room. A single tear rolled down Iroh’s face. The pain took for him to behave that way towards his nephew, who was a son, was overwhelming.

Iroh Loved Zuko More Than His Own Father

While Iroh was in prison he became the buff Iroh, the Warden, Poon, came to give Iroh his food. Poon mocked am intentionally disheveled Iroh as he scrambled for the food after he had tossed it on the floor. He even scooped what had fallen onto the ground into his mouth. As soon as Poon was gone, he became more collected, wiped the stray hair out of his face, and calmly finished his meal in peace.

This time, he only ate out of the bowl. Iroh was shown again, calmly lying on the ground, deep in thought. Suddenly his eyes widened, and he began aggressively doing bent-knee sit-ups. This was the process that led him to be buff. He had been doing these exercises at every chance he got, which was almost every time.

Later, Iroh was still mocked and ridiculed by Poon while still feigning insanity, as was his habit at the prison. Nevertheless, Iroh continued to train in Poon’s absence. At this point, he is shown to have upgraded to straight-legged inverted sit-ups.

He kept up the facade of loneliness and desperation in front of Poon. Iroh was seen to be training whenever he was not being watched. He became very much able to perform difficult exercises, including inverted crunches, inverted push-ups, and one-handed pull-ups.

Still keeping his jailer unaware, Iroh had managed to recondition his body to a more intimidating form. He had even managed to lose his pronounced signature belly that we came to know him with. He slyly hid his belly by stuffing spare clothing under his robes. This was to dissuade his jailer and keep them in the dark. Buff Iroh is a surprise we were not ready for but delighted to have in the series.

Legacy Of Iroh’s Son

Iroh was so heartbroken by his son’s death that he abandoned the city’s siege, claiming that he and his men were exhausted from the extensive time away from home. However, when his brother, Prince Ozai, learned of Lu Ten’s death and Iroh’s subsequent actions, he petitioned their father; Fire Lord Azulon; to appoint him as heir to the throne; claiming that Lu Ten’s death meant that the royal bloodline would end with Iroh; since he had no other heir.

Azulon was enraged at such a request and saw fit to have Ozai’s firstborn, Prince Zuko, killed as punishment, but because of his mysterious death soon after, Ozai was able to take the throne. Although Iroh was the elder brother, he did not challenge Ozai’s claim, as he was too devastated by the death of both Lu Ten and Azulon. Moreover, he had lost his desire for power.

Iroh eventually managed to access the Spirit World, where he searched for Lu Ten, to no avail. Overall, the loss of his son and the experiences during his travels had a profound effect upon Iroh, whose personality shifted more toward a calm acceptance of life rather than continuing to participate in the Fire Nation’s war efforts.

The Death of Iroh’s Son Was Pivotal To The Story In The Last Airbender

The course of history in Avatar: The Last Airbender might have been different; if it wasn’t for the death of Uncle Iroh’s son, Prince Lu Ten. Throughout the series, Iroh acted as a wise and calming father figure to the angry exiled Prince Zuko, providing the positive influence that eventually led Zuko down a path of redemption. But Iroh wasn’t always the kindly older man that fans know from the series.

The Avatar season 2 episode “Zuko Alone” was key in revealing the story of how Iroh lost his son, and in turn, lost all interest in ruling as Fire Lord. Known as “The Dragon of the West,” Iroh led the famous 600-day Siege of Ba Sing Se, the Earth Kingdom’s nigh-impenetrable walled city.

During the siege, Iroh cultivated a great deal of admiration for Ba Sing Se; and later returned there under more peaceful circumstances. However, Ba Sing Se isn’t just important to Iroh because of its impressive defenses. It’s also the place where he lost his only son.

Lu Ten

Prince Lu Ten was a soldier in the Fire Nation army and died in the Hundred Year War; during the Siege of Ba Sing Se – though not necessarily in that particular campaign. A letter from Lu Ten to his father reads, “See you after we win the war,” implying that Lu Ten may actually have died fighting elsewhere in the Earth Kingdom, far away from his father. Unlike Ozai and Zuko, Iroh and Lu Ten were extremely close, and Iroh loved his son very deeply.

The death of Lu Ten killed Iroh’s appetite for war. He ended the siege and returned home to the Fire Nation with his exhausted army. Iroh’s father, Fire Lord Azulon, had also been killed, secretly poisoned by Zuko’s mother, Ursa, in a bargain for Zuko’s life.

Despite being the younger of the two brothers, Ozai had ascended to the throne of the Fire Nation, claiming that it had been Azulon’s final wish. Under other circumstances, Iroh might have challenged this claim; but in the wake of Lu Ten’s death, he had no interest in ruling.

How Things Would Have Been If Lu Ten Did Not Die

Had Iroh’s Son lived, things would have played out very differently in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Though Iroh was more enthusiastic about war before he lost his son; (in a letter to his family, he joked that they might not be able to see Ba Sing Se; if he burned it to the ground); he wasn’t anywhere close to being as evil as his brother. 

In a flashback, a young Azula disgustedly refers to her uncle as “his royal tea-loving kooky-ness,”; and other snapshots from the past show Uncle Iroh being affectionate; towards his son and sending gifts to his niece and nephew. It’s hard to picture Fire Lord Iroh carrying out Ozai’s plan of using Sozin’s Comet to destroy the Earth Kingdom.

Though it happened years before the series begins, the death of Iroh’s Son is one of the great tragedies of Avatar: The Last Airbender. In the season 2 episode “Tales of Ba Sing Se,”; Iroh offers help, comfort, and guidance to several boys and young men around the city; before arriving at his son’s grave to celebrate Lu Ten’s birthday.

The lullaby he sings, “Leaves from the Vine,” is particularly heartbreaking; because it reveals that from a young age, Iroh referred to his son as “little soldier boy,”; unwittingly setting him down the path that would eventually lead to his death.

Lu Ten’s Death Was A Bittersweet Event

Still, if the death of Iroh’s Son was a dark turning point for the Fire Nation, it was also the tragedy that made Iroh a better man – and Zuko as well. Before his nephew went hunting down the Avatar during the Siege of the North, Iroh told him that he had thought of Zuko as his own ever since Lu Ten’s death. And thanks to Iroh’s tempering influence, Zuko eventually became a far wiser and more noble Fire Lord than his father ever was.

Among the things they did on their travels, asides from Music night on the ship and occasional Pai Sho was Fire bending practice. Iroh became Zuko’s fire-bending teacher by default. He was a general named the Dragon of the West. Of course, it went without saying that he was more than qualified to be the boy’s teacher. 

Iroh offered him advice on how to defeat Zhao when the two faced off in an Agni Kai. At the end of the fight, Iroh stopped Zhao from harming Zuko from behind. He declared that his nephew had more honor than the commander despite being in exile.

Iroh made his affection for Zuko known when they traveled toward the Northern Water Tribe. He showed great sadness when he thought Zuko had died. However, he also doted over him like a father would, asking him to be careful and stay hidden. Iroh later confessed his fatherly nature to Zuko by telling him he thought of Zuko.

Despite Zuko’s claims that he would be fine on his quest to capture the Avatar, Iroh still looked genuinely worried. However, Zuko later tells Iroh that he will be fine in a more relaxed voice compared to the impatient one he had earlier in the conversation. 

When Zuko and Iroh traveled throughout the Earth Kingdom, they came to rely on each other even more as time went on. Even though Iroh and the young prince had to leave each other for a while, the love between them did not die or dwindle in the slightest. Finally, however, Zuko left him for a short time when he claimed that they no longer had anything to gain by traveling together. So much Iroh’s sadness as his nephew suggested this, he let him go. 

As we would later see, when Toph gave Iroh some advice as well, she suggested that Iroh tell Zuko that he also needs him too. This was one of the scenes that suggested that Iroh also needed the relationship between them. 

Iroh’s later encounter and talk with Toph helped us realize this. Iroh, during this meeting, according to Toph, Iroh would not stop talking about Zuko. Before he and Zuko reunited, Toph suggested that Iroh tell Zuko that he needed him. This caused Iroh to reflect for a few seconds. 

Resuming Zuko’s Fire Bending Lessons

Iroh resumed Zuko’s Fire bending training and taught him how to redirect lightning but would not shoot at Zuko due to the risks. Zuko, infuriated by this and wanting to master this new skill as soon as possible, decided to go to the highest peak he could find and hope lightning would strike him. He screamed at the sky, yelling that it’d always thrown everything it had at him.

Iroh later decided that he and Zuko would be safe from Azula’s reach if they fled to Ba Sing Se as refugees. They contemplated the pros and cons and decided that being refugees or criminals in the Earth Kingdom wasn’t bad.

During their stay in Ba Sing Se, Iroh and Zuko worked together in a tea shop in the city’s Lower Ring, and they lived together in an apartment. Despite Zuko’s obvious disdain for his life as a refugee, Iroh remained patient and constantly encouraged Zuko to look at the positives. For example, he went so far as to encourage Zuko to find a nice “lady friend” and prompted Zuko to go on his date with Jin. 

When Zuko learned that Aang was in the city looking for his bison, Iroh encouraged Zuko not to go looking for trouble. He explained that they finally had a life and something good there. The words of a tired older man who wanted to stop running and live in peace, but Zuko would not have it.

When Zuko tried to capture Appa, Iroh stopped him and insisted that he stop letting others control his destiny. He shouted at him, asking if this was a destiny he wanted or one that was chosen for him. Of course, this was him referring to his father. This encouraged Zuko to free Appa instead and abandon his identity as the Blue Spirit, whom he was dressed as during the capture.

The two returned to their apartment after Zuko had freed Appa, but almost immediately after arriving, Zuko collapsed to the floor with a terrible fever. Through his sickness, Iroh was by Zuko’s side day and night to comfort him and care for him, knowing that his spirit would be cleansed due to his better decisions. Zuko started taking on a more positive attitude after he regained his health, and the two were happy to work in their new tea shop in the Upper Ring.

Zuko and Iroh’s relationship was jeopardized during the events that eventually occurred. Azula captured Zuko and asked him to help her conquer the city, which would earn Zuko his father’s respect and possibly restore his honor.

Iroh vehemently insisted that Zuko must do what his heart told him and not give in to another’s demands. This failed when Zuko helped Azula defeat Aang and Katara and conquer Ba Sing Se. Iroh was later captured and was clearly ashamed of Zuko’s actions. Zuko regretted his actions almost immediately.

During his time in the Capital City Prison, Iroh initially refused to speak to Zuko, who called him a crazy old man. Then, in an attempt to calm Zuko’s inner turmoil, he revealed to Zuko his relationship with Avatar Roku and that he could help restore balance to the world.

He explained why good and evil were always in conflict inside of him. Zuko eventually realized this destiny and joined Aang in his fight against the Fire Nation but was too late to reconcile with Iroh, who had fled from prison during the solar eclipse. He originally went to the prison to help him escape but was too late. 

Iroh and Zuko finally reunited before the arrival of Sozin’s Comet, with a repentant Zuko begging Iroh for forgiveness. Iroh quickly forgave his nephew, stating that he was never angry with him but was sad that Zuko had lost his way. 

Zuko affirmed this but said Iroh helped him find it. Iroh later encouraged Zuko to take his place as Fire Lord, as he was the more suitable heir due to his reputation and what he had learned from his mistakes. He prompted Zuko to ask for help defeating Azula since she would not give up the throne easily. Zuko asked Katara, who accepted the request. 

Iroh’s guidance to his nephew gave Zuko the strength needed to defeat Azula and to claim his rightful place as Fire Lord and the desire to restore peace and unity to the divided world.

Zuko and Iroh were on much better terms when the Hundred Year War was over, and the two were happy to be serving their friend’s tea together in Ba Sing Se after the city’s liberation.

Zuko found himself teetering towards Iroh’s wisdom during the crises he faced during his tenure as Fire Lord. He, however, respected his uncle’s retirement wishes and left him undisturbed. However, Iroh was happy to see Zuko again and helped him recover after the events outside Yu Dao. 

Iroh reminded Zuko that despite being Fire Lord, he was still a stubborn boy and needed to remember that he always would have a home with him. Iroh was displeased by Zuko and Aang’s poor reactions toward his innovative tea, considering himself a man ahead of his time.

Iroh continued to help his nephew, including serving as interim Fire Lord and expressed his wish that Zuko would find greater peace by finding his mother. This was when the team and Azula again embarked on another journey to find Zuko and Azula’s mother, Ursa.

Iroh continued to fill this role while Zuko stayed with his mother upon returning to the Fire Nation Capital, taking the Fire Lord’s place at Yu Dao to commemorate the transition of government. In addition, Iroh was again happy to help his nephew during the insurrection of the New Ozai Society, putting himself in personal danger as a decoy.

Iroh and Zuko remained close for the rest of their lives, with Iroh eventually passing from the material world. However, Zuko still showed his love and respect for Iroh, eagerly questioning Korra about speaking with Iroh in the Spirit World. After learning about his uncle’s fate, Zuko reunited with Iroh for the first time in decades. The relationship between them is admirable.

Much like his father before him, Iroh was a renowned Fire Nation general during the Hundred Year War. Azulon had several exploits, and so did Iroh. Iroh enjoyed serving as a military commander and fully embraced his role as heir to the Fire Lord, later musing that his blood “boiled with desire” for power at the time.

His views at the time partially came from a desire to honor his father Azulon and grandfather Sozin. He felt like it was his duty to do this as both his father and grandfather had fully committed themselves to the war. In addition, Sozin was hell-bent on sharing the fire nation’s prosperity with the world.

As Iroh returned home from the siege, his father, Fire Lord Azulon, died under mysterious circumstances. Although Iroh was the Crown Prince, his younger brother Ozai was named Fire Lord, apparently at the dying request of Azulon himself. Having lost his desire for power after the death of Lu Ten, Iroh did not fight for his right to the throne, and Ozai took power without incident. Regardless, Iroh initially felt that not becoming the Fire Lord was a “tremendous failure.”

Ozai was the ruler of the Fire Nation during the final years of the Hundred Year War, reigning as Fire Lord from 95 to 100 AG. He is the younger brother of Iroh. He is the second son of Fire Lord Azulon and Ilah. He is also an uncle to Lu Ten and husband to Ursa, the father of Prince Zuko and Princess Azula.

He intended to burn down the Earth Kingdom, renounce the title of Fire Lord as he made Azula the New Fire Lord, and declared himself the Phoenix King, ruler of the world. However, before his plans could come to full realization, he was defeated by Avatar Aang.

Aang would not kill him as he upheld a principle not to do things as they had been done before. Instead, he used energy bending to remove his firebending abilities permanently.

After the end of the war and Zuko’s crowning, Ozai was sentenced to life in prison for several war crimes. However, he maintained a degree of influence on world politics through some of his loyal followers creating the “New Ozai Society” and his son, who occasionally sought advice from Ozai. As a result, the former Fire Lord was indirectly responsible for the failure of the Harmony Restoration Movement.

Although being unmatched fire benders in the fire nation, the two brothers, seconded by Jeong Jeong, who also showed great control, have been pitted together for a battle of who would win.

While fire bending that the recent generation of Fire benders have become used to is fueled by rage, Iroh sought a different and better method. He was able to learn this from the dragons. This makes his fire bending a lot more powerful than Ozai’s.

While Ozai is fueled by rage and seemingly no self-control as much as he might seem calm and calculating, Iroh’s brand of fire bending comes from somewhere deeper. As Aang demonstrated with Zhao, rage would make you lose without the opponent throwing a single blow.

Avatar: The Last Airbender and all of its fanfare cannot be talked about without considering the complex villains that the franchise showed to viewers. Not many villains are generally accepted by fans; especially as most of them are just evil with no character development whatsoever.

In this role, we finally get to see Mark Hamill Ozai literally voice the Dark Side. The Clone Wars animated series involves a plot with the ghost of Darth Bane. If that name does not ring any bells; well, he is the Sith Lord who mandated that there can only ever be two Sith Lords in existence.

Prior to his ruling, there could be more than two Sith Lords roaming around the galaxy, and his rule came to be known as the Rule of Two. Wherever evil Sith Lord souls go, Darth Vader would have been happy to know that his son by proxy did turn to the Dark Side; even if it happened technically in a galaxy and at a time long ago.

• Senator Stampington (Metalocalypse): Stampington appears frequently to inform the Tribunal of what Dethklok is doing. Mark Hamill also voices several members of the Tribunal itself.
• Skips (Regular Show): This yeti is an entertaining part of the show, even if he has his tragic story behind him. Mark Hamill provides voices for extra characters in the show as well.

Villains must be very striking, having much to do with the appearance; what stands out, differentiates, and stands out from the other villains is the personality and character that this one possesses, unique to the character and that can only be seen in him. Whether erratic and intelligent or brutal, you have to have the perfect mix of characteristics to form a being of terror for series.

And how the legend of Aang presents the story makes the main antagonist somehow neither Zuko nor Azula nor Ozai himself. The real antagonist in the legend of Aang is war, which has been destroying the balance of the world and corrupting all its inhabitants for 100 years. So it is no wonder that Ozai is shown to be so evil as the heir to this war.

Thus ends the story of Ozai, heir to a war he inevitably lost, a truly diabolical villain, a heartless genocide, a villain who made the bravest tremble only to end up imprisoned and die of old age. Mark Hamill will always be remembered for his flawless performance in this great series.

Aang’s Staff: The Original Glider

Aang’s original staff was a thin, long, wooden staff used by Aang not only as a weapon but also as a tool to manipulate air currents with airbending. With the staff, he sent powerful blasts of air toward his enemies by triggering the smaller wing on the staff as a miniature fan.

He could also use it as a glider, as it came with a pair of orange folding wings. It was hand-crafted by the monks of the Southern Air Temple. Aang was very attached to his staff, as he became angry when Toph used it like a nutcracker. Aang woke up several weeks following the fall of Ba Sing Se, afflicted from the injuries sustained by being shot in the back with lightning by Azula. 

Out of anger at his failure to defeat the Fire Nation princess at the Earth Kingdom capital, Aang took his glider to attack the Fire Nation head-on. Unfortunately, Aang was not strong enough and lost the glider at sea during a strong storm.

Aang survived the storm and was eventually found by his friends on Crescent Island, while the glider washed up on shore, damaged beyond repair. However, Aang knew that such a device would reveal his identity, and therefore he left it to burn in a nearby river of lava.

The History of the Airbending Staff

Prior to the Hundred Year War

As an Airbender, Kelsang had an Airbender staff of his own, which he took with him everywhere he went. For example, Kuruk once used Kelsang’s staff to fly from a meadow near Yaoping to the nearby mountain and battle a dark spirit.

The staff enabled Kelsang in 296 BG to escape the range of Fifth Nation pirate waterbenders at the South Pole and fly in pursuit of the pirate fleet and stop its advance. The wings of his staff were damaged in the process; however when the pirate leader Tagaka pierced them with a flurry of ice needles, which caused Kelsang to fall into the sea.

Kelsang’s staff was later repaired, and he used it to travel long distances in the Earth Kingdom in pursuit of Jianzhu, who had stolen Pengpeng, his flying bison. Catching up to his target, Kelsang used his staff to create a gale of wind to blast his friend away with the least amount of harm, though Jianzhu responded by earthbending a small piece of the earth through the windstorm, which hit Kelsang in the neck and killed him.

Jinpa also possessed an Airbender staff and made use of it in North Chung-Ling as the townsfolk asked the monk for his blessing. He created a wide breeze that swept over the fairground, declaring that all touched by the wind would succeed in business and health. He later used the staff to wedge apart the feuding Saowon and Keohso clan members as they threatened each other in the village square.

Monk Gyatso

A young Monk Gyatso used his staff to air surf during airbending training with Avatar Roku in the Southern Air Temple.

Sometime before 0 AG, Airbender staff were used by young Air Nomads during airbending training to take flight. Avatar Roku demonstrated several air loops to a young Gyatso, who, in turn, attempted to air surf. However, the young nomad fell off his glider, prompting Roku to catch him. With Gyatso lying atop his glider, Roku was unable to stabilize his glider staff, which resulted in both of them making a crash-landing to the ground.

During The Hundred Year War

Aang’s staff was a prominent tool during the Hundred Year War as well. Following his discovery in the Southern Water Tribe in 99 AG, Aang used his staff extensively during his travels. On several occasions, the young Avatar demonstrated the instrument’s capabilities as a weapon by using it to augment his bending.

Aang sent powerful blasts of wind toward his enemies; by triggering a small wing on his staff that acted similar to a miniature fan. He was also able to conjure compressed air swipes to deflect projectiles and attack enemies and generate vortexes by using the staff as a fixed point of origin.

The staff’s dual purpose as a functional glider also benefited Aang in many combat situations, as it provided him with an aerial advantage and a convenient means of escape.

The Replacement

Aang’s Staff gets a replacement after he loses the original one in Book 3. Aang traveled through the Fire Nation without a staff until the Day of Black Sun, when the invasion force arrived at the Black Cliffs. The mechanist created a brand new staff for Aang, which was considerably thinner than the staff used by Air Nomads. The wooden instrument also came with blue wings and fins deployed through spring-loaded mechanisms and a built-in snack compartment to provide the user with energy during flight.

Although he originally considered the feature trivial and frivolous, Aang eventually found it useful while flying alone to confront Fire Lord Ozai in the Fire Nation Capital.

Aang’s new staff functioned similarly to his old staff during the invasion, although it produced slightly less powerful blasts of air. However, the new instrument was considerably more resilient, as Aang could bend it back to fling himself forward and blast Azula with air.

After The Hundred Year War

During the Harmony Restoration Movement, Aang used his staff to fly with Katara over Yu Dao’s walls to avoid Fire Nation guards, who only allowed individuals to enter with Fire Lord Zuko’s permission. While searching for Ursa and the other members of Team Avatar, Aang used his staff to pursue Azula, who had jumped off Appa during flight. The staff was singed, however, when it was shot with fire by the young princess.

When Was Aang’s Staff Given To Him?

While he was young, Aang was presented with an Airbender staff handcrafted by the monks for his training. After overhearing a discussion between the monks, which culminated in Monk Pasang’s decision to send Aang to complete his training in the Eastern Air Temple, Aang ran away with Appa, bringing the Airbender staff among his possessions.

Aang’s Staff: Usage

The staff is a small unpowered device that requires airbending to use as a glider. To ride it – users grasp hold of the two leading spars of the lift wings and loop their feet over the spars of the stabilizers. Airbenders use their bending to manipulate the air around the staff and provide lift, as the staff generates only minimal lift by itself. Generally, airbenders will create a small burst of wind to lift themselves off the ground to get the staff into the air.

Despite its delicacy, an Airbender staff can be used as a regular quarterstaff; and employed to augment various defensive and offensive airbending maneuvers. As it extends the airbender’s reach, staff can create more powerful gusts of wind; due to the long arm motion used in performing a technique.

However, direct physical contact between the staff and an object is discouraged; due to the instrument’s aforementioned delicacy, as evidenced by Aang’s discomfort when Toph used his staff to crack nuts. When spun in front of the body, an Airbender staff will help create an air shield capable of deflecting direct firebending attacks. If lifted over the head, the spinning staff will allow for short vertical or hovering flight periods.

Skilled airbenders can also use airbending staff to perform variations of surfing. Gyatso demonstrated air surfing by standing on his glider and gliding through the air. Conversely, Aang traveled across the Mo Ce Sea by windsurfing, through his staff as a sail and a piece of driftwood as aboard. Although windsurfing requires less energy than flying, it is less efficient over longer distances.

What Is The Airbender Staff Made Of?

Aang’s staff is a delicate instrument that the Air Nomad monks handcraft. The staff’s shaft is made of a single piece of lightweight wood, which is hollowed down the center. Two wider, diamond-shaped pieces are located at the quarters near the top and bottom, into which a pair of brass rods are inserted.

These rods form the hinges for the fan-like wings, transforming the staff into a glider for flight. The mechanist’s variation of the staff is similar to that of its authentic counterpart, except with a rounded shaft; blue, rectangular wings, handlebars, and an added snack compartment.

Each wing is made of four thin shafts of the same kind of wood, fitted exactly to ascertain that they lie flush with the side when rotated back into the body of the staff. Across these shafts is a thick wax surface that gives the staff a similar appearance to a large fan.

There are four wings on the staff, two of which are located in the center that provides the principal lift; and two at the base that is used for stabilization. All four wings fold back into the body with a snap; and fit so precisely that the staff feels like a singular piece of wood.

The avatar dragon is the original practitioner of firebending, capable of breathing fire. The species demonstrated the true way of firebending to the Sun Warriors’ civilization, a precursor to the modern-day Fire Nation and Wan, the first Avatar. History Of The Avatar Dragon

In the year 9,832 BG, after Wan was banished from his village atop a fire lion turtle, he began his life among the spirits in the Spirit Wilds. He had been allowed to keep the power over fire from the creature. During his two-year stay, he came across a white avatar dragon, who performed intricate movements while flying through the sky. Mimicking these movements, Wan became the first known human to perform the Dancing Dragon.

Thousands of years after this encounter, between 12 BG and 0 AG, Aang and Kuzon scoured Fire Nation mountaintops in the hopes of finding the elusive avatar dragon species. Instead, they ended up saving an avatar dragon egg from poachers and giving it back to its mother.

During his time as Fire Lord, Sozin began hunting dragons as the ultimate sport throughout the Fire Nation. Anyone who managed to slay an avatar dragon earned the honorary title of “Dragon,”; and their talents as firebenders would become legendary. However, near the end of the Hundred Year War, dragons were thought to be extinct due to General Iroh’s claim that he had killed the final one. 

However, while searching for the last civilization of the Sun Warriors, Aang and Zuko discovered that two dragons, Ran and Shaw, were still alive, deducing that Iroh had lied to protect the species. The duo was made to promise that they would never reveal anything about the so-thought lost civilization and the dragons.

By 171 AG, a new dragon, Druk, a descendant of Ran and Shaw, had been born and later became Zuko’s mount. However, dragons were still a scarce sight, and very few people were still aware of their existence, as an average person was shocked to view a dragon firsthand.

Anatomy Of The Avatar Dragon

The avatar dragon is a large, horned reptile with a long, scaly body that ends in a thin tail. Its head is large compared to the rest of its body, and its bearded face is dominated by a wide, flat nose, golden, cat-like eyes, and long whiskers.

Significance of The Red and Blue Avatar Dragon

The red and blue dragons in Zuko’s nightmare gave him advice.

The symbolism of the red and blue dragons has appeared several times throughout Team Avatar’s adventures. Commonly, the red dragon represents honor and goodness, while the blue dragon represents seduction and evil.

While living in Ba Sing Se, Zuko dreamed that he was the Fire Lord and lacked his scar. Two dragons, one red and one blue, gave him advice. The blue dragon spoke with the voice of Azula, while the red dragon spoke with the voice of Iroh.

The blue dragon sought to harm Zuko, encouraging him to “sleep forever,” whereas the red dragon told him to “escape.” This dream was eventually brought to life; when Azula and Iroh gave Zuko different advice in the Crystal Catacombs of Ba Sing Se. Sozin’s Blue Avatar Dragon

The red and blue dragons represented the conflict between Avatar Roku and Fire Lord Sozin, with Roku’s dragon was red and Sozin’s blue. Roku and Sozin were initially friends, but they grew distant over time. Both dragons were present on Roku’s island when Sozin betrayed Roku and left his old friend to die in the volcanic eruption. Connection To Chinese Culture

Dragons in the World of Avatar draw inspiration from several different cultures. Aesthetically, they are heavily influenced by traditional Chinese depictions of dragons: long serpentine body, whiskers, fin-like ears, wild-looking eyes, canine snout, and the position and proportions of the horns and legs; one of the nine different types of Chinese dragons, also possess wings.

However, influences from other Asian cultures are also present, such as the dragons having four toes, which is typically a Korean trait.

In Chinese and other East Asian mythologies, dragons are traditionally portrayed as a chimerical mix of lizards, camels, goats, and bats. Still, their image seems refined in adaptation for the animation to the Western audience.

The ability to breathe fire and the presence of wings are characteristics more common in European dragons. Still, they are included in the dragons of the Avatar world as they are typical aspects of the western idea of dragons.

These features were also included to enhance the dragons’ connection to firebending, as Asian dragons are more closely associated with water than any other element, taking, for example, Yinglong, the only winged Chinese dragon.

Azula, the boiling rock, happened in the second part of the boiling rock saga. “The Boiling Rock, Part 2” is the 15th episode of Book Three: Fire of Avatar: The Last Airbender and the 55th of the overall series. It debuted on July 16, 2008.

After the failed attempt at escaping, due to Sokka strongly believing that his father, Chief Hakoda of the Southern Water Tribe, would be transported to the Boiling Rock prison, he is forced to devise a clever escape plan let go of the plan for this very purpose.

Sokka, Zuko, Suki, and Chit Sang devise a new plan for escaping the prison, involving Hakoda in their plans. They escape by creating a prison riot and kidnapping the warden. However, problems for the four arrive when Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee visit the prison.

As the plan teeters on the verge of failure, Mai helps Zuko and the others escape. Azula attacks Mai for her betrayal, but Ty Lee intervenes. Azula has them both imprisoned. The group returns to the Western Air Temple, and Hakoda is reunited with Katara.

Azula & The Boiling Rock Episode Backstory

We all know that Azula loves to ruin all the fun. It might as well be her specialty after Zuko and Sokka arrive at the Boiling Rock, the Rendezvous with Hakoda and Suki coincidentally. Sokka is more than overjoyed to see Suki at first but gets punched in the gut before expressing his happiness. She narrates her ordeal of how Azula captured her and the rest of the Kyoshi Warriors. She explains that they sent her to the Boiling Rock.

As the Warden would later brag, it is the fire nation’s most secure prison. Suki was sent to the Boiling Rock for being their leader. She assures Sokka that if his father were sent anywhere, it would have to be the Boiling Rock Prison.

Soon after, new prisoners are arriving at the Boiling Rock. Sokka is excited as he sees that it could be his chance to rescue his father. The prisoners are lined up to be introduced to the warden.

Meanwhile, Sokka is disguised as a guard in prison. When he is about to lose hope of seeing his father again, he arrives at the scene. He is glad to see his father Hakoda among the new arrivals. The warden explains the history of the Boiling Rock. He also doesn’t fail to mention that no one has ever escaped from it.

This is in an attempt to break the prisoner’s minds and damage any thoughts of escape that they might have harbored.

More Backstory

Hakoda defies the warden’s orders to look him in the eyes and trips him, which causes Sokka to snicker. The warden angrily orders the new arrivals to be taken from his sight and confined to their cells. Sokka later enters his father’s cell, still disguised as a guard, which causes Hakoda almost to attack him.

However, when Hakoda recognizes his son, he is overjoyed. Sokka explains to his father that it’s okay that he didn’t realize it was him as Hokoda remarks that he almost punched him in the gut. He tells him that he had that similar problem earlier, referring to the incident with Suki.

The warden then proceeds to interrogate the recaptured Chit Sang. He tries to grill him to find out who was helping him with the escape plan. He strongly believes that he and his friends are nowhere smart enough to think of such an intricate plan by themselves.

Chit Sang refuses to talk as he is not “a squealer.” The warden has his guards torture him by holding him upside down in his chair until he reveals the person’s identity. He tells the warden that the mastermind of the failed prison break is a guard.

Meanwhile, Sokka and his father devised a plan for Suki, Zuko, and themselves to escape the prison. Sokka makes his way to Zuko’s prison cell and tries to share the plan but is interrupted by two guards who take Zuko away.

Sokka feigns brutalizing Zuko alone inside his cell so he can reveal when they should next meet. Zuko is taken into another cell where he is confronted by his ex-girlfriend, Mai.

Meanwhile, the warden comes back to see whether Chit Sang will talk. Chit Sang reveals somebody did help him, although he only indicates someone disguised as a correctional officer. He lines up the guards to have Chit Sang identify the traitor. Sokka, completely sure that this was it for him, squints for the other shoe to drop. Chit Sang instead chooses to accuse a hot-headed guard that he doesn’t get along with.

Mai, still hurt that Zuko broke up with her, yells at him for leaving only a farewell letter as he left to join the Avatar. Zuko tries to explain he had to leave to save the Fire Nation, though Mai counters that he is betraying it. Finally, Zuko firmly tells her he does not see it that way, prompting Mai to cross her arms and look to the side.

Azula The People Person

At this point, Azula is entering the interrogation cell where the correctional officer is being grilled. She walks in on him frustratingly, saying it wasn’t him. The warden fills Azula in on the state of the prison. She instantly concludes that the guard wasn’t one of them and that the warden wasted his time. He is shocked and asks her why she seems so sure. Azula replies that this is because she is “a people person.”

Sokka manages to trick a guard into unlocking all of the cells during what was supposed to be lockdown while new arrivals are processed, letting the prisoners out into the yard.

He meets up with Suki and Hakoda outside. All they need to commence the escape plan is a riot. Trying to solve the problem quickly, Hakoda goes and pushes a big, tough-looking prisoner. However, much to his and their surprise, this plan fails. The tough-looking prisoner tells them that he had been working on anger management.
Chit Sang comes into view and surprises Sokka.

He tells him that he did not expose him since he knew that Sokka would come up with another escape plan, and he wants in again. Sokka points out that they are trying to escape right now and asks Chit Sang if he knows how to start a riot. Much to their surprise, he picks up a bystander and tells everyone, “Hey, RIOT!”

This causes every inmate to start fighting spontaneously. Even the prisoner Hakoda attempted to provoke, working on his anger issues, decided to stop controlling his anger. Finally, the warden appears and angrily demands to know how all the prisoners were released into the yard during the lockdown, prompting the guard who let them out to sneak away guiltily.

Mai is still interrogating Zuko, but a guard under the orders of her uncle appears to protect her during the riot. Zuko takes the chance, fire bends at the guard’s feet and rushes out of the room. The guard attempts to shield Mai from the fire, preventing her from reacting. Zuko locks her and the guard in the cell and escapes to the yard, where he meets up with the others.

When they fill Zuko in on the next phase of the plan to capture the warden, he asks to know how they hoped to achieve this. Sokka says he isn’t sure. Sokka and Zuko argue about capturing the warden, Suki takes the initiative and goes after him independently.

She runs on the heads of the rioting prisoners and guards and scales the yard’s walls with an amazing display of acrobatics. She disables the guards protecting the warden, ties him up, and gags him. They all meet up, the warden now their hostage, and make their way to the gondola.

Enter Azula: The Boiling Rock

Azula steps on the scene as they were much on their way into the gondola.

The group gets onto the gondola. Zuko, thinking ahead, decides to break the lever. Sokka, asking him why he did that when he didn’t know what it was for. Zuko told him that he’s making it so the guards can’t stop them. As they begin to ascend, Hakoda spots Azula and Ty Lee and asks Zuko who they are. Zuko says, “That’s my sister and her friends.”

He also states that they are a problem. Before the words completely leave his mouth, Ty Lee hops on the gondola line and starts running forward while Azula propels herself with fire, bending toward the gondola. Suki fights Ty Lee while Sokka and Zuko fight Azula on the top of the gondola. Suki says she has been waiting for the rematch for a long time.

The warden breaks free of his binding and yells at the guards to cut the line. The guards were shocked, wondering if he didn’t know that he would die. Finally, one of them says that he knows, and they begin to cut the line. Chit Sang quickly restrains the warden, but he is too late to prevent the warden’s orders from being relayed to the guards at the prison, who begin to cut the wire after some initial hesitation.

Soon as they realize what is going on, Azula and Ty Lee propel themselves onto another oncoming gondola on a separate cable. Azula tells her brother goodbye, assuming that he will fall to his death in the boiling lake. However, just as the guards are about to finish cutting, Mai steps in and saves them, incapacitating the guards.

She pins the guards with her daggers and kicks off the brake originally placed on the gondola line, causing it to move again. A guard asks her what she is doing, to which she replies, “Saving the jerk who dumped me.”

The Fall of Azula Began Here

She frees the line, causing them to make it out of the volcano, leaving the warden behind in the gondola. Hakoda gladly tells the warden that his record is finally broken. Zuko stops running as he figures that Azula must have come to the Boiling Rock somehow. He soon spots an uncrewed Fire Nation airship. The group uses it to escape off the island.

After this, Mai is detained by guards and brought forth to Azula. Azula asks for the guards to leave them alone. Ty Lee watches from the sidelines fearfully as Azula demands to know why Mai saved the escapees, knowing the consequences. Mai tells Azula she miscalculated, as she loves Zuko more than she fears Azula.

The two of them get in position to battle, but Ty Lee intervenes by blocking Azula’s chi, much to Mai and Azula’s surprise. Ty Lee and Mai try to escape but are quickly captured. Being dragged up by her guards, Azula calls them fools and orders the guards to let them rot in prison so she will never have to see their faces again.

The Avatar cycle is a complex yet diverse phenomenon in the Last Airbender series. Generally, the Avatar world is based on the theory of the cycle. She constantly stayed strong despite all the adversaries that came her way. Even when she was in a wheelchair, she would not stop thinking about how to get stronger and overcome the obstacles.

Korra not only gained mastery of the other three elements quite early but she also mastered it faster than most Avatar, second to Avatar Aang who despite spending time in the iceberg mastered between age twelve and thirteen. Korra was well on her way to being a fully realized Avatar at sixteen.

Another thing that makes her cool is she is also the second Avatar after Wan to have done several impossible things. We see in the Legend of Korra series how she undoes some of the mistakes Wan made. She is the first Avatar to master metal bending and the second Avatar to fight Vaatu in an even more powerful form. Korra is on the list for one of the cool Avatars of all time.

Another cool Avatar that often receives very little attention in the fandom is none other than Avatar Kuruk. At first, all we really know of Avatar Kuruk is that was really awesome water bender. We find out later on that there was more revealed about his backstory, fleshing out his arrogance as he traveled the Fire Nation winning Agni Kai duels and besting the Earth Kingdom’s greatest in contests of strength, but it was not until The Rise of Kyoshi that Kuruk’s best feat appeared. He is a strong Avatar who had an easy-going way about him although his arrogance and confidence left a little to be desired. He still makes the list for being a cool Avatar.

In the novel, Kuruk’s mentor tells the young Kyoshi about Kuruk first learning to master the Avatar State. He says Kuruk became “a human natural disaster” who unleashed elemental destruction on a grand scale.”

The first time he entered the Avatar State he went to an uninhabited atoll to practice, and destroyed the entire island by the time he snapped out of it.

Okay, destruction and human natural disaster aside, that has to be one of the coolest Avatar we’ve come across.

Avatar Yangchen

Avatar Yangchen is also another Avatar we may not be too familiar with. Little of her was seen in the series. She however has more roles in the games and comics. In the scene where we see her, she commands a gust of wind that sweeps over a yawning field of grass. The power is extraordinary in itself.

In the comics, she goes one further and enters combat with the colossal spirit, General Old Iron.

It was in this battle that we see her ability to surround herself in the same sphere of elements. This is a technique that Avatar Aang later uses against Fire Lord Ozai, and her advice to Aang to end Ozai’s life makes it clear that she was a deadly and formidable force.

Avatar Yangchen or ‘The Great Yangchen’ as she would come later come to be known as widely revered as not only the most powerful Avatar, but also the most compassionate. There has to be two very unique combinations that earn her a cool status.

Avatar Yangchen was in fact so very loved by the people of every nation that she became a sort of a deity.

Aang warned his way into our hearts with his goofy but efficient problem-solving methods. It goes without saying that due to the rate at which he needed to master the elements, he is the weaker of the bunch but cool regardless.
