The real antagonist in the legend of Aang is war, which has been destroying the balance of the world and corrupting all its inhabitants for 100 years. So it is no wonder that Ozai is shown to be so evil as the heir to this war.

Thus ends the story of Ozai, heir to a war he inevitably lost, a truly diabolical villain, a heartless genocide, a villain who made the bravest tremble only to end up imprisoned and die of old age. Mark Hamill will always be remembered for his flawless performance in this great series.

Aang’s Staff: The Original Glider

Aang’s original staff was a thin, long, wooden staff used by Aang not only as a weapon but also as a tool to manipulate air currents with airbending. With the staff, he sent powerful blasts of air toward his enemies by triggering the smaller wing on the staff as a miniature fan.

He could also use it as a glider, as it came with a pair of orange folding wings. It was hand-crafted by the monks of the Southern Air Temple. Aang was very attached to his staff, as he became angry when Toph used it like a nutcracker. Aang woke up several weeks following the fall of Ba Sing Se, afflicted from the injuries sustained by being shot in the back with lightning by Azula. 

Out of anger at his failure to defeat the Fire Nation princess at the Earth Kingdom capital, Aang took his glider to attack the Fire Nation head-on. Unfortunately, Aang was not strong enough and lost the glider at sea during a strong storm.

Aang survived the storm and was eventually found by his friends on Crescent Island, while the glider washed up on shore, damaged beyond repair. However, Aang knew that such a device would reveal his identity, and therefore he left it to burn in a nearby river of lava.

The History of the Airbending Staff

Prior to the Hundred Year War

As an Airbender, Kelsang had an Airbender staff of his own, which he took with him everywhere he went. For example, Kuruk once used Kelsang’s staff to fly from a meadow near Yaoping to the nearby mountain and battle a dark spirit.

The staff enabled Kelsang in 296 BG to escape the range of Fifth Nation pirate waterbenders at the South Pole and fly in pursuit of the pirate fleet and stop its advance. The wings of his staff were damaged in the process; however when the pirate leader Tagaka pierced them with a flurry of ice needles, which caused Kelsang to fall into the sea.

Kelsang’s staff was later repaired, and he used it to travel long distances in the Earth Kingdom in pursuit of Jianzhu, who had stolen Pengpeng, his flying bison. Catching up to his target, Kelsang used his staff to create a gale of wind to blast his friend away with the least amount of harm, though Jianzhu responded by earthbending a small piece of the earth through the windstorm, which hit Kelsang in the neck and killed him.

Jinpa also possessed an Airbender staff and made use of it in North Chung-Ling as the townsfolk asked the monk for his blessing. He created a wide breeze that swept over the fairground, declaring that all touched by the wind would succeed in business and health. He later used the staff to wedge apart the feuding Saowon and Keohso clan members as they threatened each other in the village square.

Monk Gyatso

A young Monk Gyatso used his staff to air surf during airbending training with Avatar Roku in the Southern Air Temple.

Sometime before 0 AG, Airbender staff were used by young Air Nomads during airbending training to take flight. Avatar Roku demonstrated several air loops to a young Gyatso, who, in turn, attempted to air surf. However, the young nomad fell off his glider, prompting Roku to catch him. With Gyatso lying atop his glider, Roku was unable to stabilize his glider staff, which resulted in both of them making a crash-landing to the ground.

During The Hundred Year War

Aang’s staff was a prominent tool during the Hundred Year War as well. Following his discovery in the Southern Water Tribe in 99 AG, Aang used his staff extensively during his travels. On several occasions, the young Avatar demonstrated the instrument’s capabilities as a weapon by using it to augment his bending.

Aang sent powerful blasts of wind toward his enemies; by triggering a small wing on his staff that acted similar to a miniature fan. He was also able to conjure compressed air swipes to deflect projectiles and attack enemies and generate vortexes by using the staff as a fixed point of origin.

The staff’s dual purpose as a functional glider also benefited Aang in many combat situations, as it provided him with an aerial advantage and a convenient means of escape.

The Replacement

Aang’s Staff gets a replacement after he loses the original one in Book 3. Aang traveled through the Fire Nation without a staff until the Day of Black Sun, when the invasion force arrived at the Black Cliffs. The mechanist created a brand new staff for Aang, which was considerably thinner than the staff used by Air Nomads. The wooden instrument also came with blue wings and fins deployed through spring-loaded mechanisms and a built-in snack compartment to provide the user with energy during flight.

Although he originally considered the feature trivial and frivolous, Aang eventually found it useful while flying alone to confront Fire Lord Ozai in the Fire Nation Capital.

Aang’s new staff functioned similarly to his old staff during the invasion, although it produced slightly less powerful blasts of air. However, the new instrument was considerably more resilient, as Aang could bend it back to fling himself forward and blast Azula with air.

After The Hundred Year War

During the Harmony Restoration Movement, Aang used his staff to fly with Katara over Yu Dao’s walls to avoid Fire Nation guards, who only allowed individuals to enter with Fire Lord Zuko’s permission. While searching for Ursa and the other members of Team Avatar, Aang used his staff to pursue Azula, who had jumped off Appa during flight. The staff was singed, however, when it was shot with fire by the young princess.

When Was Aang’s Staff Given To Him?

While he was young, Aang was presented with an Airbender staff handcrafted by the monks for his training. After overhearing a discussion between the monks, which culminated in Monk Pasang’s decision to send Aang to complete his training in the Eastern Air Temple, Aang ran away with Appa, bringing the Airbender staff among his possessions.

Aang’s Staff: Usage

The staff is a small unpowered device that requires airbending to use as a glider. To ride it – users grasp hold of the two leading spars of the lift wings and loop their feet over the spars of the stabilizers. Airbenders use their bending to manipulate the air around the staff and provide lift, as the staff generates only minimal lift by itself. Generally, airbenders will create a small burst of wind to lift themselves off the ground to get the staff into the air.

Despite its delicacy, an Airbender staff can be used as a regular quarterstaff; and employed to augment various defensive and offensive airbending maneuvers. As it extends the airbender’s reach, staff can create more powerful gusts of wind; due to the long arm motion used in performing a technique.

However, direct physical contact between the staff and an object is discouraged; due to the instrument’s aforementioned delicacy, as evidenced by Aang’s discomfort when Toph used his staff to crack nuts. When spun in front of the body, an Airbender staff will help create an air shield capable of deflecting direct firebending attacks. If lifted over the head, the spinning staff will allow for short vertical or hovering flight periods.

Skilled airbenders can also use airbending staff to perform variations of surfing. Gyatso demonstrated air surfing by standing on his glider and gliding through the air. Conversely, Aang traveled across the Mo Ce Sea by windsurfing, through his staff as a sail and a piece of driftwood as aboard. Although windsurfing requires less energy than flying, it is less efficient over longer distances.

What Is The Airbender Staff Made Of?

Aang’s staff is a delicate instrument that the Air Nomad monks handcraft. The staff’s shaft is made of a single piece of lightweight wood, which is hollowed down the center. Two wider, diamond-shaped pieces are located at the quarters near the top and bottom, into which a pair of brass rods are inserted.

These rods form the hinges for the fan-like wings, transforming the staff into a glider for flight. The mechanist’s variation of the staff is similar to that of its authentic counterpart, except with a rounded shaft; blue, rectangular wings, handlebars, and an added snack compartment.

Each wing is made of four thin shafts of the same kind of wood, fitted exactly to ascertain that they lie flush with the side when rotated back into the body of the staff. Across these shafts is a thick wax surface that gives the staff a similar appearance to a large fan.

There are four wings on the staff, two of which are located in the center that provides the principal lift; and two at the base that is used for stabilization. All four wings fold back into the body with a snap; and fit so precisely that the staff feels like a singular piece of wood.

History Of The Avatar Dragon

In the year 9,832 BG, after Wan was banished from his village atop a fire lion turtle, he began his life among the spirits in the Spirit Wilds. He had been allowed to keep the power over fire from the creature. During his two-year stay, he came across a white avatar dragon, who performed intricate movements while flying through the sky. Mimicking these movements, Wan became the first known human to perform the Dancing Dragon.

Thousands of years after this encounter, between 12 BG and 0 AG, Aang and Kuzon scoured Fire Nation mountaintops in the hopes of finding the elusive avatar dragon species. Instead, they ended up saving an avatar dragon egg from poachers and giving it back to its mother.

During his time as Fire Lord, Sozin began hunting dragons as the ultimate sport throughout the Fire Nation. Anyone who managed to slay an avatar dragon earned the honorary title of “Dragon,”; and their talents as firebenders would become legendary. However, near the end of the Hundred Year War, dragons were thought to be extinct due to General Iroh’s claim that he had killed the final one. 

However, while searching for the last civilization of the Sun Warriors, Aang and Zuko discovered that two dragons, Ran and Shaw, were still alive, deducing that Iroh had lied to protect the species. The duo was made to promise that they would never reveal anything about the so-thought lost civilization and the dragons.

By 171 AG, a new dragon, Druk, a descendant of Ran and Shaw, had been born and later became Zuko’s mount. However, dragons were still a scarce sight, and very few people were still aware of their existence, as an average person was shocked to view a dragon firsthand.

Significance of The Red and Blue Avatar Dragon

The red and blue dragons in Zuko’s nightmare gave him advice.

The symbolism of the red and blue dragons has appeared several times throughout Team Avatar’s adventures. Commonly, the red dragon represents honor and goodness, while the blue dragon represents seduction and evil.

Sozin’s Blue Avatar Dragon

The red and blue dragons represented the conflict between Avatar Roku and Fire Lord Sozin, with Roku’s dragon was red and Sozin’s blue. Roku and Sozin were initially friends, but they grew distant over time. Both dragons were present on Roku’s island when Sozin betrayed Roku and left his old friend to die in the volcanic eruption. Connection To Chinese Culture

Dragons in the World of Avatar draw inspiration from several different cultures. Aesthetically, they are heavily influenced by traditional Chinese depictions of dragons: long serpentine body, whiskers, fin-like ears, wild-looking eyes, canine snout, and the position and proportions of the horns and legs; one of the nine different types of Chinese dragons, also possess wings.

However, influences from other Asian cultures are also present, such as the dragons having four toes, which is typically a Korean trait.

In Chinese and other East Asian mythologies, dragons are traditionally portrayed as a chimerical mix of lizards, camels, goats, and bats. Still, their image seems refined in adaptation for the animation to the Western audience.

The ability to breathe fire and the presence of wings are characteristics more common in European dragons. Still, they are included in the dragons of the Avatar world as they are typical aspects of the western idea of dragons.

These features were also included to enhance the dragons’ connection to firebending, as Asian dragons are more closely associated with water than any other element, taking, for example, Yinglong, the only winged Chinese dragon.

After the failed attempt at escaping, due to Sokka strongly believing that his father, Chief Hakoda of the Southern Water Tribe, would be transported to the Boiling Rock prison, he is forced to devise a clever escape plan let go of the plan for this very purpose.

Sokka, Zuko, Suki, and Chit Sang devise a new plan for escaping the prison, involving Hakoda in their plans. They escape by creating a prison riot and kidnapping the warden. However, problems for the four arrive when Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee visit the prison.

As the plan teeters on the verge of failure, Mai helps Zuko and the others escape. Azula attacks Mai for her betrayal, but Ty Lee intervenes. Azula has them both imprisoned. The group returns to the Western Air Temple, and Hakoda is reunited with Katara.

Azula & The Boiling Rock Episode Backstory

We all know that Azula loves to ruin all the fun. It might as well be her specialty after Zuko and Sokka arrive at the Boiling Rock, the Rendezvous with Hakoda and Suki coincidentally. Sokka is more than overjoyed to see Suki at first but gets punched in the gut before expressing his happiness. She narrates her ordeal of how Azula captured her and the rest of the Kyoshi Warriors. She explains that they sent her to the Boiling Rock.

As the Warden would later brag, it is the fire nation’s most secure prison. Suki was sent to the Boiling Rock for being their leader. She assures Sokka that if his father were sent anywhere, it would have to be the Boiling Rock Prison.

Soon after, new prisoners are arriving at the Boiling Rock. Sokka is excited as he sees that it could be his chance to rescue his father. The prisoners are lined up to be introduced to the warden.

Meanwhile, Sokka is disguised as a guard in prison. When he is about to lose hope of seeing his father again, he arrives at the scene. He is glad to see his father Hakoda among the new arrivals. The warden explains the history of the Boiling Rock. He also doesn’t fail to mention that no one has ever escaped from it.

This is in an attempt to break the prisoner’s minds and damage any thoughts of escape that they might have harbored.

More Backstory

Hakoda defies the warden’s orders to look him in the eyes and trips him, which causes Sokka to snicker. The warden angrily orders the new arrivals to be taken from his sight and confined to their cells. Sokka later enters his father’s cell, still disguised as a guard, which causes Hakoda almost to attack him.

However, when Hakoda recognizes his son, he is overjoyed. Sokka explains to his father that it’s okay that he didn’t realize it was him as Hokoda remarks that he almost punched him in the gut. He tells him that he had that similar problem earlier, referring to the incident with Suki.

The warden then proceeds to interrogate the recaptured Chit Sang. He tries to grill him to find out who was helping him with the escape plan. He strongly believes that he and his friends are nowhere smart enough to think of such an intricate plan by themselves.

Chit Sang refuses to talk as he is not “a squealer.” The warden has his guards torture him by holding him upside down in his chair until he reveals the person’s identity. He tells the warden that the mastermind of the failed prison break is a guard.

Meanwhile, Sokka and his father devised a plan for Suki, Zuko, and themselves to escape the prison. Sokka makes his way to Zuko’s prison cell and tries to share the plan but is interrupted by two guards who take Zuko away.

Sokka feigns brutalizing Zuko alone inside his cell so he can reveal when they should next meet. Zuko is taken into another cell where he is confronted by his ex-girlfriend, Mai.

Meanwhile, the warden comes back to see whether Chit Sang will talk. Chit Sang reveals somebody did help him, although he only indicates someone disguised as a correctional officer. He lines up the guards to have Chit Sang identify the traitor. Sokka, completely sure that this was it for him, squints for the other shoe to drop. Chit Sang instead chooses to accuse a hot-headed guard that he doesn’t get along with.

Mai, still hurt that Zuko broke up with her, yells at him for leaving only a farewell letter as he left to join the Avatar. Zuko tries to explain he had to leave to save the Fire Nation, though Mai counters that he is betraying it. Finally, Zuko firmly tells her he does not see it that way, prompting Mai to cross her arms and look to the side.

Azula The People Person

At this point, Azula is entering the interrogation cell where the correctional officer is being grilled. She walks in on him frustratingly, saying it wasn’t him. The warden fills Azula in on the state of the prison. She instantly concludes that the guard wasn’t one of them and that the warden wasted his time. He is shocked and asks her why she seems so sure. Azula replies that this is because she is “a people person.”

Sokka manages to trick a guard into unlocking all of the cells during what was supposed to be lockdown while new arrivals are processed, letting the prisoners out into the yard.

He meets up with Suki and Hakoda outside. All they need to commence the escape plan is a riot. Trying to solve the problem quickly, Hakoda goes and pushes a big, tough-looking prisoner. However, much to his and their surprise, this plan fails. The tough-looking prisoner tells them that he had been working on anger management.
Chit Sang comes into view and surprises Sokka.

He tells him that he did not expose him since he knew that Sokka would come up with another escape plan, and he wants in again. Sokka points out that they are trying to escape right now and asks Chit Sang if he knows how to start a riot. Much to their surprise, he picks up a bystander and tells everyone, “Hey, RIOT!”

This causes every inmate to start fighting spontaneously. Even the prisoner Hakoda attempted to provoke, working on his anger issues, decided to stop controlling his anger. Finally, the warden appears and angrily demands to know how all the prisoners were released into the yard during the lockdown, prompting the guard who let them out to sneak away guiltily.

Mai is still interrogating Zuko, but a guard under the orders of her uncle appears to protect her during the riot. Zuko takes the chance, fire bends at the guard’s feet and rushes out of the room. The guard attempts to shield Mai from the fire, preventing her from reacting. Zuko locks her and the guard in the cell and escapes to the yard, where he meets up with the others.

When they fill Zuko in on the next phase of the plan to capture the warden, he asks to know how they hoped to achieve this. Sokka says he isn’t sure. Sokka and Zuko argue about capturing the warden, Suki takes the initiative and goes after him independently.

She runs on the heads of the rioting prisoners and guards and scales the yard’s walls with an amazing display of acrobatics. She disables the guards protecting the warden, ties him up, and gags him. They all meet up, the warden now their hostage, and make their way to the gondola.

Enter Azula: The Boiling Rock

Azula steps on the scene as they were much on their way into the gondola.

The group gets onto the gondola. Zuko, thinking ahead, decides to break the lever. Sokka, asking him why he did that when he didn’t know what it was for. Zuko told him that he’s making it so the guards can’t stop them. As they begin to ascend, Hakoda spots Azula and Ty Lee and asks Zuko who they are. Zuko says, “That’s my sister and her friends.”

He also states that they are a problem. Before the words completely leave his mouth, Ty Lee hops on the gondola line and starts running forward while Azula propels herself with fire, bending toward the gondola. Suki fights Ty Lee while Sokka and Zuko fight Azula on the top of the gondola. Suki says she has been waiting for the rematch for a long time.

The warden breaks free of his binding and yells at the guards to cut the line. The guards were shocked, wondering if he didn’t know that he would die. Finally, one of them says that he knows, and they begin to cut the line. Chit Sang quickly restrains the warden, but he is too late to prevent the warden’s orders from being relayed to the guards at the prison, who begin to cut the wire after some initial hesitation.

Soon as they realize what is going on, Azula and Ty Lee propel themselves onto another oncoming gondola on a separate cable. Azula tells her brother goodbye, assuming that he will fall to his death in the boiling lake. However, just as the guards are about to finish cutting, Mai steps in and saves them, incapacitating the guards.

She pins the guards with her daggers and kicks off the brake originally placed on the gondola line, causing it to move again. A guard asks her what she is doing, to which she replies, “Saving the jerk who dumped me.”

The Fall of Azula Began Here

She frees the line, causing them to make it out of the volcano, leaving the warden behind in the gondola. Hakoda gladly tells the warden that his record is finally broken. Zuko stops running as he figures that Azula must have come to the Boiling Rock somehow. He soon spots an uncrewed Fire Nation airship. The group uses it to escape off the island.

After this, Mai is detained by guards and brought forth to Azula. Azula asks for the guards to leave them alone. Ty Lee watches from the sidelines fearfully as Azula demands to know why Mai saved the escapees, knowing the consequences. Mai tells Azula she miscalculated, as she loves Zuko more than she fears Azula.

The two of them get in position to battle, but Ty Lee intervenes by blocking Azula’s chi, much to Mai and Azula’s surprise. Ty Lee and Mai try to escape but are quickly captured. Being dragged up by her guards, Azula calls them fools and orders the guards to let them rot in prison so she will never have to see their faces again.

The Avatar cycle is a complex yet diverse phenomenon in the Last Airbender series. Generally, the Avatar world is based on the theory of the cycle. As the very first Avatar, it is expected that there would be a learning curve that might have put Wan little ways down on the totem pole for coolness. He earns his cool status for more than one reason. Aside from being the first Avatar, he is also one of the most powerful too. Avatar Korra is the second on the list for the next cool Avatar. What especially makes Korra so cool is not her stubbornness. It’s her refusal to give up. She constantly stayed strong despite all the adversaries that came her way. Even when she was in a wheelchair, she would not stop thinking about how to get stronger and overcome the obstacles.

One would expect maybe a much older Avatar to be the second on this list for cool Avatar. Korra not only gained mastery of the other three elements quite early but she also mastered it faster than most Avatar, second to Avatar Aang who despite spending time in the iceberg mastered between age twelve and thirteen. Korra was well on her way to being a fully realized Avatar at sixteen.

Another thing that makes her cool is she is also the second Avatar after Wan to have done several impossible things. We see in the Legend of Korra series how she undoes some of the mistakes Wan made. She is the first Avatar to master metal bending and the second Avatar to fight Vaatu in an even more powerful form. Korra is on the list for one of the cool Avatars of all time.

Avatar Kuruk

Another cool Avatar that often receives very little attention in the fandom is none other than Avatar Kuruk. At first, all we really know of Avatar Kuruk is that was really awesome water bender. We knew about Kuruk’s abilities at first when there was a flashback showcasing the tidal wave he both produces and surfs on.

We find out later on that there was more revealed about his backstory, fleshing out his arrogance as he traveled the Fire Nation winning Agni Kai duels and besting the Earth Kingdom’s greatest in contests of strength, but it was not until The Rise of Kyoshi that Kuruk’s best feat appeared. He is a strong Avatar who had an easy-going way about him although his arrogance and confidence left a little to be desired. He still makes the list for being a cool Avatar.

In the novel, Kuruk’s mentor tells the young Kyoshi about Kuruk first learning to master the Avatar State. He says Kuruk became “a human natural disaster” who unleashed elemental destruction on a grand scale.”

The first time he entered the Avatar State he went to an uninhabited atoll to practice, and destroyed the entire island by the time he snapped out of it.

Okay, destruction and human natural disaster aside, that has to be one of the coolest Avatar we’ve come across.

Avatar Yangchen

Avatar Yangchen is also another Avatar we may not be too familiar with. Little of her was seen in the series. She however has more roles in the games and comics. In the scene where we see her, she commands a gust of wind that sweeps over a yawning field of grass. The power is extraordinary in itself.

In the comics, she goes one further and enters combat with the colossal spirit, General Old Iron.

It was in this battle that we see her ability to surround herself in the same sphere of elements. This is a technique that Avatar Aang later uses against Fire Lord Ozai, and her advice to Aang to end Ozai’s life makes it clear that she was a deadly and formidable force.

Avatar Yangchen or ‘The Great Yangchen’ as she would come later come to be known as widely revered as not only the most powerful Avatar, but also the most compassionate. There has to be two very unique combinations that earn her a cool status.

Avatar Yangchen was in fact so very loved by the people of every nation that she became a sort of a deity.

Citizens of the Earth Kingdom would pray to her for protection and luck.

Her mastery of airbending was said to be so developed that she could even change the weather.

Avatar Aang

The list would be incomplete without mentioning our favorite Avatar of all. Avatar Aang. If serving one hundred years in an iceberg is not cool, then taking down the big bad has to do the trick. Aang warned his way into our hearts with his goofy but efficient problem-solving methods. It goes without saying that due to the rate at which he needed to master the elements, he is the weaker of the bunch but cool regardless.

Anyone who knows good television could easily tell you that Avatar: The Last Airbender was a show ahead of its time. Sure, you might want to argue that Azula was briefly the Fire Lord after her father Ozai proclaimed himself as the phoenix king. Zuko’s Daughter’s Role In Book Four Of The Legend Of Korra Was Supposed To Be Larger Role

Book Four is one of the most intense chapters in Korra’s journey, and it was definitely an entertaining watch for the most part. However, it did come at the cost of some side characters not getting as much screen time as they should’ve.
