Appa Yip Yip: The Call Used To Make Appa Fly

We all know about the beloved animal companion of the Avatar Aang. Appa is not just the animal companion of the team Avatar. But is also the sole surviving member of the Flying Bisons. And together both Appa and Aang are the last remnants of the once-great Air Nomads civilization. Appa has played a very huge role in whatever the Team Avatar has accomplished. Because not only is Appa the primary source of transportation for the team. But is also their savior in a lot of situations. Appa flies because of his ability to bend the air.

Appa’s Design And Conception

The shows’ creators describes Appa’s design as a crossover between buffaloes and manatees. He has one of the most likable and cute design among all the cartoons. He is a six-legged mammal and has a huge size but is till able to fly because of his ability to bend the air. The creators wanted to create something that will really click with Aang’s character and by the looks of the success and popularity that Appa’s design and concept received it looks that they have succeeded in their goal quite convincingly.

Appa’s Importance In The Series

Appa is not just the animal companion of Avatar Aang but is very rightly a full member of the Team Avatar. He has appeared in almost every episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender (TV Series) and in every subsequent comic book issue based on the series as well. Appa is not only the animal companion of The Avatar but is also the last of his kind.

The Air Nomads and their entire civilization including the Flying Bisons were destroyed by Firelord Sozin. Sozin knew that after the death of Avatar Roku, the next Avatar will be born in the Air Nomads as per the Avatar cycle. So he used the power derived from Sozin’s comet to completely wipe out the Air Nomads in hopes of killing the next Avatar as well. And when Aang woke up after a hundred years into the war and discovered that his civilization has been completely wiped off by the fire nation. He was left shattered with pain and grief. And he blamed himself for their killing as well.

The only entity that could understand Aang’s pain was Appa because like Aang, Appa too had lost his species of Flying Bisons as well. And they were the only members of the once great civilization of the Air Nomads that survived Sozin’s onslaught. This sense of pure loss and grief made them even more closer than even before.

Appa and Aang’s Relationship

The Flying Bisons were highly respected by the Air Nomads as they believed the Bisons to be the first Airbenders. Each Air Nomad received a partner baby bison when they are just children and learning to bend the air. And these Bisons are the lifelong companions of the Air Nomads. Additionally the flying Bisons were also thought to be the only way to reach the Temples of the Airbenders because of their isolated locations on top of mountains.

Like other Air Nomads, Aang too met Appa when he was choosing him to be his partner. Aang offered an apple to Appa which he accepted thus signaling a bonding of a lifetime between them. Appa has protected Aang several times whenever Aang and the rest of the team are cornered.

Appa also fought head-on with Nyla who tracked the team on behalf of Zuko. Nyla also had the ability to paralyze a person with the stung of her tongue. But Appa still fought with the animal and protected the team even getting stung a couple of times.

Flying Bisons can not fly naturally but have accomplished this feat by mastering the art of bending the air. But these Bisons still need to rest in between periods of flight as they get tired due to their heavier bodies. But when the team was in danger and was being tracked by Princess Azula. Appa flew for two days non-stop to protect the team Avatar which in itself is a testament to Appa’s stamina and his love fro Aang that made him fly for this much time without getting any rest.

The show aired on Nickelodeon for three full seasons. It began from February 2005 to July 2008. Avatar is set in a make-believe Asiatic-like world. In this world, some people are granted the ability to manipulate one of the four elements. These elements ate water, earth, fire, or air. Although how they do this never really becomes a topic of discussion but it is done with telekinetic variants of the Chinese martial arts known as “bending”.

The series is based on an individual who is the reincarnation of past selves that can bend all four elements. This reincarnation is known as the “Avatar”. They are responsible for maintaining harmony between the world’s four nations and serve as the bridge between the spirit world and the physical world.

The show is presented in a style that combines anime with American cartoons, and it also relies on the imagery of mainly East Asian culture, with some South Asian cultures. All of these make up the cultures that are found in the Avatar world.

Korra vs Aang: The Ultimate Comparison

Korra vs Aang is one of the most interesting comparisons ever. We have seen both of these master Avatars in their respective shows. Aang and Korra displayed their respective skills in their own dedicated TV shows. But a comparison between both these Avatars is really not a justified comparison.

Because we all know that the new Avatar always improves on his past selves. Then likely according to this rule, Korra is definitely the stronger one. Both of these great Avatars were separated by quite a time. And during this time the civilization grew at a rapid pace.

Aang existed in a world where four civilizations were dominant. Although sandbenders and swampbenders did exist in Aang’s time. They were relatively isolated from the rest of the world. But after Aang formed the United Republic of Nations.

The population there inter-married among different civilizations giving rise to stronger individuals. As republic city became one of the most populous cities among the four nations it also had its fair share of problems. At Aang’s time the four nations did not mix up too much but in Republic City, all nations interacted on a daily basis.

This interaction allowed the benders to develop new and innovative techniques to take on others. Even the non-benders worked out ways to neutralize the benders because of this daily interaction. The new technological advances at the time of Korra were not even considered to be possible at Aang’s time.

Even the age of both these Avatars when they were active is not evenly matched. So in our opinion, this comparison is not fair. But for this article, we will still list the strengths of both these Avatars and try to conclude the victor among them.

Aang’s Strengths

In this section, we will list some of the strengths that Aang possesses that make him more powerful than Korra.

Aang’s Airbending

The first strength of Aang is that he was the youngest Airbending master of his time. He achieved this feat at the very green age of just 12 years old. He even invented the Air scooter himself at this young age which made him eligible for the title of Airbending Master. When he was discovered after a hundred years by Katara and Sokka. He was already an Airbending master. This Airbending superiority will likely tilt the balance in favor of Aang in any likely scenario of Korra vs Aang.

Discipline

Aang is more disciplined than Korra in all respects. He knows how to control his emotions and does not allow his feelings to cloud his judgment. Even when he found out about the genocide of his people Aang controlled his emotions. Whenever he visited any Air Temple he was visibly distressed because of their current condition as compared to when he visited the temples a hundred years earlier.

A part of Aang also blamed himself for this genocide. As being the Avatar it was his duty to maintain the balance but he ran away from his duties. And even after such a huge loss he never allowed his feelings to take a hold of him.

He did what he had to do to defeat Firelord Max Ozai carrying the weight of such a huge loss. Whereas Korra is the opposite of Aang in this regard. She always allows her feelings to cloud her judgment and because of this steadfast nature of Korra, she always gets into trouble.

Spirituality

Aang is more connected to his spiritual center as compared to Korra. Because of his upbringing in an Air Temple, Aang had better understanding of spirituality. Therefore he also understood the power he possessed in the form of Raava.

It was because of this strong connection to his spiritual center Aang was able to control his Avatar self and stop himself from killing Max Ozai. All his past selves offered him advice that he must do what is necessary but Aang found out another way and took Ozai’s bending ability away.

But Korra is more susceptible to her feelings and more likely to be blinded by anger. This was also evident during her Airbending training as well.

Korra’s Strengths

In this section, we will list some of the strengths that Korra has which make her stronger than Aang.

Physical Strength

Korra is older than Aang in The Legend of Korra. As a result, she has had more training and is in peak physical form. She also has the ability to take punches and then go after her enemy again. We never got to see this side of Aang is Avatar: The Last Airbender as he was just twelve years old. This physical strength allows Korra to fight for prolonged durations without a sign of fatigue.

Metal Bending

Korra and Aang both do not possess any mastery of the bending of rare elements. But Korra becomes a master Metalbender when she takes on Kavira. Kavira was a master Metalbender who wanted to form the Earth Nation empire by taking over all the land where Fire Nation colonies were developed. She also claimed that Avatar Aang stole Earth Nation’s Land by forming the United Republic of Nations.

So in order to defeat her, Korra also mastered the art of metal bending in addition to mastering the four core elements as well. This rare talent is sure to tilt the odds in Korra’s favor in the case of Korra vs Aang fight.

Conclusion

Both Korra and Aang are extremely talented Avatars of their times. But in our opinion, Aang is the more powerful one among the two. Because not only does he know how to use the raw power of Avatar form. But he also knows when to use it.

Aang will only use his powers as a last resort and will try to avoid it. This makes Aang more powerful as he chooses not to use his power to defeat his opponents physically but he also tries to subdue them in all respects by offering them a fair chance to avoid the fight.

Even in case of a fight, Aang’s decisions have always been a little unorthodox as by the avatar standards. Every past self of Aang advised him to kill Ozai but Aang still found another way making him someone who can follow his own path as well.

One can beg to differ and declare Korra as the winner because of the level of skill she shows in The Legend of Korra. But all of this grandeur of her show was because of the success of its predecessor. As a sequel, Korra’s show had more budget and public interest as well.

This prompted the creators to develop something that was even more appealing than Avatar: The Last Airbender. If Aang and Korra existed in the same universe or if Aang’s show is remade now it will definitely be grander than The Legend Of Korra with Aang emerging out as the victor in any Korra vs Aang competition.

Bumi vs. Kya vs. Tenzin: Understanding The Avatar Sibling Rivalry

Sibling rivalry is a huge problem for everyone, but what do you do when your father was the savior of the world. Bumi vs. Kya vs. Tenzin were the three very different children that Aang and Katara had offscreen following the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

It’s always interesting to see how young TV protagonists we “grew up with” ultimately acted like adults and passed on to their children. While their family always remained close, there are definitely some major conflicts between the three siblings that are worth exploring. While it seems pretty clear that the parents in this situation picked their favorites, did the audience share their sentiment?

Bumi vs. Kya vs. Tenzin & Who Were There Children?

Aang and Katara had three children in the end – Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin in that order. All three grew up and played major roles in the Korra universe, all having a direct influence on their father’s reincarnation at one point or another. While all impressive, they were certainly different from one another.

Bumi: Bumi was the first-born son and the only non-bender of them (initially). While his younger siblings were off mastering their bending techniques, Bumi got more involved in the military. He was a well-respected commander with a track record of success – even earning the praise of General Iroh.

Although retired by the time we really meet in The Legend of Korra, he held a big position as the commander of the Second Division of the United Forces. As many fans were quick to realize, Aang named Bumi after his earthbending childhood friend. Like Bumi, he is a more comical character with a lot of jokes and shenanigans that everyone kind of groans at (although they do secretly enjoy him, you can tell).

Appearance-wise, he is the one sibling that really brings together both Aang and Katara’s traits – with light skin and blue eyes. While he relied heavily on strategizing and battle accomplishments, he does ultimately get Airbending powers. Although shocked at first, he does come to train them and takes part in defending Republic City.

The Kya Story: (Bumi vs. Kya vs. Tenzin)

The middle child, Kya, is the spitting image of Katara. She is the only one that inherited the darker skin and Waterbending. Like her mother, Kya has healing abilities, although she acknowledges that her mom is still a bit better.

Following Aang’s death, she moves to be with her mother in the water tribe after traveling around the world. She continues to visit Republic city on a regular basis and a very capable warrior. This is reflected in her strong personality as she never backs down – very comparable to the young Katara we were used to seeing. Although not as happy-go-lucky as her older brother, she is nonetheless very playful and likes to tease Tenzin (and apparently scared him a bit as a child).

Another striking characteristic of her is she is an LGBT+ character, having an attraction towards women. While the universe was always diverse, this was a pretty big deal – especially considering how supportive her whole family was towards her.

The Tenzin Story (Bumi vs. Kya vs. Tenzin)

As the baby of the family, Tenzin is often picked on by his older siblings. It’s easy to see how as he is a very strict character who takes every job seriously. Although he is no doubt compassionate and caring, he is not someone who likes to joke and seems to take his duty as Aang’s son seriously. How could he not?

As the only Airbending son to the Airbending Avatar, it’s easy to see why he has a lot of pressure on him. If you remember, the previous show, Avatar: The Last Airbender, let us learn about the fate of the air nomads pretty early on. The fire nation wiped them out in a horrible genocide leaving only Aang to carry on the legacy of an entire culture and nation.

It’s easy to see how he was overjoyed when his final son possessed Airbending skills. As such, Aang put a lot of time and effort into teaching Tenzin all the ways of the air nomads. He wanted to make sure that Tenzin would continue on and preserve the culture (and possibly pass his bending skills off to young heirs).

He has a strong sense of duty and often feels like he’s the only responsible one out of his siblings – but you have to admit there was a lot of weight on his shoulders. Luckily, he had children and went on to teach Korra about Airbending.

Without the pressure to master the elements in under a year (as with Aang’s situation), Korra lived with the monk and his family during her training. In many ways, he also became a father to Korra (as well as his biological children, who became benders as well).

What Was Their Dynamic?

Their family dynamic is pretty complicated, and it’s easy to see why. Those kids had a lot to live up to and, even as adults, seemed to carry some heavy baggage from the pressures. There is something so organic and natural about the three siblings interacting with each other, though, that most people can relate to – especially in families of three or more kids.

When stranded together, they tend to bicker (mostly against Tenzin’s lecturing), but they always pull through for each other. Anything they “held against” each other of kids, they addressed at one point or another during the show – including Bumi’s annoyance of not having bending or Tenzin acting all high and mighty when he wasn’t the only one to make sacrifices.

In the end, they are a family that would be incomplete without each other. While we will still try to crown a favorite, it’s important to point out that the siblings need each other to be themselves – otherwise, it just wouldn’t make sense.

Who Is the Best? (Bumi vs. Kya vs. Tenzin)

When you put all of their accomplishments out there like this, it’s hard to pick a favorite. Every one of the siblings has its own strengths and weaknesses that we can completely relate to. Maybe who you like the best has to do with your feelings between your own siblings. While there is no one that gives you a reason to hate them, there is one sibling that seems to have the most entertainment value and leads to the least amount of problems.

We’ll have to give this one to Bumi! Being the only non-bending child must have been tough (especially as the first-born son). However, getting Airbending must have been a lot to handle. In many ways, he feels like the perfect personality embodiment of Sokka, Iroh, and Aang’s childhood friend he was named after.

There is also something impressive about an underdog who retains their sense of humor and confidence despite the cards he was dealt. The show would not have been the same without the loveable general.

Who is your favorite of Aang and Katara’s kids? Do you think Bumi is overrated? We want to hear from you! Let us know in the comments below!

Even if anybody hasn’t watched the entire series and is only familiar with the show. They still might have noticed the unique arrow-shaped tattoo that Aang had all over his body. With the most noticeable arrow ending on his forehead. These unique blue-colored arrow-shaped tattoos were all over Aang’s body and were a part of his personality, symbolizing his mastery over the art of Airbending.

This unique Avatar tattoo is a part of the Air Nomad civilization. And not only does the Nomads have this tattoo. History Of Aang

Aang was born in 12 AG and selected the toys associated with the Avatar to play. By selecting these toys he confirmed his identity as the Avatar and was therefore taken by the monks to their air Temple. He received his training at the Southern Air Temple. And also visited the Eastern Air Temple to choose his animal companion. Each Air Nomad was paired with a Flying Bison that would be the Nomad’s partner for his life. And Flying Bisons were the only way to reach the secluded Air temples.

Aang’s Early Life

Aang chose his beloved Bison named Appa, who assisted Aang throughout his life. And was also thought to be the only surviving Flying Bison in all of the four kingdoms after Aang woke up after a hundred years. The traditional age to reveal the identity of The Avatar was 16 at the time of Aang.

But due to the impending threat of the Fire Nation waging war on the rest of the Kingdoms. The identity of Aang was revealed at the age of 12. This made him burdened because his friends would not play with him anymore. They stated that because Aang was the Avatar, he had an unfair advantage over the rest of the students.

The only person that treated Aang with love was Monk Gyatso, but due to his soft attitude towards Aang. The rest of the monks decided to send Aang to the Eastern Air Temple to complete his training. After learning this Aang left the temple on himself and was trapped in a storm during which he was nearly killed. But the Avatar state of Aang protected him and Appa by hibernating themselves inside a frozen bubble.

He is discovered by Katara and Sokka after a hundred years and the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender (TV Series) takes place. And we see in the series that Aang masters the remaining elements. And goes on to defeat the Fire Lord Max Ozai and fulfills his destiny to restore the balance to the four nations.

Significance of Aang’s Avatar Tattoo

The Avatar tattoo on Aang’s body is associated with the mastery of Airbending. Every Air Nomad who masters Airbending receives this signature arrow-shaped tattoo. This tattoo is the symbol of a Master Airbender. Aang received this tattoo when he was just twelve years old. Because he mastered Airbending at such a young age and became the youngest Master Airbender in the history of Nomads till that time.

When he was just six years old he was far better at Airbending than children twice his age. And he even emulated his teachers by the age of 10. He was given these tattoos by the monks at the age of 12 only because of his invention of the Air Scooter.

Master Airbenders are tattooed with five light blue arrows: one extending from the base of the spine to the forehead, one for each arm pointing to the hands, and likewise for the legs and feet. And when he was discovered by Katara and Sokka, his tattoos revealed his mastery of Airbending.

History Of This Tattoo

The earliest known ancestors of the Air Nomads used to live in turtle cities and were given the power to control Air by the Lion turtle when they left the cities. These ancestors were not masters but had similar tattoos but these tattoos did not end on the arrow shape that we now see. When these people evolved they learned the Airbending techniques from the Sky Bisons. The Bisons were the first Airbenders and the Air Nomads used to respect them highly because they taught the Nomads the art of Airbending.

These arrow-shaped markings were naturally found on the bodies of the Flying Bisons. So the Nomads modified their tattoos to match the natural markings of the Sky Bisons as a sign of respect. Afterward, every Master Airbender was awarded these tattoos that we see on Avatar Yangchen and Avatar Aang.

Lego Avatar: What Happened to The Last Air Bender Sets?

Lego dolls have become quite popular in the toy world. They have been able to gain considerable following even in the movie industry. For most superhero movies, there is always a Lego movie accompanying it, maybe not immediately but subsequently. In this light, Lego Avatar dolls seem almost impossible not to have been a thing in the toy-making world.

Avatar franchise is one of the biggest and fastest-growing franchises in the movie industry. The fandom for the series is so large that it would be regarded as foolish not to have an industry to cater for the needs of the fans. Lego Avatar dolls for the Last Airbender are available everywhere for purchase. Here are some that you might find interesting and desire to purchase. For a proper introduction of what these dolls are; Lego Avatar: The Last Airbender is a series of LEGO sets manufactured by none other than the LEGO company.

They were manufactured based on the Television series, Avatar The Last Airbender. However, due to a competition between Avatar, The Last Airbender, and SpongeBob SquarePants, the LEGO theme had to, unfortunately, be discontinued. This made the set one of the shortest running sets in LEGO history that had only two sets.

The two sets were released and debuted as part of the first wave of Nickelodeon-themed LEGO sets. This was following a partnership between the children’s network, Nickelodeon, and a very popular Danish toy company in late 2005. In this wave, Nickelodeon decided to include two of its most popular franchises at that time which was Avatar: The Last Airbender and SpongeBob SquarePants.

In late August 2006, the first five Nickelodeon LEGO sets hit retail shelves. The first two were based on Avatar The Last Airbender series and the other three were on SpongeBob SquarePants. The Avatar product line never really did last beyond its first LEGO outing. Its SpongeBob counterpart however did perform slightly better. It went on to remain a theme until around 2009. It was then reintroduced from 2011-2012, followed by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Why The Avatar Lego Sets Did Not Continue

Sokka - LEGO Avatar: The Last Air Bender Figure by Unknown

The discontinuation of the theme at that time was partly due to the belief that Avatar: The Last Airbender would eventually become obsolete. This was because only three seasons were planned and it was originally set to end the year after the first wave of the products. Nevertheless, the sets produced are based only on Book One, and therefore recreate events solely from this time frame.

The series at this time had not yet introduced characters like Toph, and Zuko as the friend of team Avatar that he later became. As at the time or the release of the set which is Book One time frame, he was still bent on capturing Aang and restoring his honor. There were only two new piece molds introduced in this theme, those for Momo and the wings of Aang’s glider.

Aang is the only individual character from the series that appears in both sets. Sokka and Momo only appear in “3828 Air Temple”, and Katara and Zuko only appear in “3829 Fire Nation Ship”. Other mini-figures merely portray generic Fire Nation soldiers. Important recurring characters that were already present in Book One and are not represented in any way in this theme are Appa, Iroh, and Zhao.

Lion Turtle (Avatar)Guide: What Happened To Them

In the Avatar franchise, it is revealed that the Lion turtle avatar was one of the most abundant species on earth, as seen in Avatar Wan’s time. By the time Aang is the current Avatar though, there is only one lion turtle avatar left. The big question? What happened to the lion turtle (Avatar) in the thousands of years that came between Wan and Aang?

The lion turtle avatar is one of Avatar: The Last Airbender’s most fascinating magical creatures. We can thank the mystery of its past for this. The show features many amazing and magical animals, also including air bison, winged lemurs, and dragons; and the lion turtle avatar, who shows up in the Avatar finale to help Aang is quite special.

Only one lion turtle avatar is present in Avatar: The Last Airbender. This is startling, as many existed thousands of years before the events of the series. So what happened to them? We’ll find out, but before then; let’s take a look at the history of the lion turtle.

History of the Lion Turtle Avatar

The lion turtle avatar is honorably referred to as the Ancient One by the spirits. It is the largest known animal in the world.

In the era of Raava, lion turtles populated the Spirit Wilds; where they served as protectors of mankind by housing human cities on their backs. As indicated by the symbols on their foreheads; each individual lion turtle showed an affinity for one of the four elements, and possessed the ability to grant individuals the power to control said element through energy bending.

When the era of the Avatar began; lion turtles relinquished their roles as protectors of mankind and started to roam the world. However, by 100 AG, the lion turtles had been hunted to near extinction save for one individual.

Lion Turtles In The Last Airbender and The Legend Of Korra

In The Legend of Korra, we encounter Wan, the first ever Avatar; and experience the early world of the Avatar universe. When Wan was alive, humans lived in cities on the backs of giant lion turtles; like the one who appears in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The lion turtles protected the humans and also provided them with the means to protect themselves: whenever humans had to venture into the spirit wilds beyond their cities; the lion turtles gave them the ability to bend one of the four elements through energy bending.

Different lion turtle cities gave different elements to their inhabitants. Wan’s original city was atop a lion turtle avatar who gave people the power to control fire. As Wan traveled the world, he encountered lion turtles who could bend air, water, and earth.

This proves that there were at least four lion turtle cities in the world, although it’s likely there could have been more. The exact amount of lion turtle cities is never specified. However, by the time Aang becomes Avatar, the lion turtles seem to have passed out of common knowledge.

The lion turtle who teaches Aang energy bending is the only one to appear in the series, meaning that something must have happened to the rest of the lion turtles.

What Happened To The Lion Turtle?

According to Nickelodeon, the lion turtles were hunted to near extinction during the ten thousand years between Wan’s time as the Avatar and The Legend of Korra. Even though they are the largest beings in the Avatar universe and possess the powers of the elements, lion turtles come across as fairly peaceful.

They are also isolationist, so it’s unlikely they fought back or banded together as they were being hunted. Just how the humans managed to kill these city-sized creatures with limited technology has not been clarified, but what is clear is that Aang’s lion turtle is the last one left. He disguised himself as a floating island and made sure to stay far away from any humans who may harm him.

Unfortunately, the lion turtles are not the only species hunted until they were nearly extinct features in Avatar. In season 3, episode 13, “The Firebending Masters,” viewers learn of the Fire Nation’s complicated past hunting dragons.

While Sozin was Fire Lord, he began the tradition of hunting dragons for sport – anyone who killed a dragon would earn the title of ‘Dragon’ themselves. Iroh claimed to have killed the last dragon, but in reality, he had lied to protect the last living dragons, Ran and Shaw. In Legend of Korra, Zuko flies on Ran and Shaw’s descendant, a dragon named Druk.

Despite being large and powerful beings, the lion turtles, like the dragons, were hunted almost to extinction. That is very much proof of humans’ capacity for cruelty throughout Avatar: The Last Airbender, reaffirming the need for an Avatar who can keep balance and protect the world. Still, it is good that Aang’s lion turtle survived for as long as he did, as he helped Aang when he was in need and deepened the lore of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Guide to The Avatar Tattoos and Airbender Culture

Avatar Tattoos; Aang’s tattoos have always been one of his unique qualities. Like any airbending Avatars, their tattoos would naturally glow, radiating the power of Raava as they enter into the Avatar state.

The tattoos signify more than just a glow spot for immense power

Avatar Tattoos History for Airbenders

The earliest known ancestors of the Air Nomads lived on top of the air lion turtle during the era of Raava. They were also known to have had similar tattoos along with their bodies. Although theirs had the ends drawn with an upside-down “T” and a  dot beneath it. These tattoos were even applied to children.

As at that time, the airbending people only received the power to control air while out of the city. So, the tattoo was not associated with airbending mastery as it became at a later date. This can be seen in the Legend of Korra.

After the early airbenders learned more advanced techniques from the flying bison, they changed the tattoos for airbending masters to emulate the arrow-shaped markings of the bison. It is said that the original Airbenders were the bison.

When an Airbender reaches the level of master by completing all thirty-six tiers of airbending, all Airbenders get their tattoo with about five light blue arrows. There is one extending from the base of the spine to the forehead. Also, another one for each arm pointing to the hands, and as well as for the legs and feet.

Unlike most master airbenders who gain their status later in life, Avatar Aang received his tattoos when he was only twelve following his invention of the air scooter, despite only completing thirty-five tiers. This made him the youngest known airbending master. This was until his granddaughter Jinora received her tattoos at the age of eleven in 171 AG.

Aang’s Air Nomad tattoos glowed as any airbending Avatar when they entered the Avatar State. All his tattoos glow except for the spot on his back where Azula had struck him down, leaving a scar on the tattoo.

What Does Avatar’s Tattoos Mean?

Aang’s tattoos mean more than just a fashion and airbending trend. It is more of an identity as an Airbender that was elaborated upon in Legend of Korra. Avatar’s tattoos are a defining part of his overall appearance and are also a key part of his identity as the Avatar and the Last of the air Nomads. This part of his appearance prompted some very hilarious disguises when they were trying not to be seen.

Avatar’s tattoos have deep cultural significance for the Air Nomads in the Avatar: The Last Airbender sequel comics Aang discovers that he has a fan club, and is shocked and offended to see that they’ve copied his tattoos despite being neither Air Nomads or Airbender.

The Avatar tattoos are quite special to being an Airbender. Despite the flattering nature of being an Airbender, he does not find it pleasant that they have tainted the sacred airbending tradition by bestowing tattoos just casually.

The tattooing tradition was inspired by the first airbenders, the sky bison. Flying bison naturally have arrows in their fur. Air Nomad culture became strongly built around the lessons that they learned from the sky bison. Although the Air Nomads true to their name were originally wanderers.

They established four air temples for their people and the sky bison to gather. They made up the smallest of the other nations and lived a peaceful life in tune with nature. They never had a formal military as they never really cared about much of those details. The Air Nomads are a race of people that are devoted to seeking spiritual enlightenment.

Airbender Mastery Shown In The Avatar Tattoos

In order to achieve airbending mastery, an Air Nomad must go through thirty-six tiers of training. Either this or they create a new airbending technique. This training involves centering oneself and taking the path of least resistance to direct chi through the body. Airbenders fight defensively, using their enemies’ strength against them and quickly maneuvering to avoid attacks. As Bumi told Aang the first time they fought.

“Typical airbender tactics. Avoid and evade.”

Aang’s tattoos just went to show that he had attained a level at a young age which a lot of airbenders did not find easy. For Aang, he was able to create a technique and still mastered thirty-five tiers at the age of twelve.

Another component of airbending mastery is spirituality. To get your tattoos as an Airbender, you will have to have attained a certain level and the Air Nomads value this greatly.

Meditation amongst them is extremely crucial to becoming proficient at airbending. This is mainly because it helps benders focus internally and connect to their spiritual side, with some even capable of entering the Spirit World.

Glowing Avatar Tattoos

Aang uses meditation to speak with Avatar Roku for guidance, and the fact that his tattoos glow while he is in the Avatar state further demonstrates his connection to the Spirit World and his past lives. Jinora also uses meditation to enter the Spirit World and to project her spirit for other characters when she needs to contact them from a distance.

Avatar’s tattoos are somewhat linked to being the Avatar as it shows a level of devotion to either mastery of the elements or spirituality. He had not completely finished his spiritual training but he was able to create the “air scooter,” fulfilling the criteria to become a master and receive his tattoos.

Jinora on the other hand did complete her training and guided Korra into the Spirit World for the first time, demonstrating her mastery and earning her tattoos as well. So, as an Airbender, a technique that will provide usefully or mastery of the spiritual side earns you the tattoos and Avatar Aang just that.

Avatar Tattoos signify their entry into the Avatar state as they begin to glow, unlike other Avatars who just maintain a glow in their eyes for a second or two. Although Aang did show the same level of ease of entering the state and back like a master at the end when he fought Fire Lord Ozai.

Avatar Animals: The First Benders in the Avatar World

In Avatar it is all about balance and harmony. Nature leads an important role throughout the whole series. As we can see a lot of different animals in the show who have a part in the history, from Appa and Mommo who were partners of our protagonists to the original bending animals as we are told humans learned to bend the elements watching these creatures do it first. During the series, we can see a big and detailed world with different fauna as each chapter passed by. Every nation and biome has its kind of animal that takes advantage of its environment to live in the world of avatar.

The lore was developed even more in The Legend of Korra once we were told humans not only learned to bend watching animals but at the very beginning, they were granted the ability by lion turtles, when both the spirit and human realm were together during Avatar Wan’s time. Those were very different times as humans did not have power unless they approached a Lion Turtle, usually connected to a specific element. There was no avatar so humans had to get away to protect themselves from spirits.

After Avatar Wan closed the spirit portals splitting both worlds the lion turtles stopped their connection with humans and retreated to unpopulated areas of the world. Humankind now had the avatar to look after them so in the next years they would develop their abilities regarding the elements by watching animals that already mastered fire, earth, water, and air.

Dragons and Fire

In the 3rd season of Avatar: The Legend of Aang we can see both Aang and Zuko struggling to firebend, Aang needed a master, and Zuko for some reason could not produce fire anymore. They decided to do some research in the ruins that belonged to The Ancient Sun Warriors and realized they were not extinct. During the chapter “The Firebending Masters” Aang and Zuko are about to be introduced to the original firebending masters Ran and Shaw. At the end of the episode, we realize these masters were not human but dragons.

Even though the Fire Nation hunted the species nearly to death these two dragons were hidden and still existed. They even had a ritual where they would test an apprentice to be worthy or not. Our protagonists were worthy and taught in the original ways of firebending, if they wouldn’t have been honorable enough they would have been destroyed. The dragon’s firebending emphasizes the life-giving qualities of fire. For many years The Fire Nation mistakenly directed firebending to destruction fueling it by rage and hate instead of soul pureness and honor.

Badgermoles and Earth

In the chapter “The Cave of Two Lovers” we are told the story of two lovers who lived in warring villages. Even though they loved each other it was dangerous for them to meet as it could unleash their hometown’s fury. However, they learned how to earthbend by watching badgermoles. They created a labyrinth no one could navigate except for them. The story ends with tragedy as one of them was slain in their village’s war so the remaining lover put an end to the war with her earthbending abilities. This story is believed to be the foundation of Omashu.

We have a closer example for us about badgermoles teaching earthbending. Our beloved Toph also learned from these animals. One time she ran away from home as a child she was found by badgermoles. They had their blindness in common so according to Toph, they were able to understand each other. They helped her to develop her bending abilities as badgermoles use earthbending as an extension of their senses. This is how Toph learned how to use her bending not only to manipulate earth but to be able to perceive her surroundings.

Flying Bisons and Air (Avatar Animals)

Flying bisons are sacred and have their spot in air nomads’ culture since they are recognized to be the first air masters. Each airbender was given a flying bison during its training to become its lifelong companion. Once their training as airbenders was completed they would tattoo arrows that resembled the ones flying bisons had in their body.

Even though in The Legend of Aang Appa was thought to be the last flying bison alive it was one of the animals with the most screen time as it was a crucial part of the Avatar Team. Appa was able to fly and use some airbending techniques using his mouth and tail. He also was the main method of transportation for the team during the series.

The Moon, Kois and Water (Avatar Animals)

During the final arc of the first season, we are told in the Northern Water Tribe that the first waterbender was the moon. The first waterbenders saw how the moon pushed and pulled tides and waves and learned how to do it themselves. The moon may not be an animal. However, the moon and the ocean spirits manifested in the mortal realm as koi fishes in Spirit Oasis.

Waterbending is maintained in balance with these koi fishes performing an eternal dance of push and pull. During the events of The Legend of Aang, the moon spirit is assassinated causing all waterbenders powers to vanish until the balance is restored by Yue. This is a prove of how vital and delicate is balance in this world.

Lion Turtles and Energy

As we mentioned before lion turtles were the first animals to share their power with humans. This was done in a slightly different way than the other animals did. Lion turtles managed chi and energy to transform it into elements as we are explained during the Legend of Korra.

We have a first approach with these mysterious animals during The Legend of Aang as one lion turtle gave Aang the knowledge regarding energy bending to solve his quid of defeating fire lord Ozai without killing him. With this knowledge, Aang took firebending away from Ozai and won the war.

Bending has been one of the most relevant subjects during the series, it even develops characters without these abilities like Sokka. Being balance as one of the principal foundations of the world’s philosophy it is not surprising that animals and nature play a key role within the series. Animals are not only loyal companions to the characters but also teach lessons if looked at them with wisdom. This detail in Avatar’s narrative proves once again that this is one of the best series ever written.

10 Best Funny Avatar Memes For a Good Laugh

Avatar Memes are some of the best memes on the internet with characters that make for funny memes.l

Here are some of the best Avatar memes.

Best Funny Avatar Memes Reactions:

Yep, that’s gotta be gross. This is a reaction you would most likely get when you see your best friend kiss your sister too.

For example, Sokka here wishes he could forget about the fact that his best friend and sister are now a lovely thing. Or how the avatar fandom would like to pretend that we don’t remember the fact that a live-action movie exists. Yes, that was entirely gross and this caption helpfully depicts the proper emotion to these two things.

Best Funny Avatar Memes Cause for Alarm:

Okay, if an old woman that you met in the woods while telling each other scary water tribe ghost stories meets you in the woods, you would definitely not be creeped out too right?

Not only did she offer to teach you to pull out water from nothing, she eventually offers to teach you to bend blood and control people. How could that go wrong yeah?

To be fair, we’ve all ignored warning signs. Just maybe none quite so blatant at the ones that Katara ignored here.

Because really, killing beautiful plants in this manner does not remotely look like the actions of a good person, no matter how you look at it. And that’s not taking the rest of the warning signs into account.

Funny Avatar Memes on Push-ups:

Okay, I think anyone with Earth bending would do it too. I would. Think about it. Also, Toph being sneaky and always looking for a better way to do things. This is definitely something she can do.

So yeah, we absolutely believe that she’d push the earth down, rather than herself up. That is, assuming you could talk her into doing push-ups in the first place so good luck with that.

Sneak Attack:

Okay, sneak attacks work when you’re sneaky Sokka. That’s why they’re called sneak attacks.

We get where he’s coming from though. Attacks are so much more fun when you get to call out or yell about them. At least it’s supposed to be and this is just a fact. But that doesn’t mean they’re going to be effective. And since some of the fights Sokka was in actually made a difference for basically the whole world well we don’t need to state the rest, do we?

Best Funny Avatar Memes for the Last Airbender Movie:

Every Avatar fan has undoubtedly attempted to gouge their eyes out for participating in the travesty that was the Last Airbender Movie.

This is a meme that was the perfect fit for the reaction of fans all over the world when we watched the Last Airbender movie. Also, think about it. If Sokka had heard about it, or watched it, this is the face he’d make. We just know it. How do we know it?

Because that’s the face all the Avatar fans made when they saw the trailer. Also, note how he was unsatisfied with the shabby play of the Ember Island players? He had to go backstage and make some corrections. So, yeah, we are certain this would have been his reaction.

Mark Hamil Irony Makes a Funny Avatar Meme

This meme is poking fun at the fact that Mark Hamill voiced the Fire Lord. He is a man who attacked his son, Zuko, for standing up for what is right. The irony, of course, would be because of the other roles Mark Hamill has famously portrayed. But we probably don’t need to explain that bit to you. We hope. Let’s face it. It takes a whole lot of guts to face your father and tell him what a bad father he has been all your life. Also, Mark Hamil being the one to voice this is like saying, ‘You’re one to talk.’

Group Projects:

We’ve all had that moment where we thought it on the go haven’t we?

This makes total sense by the way. T consider Zuko and Sokka part of a group that doesn’t communicate well, doesn’t it? Neither is exactly strong when it comes to expressing their feelings. And both can get very loud at stating their opinions. The mix would be, well you’ve seen what it’d be like, completely chaotic.

Is it really Sokka? Is it really okay to not think everything through thought?

Best Avatar Memes – Character Mismatch:

How many other Avatar fans also found this scene to be odd. Sokka is supposed to be the meat guy. If anything, he loves meat almost as much as he loves his sister. That’s a huge leap and it’s way up there.

The fans putting the blame for Sokka’s food choice on the animation staff was an interesting choice. It also made it all the more clear that they’re joking. Because seriously, before this point did we ever see Sokka eat an apple without complaint? So character Mismatch maybe?  However it is, we were glad to have our meat loving guy back.

Best Avatar Memes – Cactus Juice Sokka:

This is probably one of the most memorable silly Sokka moments in the whole series.

Sokka, dying of thirst, decides to drink cactus juice that he finds in the desert. I mean, we have all wanted to take cactus juice that we found in the desert as well so we can excuse that one Sokka. besides, we got some pretty good memories from there didn’t we?

Cactus Juice is the quenchiest. You’re spot on Sokka.

Best Avatar Memes – Zuko Field Trip:

Everyone gets to go on a life changing trip with Zuko. I wonder what you would find out about yourself if you did that.

This Zuko field trip meme is probably the best one of the bunch, but there are others to be found out there, if this one isn’t to your liking. Personally, we love that they went with an image of Toph clinging to Zuko. She was the only one to address the elephant in the room. And nobody can really blame Toph for getting a little possessive here; she didn’t want to get left out.

Avatar Costume Guide: Aang And Katara

So you’ve got cosplay ideas, and you’re not quite sure on what to go with or who to go as. Well, maybe you have and you’re eyeing an Avatar costume. The problem is you have absolutely no idea how you should go about it, and now you’re stuck on what to do.

As always, we’ve got you covered with what to do about your Avatar costume, so you don’t have to break a sweat. We’ve got costume guides on what you need and how you need to go about with the perfect Avatar costume.

In this article, we’ll be covering two of the most popular characters of the franchise. They are members of the original Team Avatar; and perhaps are the two most cosplayed characters ever. Here’s your Avatar Costume Guide for Aang and Katara.

Avatar Costume: How To Dress Like Aang

Dressing like Aang might look like a lot of work; but it is an Avatar costume that you can pull off easily with the right materials. So, before we get on with what you need in your Avatar costume wardrobe, let’s dive into the character himself so you can get a sense of his type of person. After all, how a person dresses usually determines what kind of person they are.

About Aang

Aang is a merrymaking kid, adventurous and perhaps a little naive as well. Possessing a keen respect for personal independence and life, he does not eat meat and is at times very reluctant to engage in conflict. Constantly craving the stimulation of new surroundings and people, he is often distracted and will take detours much to the annoyance of his friends and foes.

Discouraged by the weight of his responsibilities, Aang often longed for the simplicity of those people’s lives. This did not stop him from building an impressive collection of friends and contacts, spanning the four nations. A love for animals drew his attention to the different variations found in each region. Even with a carefree facade, the weight of his responsibilities was burdensome to Aang. The reality of being the last Airbender left him without any realistic peers. He often felt alone. It was these struggles that pushed Aang to nurture his relationships with others as without them; he would be very much alone in his role.

Aang Avatar Costume: Items You Will Need

Avatar Costume

These are all the items you’ll need to recreate Aang’s iconic Avatar costume, as seen from Seasons 1 to 2, and then in the latter parts of Season 3

Aang’s Avatar costume options can either be in partial clothing, as seen in the final battle with Fire Lord Ozai or on the Day of the Invasion; or in full clothing, as seen in the rest of the series. Aang can be played by both mle and female cosplayers, as he is a very versatile character. The bald cap will help to simulate the monk haircut, so you don’t have to worry about cutting your hair.

If you’re going for a look with partial clothing then you have the choice of going shirtless and painting on his symbols or wearing just a sash over a bare chest. Then you can just paint on his head arrow symbol. Brown, wide legged pants with either colored tights or tall boots will take care of what little clothing is required for this look.

Avatar Costume: How To Dress Like Katara

Avatar Costume

Dressing like Katara looks like it’s a big task, considering how intricate water tribe attire looks. But where it might look like a lot of work; it is in reality a very easy Avatar costume that you can pull off with the right materials. So, before we get on with what you need in your Avatar costume wardrobe, let’s dive into the character herself so you can get a sense of  the sort of person Katara is. After all, how a person dresses usually determines what kind of person they are.

About Katara

If you don’t know who Katara is, you’re missing out on a really amazing anime heroine. She is a main character from the popular Nickelodeon animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. As a highly skilled waterbender, she has the ability to telekinetically control water and ice. Along with her brother Sokka and Aang, they embark on a quest to help put an end to the destruction caused by the Fire Nation. Get the look of Katara with this complete costume guide.

Katara, from Avatar: The Last Airbender, is the true definition of power. Nothing was simply handed to her on a silver platter. Still, she persevered, trained, and became the deadliest waterbender in the entire world! From a very young age, she was faced with tragedy. Her mother was murdered at a young age and then her father left to fight in the war against the Fire Nation.

This left Katara devastated. As a result, she became extremely protective of her friends and family, especially Aang and her brother Sokka. She quickly learned to take charge, becoming strong willed and compassionate. She worked hard to master waterbending even more than Avatar himself. Later, she became the world’s strongest healer and after Aang’s passing became the waterbending trainer of the next Avatar, Korra.

Katara Avatar Costume: Items You Will Need

These are all the items you’ll need to recreate Katara’s iconic Avatar costume, as seen from Seasons 1 to 2, and then in the latter parts of Season 3:

Cosplay Katara’s minimalistic costume with the iconic Water Tribe Outfit. Next, wear the Contestant Wig and signature Katara Necklace. Finally, complete her look with Elastic Legging, Fingerless Gloves, and Women’s Knee High Boots. Now that you have all of these items; dress up and go forth to become the best Waterbender in the world.

There’s no cooler power than bending water and ice to your will. Katara, with thousands of hours of practice, was able to do just that. Practicing her moves will make your Katara cosplay even more convincing! You’ll need her Water Tribe Outfit along with Elastic Legging, Fingerless Gloves, and Women’s Knee High Boots. Unless you have hair to match Katara’s style, add a basic wig (as seen in the item list above) and her signature Water Tribe Necklace (also linked in the items list) to make the cosplay as accurate as possible.

It’s also important to  bear in mind that Katara is extremely caring and protective of her friends and family. And that’s who you should bring into the fold for this cosplay. Katara would make the perfect character to dress up as alongside an Aang cosplay player; especially considering their relationship in the series. You and a significant other can decide to pair up and stun onlookers as one of the most powerful couples in the world.

Avatar Aang’s Family Tree: a Big Loving Family

Since the very beginning of The Legend of Korra, we are aware our dear friend Aang is dead. We all have a special nostalgia for the first avatar we met. We ended up with a lot of questions after The Last Airbender finale but with the sequel’s release, we can grasp a lot of information regarding the world of Avatar and answer some questions about our dear protagonists. Today we are focusing on Avatar Aang’s Family Tree and how it grew.

Avatar Aang’s Family Tree Back to The Original Show

As we recall on the events from ATLA during the 100 years Aang was frozen in an iceberg, the Fire Nation attacked the air nomads committing a genocide that almost exterminated all the nomads but Aang. From the first moment, Aang realizes that he yields a heavyweight on his shoulders. He was the last member of a whole culture. Even though this seemed like a secondary problem, once the 100 years’ war ended Aang started to create a family to reconstruct the airbenders.

Along with the series we get to see a sparkling love between Aang and Katara. When they first meet in the Southern Water Tribe they start an innocent friendship that evolves with time into a complex relationship. Once fire lord Ozai was defeated we can watch Aang and Katara finally kissing and starting a long-lasting relationship.

The Legend of Korra and The New Family Ties

Once the Legend of Korra started we got more details about our friend’s doings. Aang was dead. However, he made sure he had decent offspring. We can see an older Katara who at this point has seen both his husband the Avatar and his brother Sokka. We can also see the many children she had with Aang; three children, Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin.

Bumi

Bumi was the first and eldest of Aang’s children. He was born without bending abilities which made him somehow distant from his father who was focused on affairs like his avatar duties and preserving the air culture. Bumi was a military officer who got to the position of commander of the Second Division of the United Forces. Even though Bumi lived his entire life as a nonbender after the Harmonic Convergence he got airbending abilities.

Kya

Kya is the second of Aang and Katara’s children. She is a waterbender who traveled the world earning herself a name as a famous healer. We can infer from the series Kya had a closer relationship with her mother. She settled down in the Southern Water Tribe with Katara. As we could watch in Korra’s second season Kya and Bumi felt kind of left behind in comparison with Tenzin, who was an airbender, by their father. One bond she shares with her father is her spiritualism. Kya can feel changes in the auras and locate people.

Tenzin

Tenzin was Aang and Katara’s third child. As some say third time’s a charm and Tenzin, the third son was an airbender. As we can see during Korra’s second season in comparison with his brothers Tenzin did have a different relationship with his father. As we know, Aang was focused on his avatar duties, along with the recovery of the air culture. Tenzin could spend more time with Aang since he trained him in the air customs along with airbending.

Avatar Aang’s Family Tree Grows Further With His Grandkids

Tenzin is the only son who is already a father. We can see Tenzin took very seriously the responsibility of continuing with the air culture. From the very introduction of the character, we also meet his wife Pema, who is a nonbender but with whom he has four children: Jinora, Ikki, Meelo, and Rohan. Since they’re the last airbenders before the Harmonic Convergence they are very devoted to the air nomad’s culture.

Jinora

Jinora is the elder of Tenzin and Pema’s children. She is the youngest full airbender known before the Harmonic Convergence and has a quiet personality along with a natural affinity with spirits. She became Avatar Korra’s spiritual guide during the spirit book of the series and have a good relationship with all her relatives even though her siblings upset her sometimes.

Ikki

is Tenzin and Pema’s middle child. She has an outgoing personality, really relatable to air nomads’ stereotypes of joyfulness and easygoingness. She dominated air bending and even though during The Legend of Korra she was not a full airbender she mastered abilities like the air scooter created by her grandfather.

Meelo

Meelo is the first boy of the gang and he is completely hilarious. Even though he is young we can see him using airbending techniques during all his appearances and also working as a comic relief every time he appeared on the screen. Behind Meelo’s childish and goofy personality we can find a very talented artist and an adaptive learner who was able to learn how to train not one lemur but every lemur on the Southern Air Temple.

Rohan

Rohan is the youngest of Aang and Katara’s grandchildren. When we are first introduced to Pema she is pregnant with Rohan in the first season of the Legend of Korra. She gave birth to him during an attack of the equalists to the Air Island. As the Legend of Korra ended Rohan was still a baby so we do not have information regarding his abilities or personality but at the moment of today, he is the youngest of Aang’s progeny.

Final Thoughts On Avatar Aang’s Family Tree

When we first met Aang in the first show he was just a child himself. We joined him during his adventures to end the 100-year war and defeat the Fire Nation but as we said, after those events, his life continued and he had to focus on different problems. Fortunately, Aang found love in Katara, and together they formed a big and exotic family.

The weight of maintaining themselves a whole culture got a little bit easier after the Harmonic Convergence where several non bender citizens acquired new airbending abilities, restoring the balance between the four elements. We don’t know if Avatar Aang’s family tree could still get bigger but we are sure he would love to see the family he began.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is an alternate retelling of Hiromu Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist manga that is closer to the source material than the previous 2003 adaptation, this time covering the entire story.

“In order for something to be obtained, something of equal value must be lost.”

Alchemy is bound by this Law of Equivalent Exchange—something the young brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric only realize after attempting human transmutation: the one forbidden act of alchemy. They pay a terrible price for their transgression—Edward loses his left leg, Alphonse his physical body. It is only by the desperate sacrifice of Edward’s right arm that he is able to affix Alphonse’s soul to a suit of armor. Devastated and alone, it is the hope that they would both eventually return to their original bodies that gives Edward the inspiration to obtain metal limbs called “automail” and become a state alchemist, the Fullmetal Alchemist.

Three years of searching later, the brothers seek the Philosopher’s Stone, a mythical relic that allows an alchemist to overcome the Law of Equivalent Exchange. Even with military allies Colonel Roy Mustang, Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye, and Lieutenant Colonel Maes Hughes on their side, the brothers find themselves caught up in a nationwide conspiracy that leads them not only to the true nature of the elusive Philosopher’s Stone, but their country’s murky history as well. In between finding a serial killer and racing against time, Edward and Alphonse must ask themselves if what they are doing will make them human again… or take away their humanity.

Spontaneous Human Combustion: a chaotic phenomenon that has plagued humanity for years, randomly transforming ordinary people into flaming, violent creatures known as Infernals. While Infernals make up the first-generation accounts of Human Combustion, the second and third generations became known as pyrokinetics—people gifted with the ability to manipulate and control their flames while remaining human. To combat the Infernal threat and discover the cause, the Tokyo Armed Forces, Fire Defense Agency, and Holy Church of Sol produced their answer: the Special Fire Force.

Young and eager third-generation pyrokinetic Shinra Kusakabe, nicknamed Devil’s Footprints for his explosive ability to ignite his feet at will, becomes a member of the lively Special Fire Force Company 8. Upholding the brigade’s duty to extinguish the blazing Infernals and lay their souls to rest, Shinra is determined to become a hero who will save the lives of those threatened by the flame terror.

However, this is not the hero’s game Shinra imagined. The Fire Force is a fractured mess of feuding brigades, abnormal Infernal sightings are increasing all over Tokyo, and a shadowy group is claiming to have answers to the strange fire that caused the death of Shinra’s family 12 years ago. Faced with many obstacles within and outside the Fire Force, Shinra fights to uncover the truth behind the burning mysteries that have kept him in the dark.

Obviously, the similarities between Avatar and Kung Fu Panda are so clear. First of all, Aang and Po Ping clearly have quite a lot in common.  They both have the same sense of global responsibility bestowed on them. Where Po is chosen as the next Dragon Warrior, the protector of his kingdom; who will save it from many dangers. But Po really doubts himself all through the movie, much like Aang does.

Eventually, it is his friends that give him the confidence boost he needs; and help him actualize his full potential. It is interesting to note that these friends did not even like him in the beginning. This is very similar to how Team Avatar is essential to Aang’s fulfillment of his role as the Avatar. The themes and the relationships in Kung Fu Panda definitely make it one of the top movies like Avatar.

One of the prevailing themes in Avatar was on how Aang was a person with pacifist ideals. As an airbender, he was prone to avoiding confrontations. But this conflicted with the fact that to end the Hundred Year War; he would have to resort to force and possibly even murder when facing Fire Lord Ozai. This is the same dilemma that Arjun: The Warrior Prince faces.

The Western movie entertainment scene may not be familiar with the great Indian epic Mahabharata; which is the basis and inspiration for Arjun: The Warrior Prince. The epic tells the story of Arjun, a brave prince, as well as his journey to become a great warrior. Similar to the settings of most movies like Avatar, this is a journey that begins in his childhood.

Aang and Arjun’s stories are quite similar – and this goes beyond the fact that their names both start with an A. Aang was an airbender who went through great hardships to make peace with the fact that ultimately, he would have to give up his peaceful ideals and fight in order to save the world. Arjun faced a similar situation himself.

Just like Aang and the many protagonists in the list of movies like Avatar; Moana is the chosen one. She is entrusted with the responsibility or job of reuniting the goddess Te Fiti with a relic; a relic that she doesn’t know next to nothing about. At first it seems like a simple drop off and that all she will need is confidence. But things quickly take a turn for the unexpected.

Things don’t exactly go Moana’s way. Let’s not even talk about the fact that she has her plans delayed; as she is forced into a corner and has to seek out the demi god Maui. She needs his help in order to save her village; and by extension, the world.

The two worlds in Moana and Avatar might be a sharp contrast of one another. However, they are unified in the sense that they are about overcoming hardships; as well as doing what it takes to protect the lives of the ones you love and care for.

In a world full of strong and bulky, vicious Vikings, Hiccup is considered a weakling within his community. He really fears having to take the throne as village chief; or follow any of his father’s footsteps. Afterall, they are very big footsteps indeed, compared to his rather small ones. But it is more about him being afraid of not living up to his father’s legacy.

Instead, Hiccup seeks to forge his own path, much different from the Viking ways. Killing dragons is not his thing. However, through a series of unbelievable events, Hiccup finds himself face to face with a dragon. It isn’t just any dragon; it’s a Nightfury – one of the most vicious dragons in existence.

But instead of killing the dragon in true Viking fashion; Hiccup names it, heals it and they become friends. They eventually go on many adventures together, and even stop the war between Vikings and Dragons. The relationship between Toothless and Hiccup is very similar to the relationship and bond that Appa and Aang share. This movie takes place during ancient Egypt. It tells audiences about the biblical story of Prince Moses, who was born in a life of luxury but chose to become a savior of the downtrodden. He stood up against his brother and eventually led to the freedom of all his country’s slaves.

Moses standing up to the royal family is very similar to the way Zuko stood up against the Fire Family and the Fire Nation. He joined Aang and together they brought the Hundred Year War to an end.

Ramayana: The Legend Of Prince Rama

Very much like Aang, Lord Rama was a savior born to his people in order to fulfill a prophecy. He was born to free his people from the evil grasps of the Demon Lord; Raavana. In his quest to fulfill his destiny, he and his brother Laxman travel across the sea; along with Hanuman, his loyal disciple.

Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama also touches on various topics, such as the fight between good vs evil; as well as right vs wrong, and it explains them in an easy to understand and simple manner.  It is also a very good showcase on the Indian culture. And anyone who is interested in the people, traditions and the culture of India is advised to take some time out to see this movie.

Avatar Symbols: How They Represent The Bending Arts

The Avatar Symbols represent the Four Bending Nations and the elements they bend. They are fire, air, water and earth.

Bending is the ability to manipulate an element. It is essential to many aspects in the regular lives of the people of the world. There are five bending forms, although four of them are major; as they bend a specific to a particular physical element; while the fifth bending form manipulates the energy within the human body. Also, the only time where anyone has been able to bend more than one element at a time has been with the Avatar; as he or she has the ability to practice all the five bending forms.

The four bending forms, as depicted in the Avatar symbols, are based on four classic elements. There is water, earth, fire, and air. Each element is manipulated through certain martial art styles that are similar to the qualities of the element itself.

Bending is traditionally performed through the motions of one’s hands and feet, but certain benders are able to effectively manipulate their element with only minimal movement of their body, such as by using just their head or torso. In some cases, benders are able to perform their bending without the aid of any physical movement at all. Instead they use sheer focus and force of will. This skill is known as psychic bending.

The Four Nations

Avatar Symbols

Each element is associated with a particular nation in the world. That is why there are Four Nations. The Water Tribe corresponds with waterbending and is split into two; the Northern and Southern Water Tribes residing at the two Poles. The Earth Kingdom is associated  with earthbending. The Fire Nation associates with firebending. The Air Nomads are synonymous with airbending. There are other bending groups however, such as the Sun Warriors with firebending, and the Foggy Swamp Tribe for waterbending.

Energybending

Avatar Symbols: Energybending

The Energybending symbol is a combination of all the Avatar symbols; a depiction of how energybending focuses on the inner energy of the human body. It does not focus on elements like the other bending forms.

The fifth bending art, energybending, is unlike the other four in that little physical action is required to direct the bending itself. The four elemental bending arts are all dependent on the energy, or chi, within the human body, relying on its flow through the body to manipulate a specific element. A person is able to bend when they extend the influence of their chi beyond the body to interact with the environment. Energybending, on the other hand, is concerned with the manipulation of the energy itself and is able to remove or grant bending abilities

Avatar Symbols: Airbending

Avatar Symbols: Airbending

This is one of the Avatar Symbols, and it represents the bending form that is airbending.

Airbending is the bending art used by the Air Nomads. The sky bison or the flying bison were the original airbenders, and after the Lion Turtles stopped giving people bending; humans learnt from them. As seen in the depiction of the Avatar symbols, airbending is a free bending form. It concentrates on speed and evasion, forgoing a strong offense for a greater defense.

Though it apparently looks to be lacking fatal finishing moves, airbending is the most dynamic of all the bending arts. As air is the element of freedom, airbenders use their capability to bend unrestricted by the ground or any other factors in the environment,  using their own momentum as a weapon; evading attacks with astounding agility to tire their opponents out or building up massive inertia for explosive gusts of wind to make their counterattacks finishing moves.

When they do resort to physical confrontation, airbenders can harness the immense, intangible power of wind. Airbenders also use a flight technique by operating a glider and using the air to provide thrust and lift. Every element that is a part of the Avatar symbols has a direct bending opposite. Airbending’s direct opposite is earthbending and the confrontational style that serves as the bending form’s foundation.

Airbending also has subskills, which are flight and spiritual projection. However, flight has only been achieved by two people in the entire history of airbending, namely Zaheer and Guru Laghima. Airbending is the element of freedom, and its season is fall; as depicted in the diagram of the Avatar Symbols and their colors.

Avatar Symbol: Waterbending

Waterbending

Waterbending, as seen in the Avatar Symbols

Waterbending is practiced by some people of the Water Tribe. It is a versatile element; and it is unique in the sense that the original bender of the element was not an animal. buInstead, humans learnt how to bend water from the Moon and its control of the oceans.  Quite similar to the element represented in the Avatar symbols, waterbenders are extremely adaptable and versatile.

Waterbending concentrates on the flow of energy, focusing less on strength and more on turning the opponent’s own energy against them. While a bender’s victory in battle depends on their skill or ingenuity, waterbenders gain a serious advantage or disadvantage depending on the amount of water around them, although highly skilled waterbenders can draw water from anywhere, such as draw humidity from the air and bend the water in living things, especially plants.

Some benders are can bend water from blood or their own sweat, and this shows their skill level. As the element of change, waterbenders can fluidly and quickly alternate from defense to offense, from a wall of ice to a jet of water, turning their opponent’s strength against them. Due to its lunar acclimatization, waterbending is stronger at night and ineffective during a lunar eclipse or when the Moon Spirit dies.

However, to counter their ineffectiveness during a lunar eclipse, waterbenders gain immense power during the peak of the full moon. The opposite of waterbending is firebending, with its relatively stagnant, direct philosophy. The sub-skills for waterbending are healing and bloodbending. Waterbending is the element of change, and its season is winter.

Avatar Symbols: Earthbending

Avatar Symbols: Earthbending

The earthbending symbol. The Avatar Symbols depict the earthbending form as the most rigid of all bending forms and of all the other symbols. This is in line with the element it represents – Earth.

Earthbending originated in the Earth Kingdom with the first earthbenders ever being badgermoles. As we see with the form in the Avatar Symbols, earthbending requires a special connection with the earth that can be achieved through neutral jing, listening and even seemingly doing nothing and waiting for the right moment to strike.

Much like waterbenders, earthbenders gain an advantage or disadvantage in battle based on the amount of earth around them, though the conditions are not as extreme with them as they are with the waterbenders. Because of their element’s stability and its stress on neutral jing, earthbenders stand their ground, absorbing or intercepting attacks until they completely overwhelm their opponents.

Unlike the other bending arts, earthbending’s strength equally lies in both offense and defense. Earthbending is in stark contrast to airbending as airbending’s emphasis is on evasion and mobility while earthbending’s emphasis is on fortitude and strength. The sub-skills for earthbending are seismic sense, metalbending, and lavabending. Earthbending is the element of substance, and its season is spring, as we see in the Avatar Symbols depiction.

Avatar Symbols: Firebending

Firebemding

The firebending symbol as it appears with the other Avatar symbols.

The people of the Fire Nation use Firebending. It is one of the most aggressive bending arts in the history of the four nations. Dragons were the first firebenders and they subsequently taught the Sun Warriors; who then passed down the form to the people who eventually became the Fire Nation.

However, these people eventually deviated from the main source or bending form of firebending; instead of using hatred as the fuel for their bending. They even began hunting down dragons as a rite of passage and to show their bending skills.

As the element of power, firebenders have to be able to maintain a constant source of energy and balance in battle, unleashing a volley of direct, successive attacks. Unlike other benders who depend on external sources of their elements to bend, firebenders do not need to.

They can create fire using their internal heat source in addition to controlling already existent flames. Skilled firebenders are able to fly using powerful jets of flames. Due to its solar affinity, firebending is stronger during the day and at its full power at noon. However, just like the lunar eclipse renders waterbending ineffective, firebendending is rendered completely ineffective during a solar eclipse.

Celestial Affiliations

When a comet passes close to the planet, the power of a firebender is greatly increased. Firebending is relatively simple and has a direct style; which contrasts greatly with the changing and fluid style of waterbending. A notable feature of special firebenders is the ability to create a hotter, blue fire; and the only known Firebender to use or demonstrate this extra powerful flame is the Fire Princess and eventual Fire Lord Azula.

The sub-skills for firebending are combustion bending, as well as the generation and the redirection of lightning. Firebending is the element of power, and its season is summer.
