Avatar Icon: The Logo for The Greatest Cartoon Made

The Avatar Icon or the Avatar logo is the text used to represent the show. True fans of the show love everything about the show, down to the icon used to represent it.

Who is The Avatar (Avatar Icon)

Avatar, the Last Airbender series was the birth of a fantastic franchise. It has gathered fans all over the world since its debut and has continued to create memories for children, adults, and young adults all over the world. When Netflix announced the live-action series that was to come, fans were more than excited.

The Avatar is a reincarnation of the Light spirit Raava, fusing with a human being named Wan. He became the first Avatar. He, through resilience and determination, was able to do what no one else had done or thought about doing before in all of history. His uncommon thinking led him to become the first Avatar. Avatars are reincarnations of that first life Wan lived. They act as mediators and bridges between the spirit and the physical world.

Wan was the first Avatar, and he lived about ten thousand years before Aang and Avatar Korra. He was banished from his home and sent into the then forbidden forest. The forest was inhabited by spirits, and at that time, the balance was very shaky, and relations between humans and spirits were not at their best. He eventually learned to coexist with the spirits. He made it his life’s mission to help bring balance between them and the rest of mankind. This eventually led to him becoming the first Avatar.

He met Raava for the first time and made the mistake of freeing Vaatu from her hold.

After seeing his mistake, he helps her fight off the dark spirits; Wan decides to help Raava further by fighting Vaatu. To do this, he asks the air lion turtle for its power. No human had ever held two elements before, but Wan insists that he is unlike any other human and says he can do it.

The lion turtle decided to give him the power of the Air; however, Raava would have to hold the power for him until he mastered it.

Raava gave the element of Air to Wan by passing through his body and combining their energies. Although a dangerous undertaking, Wan survived the ordeal, and the small yet unlikely alliance set out to find the water and earth lion turtles to receive the last two elements.

Wan and Raava work together to master all four elements, and thus, the Avatar was born.

The Avatar has the power to master all four bending disciplines and become the most powerful being in the universe. The Avatar uses his or her power to keep balance in the four nations.

Avatar Icon

The Avatar icon is a representation of all four elements and all four nations. As the Avatar, the master of all the four elements, he or she must wield it with great responsibility. They must learn the disciplines of all four, balancing it within themselves in harmony. It is only the Avatar that can do this. The designs on the Avatar icon are four in number. They represent all four elements starting with Earth, Water, Fire, and Air.

Earth Kingdom (Earth)

People of the Earth Kingdom are gifted with the ability to control this element. The element Earth. As General Iroh told Zuko. The people of the Earth Kingdom are diverse and strong. They are both persistent and enduring.

The Earth kingdom is one of the four nations in the Avatar World.

The kingdom spans an entire continent as well as several subsidiary islands. It is also known as the largest and most populated sovereignty in the world and encompasses much of the eastern hemisphere. The Earth kingdom operates as a monarchy under the rule of a king or queen, although the 54th Earth King, Wu of the Hou-Ting dynasty, announced his intention in 174 AG to abdicate the throne in favor of splitting the nation into independent states with democratically elected leaders, akin to the political system used in the United Republic of Nations. This was an action that was necessary for peace as he grew to understand that the people were strong and didn’t need the monarchy to oversee their affairs.

They also adhere to a philosophy of peaceful coexistence and cooperation with the other nations of the world. Earthbenders use their abilities for defense and industry, as seen in Avatar Korra’s Legend. They also fiercely defended their cities against Fire Nation attacks during the Hundred Year War. The Earth kingdom also has a large economy based on agriculture and limited industry, though it is not as economically powerful as the Fire Nation, which benefits from advanced technology.

One of the first Earth Benders were two lovers named Oma and Shu, who learned directly from the Badgers. Oma used it to stop a war between both villages. She created a new city and named it after both of them, Omashu.

Water Tribe/Nation (Water)

The water tribe is divided into the South Pole (Southern water tribe), the North Pole, and Foggy Swamp. As Iroh told Zuko while trying to teach him a new element; The people of the water tribe are capable of adapting to many things. They have a deep sense of community and love that holds them together through anything.

Water tribe is one of the four nations and one of the people with a bending discipline. The water tribe people have the ability to control water.

Water Tribe is also a collective term for the nation of people who practice the art of waterbending.

There is also a small community of water benders that populate the swamp. The people of the Water Tribes are referred to as “Water Tribesmen.”

Fire Nation (Fire)

The Fire Nation is one of the world’s four nations and five sovereign states. It is an absolute monarchy that is led by the Fire Lord. It is home to most fire benders. These are people with the ability to create and manipulate the element fire. Geographically, the nation is located along the planet’s equator in the western hemisphere and is composed of several islands, named the Fire Islands.

As General Iroh said to Zuko when discussing the nature of the fire nation. The people of the fire nation have the desire and will and the energy, and drive to achieve what they want.

The people of the Fire Nation are referred to as “Fire Nationals.”

The Fire Nation is the second-largest nation in terms of area, following the Earth Kingdom, while its economy is the most powerful in the world.

Air Nomads (Air)

The air Nomads of the air nation are one of the four great nations, as Iroh said to Zuko on the nature of the Air Nomads. He said they detached themselves from worldly concerns and found peace and freedom. Air Nomads is a collective term for a group of people who have detached themselves from worldly concerns. They are a monastic order who practice the bending discipline of Air.

The Avatar Icon has these four bending nations present on it. It is a depiction of how the Avatar is the unity of all four nations.

And every Airbender used to have a partner bison that they got in their childhood.

Before the 100 Years War, most of the Flying Bisons used to live in the Air Temples. And they were thought to be the only way of reaching the Air temples. Even when Katara revealed about the genocide of the Air Nomads, Aang did not believe it initially. And replied to Katara that the only way to reach the Air temples is through a flying Bison. So the Air Nomads can not be killed. But on reaching the temples and witnessing the ruins of once-great and full of life Air Temples firsthand, did Avatar Aang accepted the fate of his people.

Because of his loyalty to The Avatar and his team Appa helps the team quite regularly. Appa has shown signs of intelligence by locating Aang on himself during their separation. He also yawns as a sign of approval or makes sounds as well whenever he is asked a question. The yawns or the sounds indicate his approval.

He also licks the characters that he deems trustworthy. And this personality trait of Appa plays a very crucial role in Zoku‘s acceptance by the Team Avatar. Overall, Appa also has a very cute and likable personality but he is also not shy of flexing his muscles whenever the team is in danger.

Abilities of Appa

Appa possesses very unique abilities that make him a worthy companion of the Avatar on his journey. Not only has he saved Team Avatar numerous times but has also safely escorted them to safety as well. In this section we will discuss some of the most notable abilities of this amazing Flying Bison.

Airbending

The most important ability of Appa is the ability to bend Air. Appa mostly uses his tail to bend the air and is able to fight at very high altitudes to avoid any type of danger. Red and White Lotus: Two faces of the same tile

In the Avatar Universe, several very important organizations take part in world politics, such as the Dai Li agents. But there was one that stood out above the rest, because for centuries it was composed of wise masters from all over the world: The White Lotus. However, softer times changed things, and new organizations with different paradigms like The Red Lotus emerged.

The White Lotus impressed all the fans, after more than 100 years of inactivity. They stepped up to the plate, and tipped the scales in the Avatar’s favor in the final battle releasing Ba Sing Se. For that reason, in The Legend of Korra, The White Lotus surprised everyone again when they had almost no influence on the Avatar’s numerous battles, and seemed to be a shadow of their former glory, so how did they end up like that? Did everyone agree with the path The White Lotus took? What is the Red Lotus?

What is The White Lotus?

The Order of the White Lotus for centuries went unnoticed and only acted when the avatar in turn needed it. The best and wisest masters in the world composed the order. So its activities and importance were beyond borders and allegiances to the Four Nations. Its original mission was to help the avatar bring balance to the world. It functioned when necessary as a small private army. Their most important function was to find, protect and even train each new avatar. Members identified to each other with a white lotus tile from the popular board game called Pai Sho.

They revealed themselves to the world at the end of the 100 Years War. A group with the most notable members of the White Lotus composed by: Iroh, Jeong Jeong, Pakku, Piandao, and King Bumi attacked a large detachment of the Fire Nation army without reinforcements. With a great show of power, they freed Ba Sing Se, the capital of the Earth Kingdom. While the Avatar team took on Azula and Ozai.

Thanks to their victory, the White Lotus established themselves as a recognized force for good. Considered to have an eye to the future. Unfortunately, the change in the White Lotus’ leadership did not benefit them after Iroh ascended to the Spirit’s World.

White Lotus in Korra’s Times (Red and White Lotus)

Decades after the last battle of the 100 Years’ War, The White Lotus became a publicly known organization. They dedicated to serve the avatar and his family, as a sort of personal escort.

When Aang passed away, it was them who took it upon themselves to search for the next incarnation of the avatar. When they found Korra. They were surprised by the great power she demonstrated at a young age. They took it upon themselves to care for her, guide her and train her.

Unfortunately, the new generation of The White Lotus is considerably weaker. Most of the members are young and inexperienced and the older ones have roles closer to being more advisors than warriors.

The young members of the White Lotus seem unable to cope with the threats of the modern world and the others are too old for active service.

Amon and the Equalists defeated them with terrible ease, when they attacked the Air Temple island. Besides, they are no match for the Red Lotus.

We believe that for a time, Katara, Zuko, and Toph were part of the White Lotus. During that time they met promising young masters, but with their withdrawal, these boys were exposed to the bad influence of the Red Lotus.

What is the Red Lotus?

Originally, The Red Lotus in Avatar comes from the White Lotus. Xai Bau , a member of the White Lotus, founded the organization. Since the society changed its direction after the events from ATLA. Xai Bau felt disgusted for being just a mere bodyguard for the Avatar. Many members shared this feeling and even Iroh The Grand Lotus realized about this and tried to reconcile. However, tensions inside the order increased until this faction deserted.

The Red Lotus’ main goal was to bring freedom to the world by dismantling world governments. They intended to unify the world. They wanted to reconnect the spirit world and the human world by using the Avatar to open the spirit portals. The White Lotus was aware of this. They understood their point of view, but didn’t realize The Red Lotus would become an extremist, terrorist group.

The creation of this different Lotus group may have been one of the reasons why The White Lotus deteriorated. The new organization was more attractive to more powerful young people. It was similar to its counterpart in previous years, it was kept underground. We know that Zaheer, Ghazan, and Ming-Hua once had some relationship with the White Lotus. But since they did not have the same ideas, they parted ways for good.

The Red Lotus tried to accomplish its plan trying to kidnap the Avatar twice. First, when Korra was still a baby. Zaheer, Ghazan, P’Li, and Ming-Hua tried to kidnap her. They wanted to indoctrinate her with their organization’s ideology to reverse Avatar Wan’s actions from the past. Avatar Wan did not only separate Raava and Vaatu, the spirits of light and darkness. In addition, he also divided the spiritual and physical worlds. To the eyes of The Red Lotus, those actions had brought imbalance to the world.

Kidnap The Avatar (The Red and White Lotus)

Toranq, Tenzin, Sokka, Zuko frustrated their first attempt to kidnap Korra. So they incarcerated the members aforementioned in maximum security prisons until the Harmonic Convergence in the year 171 AG.

The main members of the Red Lotus escaped and tried to kidnap Korra again, with a slight difference. Since Korra was a grown-up by that moment their plan to implant their ideology on her was no longer viable. They decided to kidnap her to induce Korra into the Avatar State to assassinate her, and put an end to the avatar cycle. While The Red Lotus tried to accomplish its main goal. They didn’t lose time causing instability everywhere they went to the point they suffocated to death the Earth Queen.

Besides, Zaheer, Ghazan, P’Li, and Ming-Hua we could see other members from The Red Lotus during TLOK like Aiwei and Unalaq. However, since The Red Lotus is a secret organization we don’t know how many members there are hidden or if they are going to counter-attack again in the future.

As we could realize given this information both organizations had the same origin. However, The Red Lotus diverted from the righteous path when they decided to start terrorizing to accomplish their plans. Anyone could agree with either organization but as we know the end doesn’t justify the means.

Seductive Sokka

We all know Sokka doesn’t exactly have a perfect record when handling girls. And I know that’s one other girl apart from Sukki to draw that conclusion, but we can still say he is a funny one to watch.

Seductive Sokka is Sokka from the scene where he had prepared a romantic evening in his room for Sukki and himself. Zuko barges in, causing Sokka to eventually swallow the rose stalk he was hoping to welcome Sukki with. Okay, I’ll say it. That’s a plus for the guy who is weird with girls. This is definitely a fan favorite moment of Sokka being in his best self.

Sokka With Hair: Blushy Dreamy Face

In this picture, we see Sokka with a blush and a dreamy look on his face. Few things or people can make him have this look. The image shows Sokka practically drooling over Yue after setting a date with her to do an activity together. The smooth guy, that one.

This is soon after their arrival at the north pole. He is wearing his water tribe outfit but with a little more padding this time for the intense cold of the North Pole. We have all had this type of dreamy eyes or dreamy look at some point or can relate to it. Is Love a beautiful thing or what?

This scene is after Roku showed Avatar Aang his whole life and how Sozin betrayed him even if they grew up best friends. He also told them about how Monk Gyatso, his best friend as a young Avatar, was also Roku’s very good friend as well. Toph, emotional and grateful for the friends she had come to find in team Avatar.

The Dark Avatar

The Dark Avatar: Who Is UnaVaatu?

The Dark Avatar was first introduced in The Legend of Korra. This is the sequel to the Last Airbender series that aired on Nickelodeon.

The Dark Avatar was created when Unalaq fused with Vaatu, the dark spirit in order to become a new type of Avatar. A Dark Avatar that was meant to usher the world into a new era of darkness. As Chief Unalaq said to Avatar Korra. ” When Harmonic convergence comes, I will fuse with Vaatu and together we will become a new Avatar, a Dark Avatar.”

The Dark Avatar, also known as UnaVaatu is the result of Unalaq fusing with Vaatu. This Dark Avatar eventually gained an enlarged form as the world had never before seen something of that nature. Unalaq meant to usher the world into a new and darker era until both himself and Vaatu were defeated by Korra and Raava, the light spirit.

Unalaq And His Evil Ways

Unalaq, the Chief of the northern water tribe, a man who had great spiritual enlightenment sought to change the world by fusing with the dark spirit Vaatu. About ten thousand years prior to this era, Avatar Wan, who at that time was just known as Wan was able to defeat Vaatu.

Wan made the grave error of freeing Vaatu from Raava’s grasp when he noticed them fighting. Vaatu had told him that he had been tortured for thousands of years by his assailant, who was Raava. Wan, in an attempt to be a noble defender, fire bent at Raava, freeing Vaatu from Raava. It didn’t take long for him to realize what he had done and sought to rectify this.

He went on a journey where he acquired all the four elements and spent years mastering how to control them. At that time, Raava told him that he could not hold all the four elements in one body. He needed the physical endurance to be able to do this. He attained this and during harmonic convergence, he fused with Raava permanently in order to defeat Vaatu. He succeeded in doing this, caging Vaatu in an elemental cage, in the tree of time

Unalaq sought to recreate this occurrence by doing this with the Dark spirit Vaatu, thus, becoming a Dark Avatar.
The Dark Avatar aims to reunite the physical and spiritual realms. This is something that Avatar Wan made to be separate when he noticed that spirits and humans did not seem capable of coexisting.

The Dark Avatar as well wants to usher in a new world order of ten thousand years of darkness.
Unalaq and Vaatu were eventually defeated and killed by Korra as an astral projection. This was during the Harmonic Convergence of 171 AG] With his spirit purified, the Dark Avatar Cycle was ended before it began, although Vaatu would eventually regenerate within Raava. This is as the cycle goes, one not completely dying and springing up within the other within the course of the next ten thousand years.

History Of The Dark Avatar

How did the Dark Avatar come to be?

When Unalaq was young, he joined a rogue group, aimed at restoring the world to the natural order of things. Their idea of the natural order is chaos. They are a group called the Red Lotus. Unalaq eventually learned about the two spirits, Vaatu and Raava. He did however believe that the spirits should coexist with humans.

After learning the history of how the Avatar came into existence, Unalaq still strongly believed that humans and spirits should co-exist. He believed that despite there being an Avatar, it should be possible. This was contrary to Wan’s idea to separate the two species by closing the spirit portals.

As he grew older, Unalaq came up with a plan to achieve his goal. This was to free Vaatu during the next Harmonic Convergence and fuse with him in order to become a Dark Avatar. He created this plan that went contrary to the Red Lotus’ goals of destroying the Avatar and the Avatar Cycle altogether.

As time went by, he would later betray the organization in order to pursue his own goals. He also carefully covered his tracks and conspired with Vaatu to pursue this goal.

As time went by, he was able to manipulate Avatar Korra into opening the spirit portals in order for Vaatu to free himself. This was all part of his plan to fuse with Vaatu and become the Dark Avatar.

After Vaatu escaped from the Tree of Time, he was able to fuse with Unalaq, using the overlap of energy from the two spirit portals. This was during the harmonic convergence in 171 AG. This fusion process created the Dark Avatar.

Who is the Dark Avatar?

Dark Avatar vs Light Avatar

The resulting process created the Dark Avatar. Much soon after this, UnaVaatu began to promptly battle the Avatar for the fate of the world.

Despite the years of mastery from Korra and a strong showing from both Avatars, Unalaq, having much more bending discipline and endurance, managed to subdue Korra. At this point, Vaatu emerged from his mouth, latched onto Korra’s face, and pulled Raava out of Korra’s body.

With the use of his water bending, which had been enhanced with Vaatu’s dark energy, Unalaq was able to destroy Raava. Thus, he severed Korra’s connection to her past lives forever in that process. After he had defeated Raava and thus was no longer hindered by the influence of light in the world, the Dark Avatar, Unalaq, and Vaatu grew significantly more powerful. This was displayed by the Dark Avatar growing significantly in size to a height several feet taller than it was when it battled Korra.

After he had grown drastically, he then went ahead to declare the era of the Avatar to be over. The Dark Avatar used the spirit lights to transport himself to Republic City. Here, he promptly proceeded to begin wreaking havoc on the city’s infrastructure using vine-like projections.

Despite heavy artillery that was brought in by the United Forces, the Dark Avatar was able to use enhanced water bending to scatter the battleships as well as knock the lead police airship and a formation of biplanes from the sky, prompting President Raiko and Chief Lin Beifong to evacuate.

Korra, refusing to give up began to fight back. She later finds out that a portion of Raava is in her, although very weak. She was eventually able to defeat UnaVaatu.

Hama (Avatar): The Creator of Bloodbending in Avatar

In the world of Avatar, there is something we can’t ignore. Bending is incredible. Having control over one of the elements brings some major advantages, but looking at all the different variations of bending it is clear that some are much more powerful than others. Just by looking at masters like Hama, we distinguish one bending style that is better than the rest. The art of bloodbending is not only creepy but incredibly powerful. Trying to fight a bloodbending master is even deadly. In today’s post, we will discuss how Hama showed us what we consider to be the most powerful bending in Avatar.

How Hama Extended Bending in Avatar

Avatar did an excellent job showing how the elements adapted and evolved. The four primary elements eventually got a nice addition to them with a little extra flair, but after examining all the different and unique bending styles we have concluded that bloodbending is the most powerful. We’re not just saying that because a creepy old lady is manipulating the fingers of those who write on this blog but because there are many proofs along with the show.

When people talk about the most powerful bending styles they often overlook water when comparing it to fire or earth, but after watching the show many times we have a new appreciation for waterbending. This style can be devastatingly powerful if used correctly. It also provides strong defense as well as healing abilities, which gives waterbenders a great advantage.

With this, it is no wonder that their evolution was one of the best and scariest.
It seems that every improvement or evolution in one of the primary bending styles comes from a great trauma; Zaheer learned to fly after watching his beloved P’Li explode. Toph invented metal bending after being confined in a cage. So how did bloodbending begin? That’s where Hama comes in.

The History of Hama

Hama was a waterbender from the southern water tribe that the fire nation captured in a raid, imprisoning her for many years. The fire nation was quite cunning when it came to controlling their prisoners. They made sure to keep certain elements away from the waterbenders and took extra precautions with them. For example, they purposely kept humidity to a minimum and chained their arms and legs when giving them water to drink.

Hama was subjected to horrible conditions, but she would not stay that way. Each month Hama felt stronger because of the full moon and she realized that if she escaped it would be during one of those nights. She discovered that during the full moon she could manipulate the bodies of the elephant rats around her.

Controlling the water in their blood, she didn’t care how brutal or unethical it was. She was consumed by the feeling of revenge. So, even though it took her years of practice, only being able to use her power to its fullest on full moons. Hama developed her skills enough to become a full-blood master to then control the guard of her cage to free herself.

It was not enough for Hama to escape and return home. She moved to a village in the Fire Nation where every full moon she controlled the villagers in the village and kept them in chains as the Fire Nation did to her.

Introduce Team Avatar to Hama

When Team Avatar showed up in the village Hama wanted to make Katara his heir and pass on his new waterbending ability, but Katara recognized how dangerous it could be. She watched Hama drain the life from nearby objects to extract water from them and eventually saw her reveal her true intentions.

Although Katara was initially against something as cruel and unethical as bloodbending she had to subdue Hama with bloodbending to save Aang and Sokka. This fight means a lot on a narrative level if we think for a moment that Hama’s bloodbending was so powerful that it incapacitated the avatar instantly and almost killed him. That’s why Katara had to resort to bloodbending to stop Hama.

Katara had to do something evil to prevent something eviler, this makes bloodbending so dangerous. Anyone who could handle it could win any fight and it would be tempting to use it to defeat her enemies by forcing them to retreat. Katara vowed she would never use it again, she recognized the danger and knew it was a dark bending style she shouldn’t mess with.

The Power and Dangers of Bloodbending

Although we know that Katara used it again while facing the man who killed her mother with Zuko. Katara used bloodbending on a full moon to unleash her fury when anger and rage got the better of her. She then paused to think about the morality of bloodbending, but it undoubtedly proved that she should not be messed with on any day, but especially on a full moon

There is a balance to bloodbending as with most of the powers from the show. It is incredibly dangerous and effective, so much so that only powerful waterbenders could use it, but moreover, it could only be performed on a full moon. But things change and if there’s one thing we’ve learned about bending in the world of Avatar is that it’s prone to evolution and drastic change. Change may start as an anomaly, but then it becomes something more powerful and generally accepted.

Hama and Her Legacy Continued Into Legend of Korra

In the Legend of Korra, we can see how a powerful crime lord in Republic City who adult Aang and his team had to deal with appeared. By that time bloodbending was forbidden in Republic City, but there was a growing group of waterbenders who could perform this ability in an even more dangerous way. Yakone, the crime lord we spoke of had taken bloodbending to the next level. Being able to wield it without a full moon.

This was a total game-changer, practicing bloodbending without a full moon removed the major restriction to the skill and suddenly it became the most powerful bending style. Although at first, no one could believe it was possible, Yakone’s entire defense at his trial said it was impossible to do bloodbending without a full moon, but the council led by Sokka cleverly pointed out that certainly, it should be impossible but they had already seen some strange things over the years. And that bending has always been able to evolve.

This led Yakone to fully unleash his power by bloodbending the room full of people, including Sokka, Toph, and Aang. All without moving his hands, so much power was incredibly dangerous in the hands of a criminal bent on ruling Republic City. So Aang knew what he had to do. Yakone almost finished off the avatar, but fortunately, the avatar state helped him out of that predicament. Aang restrained Yakone and ended up taking away his waterbending powers.

The Evil of Bloodbending Being Passed Down

We might think that this is the end of the antagonists using bloodbending, but after being defeated Yakone finally escaped from prison and fled to the Northern Water Tribe, where he had two sons: Noatak and Tarrlok who would become waterbenders. Yakone trained them in bloodbending to the point Noatak and Tarrlok, with their different shades would become antagonists to the avatar of the day.

Because of all this, we believe that bloodbending is the most incredible bending style, not only it is one of the most powerful, devastating, and deadly that can be applied to a person, but it also continues to grow and evolve. In a short period, we went from Hama using bloodbending on a full moon to take revenge on the Fire Nation to Noatak “Amon” using it to appear to remove control forever. All in less than 100 years.

The ability to incapacitate your enemies before they can attack could save many lives, but at a terrible moral cost. If a normal bloodbender like Yakone could control a room without using his hands how powerful would the avatar be if he used this ability? Could he control an entire city by entering the avatar state and bloodbending everyone?

Final Thoughts On Bloodbending & Hama

It sounds terrifying, but we consider that the story leaves us with a moral from the chapter in which we are introduced to the ability. Hama, as well as all the bloodbenders shown in the series, were blinded by power and although they were all incredibly powerful. The craving consumed them. Bloodbending is very similar to how Toph created metal bending. It helped to take the series to another level.

What do you think of bloodbending, do you think it is the most powerful bending in the world of Avatar?

Toph And Sokka: The 10 Best Moments Together

Toph and Sokka were integral members of Team Avatar. Over the series run, we see them get closer and closer; but on more than one occasion they were not just roommates. They were best friends.

Toph and Sokka had one of the best friendships on Avatar: The Last Airbender. They got along well; teasing each other, understanding each other and even protecting each other. At every turn, they had each other’s backs.

Of all the members of Team Avatar, Toph and Sokka seemed to be the closest. Toph was closest to Sokka, and Sokka the best. Some members of the fanbase are of the opinion that Toph had a crush on him.

Whatever the case may be, romantic or not; let’s take a look at ten instances where the Toph and Sokka friendship was at its best from the series.

1. Toph and Sokka’s Friendship At Its Best: When She Didn’t Count Him As A Fighter

When Azula, Ty Lee and Mai kept tracking the Avatar gang wherever they went; Team Avatar decided it was time to stop running and face them square on. Before they fought, Toph commented that they were three on three and could easily take on Azula’s group.

Sokka objected to the math. As he was the fourth person there, he told her that there were four people. Toph responded, telling him she did not consider him as a fighter because he could not bend. Sokka was offended by this, taking it very personally. He mentioned that despite the bending handicap, he could still fight.Toph didn’t let up though. She teased him back by saying “Okay, three on three plus Sokka”.

2. When Toph Appreciated Sokka’s Art

Sokka is often considered the comic relief of the series, so more often than not, he is not taken very seriously. We see this especially in Season 2, where the Avatar Gang reached Ba Sing Se in search of Appa. Sokka tried to contribute to the search by making a drawing of Appa to use as “Missing” posters. Everyone else made fun of his art, saying it was nothing like Appa.

It is here that Toph and Sokka’s friendship is really highlighted. Toph was the only one who appreciated his drawing; telling him that the drawing looked just like Appa to her. Sokka had begun to thank her before he realized that she was making fun of him; since she was blind and could not have seen the drawing.

3. Toph and Sokka’s Friendship At Its Best: When She Genuinely Missed Him

In the season 3 episode “Sokka’s Master,” when Team Avatar was in the Fire Nation, Sokka wanted to learn professional swordsmanship. There, he found a teacher for himself named Pian Dao. While he was away training for his new skill, the rest of the gang members became bored without his antics.

Toph said that she missed Sokka. When he came back, she turned away and blushed while telling him that she did not care that he was gone. Sokka, however, understood and said he was touched. It was just another instance when their friendship really blossomed.

4. When They Had A Heart-To-Heart Conversation

After Katara and Toph had a huge fight over Toph scamming Fire Nation citizens, Sokka pulled his friend aside to have a heart-to-heart conversation.

Toph and Sokka went on to have a very lengthy conversation about the state of things. Sokka opened up to Toph about Katara and how she had been such a source of strength for him. On her end, Toph also agreed that Katara was actually not that bad. Neither of them had ever opened up about something like this to anyone else. It was a great moment to share.

5. Toph and Sokka’s Friendship At Its Best: When Sokka Complained About The Dark

In the season two episode; “The Drill,” Team Avatar devised a plan to get inside the drill. Their plan was to stay hidden underground until the drill came directly above them and then sneak in once it did. Toph made a hole in the ground and everyone jumped in.

When she closed the hole, Sokka complained about how it was so dark in there that he could not see anything, forgetting that Toph was blind. Toph sarcastically shot back mentioning how much of a nightmare that must be. He realized his mistake and immediately apologized.

6. When She Almost Crushed Him

In the episode “The Desert,” Team Avatar got attacked by a horde of Buzzard Wasps at night. Since these creatures were flying ones, Toph could not see where they were, but she was still trying to help by bending rocks to throw at them.

She threw a huge boulder at one of the creatures and narrowly missed, crushing Sokka underneath it. She apologized to him, and he replied that he would take care of this problem. This indicated that he considered her to be close enough to him for him to not be offended by what she did. He perfectly understood her.

7. Toph and Sokka’s Friendship At Its Best: The Way She Clung Onto Him On Appa

There were several points in the show where Toph and Sokka would sit close to each other as they flew on Appa. Most of those times, Toph would hold on Sokka clinging to him, or would simply just link her arm with his arm.

Seeing them sitting together, just hanging out as friends and talking, was really an endearing sight to see. With scenes like those in the show, it was easy to normalize platonic friendships between two characters of different genders. Toph and Sokka’s friendship helped to make platonic relationships between friends of the opposite gender.

8. When He Took Her To Safety

In the episode “The Desert,” after Aang found out that the sandbenders had kidnapped Appa and muzzled him, he flew into a monstrous rage. He was so upset that he went into the Avatar state; and it looked like he was about to destroy everyone in front of him. Sand was flying everywhere as Aang rose into the sky. It was already difficult for Toph to see in the desert because of the sand, and now she was completely helpless. Sokka came to her rescue, taking Toph and running away from danger. It’s a testament to the Toph and Sokka friendship that in the face of danger, Sokka’s first instinct wasn’t to run away, but to save Toph. He could have instinctively run away to safety, but he didn’t.

9. Toph and Sokka Friendship At Its Best: When She Saved Him

In “The Serpent’s Pass” episode, Team Avatar had the task of walking across a very narrow and dangerous path to get across to the other side. As they made their way, some Fire Nations soldiers caught wind of them and tried to stop them.

One of the soldier’s attacks caused a huge amount of debris to fall. The debris would have fallen right on top of Sokka and buried him underneath, but Toph deflected it with the use of earthbending.

10. Toph and Sokka Friendship At Its Best: When They Were About To Die

In the final battle against the Fire Nation, Toph and Sokka were on a Fire Nation airship, fighting their army. While deflecting an attack from one of the soldiers, they fell off the side of the airship.

Sokka held on to Toph tightly as she hung in the air. Soon they were surrounded by the Fire Nation soldiers, and it seemed like they were going to be killed. Sokka could have saved himself if he had let go of Toph, but he held on to her and was ready to die with her. Yet, despite everything that happened between them, they still couldn’t let go of the awkwardness between them. Luckily, they survived the onslaught and went on to win the war.

Ursa (Avatar): What Happened To Zuko’s Mother

We see Ursa (Avatar) get banished from the Fire Nation in Avatar: The Last Airbender; and we don’t hear much about her for most of the series’ run. However, the follow-up comics answer what happened next.

Zuko lost his mother, Ursa while he was still but a young lad; and we don’t know much about why this happened – until the tie-in comics were released a couple of years after the show ended. We learn exactly why she disappeared – and what happened to her afterward.

As Fire Lord Ozai’s exiled son, Zuko spends much of Avatar: The Last Airbender acting as an antagonist towards Aang and his friends. This is because capturing the Avatar is the only way that Zuko can ever return to the Fire Nation. As time goes on, he redeems himself and ends up defeating his fighting alongside Aang.

Ursa (Avatar) History

Zuko’s mother is called Ursa (avatar), and she is the granddaughter of The Fire Nation Avatar before Aang; Avatar Roku. In The Last Airbender we see that she made some kind of deal in order to protect Zuko’s life; when his father was planning to kill him. Afterwards, she gets sent away from the Fire Nation.

However, the series of sequel comics written by Gene Luen Yang with The Last Airbender creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, which are set in the days after Aang defeats Fire Lord Ozai show an extra dimension to the story.

One of theseLast Airbender comics; The Search, details Zuko’s quest to find out what happened to his mother. He seeks to even be reunited with her.

Why Zuko’s Mother Ursa Was Banished

Zuko’s grandfather, Fire Lord Azulon, came across a prophecy about mixing his bloodline with that of Avatar Roku’s. He learned that it would produce descendants with great power; further securing his family’s place on the throne long after he passed. In response, he tracked down Ursa (Avatar), forcing her to marry Ozai; even though she was already betrothed to someone else. This man was named Ikem.

Azulon would end up doing himself in through his actions. When Iroh’s son died in the war, Ozai crossed the line; angering his father by asking him to pass Iroh’s throne birthright to him instead. As punishment for such a request, Azulon wanted Ozai to feel the pain that Iroh had felt of losing his firstborn son, and so he ordered Ozai to kill Zuko.

Upon discovering this, Ursa (Avatar) and Ozai made a deal. She would use her herbal skills to concoct a poison that was colorless and odorless, so that Azulon would be killed and Ozai could take his place as Fire Lord. Ozai agreed to this on one condition; after Azulon was dead, Ursa would leave the Fire Nation and never return. He requested this so that she could never use the same poison on him. A sad Ursa (Avatar) had no choice but to agree and was forced to leave her children behind.

What Happened To Ursa (Avatar) After She Was Banished

After Ursa avatar fled the Fire Nation Palace, she returned to the village where she was born. There, she met a man called Noren – who was actually Ikem. having asked a spirit called the Mother of Faces to change his appearance so he could escape Ozai’s wrath.

Ursa decided she would make a similar deal, but when the Mother of Faces felt the pain in Ursa’s heart she offered something extra: not only a new face but a new mind, where all her memories of her life as Ozai’s wife would be erased. Ursa made the difficult choice to forget her children along with the rest of her former life and was given a new face and a new name: Noriko. She and Noren lived in peace together for many years and had a daughter called Kiyi – Zuko and Azula’s half-sister.

Zuko Is Reunited With His Mother

Zuko first meets Noren and Noriko in The Search without realizing that they are actually Ikem and Ursa. After learning the truth from the Mother of Faces, he returns to the village and reveals to Ursa that he is her son. Ursa chooses to have her face and memories restored and she and Zuko are finally properly reunited.

Azula, unfortunately, doesn’t feel quite so warm towards her mother. Having been driven mad at the end of Avatar: The Last Airbender, she believes that Ursa has been secretly plotting her downfall all her life and is responsible for everything bad that’s ever happened to her.

Zuko manages to stop Azula from killing Ursa, and watches helplessly as his sister runs away. The Search ends with Ursa promising to tell Zuko everything about her life, starting from the very beginning.

Later in the comics, Ursa returns to the Fire Nation Palace for the first time since she was banished and finally confronts Ozai again – now powerless and locked up in the dungeons. He proceeds to threaten to destroy everyone she loves, but Ursa sees him for what he really is: “a small, small man.” She walks away, no longer afraid of her former husband, ignoring him as he impotently orders her to grovel for him.

Water

Katara from Avatar Last Airbender

Katara is a water tribe girl from the Southern water tribe. She is the last water bender in the south pole that existed in the Last Airbender series. She was present during the hundred-year war and helped the Avatar Aang bring back balance to the world by being his water-bending and helping him defeat Fire Lord Ozai.

Katara is a waterbending master. She was born in the Southern Water Tribe to Chief Hakoda and his wife, Kya. During her childhood, she was the only water bender living in the Southern Water Tribe. After losing her mother in a Fire Nation raid and her father left to battle against the Fire Nation in the Hundred Year War, she was raised by her paternal grandmother Kanna alongside her older brother Sokka.

As a young girl, Katara and Sokka went fishing in the icy south pole seas when a minor outburst from Katara caused a glowing iceberg to float up to the surface. She heads over to the little island that had been created, much to Sokka’s constant warnings saying they should go home, and she didn’t know what was in there.

Katara and her brother Sokka discovered the young Air Nomad Avatar, who was stuck in the frozen Iceberg. His name was Aang, and he had been frozen in the Iceberg with his bison, Appa, for one hundred years. In need of a waterbending master, the two of them left with Aang for the South Pole on a journey toward the Northern Water Tribe. This was to teach him the first element as the Avatar and get Katara a master as well.

Katara’s Early Life

Katara was born into the then dwindled Southern Water Tribe. She was born to Kya and Chief Hakoda of the southern water tribe. Katara faced the reality of her tribe getting raided. At the time of her birth, fifty years of repeated Fire Nation raids intended to capture and imprison the tribe’s water benders had left them devoid of benders.

She grew up in a time when the Southern Water Tribe’s defenses would have crumbled under the might of the Fire Nation. The tribe’s general inaccessibility and where they were situated which is the South Pole, and the Fire Nation’s perception that they were a non-threat meant that they were mostly left alone. Katara grew up within a loving, close family and community in her tribe, as Iroh stated. The water tribe people have a great sense of love and community binding them together, which Katara witnessed first hand.

When she was six years old, she broke a tooth on some seal jerky made by Ashuna.

When she was eight years old, her mother gave herself up to be taken and killed in her place. She was protecting the last water bender, which was Katara at that time.

Katara was having a snowball fight with her brother Sokka shortly before the raid that killed their mother.

Tragedy Strikes

Katara was eight when the Fire Nation raided the village again. They had been charged by Fire Lord Azulon to find and dispose of the last remaining water bender in the tribe.

During the battle, the leader of the raid Yon Rha, confronted Katara’s mother, who was taking refuge in the family’s igloo.

Sokka had told her to go back to the igloo. Seeking shelter with her mother, Katara ran back to her home and interrupted their exchange.

When Kya realized the intentions of Yon Rha, who had demanded that Kya tell him the identity of the water bender, Kya repeatedly denied the existence of that information until she eventually gave herself up as the last water bender. She had lied to protect her daughter, the last water bender in the Southern water tribe. Yon Rha would later find out that he killed the wrong person some years later as Katara came for his life.

Katara ran to get her father, but by the time they returned, Yon Rha had left, and her mother had been killed. The death of their mother had a deep impact on both Katara and Sokka. They both began to feel deep hatred and resentment toward the Fire Nation as a result of what had been done to their family.

Becoming a WaterBending Master

Katara was a fair water bender before she met Aang. The trio was to travel to the north pole to get a master for both Aang and Katara.

After their long and hard journey, the trio team finally reached the Northern Water Tribe. Here, Sokka and Katara were celebrated as kin from the Southern Tribe, and Aang was honored as a special guest, being the long and lost Avatar. It was decided that Aang would be taught waterbending by Master Pakku, but Katara was prohibited from learning combative bending on account of her gender.

This infuriated Katara so much, and just like her Gran, who was originally from the northern water tribe, she would not let their I’ll custom hold her down.

Katara and Aang decided on a plan where Aang would learn and teach Katara whatever he had learned by nightfall.

After Pakku had found out that Aang was secretly teaching his techniques to Katara at night, the master dismissed Aang as a student.

Resilience of Katara

At the palace, Katara pleaded with Chief Arnook for Pakku to take Aang back as his student. The master agreed to do so if Katara apologized. While Katara conceded at first, she renounced her apology and challenged the master to a duel after being patronized.

Although Katara was defeated, Pakku picked up her necklace, revealing that he had made it for Kanna sixty years prior. After a walk down memory lane, he decided to accept Katara as a student.

When the fire nation brought the war to the North Pole, Yue took Aang and Katara to the spirit oasis, where he was to meditate and cross over.

After Zuko unexpectedly arrived, Katara dueled him and was able to restrain him by freezing him in ice, but the banished prince overpowered her when the sun rose, taking her by surprise and kidnapped the Avatar. After winning the war, by defending the north pole, Katara became Aang’s master.

Katara and the Team Avatar continued to grow, even adding Zuko to its membership list.

What Did Katara Bring to The Team

Motherly Love

Katara was the glue for team Avatar because she was like the mother bear of the team. Sokka was all about strategy, Aang was a small boy, Toph was rough around the endges and Katara held it all together. The kids were travelling all over the world and had no parents around them. Katara would often fill that role.

There is an episode in Season 3 Where Sokka says that when he tries to think of his mom, all he can see is the face of his sister Katara. It just goes to show that when there mom died Katara became like his mother even though she is his younger sister.

Compassion

Katara is what made the group have a soft heart when they needed to have one. Her heart was used against her when the gang met Jet and the Freedom Fighters. Katara always had the largest heart on the team, but in the final season, you saw a woman who had been burned too many times.

The compassion that Katara had was often made fun of, but she allowed the group to operate in a way where they were always trying to do what was right. When someone would mess up she was always there to forgive because she could understand where they were coming from.

Unreal Waterbending

It’s easy to forget that Katara was an amazing bender. Her skills were out of this world and we saw some of the coolest water bending in the series come from here. She fought to be able to learn to become a master in the first place. If it were not for her, then Aang would not have become a fully realized Avatar.

Kanto Avatar
Earth

Kanto (Avatar): Lin Beifong’s Father

One major scoop in the entire Avatar world, spanning both the Last Airbender and the Legend of Korra shows is on who the fathers of Toph Beifong’s daughters are. While many have theorized that Suyin’s father is indeed Sokka; that door has been left wide open. In Lin’s case, we finally get a name: Kanto. Unfortunately, Toph is still adamant on not revealing the identities, so who exactly is Kanto avatar?

Kanto (Avatar): Who Is He?

For Lin Beifong, most of The Legend of Korra has her grappling with the terms of her parenthood, especially strained relationship with her mother. Many of the issues arising had to do with Toph’s parenting style, and her blatant refusal to tell Lin the identity of her father.

Anyone would be mad at that, so we don’t really blame Lin for cutting her mother off. However the shocker comes in season 4, when in a bid to foster some good will; Lin finally gets a name. Toph casually mentions that Lin’s father was a fellow who went by the name of Kanto avatar.

Toph’s daughters were fathered by two very different men, and her refusal to name drop or identify them really affected how they related. But why would she? What is so special thatToph would risk losing her kids over that would make her not identify their fathers?

The question of the identity of Lin Beifong’s father hangs over the air of The Legend of Korra’s first three seasons. We are introduced to Toph’s rather strange parenting style;  Toph’s daughters were raised with a hands-off parenting style, and they got very little supervision from their mother. Toph sought to give them the opposite of her strict upbringing under her parents; the prestigious Beifongs.

Interestingly, both daughters had different reactions to not being privy to their fathers’ identities. On one hand, Suyin builds a large family and a legacy that is meant to replace the one she did not have growing up. Lin on the other hand worked very hard to compensate for the distance between her and her mother by becoming the police chief of Republic City, following in her mother’s footsteps.

Kanto (Avatar) Is Revealed

In the The Legend of Korra episode “Operation Beifong,” appearing in season 4 as episode 10, Toph finally breaks her silence, and reveals that Lin’s father is a man named Kanto avatar. She does this in a conversation with Lin, Bolin, and Opal. However, she refuses to go into any more detail about Kanto Avatar’s identity. She only added that Kanto was a “nice man” but things between them in their relationship didn’t work out so they called it quits.

After Toph reveals Kanto Avatar’s name, she notices Lin’s breathing has changed, and asks why this is so. An infuriated Lin snaps back at her and states that her growing up without a father or never ever discussing him has affected her all along, weighing on her heavily. She also mentions that she has considered reaching out to her mother many times over the years but seeing her now reminded her instantly why she didn’t.

How Kanto’s (Avatar) Absence Created Conflict For The Beifongs

Lin’s primary conflict throughout The Legend of Korra is based around her relationship with her mother Toph. Lin and Suyin had difficult childhoods, thanks to uncertainties about their fathers and how Toph left them to their devices. Both of them subsequently rejected their mother and left the family.

As mentioned earlier, Suyin was a wild one because she had no supervision and ended up being arrested. However, she managed to turn her life around, devoting herself to building a family and a metal bending city for outsiders. Lin continued to try her tactics of impressing Toph to gain her attention and while doing so, she became the police chief of Republic City just like her mother before her.

Although she learns that her father’s name is Kanto Avatar; something that her sister Suyin never gets, knowing his identity doesn’t resolve Lin’s conflicted feelings about him, or even mend her relationship with her mother. Toph’s adamant and constant refusal to identify Kanto Avatar turns him into an enigma; one that will haunt Lin for the duration of her life.

She couldn’t understand why her mother kept him away, even more so when Toph reveals Kanto Avatar is just a man. She can’t understand why her mother kept him a secret. Eventually, Lin, Suyin, and Toph patch up and reconcile, after Toph admits that she was not the best of mothers to her children. She also admitted that she was nonetheless proud of the women that they had both become.

Additional Information On Kanto (Avatar)

Unfortunately, The Legend of Korra does not reveal any other information on Kanto. The tie-in materials do not even talk about that part of Toph’s life. At the end of the day, even though Lin learns about her father, she had one much bigger hurdle to get over; working on her relationship with her mother on her own.

She also had to come to terms with a lifetime of unanswered questions. She may have learned about her father’s name, but Lin Beifong needed to resolve her inner conflict to truly get over her rather tough childhood. Only then was she able to settle differences and reunite with Toph as well as her sister Suyin once again.

The Avatar Intro: One of The Best Cartoon Openers Ever Made

The Last Airbender series has one of the most iconic intros in animations. You’re mentally reciting it, aren’t you? Yeah. It’s that epic. The Avatar Intro is one thing that every fan of the show remembers.

Avatar: The Last Airbender’s opening Introduction visually tells you about the story and the world of the four nations. It introduces many important things and the need to know information about the series in such a short period of time. Not only does Katara’s narration explain the backstory of the world, but the sequence showcases four characters using their bending abilities. These are the original bending abilities that make up the four nations.

The Avatar Intro

“Long ago, the four nations lived in peace and harmony. But everything changed when the fire nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them. But when the world needed him most? He vanished.

A hundred years passed, and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar. An airbender named Aang. And although his airbending skills were great; He had a lot to learn before he was ready to save anyone. But I believe that Aang can save the world.”

This Introduction by Katara pretty much catches a first-time viewer that starts the series even at Book Three on what has happened so far. However, it would do them good to start from Book One.

The Introduction also showcases several cut scenes like four benders bending the four elements.

Their scenes are in quick succession, so it is not easy to identify them.

Who are The Four Benders in the Avatar Intro?

The first few scenes showcase these four benders, bending the four different elements skillfully. Katara carefully explains what had happened up until the moment when the boy in the Ice was found. The first few scenes show Aang demonstrating his air bending skills. It is then followed by Roku, demonstrating the bending powers of a fully realized Avatar. As the show proceeded, we got to find out the names of some of the benders in the intro.

First Bender

The first bender is Master Pakku. Pakku was first introduced in the last parts of Book one. This was when Sokka, Katara, Aang, Appa, and Momo got to the North Pole.

He came around the last part of the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

For a time, he was Aang’s and Katara’s waterbending teacher, although he originally was hell-bent on refusing to teach Katara. This was due to the traditions and customs that the north pole had. It was because of her gender, and this complicated their relationship. Eventually, Pakku recognized Katara’s abilities and tasked her as Aang’s next master soon after they left the northern water tribe.

Second Bender

The second bender in the credits was revealed as Azula. She was introduced around the last episode of book one. She became one of the main villains in the show and a prominent antagonist of the team Avatar. She demonstrated and exhibited great talent as a fire bender. She is far crueler than Zuko ever was and threatened both Aang and even Zuko himself.

It makes sense of her to represent the fire element in the opening credits, as not only is she talented with the element, but Azula also embodies the spirit of the Fire Nation during the events of The Last Airbender.

The other two characters in the intro, however, are not that easily identifiable. The earth bender was supposed to be Aang’s future earthbending teacher.

However, the creators of the series decided that a girl should be the one to help Aang master the element instead of the earlier proposed character.

So they created Toph and introduced her in book two, the second season of the series.

Later, the design of the credits was used for Roku’s earthbending teacher, Sud. In this case, the character in the Introduction came first because Sud was introduced and only appeared in season 3 of the show.

Finally, no one knows for sure the identity of the Airbender shown in the opening sequence.

Although at first glance, it might look like it was Aang, when closely looked at, a mustache is visible on the bender’s face. This also eliminates the possibility of it being Yangchen, the female airbending Avatar, as a possibility.

Some have speculated that the Airbender in the credits is indeed a younger version of Gyatso, Aang’s teacher and surrogate father, but this is not entirely confirmed. The original identity of the character was likely scrapped during the creative process, similar to how Sud and Toph transformed between Avatar: The Last Airbender seasons.

The narration changes as the series progress.

Narration for The Avatar Introd

Katara narrates the opening sequence. In the first episode, she states:

“Water. Earth. Fire. Air. My grandmother used to tell me stories about the old days, a time of peace when the Avatar kept the balance between the Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads. But that all changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar mastered all four elements. Only he could stop the ruthless fire benders. But when the world needed him most, he vanished.

A hundred years have passed, and the Fire Nation is nearing victory in the War. Two years ago, my father and the men of my tribe journeyed to the Earth Kingdom to help fight against the Fire Nation, leaving my brother and me to look after our tribe. Some people believe that the Avatar was never reborn into the Air Nomads and that the cycle is broken. But I haven’t lost hope. I still believe that somehow, the Avatar will return to save the world.”

In subsequent episodes, she says:

“Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed, and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an Airbender named Aang. And although his airbending skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he’s ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world.”

In the unaired pilot episode, she says:

“Water. Earth. Fire. Air. My grandmother used to tell me stories about the old days, how the four nations once lived in harmony, how everything changed once the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar mastered all four elements. Only he could stop the ruthless fire benders. But when the world needed him most, he disappeared.

Nobody had seen him for a hundred years until my brother, and I found him, an Airbender named Aang. The problem is, this Avatar is still a kid, and even though his airbending skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he’s ready to save anyone. The Fire Nation will do anything to capture Aang before he masters all four elements, so I must keep him safe until he’s ready to fulfill his destiny. My brother thinks I’m crazy, but I believe Aang can save the world.”

On the first page of The Promise Part One, Katara says:

“Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished.

A hundred years passed, and my brother Sokka and I discovered the new Avatar, an Airbender named Aang. Although his airbending skills were great, he had a lot to learn before he was ready to save anyone. But from the first day I met him, I believed Aang would save the world. And you know what? I was right.

With the help of his friends, Aang defeated Fire Lord Ozai and ended the Hundred Year War. Zuko, Ozai’s son and our ally became the new Fire Lord. Together with Earth, King Kuei, Aang, and Zuko promised to return the nations to harmony.”

Who Did Zuko Marry: The Last One Would Surprise You

Just who did Zuko marry? The question of who the Avatar The Last Airbender character ended up with after the show ended its run; has plagued the fan base since time immemorial. Unfortunately that question has never quite been answered; but there is a list of likely suspects.

Here’s a rundown of who it could have been to answer the question “who did Zuko marry?”

Who Did Zuko Marry

There is a huge gap between Avatar The Last Airbender and Avatar The Legend of Korra. What this means for many side characters and minor questions, is that they have been left unnoticed and unanswered. Some of them may indeed have been addressed in the follow up comics; such as The Search

The time-gap between the two Avatar shows, The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, means that many side-characters and minor questions about the franchise have been left unanswered. Some of them have been taken care of; thanks to the sequel series, but one of them still remains a mystery.

As we saw in Legend of Korra, there is confirmation that Zuko eventually had children, leading to the birth of his daughter Izumi, who in turn had two children of her own. We did meet one of them, a soldier by the name of Iroh; who is a nod to Zuko’s uncle and father figure, General Iroh in the Legend of Korra.

But Izumi’s mother has never been confirmed in official canon; and while the series ends with Zuko and Mai together – there is the possibility that it’s not who we expected. So, let’s take a look at all of Zuko’s past and potential love interests; and see if we can figure out the answer to a burning question, who did Zuko marry?

Who did Zuko Marry: Katara

With Katara and Zuko, we had one of the strongest ships in the franchise; albeit potential. They might have started out as fierce enemies; and we saw Zuko often attacking her. At some point, he resorted to even holding her hostage in an attempt to lure out the Avatar.

However, they both found a moment of empathy together when they were captured at the end of the second season. It didn’t last long, as this was lost when Zuko chose to side with Azula in the final battle. She would go on to be the last member of Team Avatar to trust Zuko and welcome him to their team in Book Three.

Despite the wishes of many fans, the relationship never happened; but it seemed as though it wasn’t just the fans that saw something. The  relationship was even teased as a concept in the farce stage production “Ember Island Players.” However, as we all know, Katara ended up with Aang, not Zuko.

Who Did Zuko Marry: Jin

Zuko was also briefly involved with a young woman from the Earth Kingdom named Jin. While he and Uncle Iroh were hiding out in Ba Sing Se as refugees; Zuko had assumed her behavior was because she was a spy. Iroh explained that instead she was simply interested in him. They even went on a date that turned out well; which is a lot when you consider Zuko being Zuko.

Unfortunately after they kissed, Zuko ended the date abruptly. They wouldn’t see each other until one more time in canon, after the fall of the Earth Empire in a short comic story titled “Going Home Again.” She saw him with Mai, and asked who she was. Mai used Jin to terrify Zuko with a knife-throwing trick. The moment then led directly to Mai and Zuko beginning a romantic relationship, suggesting that he moved past his brief flirtation with Jin and it’s unlikely she ever saw him again.

Who did Zuko Marry: Mai

Who Did Zuko Marry

Anyone who is anyone knows that Mai is Zuko’s most consistent romantic interest. She is one of Azula’s only friends; and we meet her as she is accompanying Azula during her hunt for Iroh and Zuko. She helps Azula take down the Earth Kingdom eventually — and upon Zuko being given the credit for taking down Aang, their relationship resumes in full swing and he is restored as the prince.

Their relationship is one of the only things that Zuko appreciates in his life once he returns to the Fire Nation, but he leaves her to join Aang and teach him how to Firebend before his battle with Ozai. Even though she was furious with Zuko, Mai refused to let Azula kill him. This landed her, along with Ty Lee, who refused to let Azula hurt Mai, in prison. However, she was released upon Ozai and Azula’s defeat. At the end of the series, we see her and the newly crowned Fire Lord Zuko resuming their relationship.

Their relationship initially continued into the sequel comics but ran into some serious problems quickly. When she discovered that Zuko had been meeting his father for advice without telling her, she became enraged and ended their relationship. She even tries to move on with another boy named Kei Lo

. But the discovery that he actually works for her father as a member of the terroristic New Ozai Society puts a serious strain on their relationship. The two were briefly able to make things work – especially as Kei Lo turned on her father and became an informant for Mai on their actions – and she even defended him to Zuko. But by the end of “Smoke and Shadow” the pair broke off their relationship.

She’s also been hinted to still have complicated feelings for Zuko. While they haven’t gotten back together yet in the sequel comics, there’s a good chance they resumed where they left off and eventually had a family together. She is the most likely person to be the mother of Izumi.

However, there’s one more person; a surprise candidate really, that could be the answer to “Who did Zuko Marry?”

Suki

Suki is the leader of the Kyoshi warriors when we are introduced to her in the series. She became a dedicated member of Team Avatar along the line; and even started a relationship with Sokka. While she and Zuko were enemies from the point that he and his men attacked Kyoshi Island; just like the rest of Team Avatar, she came to trust him after he helped rescue her from the Boiling Rock prison. By the time the series ended, Suki was a fully recognized member of Team Avatar and the leader of the freed Kyoshi Warriors.

The sequel comics show her and Zuko growing closer. As we see in “The Promise,” Mai arranges for the Kyoshi Warriors to guard Zuko when he becomes the target of an assassination plot. She became extra concerned about his welfare; especially since she was the one who revealed that Zuko had been secretly seeing Ozai to Mai. She felt incredibly guilty and began to offer emotional support to Zuko.

Although she is mostly supportive of Zuko getting back together with Mai, and it is clear she is still with Sokka; she and Zuko’s closeness in the sequel comics suggests they might be more compatible than anyone expected. It would be an unexpected swerve, but it could easily lead to the measured but determined Izumi. Maybe Suki indeed is the answer to who did Zuko Marry?

Aang Avatar State: Every time We See It In The Series

The Aang Avatar State is one of the most powerful modes that the character has been in over the years in the franchise. Aang is most powerful during the Avatar State, and we have seen him use it multiple times in The Last Airbender, and even in The Legend of Korra. Here’s what happened each time he used it.

All Avatars have the distinct ability to enter the Avatar state; which is pretty much a super mode that allows them to bend all the elements at the same time. But there is more to the Avatar state than meets the eye. The Avatar state lets an Avatar access past memories from previous Avatars – and perform feats of bending that are astronomical. After all, the Avatar state grants Avatars access to cosmic energy. What’s more, the Avatar state lets the current Avatar take the appearance of a past Avatar; just like we saw the Avatar state turn Aang into Kyoshi.

The power that comes with the Avatar State can be very dangerous, however, as only Avatars who master a balanced state of mind are able to control it. The Avatar’s eyes glow (in the case of Airbenders, their tattoos glow as well) whenever they are in the Avatar State.

Those who have mastered the use of the Avatar state only see their eyes glow at the moment they enter the Avatar State instead of continuously. Avatars might also enter the Avatar State by accident if they find themselves in danger or are in an extremely emotional place.

Throughout the three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Aang is shown using the Avatar State several times and for a variety of reasons. He entered the Avatar State to save his life and out of anger or sadness; but the Avatar State also came in handy purposefully. Aang eventually learned to master the State too and was shown using it again during The Legend of Korra. This is everytime that we see the Avatar State and what happened.

The Aang Avatar State: Aang’s Return After 100 Years

We first see the Aang Avatar state in the very first episode of The Last Airbender. Aang emerges from an iceberg after 100 years of being missing. We are told later that Aang only entered the Avatar State after he crashed into the ocean during a storm. The Aang Avatar State in this instance activated to save him and Appa from drowning. It left them in suspended animation for 100 years; until Sokka and Katara released them. Katara cracked the iceberg open, ending the Aang Avatar State and Aang’s time in the iceberg.

At The Southern Air Temple

The next time Aang enters the Avatar State is in season 1, episode 3, when he visits the Southern Air Temple with Katara and Sokka. It is here that he learns Firebenders killed his former teacher, Monk Gyatso, while Aang was in the iceberg. Aang’s emotions cause him to enter the State again, but Katara manages to calm him down with the reassurance that Aang isn’t alone anymore.

The Avatar State At The Fire Temple

We see the Aang Avatar State again during season 1, episode 8. This was the third time, but we got to see a new dimension to what Aang could do in the Avatar state. He takes on the form of Avatar Roku when the team visits the Fire Temple; which had a sanctuary that allowed Aang to connect to his predecessor. Roku then used his firebending to save Katara and Sokka and also destroy the temple.

During The Storm

Aang is next shown entering the State during a large storm in season 1, episode 12. The storm comes while Sokka is out on the sea with fishermen and all of their lives are put in danger. Aang and Katara fly through the storm on Appa’s back to save them and rescue Sokka and the fishermen. Unfortunately, the storm sends them all crashing into the ocean. Aang re-enters the Avatar State here to use Airbending to create a protective sphere around them so they don’t drown.

Aang Avatar State At The Northern Water Tribe

The next time we see the Aang Avatar State, we follow the team to the Northern Water Tribe; and it was epic. It was the greatest showcase of Aang’s ability up to that point when using the Avatar State. As the Fire Nation are invading the Northern Water Tribe, events lead to Admiral Zhao killing the Moon Spirit’s mortal koi fish form. In aanger *wink*, Aang enters the State, combining himself with the Ocean Spirit.

Together they formed a giant koi fish made of water. Aang then uses his increased power to wipe out the Fire Nation fleet, saving the Northern Water Tribe. This connection to the Ocean Spirit ends however, once the Moon Spirit is restored by Princess Yue’s sacrifice.

Aang Saves Katara

The first episode of season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender shows Aang entering the State again to save Katara. General Fong of the Earth Kingdom pushes Aang to learn to master the State and uses Katara as bait to trigger the State. Fong tricks him into believing he killed Katara and Aang’s emotions activate the Avatar State again. Aang can’t control it, even after Katara is confirmed to be alive, and destroys his surroundings.

Following Appa’s Disappearance

The Aang Avatar State comes up again at the middle of Season 2, as he confronts the sandbenders that kidnapped Appa. The Earthbenders stole the flying bison, and then sold him; but they do not know where he can be found. Aang is so infuriated with this that he enters the State immediately. Katara manages to calm Aang down before he hurts anyone, although he does destroy the thieves’ mode of transportation.

As Aang Fights Zuko & Azula

The season 2 finale of The Last Airbender sees Aang enter the State again. After not being able to let go of his attachment to Katara in exchange for cosmic power, Aang believed he wouldn’t be able to master the State. But, when a fight with Zuko and Azula turns dire, Aang decides to let go of Katara so he can save them all. Aang enters the Avatar State ready to defeat the Fire Nation, but Azula hits him in the back with her lightning. Katara manages to save his life by using spirit water to heal him, but Aang remains unconscious for weeks anyway.

Aang Avatar State Appears When Aang Fights The Fire Lord

We don’t see the Aang Avatar State in the third book/ third season except in the final episode; the series finale. Here, he battles Fire Lord Ozai in a final confrontation; as Sozin’s comet powers the firebenders all around them. The Aang Avatar State only appears as Aang enters it near the end of the battle. Using the Avatar state gives Aang a lot of power over the Fire Lord, but he doesn’t want to kill Ozai. Instead he exits the Avatar State before dealing a deadly blow. Aang then uses energybending to strip Ozai of his bending.

When He Takes On Yakone In the Legend of Korra

The last time Aang is known to have entered the State comes in season 1, episode 9 of The Legend of Korra. Aang is shown fighting a bloodbender named Yakone, who initially gets the best of the Avatar. Aang enters the State once more to chase down Yakone, and the power kicks in again when the bloodbender attempts to snap his neck. The Avatar State saved Aang’s life and allowed him to take Yakone’s bending abilities away.

Jin (Avatar): Zuko’s Other Love Interest

Jin Avatar was a girl from  the city of Ba Sing Se, who developed a crush on Zuko; while he and Uncle Iroh were hiding out in the city. She eventually went on to ask him out on a date, with help from Iroh of course. Like most of the people in the Lower Ring, Jin’s parents were refugees who had moved to the city. And though they had struggled for much of their lives,  they were strong – and had been able to provide for their family.

Jin (Avatar) – Date with Zuko

Jin Avatar

Jin was a frequent visitor to the tea shop where Iroh and Zuko were employed. This made Zuko conclude that she knew they were from the Fire Nation. Uncle Iroh knew better, however, and immediately contradicted Zuko’s suspicions; telling him that the girl had a crush on him.

Jin Avatar came up to the counter one day to pay for her tea and steal a chance to talk to Zuko; and after he introduced himself as Lee, she built up the courage to ask him out on a date. Left to Zuko, he would have said no, but luckily Iroh said that Zuko “would love to”. Excitedly leaving the shop, she said that she would meet Zuko there at sundown.

When Zuko emerged from the shop, his hair had been combed and cleaned by his uncle. Jin preferred his former hairdo; and immediately fixed it back to normal. She then pulled him along to a restaurant in the Middle Ring of the city. She tried to make light conversation as they were having an awkward dinner; so she asked some questions about Zuko and Iroh’s background.

Because they were in hiding, Zuko was not able to tell the truth; and so he just made up a story about travelling the world a lot as part of a traveling circus. Jin guessed that he was a juggler, and asked Zuko for a private performance, to which he reluctantly agreed. Of course, he failed miserably with this, but it only amused Jin. She then took him to the Firelight Fountain, one of her favorite places in the city.

Jin (Avatar) and Zuko Together At The Firelight Fountain

Jin Avatar spoke excitedly about how beautiful the fountain looked when the light of the lanterns reflected in the water. However, when they got there, the lights had not been on for a while.

Zuko noticed her disappointment, so he asked her to close her eyes; carefully using his bending to light up the lanterns. To thank him for lighting the lanterns, Jin turned to Zuko to give him a kiss, but Zuko interrupted her by holding a coupon for a free cup of tea in front of his face, to which she replied how sweet he was.

She proceeded to say that she had something for Zuko as well for which he also needed to close his eyes. Obeying her request, Jin softly kissed Zuko on the lips; a gesture he hesitantly returned, before backing away. When she asked what was wrong, he simply excused himself by saying that it was “complicated” and that he had to go, leaving her standing alone.

The Fall of Ba Sing Se

As the Fire Nation army marched into Ba Sing Se after it had fallen; Jin Avatar hid in the Pao Family Tea House.

The fall of the city came after Princess Azula’s successful Coup of Ba Sing Se. As the Fire Nation occupation began, Jin Avatar was with Pao and her family at Pao’s tea shop. They watched in horror, seeing the fire nation soldiers swarm the streets of Ba Sing Se. They eventually secured the city completely.

Shortly after the capital city fell, Jin Avatar saw Zuko once again; only this time he was walking with Mai. She addressed him as Lee, and asked him who Mai was. Zuko nervously mentioned that Mai was an old friend from his time in the circus; and that Mai’s occupation in the circus was as a knife thrower. Mischievously joining in on the lie, Mai offered to teach Jin how to throw knives; with Zuko as the target. She had Zuko stand in front of a fountain with fish from the nearby market on his head.

Mai then explained that the trick to throwing knives was all in the wrist; before accurately hitting the fish on his head with an icicle. Jin was amazed by the show of marksmanship; and she had her own attempt. Unfortunately when she threw the icicle; she almost hit Zuko, barely missing his head. This made him fall into the fountain.

Avatar The Search: Why The Tie-In Deserves A Movie

After the series came to a fiery end with Aang taking away the Phoenix King’s bending therefore ending the Hundred Year War; Avatar: The Last Airbender looked like it had covered all the primary bases. However, there were many others that had not been resolved, and so the tie-in comics were introduced. Avatar: The Search was one of them.

Without a doubt, Avatar The Search has to be one of the most important Avatar comics. Since the entirety of the Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra hit Netflix in May last year; there has been an increase in the franchise’s interest. This has awoken the section of fans that complain about not having received closure from how the series ended.

One great way to fix this problem would be to venture into the world of the comics; particularly Avatar: The Search, and bring it to life on the small screen. Turning it into an animated movie would definitely give it more exposure, seeing as a lot of people skipped the supplementary material. It has all of the closure any Avatar fan could ever need, and would definitely reach a wider audience.

Avatar The Search

As Avatar: The Last Airbender ended with Aang’s turn (on screen) as the Avatar; the fate of Azula and Zuko’s mother were left untouched. Fans will remember it to be a major plot point in the series; especially after it was revealed her disappearance was linked to Ozai becoming the Firelord after his father Azulon’s mysterious death.

Between 2008 and and 2013, five years would have passed before any questions to the aforementioned questions would be answered. The answers came in the form of the graphic novel; Avatar The Search, a three part followup to the show. It did the job of addressing exactly what fans had been wondering after the show’s end. It also addressed other subplots, such as the relationships between some certain characters.

One major reveal from Avatar the Search was that it solved the mystery of Zuko’s mother Ursa; details about her disappearance, and where she had been. It also revealed some long hidden facts about her marriage to Fire Prince Ozai.

Ursa’s Marriage To Ozai

So, it turns out that Zuko’s mother Ursa’s marriage to Ozai was a completely arranged one. This reveal might not be so surprising, considering that from what we know from the show; it was clear Ursa resented Ozai. And really, who wouldn’t?

All jokes aside, we see just what led to her getting married to the future Phoenix King. It turns out that Ursa is a direct descendant of the great Avatar Roku; Aang’s predecessor. Her marriage to Ozai was arranged by Fire Lord Azulon; as a move to mix his family’s bloodlines with another influential family’s blood. This was a ploy to ensure that his family would have continued rule over the Fire Nation.

Azula And Zuko’s Relationship In Avatar the Search

Zuko and Azula might have ended the Avatar series on opposite ends and as enemies; but they do have some touching moments in Avatar The Search. Even though they often turn out to be crazy. It’s clear that there is still some degree of love between them both. This is something that is increasingly important for everyone to see; not just because it helps Zuko’s character progression; but also because it is a dynamic that progresses the ever complex and tortured character that is Azula.

Avatar The Search: The Spirit World

This is another area of the Avatar mythos that gets explored in Avatar The Search is the spirit world. We see that spirits, just like humans, also have families and familial bonds. There are also some spirits that are so powerful and strong; that they can move between both the human world and spirit planes. We also see that some of the spirits have existed long before time itself started counting. An example of such spirits is one that we are already acquainted with in the series; Koh the Face Stealer.

He is one of these ancient and mysterious beings that was born outside of time to a very powerful god-like mother. Anyone who saw Koh in his only appearance in the show; was instantly marked with his terrifying nature – and he has since become a major talking point of the franchise. Through Avatar The Search, we learn more about Koh the Face stealer; where information on him was previously scarce.  One major reveal was that he is the son of the mother of faces; who in turn was the one who helped Ursa, Zuko’s mother disappear.

The Search finds a way to uncover more about what this memorable creature is by weaving it into the fabric of the central character’s lives. It would be the very first time a spirit would get this kind of treatment; something that would become more rampant in the Legend of Korra. Safe to say that Avatar The Search led the way in giving the world of spirits such depth.

Why A ‘The Search’ Movie Would Be Great

We have already seen Netflix attempt a number of adaptations; and two of those have been expansions of already completed Nickelodeon shows; Rocko’s Modern Life and Invader Zim. The result was two very okay films. Judging from this, we can expect that an on-screen adaptation of Avatar: The Search would be just as great. It most likely would be treated with similar care. It would also be in line to say that Netflix could be missing out on a great opportunity to bring one of Avatar’s most hidden gems to wider exposure. The franchise has an extensive fan base spanning millions all over the world; with more to join thanks to Netflix’s streaming and it would be an opportunity missed to not capitalise on this.

Contributing to the franchise through comic adaptations would not only be smart business; but also an opportunity to give fans something that they probably thought they would never get – closure.

In the Last Airbender series, Avatar Aang becomes trapped in a block of Ice which shielded him from danger for about 100 years. The series begins with the Avatar being freed by two water tribe folks. Two teenage siblings; one who threw a water bending fit to tear down a portion of the icy seas. Katara’s rage was what gave release to the Iceberg that was stuck under the sea.

We can’t look at Avatar quotes without eventually highlighting probably the most important one that’s stuck to all our heads as Avatar fans. This is the Avatar introduction. It started with Katara explaining the current situation and how we end up at that point, all up until the point when we are caught up and they meet the boy in the iceberg. The intros changed up a bit as the series progressed.

The narration changes as the series progresses.

Long But Still The Best Avatar Quotes

Katara narrates the opening sequence. In the first episode, she states:

“Water. Earth. Fire. Air. My grandmother used to tell me stories about the old days, a time of peace when the Avatar kept balance between the Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads. But that all changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar mastered all four elements. Only he could stop the ruthless firebenders. But when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years have passed and the Fire Nation is nearing victory in the War. Two years ago, my father and the men of my tribe journeyed to the Earth Kingdom to help fight against the Fire Nation, leaving me and my brother to look after our tribe. Some people believe that the Avatar was never reborn into the Air Nomads, and that the cycle is broken.

A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang. And although his airbending skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he’s ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world.”

In the unaired pilot episode, she says:

“Water. Earth. Fire. Air. My grandmother used to tell me stories about the old days, how the four nations once lived in harmony. How everything changed once the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar mastered all four elements. Only he could stop the ruthless firebenders. But when the world needed him most, he disappeared. Nobody had seen him for a hundred years, until my brother and I found him, an airbender named Aang.

A hundred years passed and my brother Sokka and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang. Although his airbending skills were great, he had a lot to learn before he was ready to save anyone. But from the first day I met him, I believed Aang would save the world. And you know what? I was right. With the help of his friends, Aang defeated Fire Lord Ozai and ended the Hundred Year War. Zuko, Ozai’s son and our ally, became the new Fire Lord. Together with Earth King Kuei, Aang and Zuko promised to return the nations to harmony.”
