Avatar Arena is a 2D action fighting game based on the world of the cartoon TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender. In this game, you will choose a nation to fight for, create your own bender, and defeat 20 benders in the ultimate world-wide tournament.

The game synopsis reads: “enter the wonderful world of the Avatar universe and create your own character to challenge the world’s best benders in Avatar Arena! Master your skills and become the ultimate master bender! Defeat other benders and master benders to prove that you’re the best!”

In Avatar Arena, you get to challenge the world’s fiercest Firebenders, the most agile of Airbenders, the toughest Earthbenders, the unpredictability of the ever fluid waterbenders and even the ever impregnable chi bending as you compete in the tournament with your pride, honor, and name at stake.

About Avatar Arena

Avatar Arena

Avatar Arena was an online game published by Nickelodeon, the company that produced the Avatar: The Last Airbender show; and its subsequent spinoff series, comics and graphic novels. The game can be classified under the game genre of Rumble. It is available on the internet platform as an online game.

Avatar Arena’s Objective

As seen from the game itself, Avatar Arena’s objective is thus:

“Decades prior to the Great War, all four nations were living in harmony under Avatar Kyoshi’s watch. In a competitive spirit, the best bending masters from all four nations gathered in a unique tournament. A tournament that would forever be remembered. Under Kyoshi’s watchful eye, all masters bent it out until the 20 best were remaining. Whoever would win against such opponents would not only win fortune, but eternal remembrance as well.”

Chi Attack

All fighters from the four nations can use this move. To access Chi, while the player continuously presses the down arrow key, they should repeatedly tap the space-bar at a fast pace to fill the “chi bar” and perform a specialized attack.

Avatar Arena Instructions

Before you begin the game, you are expected to choose an avatar from one of the four nations. You will also choose the name and look of the character. After this, there are two modes that you can choose to play in; either “Training” or “Tournament”.

As seen in the previous section above, there are three types of moves you can choose to perform; attack, defense, and chi attack. Both attack and defense moves have three different levels of complexity. The higher the level you use, the more damage or defense you can deal.

The chi attack on its own, takes a long time to charge up. However, it is a very powerful move to perform when it is used successfully. All four nations differ only in the appearance of the character and their attacks; in reality a specific attack provides the same effect for any nation, with the only difference being the aesthetic.

Game-play

Avatar Arena: Training Mode

The Training mode allows the player to practice and hone their skills before they enter the battle.

In the “Training” mode of the game, the player is set with the task of destroying a large statue as quickly as possible. There is no potential for any damage to the player’s health, as no enemy exists.

Avatar Arena Tournament Mode

In the “Tournament” mode, the player faces the twenty masters, all of whom are the twenty highest scorers in the game. The player must defeat the opponent in a best-of-three match to advance through the tournament; he or she scores more points for defeating the opponent more quickly. Of course, the opponents increase in difficulty as the player advances through the game.

At the end of each match (if won), the time taken to defeat the opponent is shown, as well as the points gained and total points scored. To win in the “Tournament” mode, the player must defeat all twenty opponents. This does not, however, guarantee them a spot as one of the twenty “masters”; they must score high enough to place in the top twenty high scorers.

Avatar Arena Tournament Locations

Each of the tournament’s fights takes place in different locations from the Avatar canon. They are separated by levels.

  • Battles 20 to 17 – Eastern Air Temple
  • Battle 16 to 11 – Earth Rumble VI
  • Battles 12. to 09. – Northern Water Tribe
  • Battle 08. to 04. – Fire Temple
  • Battles 03. to 01. – Ba Sing Se

Opponents To Face In The Tournament Mode

There are twenty levels, and the tournament plays in the style of the Mortal Kombat games. Each player uses their avatar to fight through 20 different opponents, till they reach the final level.

This is the order in which the opponents appears is thus:

20. Nomis – Waterbender

19. Wild Haggis – Airbender

18. Galtor – Earthbender

17. Cirederf – Firebender

16. Hamish – Earthbender

15. Master Sean – Airbender

14. Raidster – Firebender

13. Tween Sage – Waterbender

12. Pedoncuiak – Earthbender

11. Una – Waterbender

10. Hell-ene – Waterbender

09. FrostYvan – Airbender

08. Masterl Abdel – Airbender

07. ZukoGranGran – Firebender

06. StephBeauce – Earthbender

05. Bigoudididi – Waterbender

04. Madd Dogg – Earthbender

03. Fire Tongue – Firebender

02. Nhommos – Airbender

01. Torniol – Firebender

Interestingly, all the characters are male, except benders from the Water Tribe, which are female. The earthbenders, firebenders, and airbenders are all male. The airbenders in Avatar Arena all have tattoos, indicating that they were all masters. All the waterbenders in Avatar Arena have a water skin and a betrothal necklace, very much like Katara wore.

Prince Zuko Voice: Other Dante Basco Roles

Dante Basco is by now a household name. Many fans of the Avatar the Last Airbender recognize that name as the embodiment of the Prince Zuko voice. The show aired almost some sixteen years ago, but you would not believe that if you hadn’t seen it become what it is now.

Avatar the Last Airbender was a show that really captured the hearts of fans all around, particularly because of its stellar writing and visuals. However, more endearing to the series was perhaps the show’s voice acting cast. Consisting of voice actors that were as talented as they were gifted, the sights of the Avatar series made more impact with the sounds that accompanied them.

A fan favorite character in the place of Prince Zuko would have probably been a difficult task to take on for just any actor; considering the character’s complex backstory. But for Prince Zuko voice actor Dante Basco; it was just another day at the office.

Dante Basco has been attached to quite a few other roles that have lived on in the hearts of fans all over the world. Let’s take a look at what else the Prince Zuko Voice actor has taken on in his rather illustrious career.

The Prince Zuko Voice Actor Was The Leader Of The Lost Boys

Steven Spielberg pretty much rules the seventies down to the nineties, and it’s no surprise; he was good at what he did. Several pop culture titles owe their existence to him, but he also has a link to the Avatar series in the most unlikely manner.

Many people might not realize it, but Dante Basco, the Prince Zuko voice actor actually played the role of Ruffio; the leader of Steven Spielberg’s 1991 Peter Pan related flick “Hook”.  The role saw him perform alongside great industry stalwarts like the now late Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman, but even though he was a kid; the Prince Zuko voice actor shone with an amazing performance.

The Prince Zuko Voice Actor Appeared In Many Popular Sitcoms

From the seventies down to the two thousands, sitcoms were one of the most popular forms of entertainment all over the world. Many of these shows went on to become syndicated, being broadcast nearly in all countries in the world.

We had shows like the Cosby Show, Sanford and Son, Family Matters, Different Strokes and a host of many others take the screen by form. Dante Basco was not a stranger to this world, appearing in a number of sitcoms in the same talented fashion that he had when he got his big break in Hook.

On the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the man behind the Prince Zuko voice had a guest role as Kevin in the Episode: “Cold Feet, Hot Body”. On Hanging with Mr Cooper, he starred as Sammy in the Episode: “Seoul Shake”.

He also appeared in various other series; as Champ Hopkins in the Highway To Heaven episode: “Choices”, in CSI: Miami as Ruben Franco in the episode: “Happy Birthday”; Madrid in the The Suite Life of Zack & Cody,  in The Steve Harvey Show as Lee in the episode: “Guess Who’s Not Coming to Counseling”, in Moesha as Marco in 4 episodes, and in Touched by an Angel as Miguel in the episode: “Random Acts”.  He has had many other shows and television films under his belt as well.

The Man Behind The Prince Zuko Voice Is Also Jake Long

Jake Long: American Dragon was an animation phenomenon when it began airing on the Disney Channel. Mixing both culture and action, kids all over the world, as well as some older viewers dived into the world of Jake Long, a boy who had the ability to become a dragon; who was tasked with protecting the world.

Dante provided the voice talent for Jake Long, and just as he would fully capture who Prince Zuko was; he brought the eponymous character to life in the grandest way. Fans would remember Jake Long for a very long time after.

The Prince Zuko voice actor also reprised his role as Jake Long in another Disney spinoff; Lilo and Stitch: The Series.

Besides this role, he has also appeared in other cartoons and animations, such as Disney’s Kim Possible as Fukushima in the episode “Exchange”; in the Cartoon Network show Victor & Valentino and We Bare Bears as Javier and Master Cheddar respectively.  Basco has also appeared in Star Wars Rebels, voicing the character Jai Kell, and voiced Flash Thompson as well as Scorpion in Ultimate Spiderman.

He Is  A Video Game Hall Of Famer

Providing voice talents for TV shows and animated films is not all Dante can do. In the video game world he is a pretty big name; not just for voicing characters, but also as a gamer streaming gameplay on Twitch. He has appeared as a voice actor for the following games:

Video Game Titles Character

  • Def Jam Fight for New York Additional Voices
  • Saints Row Stillwater’s Residents
  • Scarface: The World Is Yours Additional Voices
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender Prince Zuko
  • Skate Shingo

  • Terminator Salvation Resistance Soldier
  • Final Fantasy XIII Cocoon Inhabitants
  • Skate 3 Shingo
  • Nicktoons MLB Prince Zuko
  • Avatar: The Legend of Korra General Iroh II
  • Mortal Kombat X Additional Voices

The Prince Zuko Voice Actor Is  A Web Series Regular

Dante Basco has also appeared in a number of various web series over the years; including some he owns. It is safe to say he is a regular on these as much as he is on regular screens.

Year Web Series Title Role Episode

  • 2013–21 JustKiddingNews Himself 6 episodes
  • 2014–19 Nostalgia Critic Himself 6 episodes
  • 2016–18 Camp Camp Billy “Snake” Nikssilp 3 episodes
  • 2016 Perfect-timing villain Agent Tanner 1 episode
  • 2017 Squad Wars Himself            The Try Guys 90s Boyband Music Video Challenge
  • 2018    Star Wars Galaxy of Adventures  Narrator 11 episodes
  • 2019 Rooster Teeth’s Hardcore Tabletop: World Series 5 episodes
  • 2020-21     Let’s Read Homestuck Rufioh Nitram 2 episodes
  • 2020 Death Battle Zuko Zuko VS Shoto Todoroki

He Was Also In Avatar: The Legend Of Korra

Seeing as Fire Lord Zuko was still alive at the turn of events in the Legend of Korra, it made sense that the Prince Zuko voice actor would reprise his role. However, the elderly Zuko was voiced by Bruce Davison. Dante instead voiced Zuko’s grandson; General Iroh II from his daughter, Fire Lord Izumi. It was a very nice nod to the predecessor series; showing that there had indeed been a passage of time. In truth, General Iroh II bore a strong resemblance to his grandfather in his youth.

Dante Basco brought to life one of our most beloved characters in the capturing of Prince Zuko’s voice; but it seems this is something of regular form for the voice actor. We have a lot to be thankful to him for in his actualization of Zuko; it could have totally gone another way with any other actor.

Koh (Avatar): Your Ultimate Guide To This Mysterious Spirit

Koh is a very knowledgeable and one of the most ancient spirits in the spirit world of Avatar. He is also referred to as “The Face Stealer” because of his ability to literally steal the faces of other people. Koh is a very mysterious character in the Avatar. And has a very strange type of sadistic personality in the first look. This is due to the fact that he can steal your face and use it whenever he wills.

In this article, we will explore all the information we have on this ancient spirit of the Avatar universe. We only see Koh once in the Avatar: The Last Airbender TV series. We will also elaborate on that encounter between Aang and Koh and what the end result of that meeting came out to be.

History of Koh In Avatar

Koh is the child of the Mother of Faces and is born to her thousands of years before the start of the hundred-year war. So Koh has had a vast experience of the Avatar world and has become one of the most knowledgeable spirits of the world. He is one of the first spirits that willingly started to interact with humans. And also assumed the role of judge, jury, and executioner for the people Koh believed had done wrong in the world.

He would also willingly chat with someone who is brave enough to face him. Although, most of these meetings would end up with Koh stealing the person’s faces. But this act of talking directly to humans by Koh faced a lot of criticism from other spirits. One of the most notable spirits that did not approve of such behavior by Koh in Avatar is Father Glowworm. Father Glowworm believed that such behavior is not a good example. And this is not how spirits and humans should casually interact.

Appearance of Koh in Avatar

Koh has been portrayed as a huge centipede-like creature with an extremely scary and intimidating look. On top of this huge centipede-like body was the face of Koh. He can change his face to any of the faces that he has stolen over the years. This is extremely scary for someone who faces him. Because Koh uses his face changing ability to intimidate that person so that he can steal that person’s face as well. But a white face with red lips and gray eye markings is the face that Koh wears most often. This is also known as the Noh Mask.

Personality

Koh has a very sadistic and intimidating personality. And he constantly tries to intimidate everyone who comes to him, to show even a tiny speck of emotion. This is because if they show even a slightest sign of any emotion then Koh can steal their faces.

He does not care even if the Avatar is in front of him he will still try to steal his or her face. But his actions with Avatar Kuruk show that Koh punished Avatar because of his arrogant nature and his lack of respect for the spirits of the spirit world. And he does not hold a grudge against the different incarnations of the Avatar. He is even willing to help

After listening to this Aang shows signs of an epiphany on his face but thankfully Koh is facing in the opposite direction. And because of this he misses the show of emotion from Aang and is not able to steal his face in this encounter. At the end of this meeting Koh states that they will meet again.

ZUKO ALONE

Zuko Alone: Why It’s An Underestimated Chapter

Avatar, the Legend of Aang, is one of the best-animated series out there. It reaches a narrative depth that many similar series would give anything to achieve: political themes, social issues, incredibly well-written male and female characters, and an elegant, ethical and incomparable world-building. The “Zuko Alone” Episode is storytelling at its best.

The narrative of the series reaches a point where one chapter can change our perspective. In one of the most underrated chapters of the series: “Zuko Alone” we can see how a character like Prince Zuko who is perceived as an antagonist at the time acquires many nuances. After the chapter, we end up asking ourselves Is Zuko a bad person? Let’s dig into the “Zuko Alone” episode.

Zuko Alone Character Development

Avatar has better character development than any animation aimed at a young audience. In this series, everyone can have their favorite character, but we all agree that the best-developed character is Zuko, he may or may not be your favorite character but his arc and evolution, along with the moral code of his journey and his subsequent redemption make him a complex character, beyond being good or bad, black or white.

Here we will discuss Zuko’s development, but we will not analyze the entire series but rather a key chapter that not many take with importance but is vital to understanding why Zuko constantly struggles with moral conflicts.

From book one we know that Zuko wishes to capture the Avatar to regain the honor that was taken from him by the Fire Nation. For us, he is a simple villain just because he has objectives contrary to the protagonist, but Zuko is different, we are not told about his origin in the first chapter, but from the first moment the series makes it clear that Zuko is someone to be respected, he has more honor than the entire Fire Nation put together. On multiple occasions, he doesn’t hurt other people, he simply wants to catch the avatar.

In the first chapter, Aang and Zuko come to an agreement in which Zuko promised not to hurt anyone if Aang went with him, as well as later when the origin of Zuko’s scar is shown. We see that he has kindness in his heart when he preferred his crew to take shelter instead of chasing the avatar at the end of the first book.

After fighting Zhao in the Northern Water Tribe, someone who wanted to take everything from him decides to save him, there is a hero within Zuko. We are given a clear example of what he can do with these details. Zuko is neither good nor bad, he is honorable, he respects what he cares about despite always having conflicts. This will be repaired with the help of his uncle.

Zuko is Slowly Changing

Zuko goes so far as to defy his entire nation because he wants to be the one to catch the avatar. He is not able to realize that he is changing. We can see him and his uncle as an allegory, they are a betrayal to their nation for doing the right thing.

In Zuko’s arc in the Earth’s book, it isn’t easy to evaluate the character because he is a teenager living a teenager’s life. From the beginning, we see someone banished from his nation, desperately seeking to regain his honor, but here we are presented with something different. He is not a prince commanding a ship; he is a teenager traveling, chasing answers so he can reconcile with himself.

Capturing the Avatar seemed like the right thing to do at the time, but he realizes the damage his nation has done, but he doesn’t want to stoop to being someone else. He doesn’t understand why he can’t be happy, or well, he thinks he does; he thinks he can only get what he wants by capturing the Avatar. In his heart, he hopes to be welcomed by his nation as a hero, but most of all, to be welcomed by his father with love. We know that’s impossible; he just hasn’t realized yet.

A man who burned his son’s face, a child who spoke when he shouldn’t have and begged for forgiveness. Ozai is unable to welcome Zuko with open arms, the Zuko Alone episode is simply a gem. In this episode, we see that despite being good and doing the right thing according to his uncle’s teachings an entire village detests him.

He does not look for trouble, he avoids snitching a child, he ends up reluctantly accepting the hospitality of a family. He becomes aware of the problems not only of the family that takes him in but also of the village where the chapter takes place, once again we see Zuko is watching firsthand the suffering caused by war.

We take a walk through Zuko’s memories, he must put his childhood in perspective to define his identity. Thanks to his mother he was loved as a child, so he is not evil, there is goodness in his heart. But he also remembers his father’s actions and the reason for his decisions. This is something that haunts him as he does not want to believe that he is wrong and that the one he so desperately pursues is right.

Conclusion of Zuko Alone

At the end of this chapter, we see the prince go to the aid of the kidnapped boy, confronting a group of bullies who had the whole town in disgrace. In his fight he ends up using firebending and although he defeats the corrupted soldiers he receives nothing but hatred and rejection from the people he saved. Why is this happening to him? He wants to understand it, but he still can’t do it.

In this chapter there is no one but Zuko, he doesn’t have his uncle to give him advice, there is no Avatar, his biggest target. We only see a character venturing into a world corrupted by a 100-year war that he is part of. Undoubtedly not only in this chapter but in this whole book we can notice how the character is immersed in a journey of self-discovery in which he begins to show his various facets.

Avatar Fire Nation: Why Did They Attack The World

“But everything changed when the fire nation attacked…”. That line is about as iconic as any other in the history of television. Why? Because it signals the beginning of a story that pretty much means the world to any fan of the Avatar: The Last Airbender series. But aside all the  fanfare, one quick question that has never really been answered pops its head; “why did Avatar Fire Nation attack?

It’s a question that requires a second look at the entire series. Particularly because it involved the complete annihilation of an entire people; the air nomads.

It all began with Fire Lord Sozin, but to accurately guess his motives is a tall order. That is, without proper research of course. And we’ve got plenty of those.

The series begins in a world that is already war torn, and under the control of the avatar fire nation. We come to see that the Hundred Year War, as it is so called; can only be ended by the Avatar. This incarnation of the bridge between the human and spirit worlds is Aang; a young Airbender that has been frozen in an iceberg for a century. He is the only one who can drive the avatar fire nation back. We learn the origins of the war as well, but that doesn’t happen much until the final and third book of the series; the book of fire.

Let’s take a look at Fire Lord Sozin’s quest to see the world under the Avatar Fire Nation’s control.

When Aang woke up from his hundred-year hibernation inside the iceberg, the world he awakened to was completely different from the one he had left behind. Instead, he was shocked to find out that the Avatar Fire Nation had made him the last Airbender.

The other Air Nomads, including his beloved mentor Monk Gyatso, had been massacred at the start of the Hundred Year War. The Avatar Fire Nation had drawn upon the power of Sozin’s comet to command unstoppable strength and firebending. Against the rather pacifist Air Nomads, they were no match.

There was a good reason why Fire Lord Sozin targeted the remote nation of peace-loving monks before taking on bigger enemies like the Earth Kingdom or the Water Tribes. And that was because he was determined to find the next Avatar, and destroy them before they could thwart his plans.Of course thanks to the Avatar Cycle, the next Avatar would have come from the Air Nomads.

Avatar Fire Nation Firelord Sozin and Avatar Roku Were Best Of Friends

When they were still young, Roku and Sozin were the best of friends. Matter of fact, they could have passed as brothers. They were so close that there was no resentment or jealousy from Sozin when Roku was revealed as the new Avatar by the Avatar Fire Nation Fire Sages. In fact, when Roku left the Fire Nation to embark on his training in the other elements, Sozin gave him the parting gift of his own headpiece, a royal artefact meant to be worn only by the Crown Prince.

The two men remained best friends even when Roku returned from his training, and Sozin had become the Fire Lord. Sozin was even the best man at Roku’s wedding. But things started to change for the bad shortly after. On this same wedding day, Sozin called Roku aside, and revealed a secret ambition; one that Roku did not find pleasing in the least.

Fire Lord Sozin Wanted To Expand The Avatar Fire Nation’s Empire

Before the Hundred Year War started, the Avatar Fire Nation was at the peak of its power. In fact, the only nation that could rival them in military strength and size was the Earth Kingdom; and even then, there was still a gap.

Sozin saw that his friendship with the Avatar and his status as the Fire Lord were a sign that they had a great destiny. What this great destiny meant, was that the Avatar Fire Nation should share its prosperity with the rest of the world; by expanding its empire. Sozin thought of himself as the hero of the story – the great leader who would turn the Four Nations into a single united empire.

Unfortunately for him, Roku found the plan of this great destiny rather disgusting. He saw the Avatar’s role as maintaining the balance between the human and spirit worlds; as well as among the four nations.  It didn’t matter which nation the Avatar was born into, what was important was that they were not supposed to take sides in politics or war.

This was something we would eventually see Korra struggle with some two centuries later. In lieu of this, Roku simply refuted Sozin’s plans, warning him against attempting to execute his plans. Roku would eventually find that Sozin went on to create Avatar Fire Nation colonies despite his warnings; he took on the Fire Lord and deftly defeated him. He spared his life, but also warned him not to try anything like it again.

Roku’s Death

Sozin did not return the favor when he had Roku at his mercy. When a volcano on Roku’s home island erupted, he stayed behind as his wife and the other inhabitants of the island escaped; trying to use his bending abilities to try and hold back the lava.

Sozin arrived to help, but after Roku was hit by a blast of poisonous volcanic gases, Sozin left him to die; realising that so long as he lived, he would be a barrier to Sozin’s plans for the Avatar Fire Nation’s expansion. Roku and his dragon, Fang, were consumed by the volcano, and Sozin was finally free to pursue his ambitions.

The (Avatar) Fire Nation Destroyed The Air Nomads In Their Search For The Next Avatar

Sozin was still very much afraid of the Avatar, even after Roku’s death. He bided his time for about 12 years after the incident; and then a once in a lifetime opportunity present itself. It was a comet; would greatly amplify the powers of all the firebenders.

They would become nearly unstoppable. This comet would eventually become known as Sozin’s comet, as it was just what the Avatar Fire Nation needed to finalize their blow on the world. But Sozin had other ideas than a full-blown onslaught on the Earth Kingdom; which was the only nation that could match them. Instead, he carried out a genocidal onslaught on the Air Nomads.

Since he already knew the Avatar cycle would produce the next Avatar from the Air Nomads, he decided to nip the cycle in the bud. The cycle had already seen Roku come from the Avatar Fire Nation, preceded by Kyoshi from the Earth Kingdom; preceded by Kuruk of the Northern Water Tribe, whose predecessor was Yangchen from the Air Nomads.  In order to avoid the Avatar interfering with his plans, Sozin decided to kill him. True to his fears, the Air Nomads had planned to accelerate Aang’s training due to the signs of a coming war.

Despite believing he had wiped out all the Airebenders, Sozin had been unlucky. Aang, had already run away from the Southern Air Temple before the attack. Sozin would spend the rest of his life searching for the Avatar.

The End Of The Hundred Year War

Sozin’s anxiety would be proven true, as in the end it would be Aang that put an eventual end to the Hundred Year War. Aang ended the Avatar Fire Nation’s century old conquest, defeated his grandson Ozai, and restored balance to the world. However, just as Roku had shown mercy to Sozin, Aang showed mercy to Ozai, letting him live; but stripping him of his  bending.

Avatar Wan and How He Became The First Bender

Wan was the first Avatar, and he lived about ten thousand years before Aang and Avatar Korra. He was banished from his home and sent into the then forbidden forest. The forest was inhabited by spirits, and at that time, the balance was very shaky, and relations between humans and spirits were not at their best. He eventually learned to coexist with the spirits. He made it his life’s mission to help bring balance between them and the rest of mankind. This eventually led to him becoming the first Avatar.

Avatar Wan’s History

Avatar Wan lived in poverty in a city that was built on the back of the fire lion turtle. His main goal was to survive and feed his friends. He did this by regularly stealing food from the wealthy Chou family. He had agility and explicitly cunning behaviors to aid him in staying alive and achieving this task.

On one of these days, he was chased by three of the Chou brothers and ultimately captured. He managed to outrun them at first and make his way to the rooftops. When he stopped to eat, the angry Chou brothers caught up with him. He tried to escape again and was tripped by one of them. His sack of stolen food was taken away from him, and Wan was thrown from the roof into a muddy pen with hybrid pigs.

After he eventually returned to his treehouse, he offered Jaya and Yao the little food he had managed to salvage and stow away in his tunic.

He gave away his own portion to several hungry animals while wishing that their lifestyle could be a lot better. He wished that they could live like the Chous. During this time, however, he devised a plan to gain more power so he could change the way they lived.

His Great Plan

Avatar Wan’s plan was about to commence. He joined a group of hunters who were going out of the city into the forbidden forest (Spirit Wilds) to get food for the town.

Although the head Hunter was skeptical at first about letting Wan join the hunt. He did eventually give in and was allowed to accompany them since there were no other people that were willing to undertake the task.
The customary task was that they travel to the fire lion turtle to receive the power of fire bending before venturing into the spirit wilds. This was so they would be able to defend themselves against the hostile spirits that lived in the spirit wilds.

Soon after the group set off, Wan pretended to suddenly have gotten cold feet and was subsequently ordered by the head hunter to go back to the lion turtle to return his newly acquired ability.

Wan, however, did not return to the lion turtle and instead returned to the city directly, keeping his fire. Despite his friend Jaya’s protests to return the power back to the fire lion, he inspired a few other poor people to join him on a raid on the Chou palace to get more food. Although the raid was going smoothly at first, the Chou brothers called in reinforcements, and Wan was accidentally unmasked by Little Chou and captured.

He was brought before the lion turtle and, although the creature permitted him to keep his fire at his request, Wan was banished to the Spirit Wilds for his crimes.

Avatar Wan Befriending The Spirits

At first, he wandered the spirit wilds, shooting at every spirit he came across. While he was running away from a frog spirit that was chasing him, Wan got eaten by a plant but was able to save himself by using his fire bending ability.

He ran on until he collapsed from exhaustion on an open grassy spot. However, much to his surprise, the grass started to wrap itself around him and pulled him under. He used his fire to save himself from death by suffocation and continued his journey through the wilderness. Afraid to lower his guard in the hostile environment, he stayed awake the whole night.

By morning, he was tired, exhausted, and hungry, which made him stop by what looked like a tree that was carrying a fruit. This eventually turned out to be a swarm of bees that were hurdled together. They swiftly attacked Wan for his disturbance of their habitat.

He couldn’t Get Away

Wan’s frantic attempt to get away from the enraged insects led him to fall off a cliff.
As he landed, he found himself looking at a peaceful island-like oasis with more fruit trees.

Still consumed by hunger and exhaustion, he made his way over toward the little island. He soon found his path blocked by an aye-aye spirit who appeared out of nowhere before him and told him he was not welcome at the oasis. He said humans were not welcome, and the oasis was only open to spirits.

Wan, at first, tried to reason with the spirit. He told the spirit that he was hungry and in need of sleep. Wan attempted to force the creature aside by fire bending at him when the spirit coldly said that it was not his problem.

Enraged by the effrontery, the spirit met Wan’s challenge and easily evaded the attack by teleporting behind him. He grabbed Wan and threw him aside in a nearby bush, causing Wan to walk away in defeat. When he noticed that several other spirits were granted access to the oasis, he covered himself in leaves and branches, disguising himself as “Bushy, the Bush Spirit.”

He briefly managed to fool the oasis guardian, but this was not for long as the guardian was able to tell and discover Avatar Wan’s deception through his human scent. When ordered to return home, Wan told the spirits that he had been banished by the other humans. The other spirits took pity on him and suggested he find other lion turtle cities. Shocked that there were other cities but his own, he asked for directions, but the guardian refused to give any to him, creating a joke out of it, which irritated Wan to the core.

Introduce The Lion Turtles to Avatar Wan

Wan eventually set out to find these lion turtle cities on his own. While traveling through the wilds, he spotted a cat deer that was caught in a net. Still hungry, he approached it with the intent of eating it. Although after seeing the creature up close, he felt pity for it and climbed into the tree instead of in an attempt to free it. At that same moment, the group of hunters that he had accompanied before arrived at the scene with the intent to kill the cat deer.

Wan fire bent at the hunters and ran off, hoping the men would forget about the animal and chase him.
Understanding the dangers of the spirit wild, he used them to his advantage to get rid of two of his pursuers. Before he could free himself completely from the hunters, Wan was struck by a fire blast that sent him flying against a tree branch, rendering him unconscious.

However, before the men could do anything, the aye-aye spirit, touched by Wan’s selfless act, intervened and saved him. Wan was brought back to the oasis by the spirit, where he was placed in the spirit waters, healing him. Wan chose to stay at the oasis and learn the ways of the spirits, which earned him the nickname “Stinky” from the aye-aye spirit.

As time went by, Wan befriended the spirits and developed his fire bending skills by learning the Dancing Dragon form from a white dragon, training himself to the point where his bending became an extension of his own body, not just a tool. He used his abilities to protect the spirits and drive off hostile humans.

Meeting Raava, Becoming The Avatar

Two years after Wan had been banished, he was still insistent on seeing the other cities. He left the spirit oasis with Mula, his cat deer. During his journey, he was disturbed by a horde of fleeing spirits who were trying to get away from an all-raging battle from two “powerful “spirits. The battle was so chaotic that it threatened to destroy the whole valley.

Concerned for the landscape and its creatures, Wan heads over to investigate. He is met by Vaatu and Raava in an all-raging battle. Oblivious to who they both were, he tries to get them to stop. Raava, the white spirit, tells him to move along, stating that the battle does not concern him.

He objects and tells her that it is his concern, stating that the lives of the spirit animals were at stake. Vaatu, sensing weakness and empathy that can be exploited, begs Wan and tells him that Raava has tortured him for ten thousand years. Wan uses his bending to break the hold Raava has on Vaatu. He soon learns the error of his ways, and Raava tells him who she is.

Wan tries to help after knowing this is his fault. He is told to stay out of the conflict, stating that this is not his business.

While on his way, he comes across harvesters with the ability to control air. He unintentionally scares them away. Curiosity getting the best of him, he constructs a catapult and lunges himself up to the city as he has no ability to get all the way up there.

Vaatu Needed to Be Put Away By Avatar Wan

Fascinated by their knowledge while conversing with the people living there. Vaatu arrives, and his presence turned the peaceful spirits living in the town into raging dark entities. After helping them fight off the dark spirits, Wan decides to help Raava further by fighting Vaatu.

To do this, he asks the air lion turtle for its power. No human had ever held two elements before, but Wan insists that he is unlike any other human and says he can do it.
The lion turtle decided to give him the power of the air; however, Raava would have to hold the power for him until he mastered it.

Raava gave the element of air to Wan by passing through his body and combining their energies. Although a dangerous undertaking, Wan survived the ordeal, and the small yet unlikely alliance set out to find the water and earth lion turtles to receive the last two elements.

Wan and Raava work together to master all four elements so he would be ready to defeat Vaatu come Harmonic convergence.

The great battle began, and he called upon Raava to merge both their energies. This gave him additional strength to his own, and he was able to land a few shots to Vaatu. This state put him in great danger, but he was not about to give up. Vaatu pinned him to the southern spirit portal when Harmonic convergence began.

Final Thoughts On Avatar Wan

Wan placed his hand on the spirit portal, permanently bonding his spirit with Raava’s. This, in turn, created the Avatar Spirit, making Wan the first Avatar. With his newfound strength from the Avatar State, Wan managed to trap Vaatu in an elemental cage and imprisoned him in the hollow of the Tree of Time that is in the spirit world. He also closed the northern portal to prevent any human from ever physically entering the spirit world and freeing Vaatu.

Was Zhao (Avatar) the first Antagonist of the Series?

Many consider Zhao as the first antagonist of Avatar the Legend of Aang, while others think that Zuko is the one who occupies that place but if these are the characters that people most link to the image of antagonist then why did we saw them fighting in the first chapters of the series?

Shouldn’t they go against the protagonists instead of fighting each other? or is it that both characters are much more than simple villains. Next, we will analyze Zhao, his history, and his development to answer the question of who is the true antagonist of the first book of Avatar the Legend of Aang.

Zhao (Avatar): His First Appearancee

Zhao first appears in chapter 3 of the first season when Iroh and his nephew disembark at a military checkpoint. After disembarking and exchanging a few first words we can see that war titles are very important to Zhao so much so that we can even see how he enjoys the moment when he had to correct Zuko for referring to him wrongly.

In that scene, we can see that Zuko who had a different upbringing than the vast majority of people in the Fire Nation treats the commander in a not very appropriate way being quickly corrected by his uncle who became a general and understands the importance of military positions and titles for the citizens of the Fire Nation. This is one of the most important points to take into account in the development of Zhao as a character. The relationship between the titles he obtained and power.

Zhao Hated Zuko and Iroh

In the eyes of the future admiral, Zuko does not deserve any respect, his devotion and loyalty were with the fire lord. the legitimate leader of that great empire. In his heart he understood that with or without the avatar Zuko would never be welcomed by his father, so the moment he lost the Agni Kai to the prince, Zhao burned with fury, he could not conceive that a disrespectful teenager who did not dare to finish the fight had defeated him. He was a commander, he could not afford a defeat, so he reacted dishonorably by attacking Zuko from behind.

From that moment on he had a grudge against Zuko and the avatar, partly because Zuko was everything that Zhao hated: He was young, and just by right of blood, he carried a title that, if it were not for his banishment would be higher than his own. Besides the fact that capturing the avatar would be a great blow to the exiled prince and would surely give him more status and reputation in the eyes of his compatriots.

His next appearances were chasing the avatar like the day when Aang contacted Roku or the day when the Avatar was captured by Zhao, but where the character was deepened a little more was in chapter 16 of the first season titled “The Deserter” in the said chapter our heroes pass through a city of the Fire Nation.

Zhao (Avatar) Backstory

There they learn of the existence of Jeong Jeong, a former Fire Nation admiral who decided to defect from his title. The avatar sees in the retired old man his only chance to learn the art of fire bending but encounters resistance to the tutor’s teaching.

After overcoming this scene Jeong Jeong tries to teach the avatar to master fire but he does it in a rather special way, trying to teach him the gentle side of the art because as fire can mean life it can also hurt. He teaches him to feel the sun as the main source of energy, the air as fuel, and discipline as the center of everything.

Although the avatar, being a very impatient boy, is unable to understand him, Jeong Jeong explains to him the dangers of impatience and the search for power by giving the example of a disciple who cared for nothing more than that and the dangers of taking that path.

We mention Jeong Jeong because the disciple the old man was talking about, who only wanted to burn and destroy, was Zhao.

Zhao Had a Massive Ego

The appearance of Jeong Jeong is not by chance, he is presented to show us the counterpart of the future admiral, just as fire means death and pain, it can also mean life, while one tries to teach the goodness of this art, the other only tries to destroy. It is necessary to understand the words of the master:

“Learn discipline, self-control or risk the destruction of yourself and everything you love”. This sentence lets us understand that the old man still regrets not having been able to put his disciple on the right path, if Zhao had learned from him, perhaps he could have escaped from that future full of punishment and torture that he had to live, although we will talk about that later.

Zhao arrives at Jeong Jeong’s home in search of the Avatar, where once again his title as admiral is trampled on by the others, as Jeong Jeong tells him that it has no meaning, something that bothers Zhao since his whole life was set on becoming someone in the army.

We see how his fury has no control, he mercilessly attacks the avatar, who manages to win without even landing a single blow, leaving Zhao to destroy his ships and, likewise, with his fire. At this moment we see again the lesson of his master “Learn discipline and self-control or risk the destruction of yourself and all that you love”.

Nothern Water Tribe

After this defeat, Zhao prepares a full-scale attack against the northern water tribe, recruits the entire crew of Prince Zuko, and sets off on a journey together with Uncle Iroh.

“In the future people will study in books the great story of Admiral Zhao, who managed to defeat the last bastion of waterbenders.”

Those were the words he commented to the former general, but what he had not said was what he understood as his greatest feat. Some time ago the general found an ancient scroll with stories about the spirits of the moon and the ocean, he discovered that both beings had descended to earth and had taken physical form ergo if that was true then they could be killed.

“They will call me Zhao the conqueror, the executioner of the last waterbenders, the moon killer, Zhao the invincible.”

As we can see the only important thing in his life was to leave a mark in the history books, his ambition was consumed by his ego.

“I am Zhao the conqueror, I am Zhao the invincible, me, me, me, me.”

Killing The Moon Spirit

He could not and would not think of anything but aggrandizing his image, and though the avatar and Uncle Iroh tried to make him understand that the moon not only benefited the waterbenders, but that it brought balance.

Zhao, blinded by his lust for power and renown attacked mercilessly, taking the life of the great spirit. He was interested neither in balance, nor in life, nor death, nor the present. He only wanted to achieve great things to be known as the great conqueror in the history books. Only to achieve his ambition since war titles were everything to him.

Consumed by his military lust and falling victim to the world corrupted by a war of over 100 years, his story ends badly thanks to the avatar’s anger and Yue’s sacrifice.

Zhao loses the battle succumbing to the anger of the great spirit of the ocean who in a fit of rage tries to take his life, the commander has the opportunity to save himself by taking the hand of the exiled prince but decides not to do so.

His ego and ambition consumed him so much that he could not think clearly and he preferred death rather than be helped by Zuko, a traitor of his nation. Although this can also be taken as the pride of a soldier depending on the point of view from which it is observed.

Decades later we can see Zhao in the valley of lost souls, with no way to escape. We can interpret the effect the fog has is to live the memories over and over again, being unable to alter or modify the inevitable supply of events. The way out of this effect is described to us as accepting your mistakes, your fate, and improving your thoughts.

Characters like Tenzing who were able to understand their failures and clear their fears were able to come out of this effect, but Zhao was so immersed in his ego and ambition that he spent decades repeating the same thing.

“I am Commander Zhao, conqueror and killer of the moon.”

It was all linked to his addiction with enhancing his image and renown.

Zhao: The First Antagonist

To conclude, Zhao was a good antagonist for the first season of ATLA, in which the producers were not very clear about the direction of the series, even being a character not so relevant had its development and outcome, we could delve into his past and understand why he ended up being the way he was.

But apart from being an antagonist, we can also see him as a victim. Victim of what we could interpret as the true antagonist of the series. To answer our initial question: who is the main antagonist of the series? Is Zhao an antagonist? Yes, but he is not the main one. In the beginning, Zuko was also an antagonist, but he was not the main antagonist either.

We could take the concept of the fire nation as the main antagonist, beyond the characters themselves, from a young age children are taught the greatness of the country and its ambitious project to share its wealth with the world through war. Children grow up with this idea of becoming a commander. Soldiers are respected and in general, everything revolves around this.

Final Thoughts On Zhao and The Fire Nation

This is why the fire lord Ozai, has virtually no dialogue in the series because he is representing evil in the overall concept of the fire nation. A nation that burns villages, takes the lives of innocents, captures and imprisons civilians, that just destroys whatever is in its path. This is why we consider the concept of “the killer nation” as the true antagonist. This concept cannot be fully reflected in any character, being all of them, including Admiral Zhao, victims of this world and a nation rotten by 100 years of war.

Who is The Avatar (Avatar Icon)

Avatar, the Last Airbender series was the birth of a fantastic franchise. It has gathered fans all over the world since its debut and has continued to create memories for children, adults, and young adults all over the world. When Netflix announced the live-action series that was to come, fans were more than excited.

The Avatar is a reincarnation of the Light spirit Raava, fusing with a human being named Wan. He became the first Avatar. Avatar Icon

The Avatar icon is a representation of all four elements and all four nations. As the Avatar, the master of all the four elements, he or she must wield it with great responsibility. They must learn the disciplines of all four, balancing it within themselves in harmony. It is only the Avatar that can do this. The designs on the Avatar icon are four in number. They represent all four elements starting with Earth, Water, Fire, and Air.

Earth Kingdom (Earth)

People of the Earth Kingdom are gifted with the ability to control this element. The element Earth. As General Iroh told Zuko. The people of the Earth Kingdom are diverse and strong. They are both persistent and enduring.

The Earth kingdom is one of the four nations in the Avatar World.

The kingdom spans an entire continent as well as several subsidiary islands. It is also known as the largest and most populated sovereignty in the world and encompasses much of the eastern hemisphere. The Earth kingdom operates as a monarchy under the rule of a king or queen, although the 54th Earth King, Wu of the Hou-Ting dynasty, announced his intention in 174 AG to abdicate the throne in favor of splitting the nation into independent states with democratically elected leaders, akin to the political system used in the United Republic of Nations. This was an action that was necessary for peace as he grew to understand that the people were strong and didn’t need the monarchy to oversee their affairs.

They also adhere to a philosophy of peaceful coexistence and cooperation with the other nations of the world. Earthbenders use their abilities for defense and industry, as seen in Avatar Korra’s Legend. They also fiercely defended their cities against Fire Nation attacks during the Hundred Year War. The Earth kingdom also has a large economy based on agriculture and limited industry, though it is not as economically powerful as the Fire Nation, which benefits from advanced technology.

One of the first Earth Benders were two lovers named Oma and Shu, who learned directly from the Badgers. Oma used it to stop a war between both villages. She created a new city and named it after both of them, Omashu.

Water Tribe/Nation (Water)

The water tribe is divided into the South Pole (Southern water tribe), the North Pole, and Foggy Swamp. As Iroh told Zuko while trying to teach him a new element; The people of the water tribe are capable of adapting to many things. They have a deep sense of community and love that holds them together through anything.

Water tribe is one of the four nations and one of the people with a bending discipline. The water tribe people have the ability to control water.

Water Tribe is also a collective term for the nation of people who practice the art of waterbending.

There is also a small community of water benders that populate the swamp. The people of the Water Tribes are referred to as “Water Tribesmen.”

Fire Nation (Fire)

The Fire Nation is one of the world’s four nations and five sovereign states. It is an absolute monarchy that is led by the Fire Lord. It is home to most fire benders. These are people with the ability to create and manipulate the element fire. Geographically, the nation is located along the planet’s equator in the western hemisphere and is composed of several islands, named the Fire Islands.

As General Iroh said to Zuko when discussing the nature of the fire nation. The people of the fire nation have the desire and will and the energy, and drive to achieve what they want.

The people of the Fire Nation are referred to as “Fire Nationals.”

The Fire Nation is the second-largest nation in terms of area, following the Earth Kingdom, while its economy is the most powerful in the world.

Air Nomads (Air)

The air Nomads of the air nation are one of the four great nations, as Iroh said to Zuko on the nature of the Air Nomads. He said they detached themselves from worldly concerns and found peace and freedom. Air Nomads is a collective term for a group of people who have detached themselves from worldly concerns. They are a monastic order who practice the bending discipline of Air.

The Avatar Icon has these four bending nations present on it. It is a depiction of how the Avatar is the unity of all four nations.

And every Airbender used to have a partner bison that they got in their childhood.

Before the 100 Years War, most of the Flying Bisons used to live in the Air Temples. And they were thought to be the only way of reaching the Air temples. Even when Katara revealed about the genocide of the Air Nomads, Aang did not believe it initially. And replied to Katara that the only way to reach the Air temples is through a flying Bison. So the Air Nomads can not be killed. But on reaching the temples and witnessing the ruins of once-great and full of life Air Temples firsthand, did Avatar Aang accepted the fate of his people.

First Interaction Between Aang And Baby Appa

Like all Airbenders, Aang also received his Bison when both of them were at a very young age. The mother of Baby Appa directed Appa and her other children to a group of young Nomads to become lifelong partners. Aang presented an apple to baby Appa which he happily accepted thus making them lifelong companions. When Aang overheard the monks’ plan to separate him from Monk Gyatso. He chose Appa to run away from the Air temple. But was caught in the middle of a storm that nearly killed them both.

It is at this time that the Avatar state took control of Aang and he formed a hibernating bubble around himself and Appa thus going into hibernation for a full hundred years.

Red and White Lotus: Two faces of the same tile

In the Avatar Universe, several very important organizations take part in world politics, such as the Dai Li agents. But there was one that stood out above the rest, because for centuries it was composed of wise masters from all over the world: The White Lotus. However, softer times changed things, and new organizations with different paradigms like The Red Lotus emerged.

The White Lotus impressed all the fans, after more than 100 years of inactivity. They stepped up to the plate, and tipped the scales in the Avatar’s favor in the final battle releasing Ba Sing Se. For that reason, in The Legend of Korra, The White Lotus surprised everyone again when they had almost no influence on the Avatar’s numerous battles, and seemed to be a shadow of their former glory, so how did they end up like that? Did everyone agree with the path The White Lotus took? What is the Red Lotus?

What is The White Lotus?

The Order of the White Lotus for centuries went unnoticed and only acted when the avatar in turn needed it. The best and wisest masters in the world composed the order. So its activities and importance were beyond borders and allegiances to the Four Nations. Its original mission was to help the avatar bring balance to the world. It functioned when necessary as a small private army. Their most important function was to find, protect and even train each new avatar. Members identified to each other with a white lotus tile from the popular board game called Pai Sho.

They revealed themselves to the world at the end of the 100 Years War. A group with the most notable members of the White Lotus composed by: Iroh, Jeong Jeong, Pakku, Piandao, and King Bumi attacked a large detachment of the Fire Nation army without reinforcements. With a great show of power, they freed Ba Sing Se, the capital of the Earth Kingdom. While the Avatar team took on Azula and Ozai.

Thanks to their victory, the White Lotus established themselves as a recognized force for good. Considered to have an eye to the future. Unfortunately, the change in the White Lotus’ leadership did not benefit them after Iroh ascended to the Spirit’s World.

White Lotus in Korra’s Times (Red and White Lotus)

Decades after the last battle of the 100 Years’ War, The White Lotus became a publicly known organization. They dedicated to serve the avatar and his family, as a sort of personal escort.

When Aang passed away, it was them who took it upon themselves to search for the next incarnation of the avatar. When they found Korra. They were surprised by the great power she demonstrated at a young age. They took it upon themselves to care for her, guide her and train her.

Unfortunately, the new generation of The White Lotus is considerably weaker. Most of the members are young and inexperienced and the older ones have roles closer to being more advisors than warriors.

The young members of the White Lotus seem unable to cope with the threats of the modern world and the others are too old for active service.

Amon and the Equalists defeated them with terrible ease, when they attacked the Air Temple island. Besides, they are no match for the Red Lotus.

We believe that for a time, Katara, Zuko, and Toph were part of the White Lotus. During that time they met promising young masters, but with their withdrawal, these boys were exposed to the bad influence of the Red Lotus.

What is the Red Lotus?

Originally, The Red Lotus in Avatar comes from the White Lotus. Xai Bau , a member of the White Lotus, founded the organization. Since the society changed its direction after the events from ATLA. Xai Bau felt disgusted for being just a mere bodyguard for the Avatar. Many members shared this feeling and even Iroh The Grand Lotus realized about this and tried to reconcile. However, tensions inside the order increased until this faction deserted.

The Red Lotus’ main goal was to bring freedom to the world by dismantling world governments. They intended to unify the world. They wanted to reconnect the spirit world and the human world by using the Avatar to open the spirit portals. The White Lotus was aware of this. They understood their point of view, but didn’t realize The Red Lotus would become an extremist, terrorist group.

The creation of this different Lotus group may have been one of the reasons why The White Lotus deteriorated. The new organization was more attractive to more powerful young people. It was similar to its counterpart in previous years, it was kept underground. We know that Zaheer, Ghazan, and Ming-Hua once had some relationship with the White Lotus. But since they did not have the same ideas, they parted ways for good.

The Red Lotus tried to accomplish its plan trying to kidnap the Avatar twice. First, when Korra was still a baby. Zaheer, Ghazan, P’Li, and Ming-Hua tried to kidnap her. They wanted to indoctrinate her with their organization’s ideology to reverse Avatar Wan’s actions from the past. Avatar Wan did not only separate Raava and Vaatu, the spirits of light and darkness. In addition, he also divided the spiritual and physical worlds. To the eyes of The Red Lotus, those actions had brought imbalance to the world.

Kidnap The Avatar (The Red and White Lotus)

Toranq, Tenzin, Sokka, Zuko frustrated their first attempt to kidnap Korra. So they incarcerated the members aforementioned in maximum security prisons until the Harmonic Convergence in the year 171 AG.

The main members of the Red Lotus escaped and tried to kidnap Korra again, with a slight difference. Since Korra was a grown-up by that moment their plan to implant their ideology on her was no longer viable. They decided to kidnap her to induce Korra into the Avatar State to assassinate her, and put an end to the avatar cycle. While The Red Lotus tried to accomplish its main goal. They didn’t lose time causing instability everywhere they went to the point they suffocated to death the Earth Queen.

Besides, Zaheer, Ghazan, P’Li, and Ming-Hua we could see other members from The Red Lotus during TLOK like Aiwei and Unalaq. However, since The Red Lotus is a secret organization we don’t know how many members there are hidden or if they are going to counter-attack again in the future.

As we could realize given this information both organizations had the same origin. However, The Red Lotus diverted from the righteous path when they decided to start terrorizing to accomplish their plans. Anyone could agree with either organization but as we know the end doesn’t justify the means.

The Dark Avatar

The Dark Avatar: Who Is UnaVaatu?

The Dark Avatar was first introduced in The Legend of Korra. This is the sequel to the Last Airbender series that aired on Nickelodeon.

The Dark Avatar was created when Unalaq fused with Vaatu, the dark spirit in order to become a new type of Avatar. A Dark Avatar that was meant to usher the world into a new era of darkness. As Chief Unalaq said to Avatar Korra. ” When Harmonic convergence comes, I will fuse with Vaatu and together we will become a new Avatar, a Dark Avatar.”

The Dark Avatar, also known as UnaVaatu is the result of Unalaq fusing with Vaatu. This Dark Avatar eventually gained an enlarged form as the world had never before seen something of that nature. Unalaq meant to usher the world into a new and darker era until both himself and Vaatu were defeated by Korra and Raava, the light spirit.

Unalaq And His Evil Ways

Unalaq, the Chief of the northern water tribe, a man who had great spiritual enlightenment sought to change the world by fusing with the dark spirit Vaatu. About ten thousand years prior to this era, Avatar Wan, who at that time was just known as Wan was able to defeat Vaatu.

Wan made the grave error of freeing Vaatu from Raava’s grasp when he noticed them fighting. Vaatu had told him that he had been tortured for thousands of years by his assailant, who was Raava. Wan, in an attempt to be a noble defender, fire bent at Raava, freeing Vaatu from Raava. It didn’t take long for him to realize what he had done and sought to rectify this.

He went on a journey where he acquired all the four elements and spent years mastering how to control them. At that time, Raava told him that he could not hold all the four elements in one body. He needed the physical endurance to be able to do this. He attained this and during harmonic convergence, he fused with Raava permanently in order to defeat Vaatu. He succeeded in doing this, caging Vaatu in an elemental cage, in the tree of time

Unalaq sought to recreate this occurrence by doing this with the Dark spirit Vaatu, thus, becoming a Dark Avatar.
The Dark Avatar aims to reunite the physical and spiritual realms. This is something that Avatar Wan made to be separate when he noticed that spirits and humans did not seem capable of coexisting.

The Dark Avatar as well wants to usher in a new world order of ten thousand years of darkness.
Unalaq and Vaatu were eventually defeated and killed by Korra as an astral projection. This was during the Harmonic Convergence of 171 AG] With his spirit purified, the Dark Avatar Cycle was ended before it began, although Vaatu would eventually regenerate within Raava. This is as the cycle goes, one not completely dying and springing up within the other within the course of the next ten thousand years.

History Of The Dark Avatar

How did the Dark Avatar come to be?

When Unalaq was young, he joined a rogue group, aimed at restoring the world to the natural order of things. Their idea of the natural order is chaos. They are a group called the Red Lotus. Unalaq eventually learned about the two spirits, Vaatu and Raava. He did however believe that the spirits should coexist with humans.

After learning the history of how the Avatar came into existence, Unalaq still strongly believed that humans and spirits should co-exist. He believed that despite there being an Avatar, it should be possible. This was contrary to Wan’s idea to separate the two species by closing the spirit portals.

As he grew older, Unalaq came up with a plan to achieve his goal. This was to free Vaatu during the next Harmonic Convergence and fuse with him in order to become a Dark Avatar. He created this plan that went contrary to the Red Lotus’ goals of destroying the Avatar and the Avatar Cycle altogether.

As time went by, he would later betray the organization in order to pursue his own goals. He also carefully covered his tracks and conspired with Vaatu to pursue this goal.

As time went by, he was able to manipulate Avatar Korra into opening the spirit portals in order for Vaatu to free himself. This was all part of his plan to fuse with Vaatu and become the Dark Avatar.

After Vaatu escaped from the Tree of Time, he was able to fuse with Unalaq, using the overlap of energy from the two spirit portals. This was during the harmonic convergence in 171 AG. This fusion process created the Dark Avatar.

Who is the Dark Avatar?

Dark Avatar vs Light Avatar

The resulting process created the Dark Avatar. Much soon after this, UnaVaatu began to promptly battle the Avatar for the fate of the world.

Despite the years of mastery from Korra and a strong showing from both Avatars, Unalaq, having much more bending discipline and endurance, managed to subdue Korra. At this point, Vaatu emerged from his mouth, latched onto Korra’s face, and pulled Raava out of Korra’s body.

With the use of his water bending, which had been enhanced with Vaatu’s dark energy, Unalaq was able to destroy Raava. Thus, he severed Korra’s connection to her past lives forever in that process. After he had defeated Raava and thus was no longer hindered by the influence of light in the world, the Dark Avatar, Unalaq, and Vaatu grew significantly more powerful. This was displayed by the Dark Avatar growing significantly in size to a height several feet taller than it was when it battled Korra.

After he had grown drastically, he then went ahead to declare the era of the Avatar to be over. The Dark Avatar used the spirit lights to transport himself to Republic City. Here, he promptly proceeded to begin wreaking havoc on the city’s infrastructure using vine-like projections.

Despite heavy artillery that was brought in by the United Forces, the Dark Avatar was able to use enhanced water bending to scatter the battleships as well as knock the lead police airship and a formation of biplanes from the sky, prompting President Raiko and Chief Lin Beifong to evacuate.

Korra, refusing to give up began to fight back. She later finds out that a portion of Raava is in her, although very weak. She was eventually able to defeat UnaVaatu.

Hama (Avatar): The Creator of Bloodbending in Avatar

In the world of Avatar, there is something we can’t ignore. Bending is incredible. Having control over one of the elements brings some major advantages, but looking at all the different variations of bending it is clear that some are much more powerful than others. Just by looking at masters like Hama, we distinguish one bending style that is better than the rest. The art of bloodbending is not only creepy but incredibly powerful. Trying to fight a bloodbending master is even deadly. In today’s post, we will discuss how Hama showed us what we consider to be the most powerful bending in Avatar.

How Hama Extended Bending in Avatar

Avatar did an excellent job showing how the elements adapted and evolved. The four primary elements eventually got a nice addition to them with a little extra flair, but after examining all the different and unique bending styles we have concluded that bloodbending is the most powerful. We’re not just saying that because a creepy old lady is manipulating the fingers of those who write on this blog but because there are many proofs along with the show.

When people talk about the most powerful bending styles they often overlook water when comparing it to fire or earth, but after watching the show many times we have a new appreciation for waterbending. This style can be devastatingly powerful if used correctly. It also provides strong defense as well as healing abilities, which gives waterbenders a great advantage.

With this, it is no wonder that their evolution was one of the best and scariest.
It seems that every improvement or evolution in one of the primary bending styles comes from a great trauma; Zaheer learned to fly after watching his beloved P’Li explode. Toph invented metal bending after being confined in a cage. So how did bloodbending begin? That’s where Hama comes in.

The History of Hama

Hama was a waterbender from the southern water tribe that the fire nation captured in a raid, imprisoning her for many years. The fire nation was quite cunning when it came to controlling their prisoners. They made sure to keep certain elements away from the waterbenders and took extra precautions with them. For example, they purposely kept humidity to a minimum and chained their arms and legs when giving them water to drink.

Hama was subjected to horrible conditions, but she would not stay that way. Each month Hama felt stronger because of the full moon and she realized that if she escaped it would be during one of those nights. She discovered that during the full moon she could manipulate the bodies of the elephant rats around her.

Controlling the water in their blood, she didn’t care how brutal or unethical it was. She was consumed by the feeling of revenge. So, even though it took her years of practice, only being able to use her power to its fullest on full moons. Hama developed her skills enough to become a full-blood master to then control the guard of her cage to free herself.

It was not enough for Hama to escape and return home. She moved to a village in the Fire Nation where every full moon she controlled the villagers in the village and kept them in chains as the Fire Nation did to her.

Introduce Team Avatar to Hama

When Team Avatar showed up in the village Hama wanted to make Katara his heir and pass on his new waterbending ability, but Katara recognized how dangerous it could be. She watched Hama drain the life from nearby objects to extract water from them and eventually saw her reveal her true intentions.

Although Katara was initially against something as cruel and unethical as bloodbending she had to subdue Hama with bloodbending to save Aang and Sokka. This fight means a lot on a narrative level if we think for a moment that Hama’s bloodbending was so powerful that it incapacitated the avatar instantly and almost killed him. That’s why Katara had to resort to bloodbending to stop Hama.

Katara had to do something evil to prevent something eviler, this makes bloodbending so dangerous. Anyone who could handle it could win any fight and it would be tempting to use it to defeat her enemies by forcing them to retreat. Katara vowed she would never use it again, she recognized the danger and knew it was a dark bending style she shouldn’t mess with.

The Power and Dangers of Bloodbending

Although we know that Katara used it again while facing the man who killed her mother with Zuko. Katara used bloodbending on a full moon to unleash her fury when anger and rage got the better of her. She then paused to think about the morality of bloodbending, but it undoubtedly proved that she should not be messed with on any day, but especially on a full moon

There is a balance to bloodbending as with most of the powers from the show. It is incredibly dangerous and effective, so much so that only powerful waterbenders could use it, but moreover, it could only be performed on a full moon. But things change and if there’s one thing we’ve learned about bending in the world of Avatar is that it’s prone to evolution and drastic change. Change may start as an anomaly, but then it becomes something more powerful and generally accepted.

Hama and Her Legacy Continued Into Legend of Korra

In the Legend of Korra, we can see how a powerful crime lord in Republic City who adult Aang and his team had to deal with appeared. By that time bloodbending was forbidden in Republic City, but there was a growing group of waterbenders who could perform this ability in an even more dangerous way. Yakone, the crime lord we spoke of had taken bloodbending to the next level. Being able to wield it without a full moon.

This was a total game-changer, practicing bloodbending without a full moon removed the major restriction to the skill and suddenly it became the most powerful bending style. Although at first, no one could believe it was possible, Yakone’s entire defense at his trial said it was impossible to do bloodbending without a full moon, but the council led by Sokka cleverly pointed out that certainly, it should be impossible but they had already seen some strange things over the years. And that bending has always been able to evolve.

This led Yakone to fully unleash his power by bloodbending the room full of people, including Sokka, Toph, and Aang. All without moving his hands, so much power was incredibly dangerous in the hands of a criminal bent on ruling Republic City. So Aang knew what he had to do. Yakone almost finished off the avatar, but fortunately, the avatar state helped him out of that predicament. Aang restrained Yakone and ended up taking away his waterbending powers.

The Evil of Bloodbending Being Passed Down

We might think that this is the end of the antagonists using bloodbending, but after being defeated Yakone finally escaped from prison and fled to the Northern Water Tribe, where he had two sons: Noatak and Tarrlok who would become waterbenders. Yakone trained them in bloodbending to the point Noatak and Tarrlok, with their different shades would become antagonists to the avatar of the day.

Because of all this, we believe that bloodbending is the most incredible bending style, not only it is one of the most powerful, devastating, and deadly that can be applied to a person, but it also continues to grow and evolve. In a short period, we went from Hama using bloodbending on a full moon to take revenge on the Fire Nation to Noatak “Amon” using it to appear to remove control forever. All in less than 100 years.

The ability to incapacitate your enemies before they can attack could save many lives, but at a terrible moral cost. If a normal bloodbender like Yakone could control a room without using his hands how powerful would the avatar be if he used this ability? Could he control an entire city by entering the avatar state and bloodbending everyone?

Final Thoughts On Bloodbending & Hama

It sounds terrifying, but we consider that the story leaves us with a moral from the chapter in which we are introduced to the ability. Hama, as well as all the bloodbenders shown in the series, were blinded by power and although they were all incredibly powerful. The craving consumed them. Bloodbending is very similar to how Toph created metal bending. It helped to take the series to another level.

What do you think of bloodbending, do you think it is the most powerful bending in the world of Avatar?

Sokka objected to the math. As he was the fourth person there, he told her that there were four people. Toph responded, telling him she did not consider him as a fighter because he could not bend. Sokka was offended by this, taking it very personally. He mentioned that despite the bending handicap, he could still fight.Toph didn’t let up though. She teased him back by saying “Okay, three on three plus Sokka”.

2. When Toph Appreciated Sokka’s Art

Sokka is often considered the comic relief of the series, so more often than not, he is not taken very seriously. We see this especially in Season 2, where the Avatar Gang reached Ba Sing Se in search of Appa. Sokka tried to contribute to the search by making a drawing of Appa to use as “Missing” posters. Everyone else made fun of his art, saying it was nothing like Appa.

It is here that Toph and Sokka’s friendship is really highlighted. Toph was the only one who appreciated his drawing; telling him that the drawing looked just like Appa to her. Sokka had begun to thank her before he realized that she was making fun of him; since she was blind and could not have seen the drawing.

3. Toph and Sokka’s Friendship At Its Best: When She Genuinely Missed Him

In the season 3 episode “Sokka’s Master,” when Team Avatar was in the Fire Nation, Sokka wanted to learn professional swordsmanship. There, he found a teacher for himself named Pian Dao. While he was away training for his new skill, the rest of the gang members became bored without his antics.

Toph said that she missed Sokka. When he came back, she turned away and blushed while telling him that she did not care that he was gone. Sokka, however, understood and said he was touched. It was just another instance when their friendship really blossomed.

4. When They Had A Heart-To-Heart Conversation

After Katara and Toph had a huge fight over Toph scamming Fire Nation citizens, Sokka pulled his friend aside to have a heart-to-heart conversation.

Toph and Sokka went on to have a very lengthy conversation about the state of things. Sokka opened up to Toph about Katara and how she had been such a source of strength for him. On her end, Toph also agreed that Katara was actually not that bad. Neither of them had ever opened up about something like this to anyone else. It was a great moment to share.

5. Toph and Sokka’s Friendship At Its Best: When Sokka Complained About The Dark

In the season two episode; “The Drill,” Team Avatar devised a plan to get inside the drill. Their plan was to stay hidden underground until the drill came directly above them and then sneak in once it did. Toph made a hole in the ground and everyone jumped in.

When she closed the hole, Sokka complained about how it was so dark in there that he could not see anything, forgetting that Toph was blind. Toph sarcastically shot back mentioning how much of a nightmare that must be. He realized his mistake and immediately apologized.

6. When She Almost Crushed Him

In the episode “The Desert,” Team Avatar got attacked by a horde of Buzzard Wasps at night. Since these creatures were flying ones, Toph could not see where they were, but she was still trying to help by bending rocks to throw at them.

She threw a huge boulder at one of the creatures and narrowly missed, crushing Sokka underneath it. She apologized to him, and he replied that he would take care of this problem. This indicated that he considered her to be close enough to him for him to not be offended by what she did. He perfectly understood her.

7. Toph and Sokka’s Friendship At Its Best: The Way She Clung Onto Him On Appa

There were several points in the show where Toph and Sokka would sit close to each other as they flew on Appa. Most of those times, Toph would hold on Sokka clinging to him, or would simply just link her arm with his arm.

Seeing them sitting together, just hanging out as friends and talking, was really an endearing sight to see. With scenes like those in the show, it was easy to normalize platonic friendships between two characters of different genders. Toph and Sokka’s friendship helped to make platonic relationships between friends of the opposite gender.

8. When He Took Her To Safety

In the episode “The Desert,” after Aang found out that the sandbenders had kidnapped Appa and muzzled him, he flew into a monstrous rage. He was so upset that he went into the Avatar state; and it looked like he was about to destroy everyone in front of him. Sand was flying everywhere as Aang rose into the sky. It was already difficult for Toph to see in the desert because of the sand, and now she was completely helpless. Sokka came to her rescue, taking Toph and running away from danger. It’s a testament to the Toph and Sokka friendship that in the face of danger, Sokka’s first instinct wasn’t to run away, but to save Toph. He could have instinctively run away to safety, but he didn’t.

9. Toph and Sokka Friendship At Its Best: When She Saved Him

In “The Serpent’s Pass” episode, Team Avatar had the task of walking across a very narrow and dangerous path to get across to the other side. As they made their way, some Fire Nations soldiers caught wind of them and tried to stop them.

One of the soldier’s attacks caused a huge amount of debris to fall. The debris would have fallen right on top of Sokka and buried him underneath, but Toph deflected it with the use of earthbending.

10. Toph and Sokka Friendship At Its Best: When They Were About To Die

In the final battle against the Fire Nation, Toph and Sokka were on a Fire Nation airship, fighting their army. While deflecting an attack from one of the soldiers, they fell off the side of the airship.

Sokka held on to Toph tightly as she hung in the air. Soon they were surrounded by the Fire Nation soldiers, and it seemed like they were going to be killed. Sokka could have saved himself if he had let go of Toph, but he held on to her and was ready to die with her. Yet, despite everything that happened between them, they still couldn’t let go of the awkwardness between them. Luckily, they survived the onslaught and went on to win the war.

Ursa (Avatar): What Happened To Zuko’s Mother

We see Ursa (Avatar) get banished from the Fire Nation in Avatar: The Last Airbender; and we don’t hear much about her for most of the series’ run. However, the follow-up comics answer what happened next.

Zuko lost his mother, Ursa while he was still but a young lad; and we don’t know much about why this happened – until the tie-in comics were released a couple of years after the show ended. We learn exactly why she disappeared – and what happened to her afterward.

As Fire Lord Ozai’s exiled son, Zuko spends much of Avatar: The Last Airbender acting as an antagonist towards Aang and his friends. This is because capturing the Avatar is the only way that Zuko can ever return to the Fire Nation. As time goes on, he redeems himself and ends up defeating his fighting alongside Aang.

Ursa (Avatar) History

Zuko’s mother is called Ursa (avatar), and she is the granddaughter of The Fire Nation Avatar before Aang; Avatar Roku. In The Last Airbender we see that she made some kind of deal in order to protect Zuko’s life; when his father was planning to kill him. Afterwards, she gets sent away from the Fire Nation.

However, the series of sequel comics written by Gene Luen Yang with The Last Airbender creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, which are set in the days after Aang defeats Fire Lord Ozai show an extra dimension to the story.

One of theseLast Airbender comics; The Search, details Zuko’s quest to find out what happened to his mother. He seeks to even be reunited with her.

Why Zuko’s Mother Ursa Was Banished

Zuko’s grandfather, Fire Lord Azulon, came across a prophecy about mixing his bloodline with that of Avatar Roku’s. He learned that it would produce descendants with great power; further securing his family’s place on the throne long after he passed. In response, he tracked down Ursa (Avatar), forcing her to marry Ozai; even though she was already betrothed to someone else. This man was named Ikem.

Azulon would end up doing himself in through his actions. When Iroh’s son died in the war, Ozai crossed the line; angering his father by asking him to pass Iroh’s throne birthright to him instead. As punishment for such a request, Azulon wanted Ozai to feel the pain that Iroh had felt of losing his firstborn son, and so he ordered Ozai to kill Zuko.

Upon discovering this, Ursa (Avatar) and Ozai made a deal. She would use her herbal skills to concoct a poison that was colorless and odorless, so that Azulon would be killed and Ozai could take his place as Fire Lord. Ozai agreed to this on one condition; after Azulon was dead, Ursa would leave the Fire Nation and never return. He requested this so that she could never use the same poison on him. A sad Ursa (Avatar) had no choice but to agree and was forced to leave her children behind.

What Happened To Ursa (Avatar) After She Was Banished

After Ursa avatar fled the Fire Nation Palace, she returned to the village where she was born. There, she met a man called Noren – who was actually Ikem. having asked a spirit called the Mother of Faces to change his appearance so he could escape Ozai’s wrath.

Ursa decided she would make a similar deal, but when the Mother of Faces felt the pain in Ursa’s heart she offered something extra: not only a new face but a new mind, where all her memories of her life as Ozai’s wife would be erased. Ursa made the difficult choice to forget her children along with the rest of her former life and was given a new face and a new name: Noriko. She and Noren lived in peace together for many years and had a daughter called Kiyi – Zuko and Azula’s half-sister.

Zuko Is Reunited With His Mother

Zuko first meets Noren and Noriko in The Search without realizing that they are actually Ikem and Ursa. After learning the truth from the Mother of Faces, he returns to the village and reveals to Ursa that he is her son. Ursa chooses to have her face and memories restored and she and Zuko are finally properly reunited.

Azula, unfortunately, doesn’t feel quite so warm towards her mother. Having been driven mad at the end of Avatar: The Last Airbender, she believes that Ursa has been secretly plotting her downfall all her life and is responsible for everything bad that’s ever happened to her.

Zuko manages to stop Azula from killing Ursa, and watches helplessly as his sister runs away. The Search ends with Ursa promising to tell Zuko everything about her life, starting from the very beginning.

Later in the comics, Ursa returns to the Fire Nation Palace for the first time since she was banished and finally confronts Ozai again – now powerless and locked up in the dungeons. He proceeds to threaten to destroy everyone she loves, but Ursa sees him for what he really is: “a small, small man.” She walks away, no longer afraid of her former husband, ignoring him as he impotently orders her to grovel for him.
