Sokka and Suki: Were They Soulmates or Not?

When it comes to detailing relationships in Avatar the Last Airbender, one character we come to find to have a bit of a womanizing nature is Sokka. Over the series, we can see Sokka develop a string of romantic relationships, from his ill-fated relationship with Princess Yue to flirting with Ty Lee mid-battle. But one relationship that seemed to be stable in this context was between Sokka and Suki.

In truth, because most of it takes place within the invasion and Sozin’s comet arcs, the Sokka and Suki relationship is one of the most underrated relationships of the series. Even though the couple has garnered fan approval over the years, Sokka and Suki get talked about less often. For one thing, their relationship was not talked about at all on The Legend of Korra. Suki was not even featured at all.

While it would be great to know more about them and their outcome in the official canon, we do know some things for sure. There were many great things about the Sokka and Suki relationship, as well as some things that just made their relationship bad. Here are the reasons Sokka and Suki were soulmates, and the reasons they were clearly not.

Sokka and Suki Weren’t Soulmates Because Sokka Was A Sexist In The Beginning

At the beginning of ATLA, we are introduced to Sokka and the blatant fact that he holds sexist beliefs. He is very demeaning to women, especially his sister Katara. He is not even a very likeable character at the start of the series. Later, we see him mete out the same treatment to Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors.

Thankfully, he changes his views on women, becoming much more respectful and believing in equality. However, it does seem odd that Suki would be interested in him so quickly  after he was so sexist. It doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Suki Didn’t Let Sokka Disrespect Her

So while Sokka and Suki’s atttraction is indeed odd, owing to Sokka’s treatment of the female gender, it is clear that Suki did not condone such beliefs. She clearly was no pushover.

She shows Sokka just how wrong he is, by showcasing her prowess as a much more skilled warrior than he is. She’s not going to let herself be disrespected. Moreover, the two don’t even actually get together until very much later in the series.

Sokka and Suki Weren’t Soulmates Because Suki Was Put Too Much In A Love Interest Role

No doubt Suki is an excellent character from the Last Airbender. But this is overshadowed by the fact that she is clearly underrated. Suki doesn’t get as much screen time or scenes as Team Avatar or villains like Zuko and Azula. Sure, she does help Team Avatar quite a lot in the series, but she is primarily relegated to the role of a love interest for Sokka.

This is rather unfortunate, as Suki was a character with a lot of potential. You would expect more from a character as interesting as the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors.

Sokka and Suki Were Both Non-Benders

Sokka and Suki had quite a lot in common. Primarily they were both non-benders who had learned skills to fight without needing bending. Taking into consideration that Sokka was often out of place because he couldn’t bend, it was a nice touch to have him end up with someone who could understand his particular struggle.

Because of this quality, they were both able to relate more intimately, and the issue of power imbalances wouldn’t have even existed. That is, as far as natural abilities go. Suki was a perfect match for Sokka.

We Didn’t Get To See Enough Of The Sokka and Suki Relationship

Sokka and Suki may have had a relationship that fans really liked, but one thing that bothers most people is the fact that we do not get to see much of their relationship. This factor makes it seem unlikely that Sokka and Suki were soulmates or even meant to be. Out of all the relationships on the show, theirs was one of the least developed; thanks to distances and what nots.

Because of this, many have argued that it seems as though the creators weren’t intending to make the relationship canon. Maybe they were not even meant to be together in the end, considering more details about the other members of Team Avatar and their relationships are explicitly given. The fact that Sokka and Suki’s relationship is left so ambiguous doesn’t bode well for them.

Sokka And Suki Were Soulmates Because They Had Really Good Chemistry

Building up on the fact that we do not get to see enough of Sokka and Suki, one fact remains that what we did get to see was enough to show that they were getting along really well after their initial meeting. It’s sad but it is a good thing as well; bittersweet if you may.

Their personalities seemed to click on an overall basis. They really had an easy and good chemistry, and the presence of conflicts is either nonexistent or squashed pretty quickly. They don’t seem like the kind of couple that would have that many fights. If they do, they would be trivial, and perhaps be resolved very quickly.

Sokka Does Seem To Be More In Love With Yue

One major reason it doesn’t look like Sokka and Suki are soulmates can be attributed to a certain moon-related lady. Sokka and Yue had something long before he met Suki, and had the princess not sacrificed her life essence to bring the moon spirit back to life, perhaps Sokka and Suki might have never happened.

It does make sense that Sokka has lingering feelings for the girlfriend that died tragically; but it seemed those feelings were stronger than what he felt for Suki. He held on to her memory for quite a long time.

This doesn’t imply that Sokka was incapable of loving someone again, afterall, he does get involved with Suki. However, it takes away a lot from said relationship, leaving it less impactful. It was loads awkward to watch him try to deal with this and get over Yue relatively quickly.

Sokka and Suki Were Soulmates Because They Were Both Really Talented Warriors

One other reason why Sokka and Suki would make a great couple is that they had so much in common as far as skill sets and perspectives on the world.

They were both talented warriors in their own ways, and being able to protect people in this way meant a lot to them both. It seems that because of this that they would have similar outlooks that could help them bond, and they could also enjoy things like training together.

They Might Have Been Better Off With Other People

We do admit that Sokka and Suki were a very good couple overall, complimenting each other in various ways. However, despite this, it seems they might have been better off with some other partners. Sokka’s very strong feelings for Yue are a fact to consider, not to mention the fact that he and Toph are together in adulthood.

Suki isn’t shown as having any other romantic relationships, but it’s not hard to imagine her being happy with someone else, possibly one of the other Kyoshi warriors. That would definitely flesh out the LGBTQ community in the ATLA series.

They Had A Balanced Relationship

At first, Sokka may operate on the belief that women are not as capable as men, but he quickly sees that this is not true. After a hard lesson, he and Suki seemed to be very matched in a lot of ways.

They are both talented warriors and leaders, and they have similar but different personalities that complement one another. Sokka is quite funny and a bit of a goofy character. Suki is much more serious, but she does know how to enjoy a good time. Their relationship was definitely one of the very balanced ones

Personal Information on The Azula Voice Actor

DeLisle grew up in a relatively challenging home. Her mother was heavily addicted to drugs which caused her to live with her grandmother for a good part of her childhood.

Her grandmother is Eva Flores Ruth, a vocalist who performed with salsa legend Tito Puente.

DeLisle was heavily into goth bands like The Cure but, who had become a born-again Pentecostal, set a strict rule banned secular music. In her teenage years, she started singing old gospel songs and eventually got into stand-up comedy.

In her comedy routine, DeLisle imitated voices particularly well and was advised to take a shot at voice acting. Her first starring role came in 1994 in the original English version of Crayon Shin-Chan, as the voices of characters Cosmo and Uma.

Delisle was born on August 24, 1973

Fort Ord, California.

After a few months in a long-distance relationship, DeLisle married her musician Murry in 2002. He was a bassist for the Old 97’s. They were featured in an episode of The Learning Channel program A Wedding Story. Their first child, Jefferson Texas “Tex” Hammond, was born on January 31, 2007, in Los Angeles, California.

DeLisle’s Career Other Than Being The Azula Voice Actor

She was tagged as a “Superstar Voice Actress” on the Anime News Network.

DeLisle has played the leading role in a large number of animated series.

Harp Magazine even went as far as calling DeLisle “golden-voiced.” She is highly recognized for her many roles over the years. Some of her roles include Vicky and Tootie in The Fairly Oddparents, Daphne in What’s New, Scooby-Doo?, and Emily Elizabeth in Clifford the Big Red Dog.

On top of her several English-speaking roles, she also speaks Japanese as the character Yumi on Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi.

She has been tagged as multi-talented and regarded highly in the Voice acting field. DeLisle has even had a lot of voice acting roles in many video games, such as Escape from Monkey Island, Baldur’s Gate 2, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, and several Star Wars games. She also voices the Dark Jedi, Asajj Ventress, in Star Wars: Clone Wars, Therese and Jeanette (Tourette) Voerman in the White Wolf RPG, PC game Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, Samantha Manson in Danny Phantom, Frankie in Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, and Frida Suárez in El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera. DeLisle has released four music CDs, which include goth-inspired folk and Americana tunes and a few gospel-style songs.

DeLisle: The Azula Voice Actor

She is widely recognized for her role as Princess Azula. She is the Princess of the fire nation, a young sister to Zuko, Daughter of Ursa and Ozai. Azula is a complicated child with a chaotic complex. Her mother often reflected on what to do with her. She always had an odd penchant for macabre things, enjoying darker things.

She was named after her Grandfather, Fire Lord Azulon. She is regarded as a true fire-bending prodigy, exhibiting talents beyond her age, even at a young age. She was applauded, whereas her brother Zuko always got the shorter end of the stick.

Azula has this sinister vibe to her character, which DeLisle brought to life perfectly. She seemed perfectly normal but still maintained a dangerous facet. Threatening lightning with a dark smile while she was at it.

Delisle created a masterpiece with the character Azula.

Tenzin (Avatar): His History and Legacy

Tenzin is the youngest child of the three children from Katara and Avatar Aang. He is also an Air bending master that lives on the Air Temple. He has two other siblings, Bumi and Kya. At this time, he is head of the makeshift Air Nation. A group of devout and stoic people that have dedicated their lives to preserving the legacy of the Air Nation. These people are known as the Air Acolytes. Tenzin has a wife named Pema and their four children: Jinora, Ikki, Meelo, and Rohan.

After harmonic convergence, when Air benders began to pop up all over the Earth kingdom, Tenzin and the Acolytes relocated to the Northern air temple to better accommodate the new changes that Harmonic convergence created.

Tenzin is serious, often referred to as too a serious man. He is also calm and a key figure in the Republic City. A city that was made for the unity of all bending nations.

Tenzin represented the Air Nation on the United Republic Council in Republic City before its dissolution. He was responsible for educating Avatar Korra in the ways of airbending and spirituality. Being the last airbending master and the son of the previous Avatar, he was the logical choice to guide Korra in the ways of becoming an Avatar even if he didn’t know much himself.

Tenzin’s History

Tenzin being the only Airbender that had been born in over a hundred years and was drilled extensively in the ways of air bending. He was taught the customs, traditions, and many guidelines of the Air Nomads. He eventually grew and earned the traditional air bending tattoos that symbolize being a realized bender. As kids, Tenzin would often be the object of bullying from his older brother and sister.

After the identity of the new Avatar (Avatar Korra) was revealed, Tenzin pulled resources and joined forces with the Southern Chief Sokka, Fire Lord Zuko, and Korra’s father, Tonraq. They did this to prevent a kidnapping threat that was posed by Zaheer, Ghazan, Ming-Hua, and P’Li. These people wanted to capture the Avatar in infancy and hone her to their will.

The alliance was able to defeat and apprehend the criminals and imprison them. They put these people in four separate and specially-designed prisons that would neutralize their combative abilities. Because of this threat, Tenzin and Tonraq decided to move Korra to the Southern Water Tribe compound, where she could safely train. They did this while keeping the information of what had happened away from her, supposedly for her own protection.

Teenage Years for Tenzin (Avatar

In his teenage years, Tenzin was friends with Lin Beifong, the daughter of Toph Beifong. Toph is known as the greatest Earth bender in the world and was able to create an alternative form of bending called Metal bending. She did this by harnessing the earth particles that are present in refined metal and bend them to her will. Lin was trained in the ways of Metal bending and took after her mother. She succeeded Toph as the chief of Republic city police.

Tenzin and she, at some point, were a couple. However, their romantic relationship did not last because Tenzin wanted children, and Lin did not.

As their relationship was slowly falling apart, Pema approached the Airbender and confessed her feelings for him. This caused Tenzin to break up with Lin and start a new relationship with Pema instead.

Tenzin and Pema eventually married, and by the time Korra had come to Republic City to learn airbending, their family consisted of three children: two daughters, Jinora and Ikki, a son named Meelo, and a fourth child on the way. He succeeded an Air Acolyte in being the representative of the Air Nation on the United Republic Council.

Helping The New Avatar

After Korra had completed training on all the other three elements, Tenzin began her airbending training. When it was time to begin, Tenzin became aware that it would be hard for her as it was her direct opposite. Mastery of the element Air required patience, calm, and cool-headedness as opposed to her hot-headed nature.

He told her that she needed to be patient, which was definitely the last thing she needed to hear. They both soon got frustrated as they would often clash for different reasons. One of these reasons was Korra’s inability to air bend and about how the teenage girl should spend her free time. Which apparently to Tenzin was more quiet and calmer ways such as meditation and other spiritually enlightening activities.

On one of her many disappearances, Korra witnessed something horrific. It was a man named Amon, taking away a man’s bending. After Korra returned from an Equalist rally and stated how Amon had succeeded in taking away someone’s bending ability, Tenzin stated that the revolution was more dangerous than ever.

Tenzin On The Council

As a council member, Tenzin tried his best to avoid anti-non bender measures to be taken, though he was unable to prevent Tarrlok from forming his task force to attack Amon head-on. Tarrlok later turned to be Amon’s brother. After Korra publicly challenged Amon to a duel, Tenzin tried to dissuade her, to no avail, and afterward offered her comfort when she cried in fear of Amon.

After this encounter, Tenzin and the rest of the United Republic Council were threatened by Amon to shut down the Pro-bending Arena or face “severe consequences.”

Despite Tenzin’s disapproval, the rest of the Council voted to keep the arena open, which proved to be a horrible decision as Amon and his Equalists blew up part of the arena in their attack. The Equalists are a group of people who believe that bending should be eradicated because it brings inequality. Their fight is to bring equality to all the nations by cleansing them of its taint, Bending.

With Lin and Korra’s help, Tenzin discovered that Hiroshi Sato had ties to the Equalists, though the ensuing confrontation nearly led to their capture.

When Korra was kidnapped, Tenzin set out to find her, together with Lin, Asami, Mako, and Bolin. After they discovered an Equalist hideout and rescued several captured Republic City Police officers, Tenzin realized that Tarrlok was the one who was holding Korra captive. They eventually found the Avatar as she was being carried through the city by Naga.

A host of events occurred during Tenzin’s time as the Avatar’s spiritual guide tutor.

Tenzin is a master Airbender, and even though he never succeeded in the aspect of spiritual development like his father, he is still one of the best air benders in the Avatar Universe.

Rebuilding The Air Nation

One of Tenzin’s biggest roles on the show was helping to rebuild the air nation. He was the son of Aang that could Air Bend and he ended up having kids that could as well. This made his family the last airbenders in the world.

The world naturally tried to find balance again and it started giving people the ability to airbend out of no where. He took it on as his duty to go out and try to rebuild the air nation. It was one of the most noble tasks he could take on because it allowed the world to see true balance once again.

Avatar Kuruk: 10 Facts You Didn’t Know About Him

Avatar Kuruk is perhaps the most misunderstood Avatar of all time. People said he was a go with the flow, laid back kind of Avatar; but that is just enough proof that he really was misunderstood and people didn’t know as much about him as they thought or should have.

Some even hated him, based on the information provided by the show. His successor, Kyoshi was one of those who had a serious bone to pick with him; to the point that her displeasure with him blocked her access to her past lives.

Before the tie-in novels were released, there weren’t that many details on Avatar Kuruk’s life. Most of what was known came from Aang’s conversations with his past lives as he searched for the best way to handle Firelord Ozai in the coming showdown.

During their conversation, Avatar Kuruk revealed to Aang that he was quite easygoing, and as the Avatar of a prosperous era thanks to Yangchen’s actions, he was a bit carefree. He explained that his lax attitude had grave consequences however, as his inaction eventually led to the loss of his wife at the hands of the evil spirit Koh the Face Stealer.

Avatar Kuruk then admonished Aang to be active about shaping his destiny; in order to not repeat his mistakes. Before we can learn anything else about him; he vanishes.

From the online story Escape from the Spirit World which delved further into Avatar Kuruk’s history, and the graphic novel The Rise of Kyoshi where we are truly involved with an in depth narrative on more about the Northern Water Tribe Avatar, we get to piece together the puzzle. Here are the facts about Avatar Kuruk.

1. Avatar Kuruk Did Not Accept Traditional Training

While Avatar Kuruk was one of the most intelligent Avatars, he holds the penchant for also being one of the most arrogant.

When the Water Tribe sages used the ancient tradition of determining the new Avatar, which involves the earthbending of a gemstone into the air; Avatar Kuruk was found to be the chosen one. It was his first attempt at bending, and it really opened a door in Kuruk’s head, and in no short time, he was already excellent at his native waterbending and earthbending. He was assigned an earthbending master from the city of Ba Sing Se named Jianzhu, and in no time they became best of friends.

However, Avatar Kuruk and Jianzhu did not really take the traditional training of the old bending masters quite seriously. And so, they were often found playing pai sho instead.

2. Avatar Kuruk Was A Womanizer

Avatar Kuruk really loved women; to a fault. He was constantly showboating; getting their attention and affection in the process of impressing them. And he had no boundaries.

Avatar Kuruk’s first firebending master was a woman by the name of Hei-Ran. The moment he set eyes on her, Kuruk wanted to be with her. Of course, this would mark Kuruk’s first mistake with women, as Hei-Ran brutally turned him down. She explained that a relationship between them was forbidden and would be taboo as they were on duty.

As if things were not already tense, Kuruk would make another mistake when he had an encounter with spirits. He sustained injuries, but was attended to by a woman. In true fashion, Avatar Kuruk slept with her, losing him a lot of respect from Hei-Ran. If ever there was a chance before, it was gone now. Till the end of his journey as Avatar, Kuruk would pine for Hei-Ran; all to no avail.

3. Avatar Kuruk Was An Amazing Pai Sho Legend

Everyone knows that one of Avatar Kuruk’s most favorite things in the world was playing pai sho. A favorite pastime of characters like Uncle Iroh and members of the White Lotus society, pai sho is a very popular table game across the four nations. Kuruk was an extremely intelligent person, and this contributed to him being referred to as “one of the best pai sho players who ever lived.”

Avatar Kuruk was such an avid fan of the pai sho game that the Avatar’s overall philosophy in life was influenced by it. It also helped to contribute to his personal betterment in the long run.

4. He Inherited A Spirit World That Was Unbalanced From His Predecessor, Avatar Yangchen

Avatar Yangchen was the highly revered Avatar that came before Kuruk. She was highly skilled in the art of negotiation and diplomacy. However, for all her skills with handling human beings, even she admitted that her actions neglected the spirit world; and left it unbalanced as at the time of her death. Yangchen defeated an ancient spirit, and this in turn darkened the spirit world, which Kuruk inherited.

Avatar Kuruk defeated the spirit Heartwalker, who had threatened to take out the Yaoping Town settlement. The fight took a massive toll on Kuruk’s spirit. It was so bad that he fell sick, even frothing at the mouth and shivering. After he recovered and was rehabilitated, Avatar Kuruk slipped into a deep depression. Matter of fact, it is unknown to most, but Kuruk saved the world from dark spirits.

For whatever reason, probably because he was the Avatar, the spirits tormented Avatar Kuruk constantly. They flooded his mind and would leave him restless. Kuruk was plagued with constant visions of evil being done, but in his bid to not worry his friends, he would fight the dark spirits alone. Every time Kuruk took on and defeated a dark spirit, his own spirit would be darkened.

To cope with his demons, Avatar Kuruk started drinking, sleeping around and would pick fights with everyone and everything just so he could feel human again. He had already received warning early on that he would not live a long life. Instead Avatar Kuruk saw that drinking, women and adrenaline-fueled adventure helped him ease the silent suffering he faced throughout the years. It turns out he was not as carefree and irresponsible as people thought he was.

6. He Accidentally Cursed The Avatar Spirit

At some point, Kuruk got fed up with the cracks in his reality caused by the darkening spirit world. He took it upon himself to find the root of all these problems and this led to a confrontation with a very dangerous spirit named Father Glowworm.

Kuruk accidentally switched names with the dark spirit, and ended up putting a curse on the Avatar forever. He did however manage to strike a blow to Father Glowworm that was significant, but he left the fight permanently and spiritually damaged.

7. His Marriage To Ummi Was A Doomed One From The Start

Avatar Kuruk was not interested in settling down at any point, that is until he met Ummi, who was from the Southern Water Tribe. He fell in love with her, and she with him, almost instantly. That same night, he granted her a betrothal necklace. On the day they were to be married, tragedy struck as Koh the face stealer pulled Ummi into the ocean.

Koh did this because he was angered by Avatar Kuruk’s arrogance and interference in the spirit world. So, he stole Ummi’s face to teach the Avatar a lesson.

8. Avatar Kuruk Neglected His Avatar Duties And Instead Focused On Revenge

After Koh the face stealer stole Ummi’s face, Kuruk was beside himself with anger and grief. He set out on a mission to avenge her, and spent the rest of his life searching for the dark spirit. His intention was to find him and slay him with any chance he got. He never did get over losing Ummi, and all that grief consumed him, depleting all of his energy spiritually.

During this time, he was only concerned with his personal affairs, so that for much of his lifetime, he put nearly all of his energy towards individual goals instead of the four nations of the world. By the time he died, the world was in much turmoil, so much that the Earth Kingdom was taken over by a group of terrorists known as the Fifth Nation Pirates. The Fire Nation on the other hand was riddled with poverty and disease.

9. Avatar Kuruk Succumbed To His Inner Demons And Died At A Young Age

You’d think Aang passing at age 66 was a shocking age, but Kuruk was perhaps the youngest Avatar to die. He was just 33 when he finally gave up the ghost; a tragic end to a tragic and misunderstood legacy. It is only made more ironic when you realise that his predecessor, Kyoshi would live on to be 230 years of age; almost seven times his age, and one of the oldest Avatars to live.

After his death, his friends began to look for the new Avatar from the earth kingdom, as a means to compensate for failing their friend. However, they wouldn’t even find Kyoshi as the Avatar until many years later, when the world was in complete chaos.

10. Even After His Death, He Still Sought Revenge

Kuruk continued to search for Ummi in the spirit realm much after he had died. He had vowed to kill Koh, and avenge Ummi; and he would later meet the spirit again reincarnated as Aang. However, Kuruk had long since realized that if he were to kill Koh as planned, then he would also lose Ummi forever. Because of this, he dropped his eternal vendetta, although he did still work to see if he could get the love of his life set free.

Avatar Yangchen: Everything Shadow Of Kyoshi Reveals

Avatar Yangchen was the Air Nomad Avatar  that succeeded Avatar Szeto and came before Avatar Kuruk. After she mastered all the four elements in her youth, she was quite eager to make a difference in the world, despite  the fact that she was inexperienced.

She would eventually become a respected figure and was hailed for her wisdom, determination, and power. Air Nomad culture placed a lot of emphasis on pacifism and the sanctity of life, but Yangchen was feared for being fierce and willing to do whatever it would take to keep the world peaceful and balanced in her duty as the bridge between two worlds.

Due to this, Avatar Yangchen’s time as Avatar ensured that the world was free of wars for an entire generation even after her death. After dying, she was seen as a holy individual and even the people in the Earth Kingdom would pray to her for protection. However, her actions had a side effect; contributing to a rise in dark spirit attacks during the time of her successor Avatar Kuruk.

The graphic novel Shadow Of Kyoshi reveals some unknown facts about Avatar Yangchen, which we will now discuss.

The History of Avatar Yangchen

Avatar Yangchen was born and raised by Air Nuns in the Western Air Temple. She performed her first act of waterbending on a small island in the Mo Ce Sea and, like all Avatars, mastered the elements and the Avatar State in order to maintain world peace.

Over time, she also became well learned and studied many different philosophies, including the writings of Gurus Laghima and Shoken. Avatar Yangchen was also well known for making pacts between humans and spirits, such as in the case of the Heartwalker of Yaoping Mountain, and the phoenix-eel spirits living under Ma’inka Island.

Avatar Yangchen died in 345 BG and was reincarnated as Kuruk of the Northern Water Tribe in accordance with the Avatar Cycle.

Aftermath of Avatar Yangchen’s Death

After her death, Avatar Yangchen became considered as a figure of holy reverence, particularly amongst the Air Nomads and the Earth Kingdom. People from these kingdoms, especially the Earth Kingdom, would pray to her to give them luck and protection. They constructed wayside shrines dedicated to her all through the Earth Kingdom. Avatar Yangchen received such devotion that even when people faced Avatar Kyoshi, they would be praying to Yangchen.

Her legacy as a compassionate person became legendary. In remembrance of how she handled the issue with General Old Iron, the Air Nomads made yearly pilgrimages to the statue of Lady Tienhai. They renamed the ritual as Yangchen’s Festival. Even the island where Avatar Yangchen had first practised waterbending became a holy site, that is until it was accidentally destroyed by Avatar Kuruk. As time went by, the Air Nomads eventually constructed two statues of Yangchen. One was located in the Eastern Air Temple and the other in the Western Air Temple.

Yangchen’s decisions when it came to politics also had long-lasting impacts. Her time as the Avatar brought a prolonged period of peace, as no threats of war occurred for an entire generation after her death. Scholars also analyzed her decisions, and they wrote treatises on this subject. All of these were studied by the earthbender Yun, who was thought to be the next in line after Kuruk.

Avatar Yangchen and Aang

When Aang needed advice from his past lives on how to handle Firelord Ozai,  each avatar he met encouraged him to choose the path of violence. He surmised that Avatars Roku, Kyoshi, and Kuruk could not understand his pacifist stance, as they believed it would affect his restoring of balance in the world. Hence, Aang sought out Avatar Yangchen, believing that as a fellow air nomad, She would understand.

Avatar Yangchen did understand Aang’s hesitation, but her advice was not exactly what Aang wanted to hear. She said “Selfless duty calls you to sacrifice your own spiritual needs and do whatever it takes to protect the world”. To Aang’s understanding that meant that Avatar Yangchen’s role as the Avatar took precedence over her Air Nomad ways.  Here, we can see what Avatar Yangchen’s character is truly like. It is clear she is far more violent than anyone thinks her to be.

Avatar Yangchen In ‘The Rift’

Yangchen had a firm hand on the world’s politics, and in the tie-in comic “The Rift”, we can see how it affected her successor, Kuruk. There was an era of peace and much of this can be attributed to her direct and powerful intervention as well as her diplomacy. In her confrontation with the dark spirit General Old Iron, who believed that humans did not consider the spirits and their land with reverence or sanctity, Avatar Yangchen entered the Avatar State, and leveled the surrounding city. After tensions had cooled off,  Avatar Yangchen struck a deal with the spirit, agreeing to start a ritual in honor of Old Iron and that would serve as a testament to humanity’s goodwill.

Those same qualities of brokering deals and diplomacy with spirits were the background for Yangchen’s character in the novel, Shadow of Kyoshi.

Avatar Yangchen In ‘Shadow of Kyoshi’

In the previous novel ‘Rise of Kyoshi’, we do not see very many details about Avatar Yangchen. She is established as a revered figure, and her era of prosperity made her an idol to Kyoshi herself. Kyoshi sought to speak to her, but it wasn’t until she could hone the spiritual connection to her past lives that she could speak with Yangchen personally.

Kyoshi had such a hard time making this connection, owing to the fact that she was still very cross with Kuruk and how he left the world. It blocked her from connecting with him and the rest of the past Avatars. Eventually, she came to terms with Kuruk, after she learnt of his secret missions hunting bad spirits.  However, she learnt of the real reason but it was not until Kyoshi spoke with Yangchen that she learned the reason evil spirits were invading in the first place; Avatar Yangchen.

While Avatar Yangchen was a powerful Avatar and an even greater diplomat, it turns out that she had regrets. In her admonition to Kyoshi, she reveals that she spoiled the Four Nations of humanity,  providing them with everything that they wanted, at the expense of the spirits. Even her broker with General Old Iron may have come a little too late, because her indulging humanity  caused them to mine the world for its resources greedily while paying little homage to the spirits themselves.

Conclusion

The Avatar series and comics have always been crafty with how it weaves its complex characterizations, giving us in depth looks on various characters. This exposure on  Avatar Yangchen reveals a side to one of the most revered Avatars of all time. It is further proof that the Avatar really is just human, and that each Avatar has as many flaws as they do strengths. The novel, ‘The Shadow of Kyoshi’ continues a great trend of fleshing out Avatar’s many characters, and we love to see where exactly the next story takes us.

Avatar The Last Airbender Map: Understanding Their World

Team Avatar certainly did a lot of travelling in their day, and this applies to both incarnations of the Team as seen in The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. With the world very vast and hazardous, surely they must have had something to use as a guide. And rightfully so, they did. Right up there is the Avatar The Last Airbender map.

But this map isn’t just a guide through Aang’s world. It also shows the world he created after the Hundred Year War, as well as various key monuments and locations where important events took place.

Our version of the map is numbered, but not to worry, it’s to help you pinpoint where is where, and what exactly is what. The known lands in the world are shown here. The specific locations of certain landmarks are marked down as well. Each marking is represented by something. You can find out what is used to mark a location in the map legend below as follows.

Avatar The Last Airbender Map Legend

The legend for the Avatar the Last Airbender map are as follows;

  • The zoomed-in square holding numbers 62 to 69 marks the different locations in Republic City.
  • The blue circles represent the locations that the original Team Avatar visited in their journeys in the Winter of 99 AG
  • The green circles represent all the locations that the original Team Avatar visited during the Spring of 100 AG.
  • The red circles are the locations that the original Team Avatar visited in their journeys in the Summer of 100 AG
  • The gold circles are a representation of the locations that Korra visits in 170 AG.

Locations On The Avatar The Last Airbender Map

The entire series and the events that transpired therein took place in the numbered locations on the map. Each of the numbers represents a particular place on the Avatar The Last Airbender Map. You can match the number to the location below.

Show Love and Respect to Appa

When you see the map of the world you quickly understand how much Team Avatar had to travel. A lot of the show would not have been possible or as exciting without Appa because they would not have been able to get all over the world so quickly.

Appa really carried the team on his back. There are some episodes where they have to travel from the Fire Nation to the western air temple. They also had to to go from the Earth Kingdom to the Fire Nation which is no small distance. All of these world travels are due to the Appa.

The Earth Kingdom is Massive

The Earth Kingdom is similar to Africa. It does not get enough respect for the size it is. On the flip side of this, you would think that the Fire Nation was this massive set of land but it really was not. It also explains why they were so hungry to expand and take over the Earth Kingdom.

People always want to have the most land to represent the most power. The Fire Nation was not as most would think. In our world Africa is the largest continent by far but many will make it look smaller than it is in order to make more powerful countries look bigger.

Team Avatar: The Members and How It Formed

The Team Avatar is a legendary team that started with Sokka, Aang, and Katara, and of course, Appa. The Team grew as the quest and their needs grew.

Team Avatar is the name used to refer to Avatar Aang and his companions. They put together this Team on Aang’s journey to master all four elements and defeat the Fire Lord. Balance was much needed during and after the 100-year war. Aang and his friends started out to restore the balance that the fire nation had upset but wiping out the Air Nation (Nomads), taking Earth nation territory, and waging war on the Water tribe.

Team Avatar consisted of Aang, Sokka, Katara, and Appah but was later joined by Toph, Suki, Zuko, and Momo. The latter members all became equally important as the first set of people in the Team.

The Team’s constituency varied a little bit all through Aang’s journey across the world. This was until the invasion of the Fire Nation when a much larger number of people began to join and leave the group.

By the end of the war, the group was known to have had at least a bending master of all four bending arts. They had at least one member from each of the four nations, which inadvertently spoke balance itself. If they were to bring balance to the world, they had to have balance themselves. The Guru Patik once told Aang when he was trying to open all seven chakras to freely go in and out of the Avatar State.

The balance and mastery of the elements by its individual members made Team Avatar a formidable fighting group. One that was even capable of assaulting even the Earth Kingdom Royal Palace, which they did without much stress or destroying an airship fleet without any outside assistance.

Origin Of Team Avatar

The name of the group Team Avatar was originated by Sokka, who was inspired by a group of elite Earth benders. They were introduced into the scene as the Terra Team. He was inspired by their catchy name and wanted one for Team Avatar as well. He first suggested a few other names. He suggested the “Boomeraang Squad,” a clear merger of “boomerang” and “Aang”; the “Aang Gang”; and the “Fearsome Foursome” before settling on Team Avatar.

Even after he had created the name, Katara would not have it as she told him it would not catch on.

Formation Of The Team

During the Hundred Year War, started by Fire Lord Sozin in 0 AG. AG is is an Avatar timeline representational reference used to refer to before and after the genocide of the Air Nation. AG is After Genocide. BG is Before Genocide.

Sozin used the comet to wipe out the Air Nomads, hoping to kill the Avatar in the process and begin the war. A move, ensuring that no one could stand in his way. He did this so there would be no chance. Not even the infant Avatar could stand against him. It is used to pinpoint and make this reference. He wiped the air nation and then began waging war on the other two great nations.

Pre this genocide of the Air Nomads; Avatar Aang fled the Southern Air Temple shortly before the Air Nomad Genocide occurred.

After being caught in a storm, Aang went into the Avatar State and encased himself in an iceberg. This was a self-imprisonment that lasted for a hundred years.

Eventually, Katara and Sokka discovered the iceberg, and Katara unintentionally used waterbending to release him. A blinding ray of light suddenly shot out from the encased shell, and the two siblings met Aang for the first time. This was the first meeting of the Team Avatar.

They later discovered that the young boy was indeed the Avatar. After he gave himself up to save their village, they went after him and tried to save him from the Fire Nation. After the debacle, they decided to accompany him on his journey to the Northern Water Tribe, where he would master waterbending.

Team Avatar’s First Journey

During their first long journey, Team Avatar met with a lot of people. These people became friends, allies, and trusted backup. People like Suki, a Kyoshi warrior who led a group of elite warriors with a unique fighting style. They were named in honor of the Avatar Kyoshi.

Haru, who Team Avatar helped free their town from the clutches of the fire nation. He was in a town where Earth bending was forbidden, but Aang, Sokka, and Katara helped change that by driving out the fire nation.

The Freedom Fighters, Teo, escaped Zuko a few times on this journey and Zhao. They also visited the Northern and Southern Air Temples. When they visited the Southern Air Temple, they found a winged lemur whom Aang decided to adopt as his pet, naming him Momo.

Team Avatar subsequently took a route up the western Earth Kingdom, meeting many people and visiting several villages. Upon arrival at the Northern Water Tribe, Aang began training with Master Pakku and was later accompanied by Katara.

Recruiting Toph Beifong to Team Avatar

The Team journeyed to Omashu with hopes of having Bumi be Aang’s earth-bending teacher.

When they arrived, they discovered Omashu had been captured by the Fire Nation and renamed New Ozai. When Aang and his friends asked Bumi’s advisors that they found in hiding what had happened, they said King Bumi surrendered before they could do anything.

The Team quickly launched into action and rescued Bumi. He was the one who later advised Aang to search for someone who waits and listens before striking. He explained that he was practicing and honing his Neutral Jin. A jin was employed to minimize causalities. This Jin involved not doing anything but waiting till it was right to strike.

Eventually, traveling to the city of Gaoling, they met Toph Beifong, a powerful blind girl, who joined them in an effort to leave her overprotective parents and save the world. This was not without much drama in itself, but the Team successfully added one more member, growing stronger than before.

Aang began learning earthbending under Toph and continued practicing waterbending with Katara as his master. The Team decided to take vacations leisurely until they arrived at a secret library in the Si Wong Desert. When Toph asked when she would get her own vacation, Sokka casually said, “You have to work here a little longer to qualify.”

In the spirit library, they learned of a solar eclipse that would render all firebenders powerless.

The group decided to bring this information to the Earth King before discovering Appa had been captured. They eventually crossed the Serpent’s Pass, where they reunited with Suki and arrived at their destination: the Earth Kingdom capital, Ba Sing Se.

Getting Appah back was no easy task but with the help of Zuko, even though they didn’t realize it at that time.

Recruiting Zuko to Team Avatar

This was a particularly tricky one for Team Avatar as they had long since their inception all known Zuko to be the hateful prince who would stop at nothing to kidnap the Avatar.

Zuko, after realizing who he is, decided to join Team Avatar.

After the failed invasion of the Fire Nation, Team Avatar and the other younger participants of the invasion, like Haru, Teo, and The Duke, journeyed to the Western Air Temple.

Zuko followed them, resolute on joining them, and helped them take down his father. He attempted to explain to the group that he was better now, but it was only after he saved them from the mind fire bender did they take him in. Sokka named him Combustion Man. It was only when Zuko made a statement, saying, “Fire can be dangerous in the wild and so is a fire bender” did Aang understand that he was meant to be his teacher. Aang understood what it meant to hurt his friends with fire, and Zuko did too, having suffered at the hands of his father.

Zuko joined the Team even with the disgruntled voices of the other members of Team Avatar.

They banded together and efficiently took down Zuko’s father, Fire Lord Ozai.

Team Avatar still stands to be one of the greatest teams ever. When you watch the final episode of Avatar, you see how the team had to work together. Zuko and Katara went to get the Fire Lord title back, Iroh went for the Earth Kingdom, Aang took care of the Fire Lord, and everyone else was dealing with the airships.

Everything they did required teamwork. They needed different bending forms and nonbenders to get the job done and bring peace and balance back to the world.

The Boulder (Avatar): Character Designed After The Rock

Designing characters after real life people and celebrities is not a new thing. Matter of fact, it is done a lot of times. The Avatar: The Last Airbender series had a host of supporting characters that aided the plot of the show, and while many of them had different designs, one of them is actually designed after pro wrestler and actor Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock. Which character is this? It’s the Boulder Avatar.

The Boulder Avatar In The Last Airbender

The Boulder Avatar was one of the series’ most memorable characters of the supporting cast.  He was an iconic earthbending wrestler but what most people may not know is that he was originally designed with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in mind.

As we all know, the show Avatar: The Last Airbender chronicles the adventures that Aang and his friends Katara and Sokka encounter as he attempts to master the bending of all four elements. He is doing this so that he can defeat the evil Fire Lord Ozai, restoring peace and balance to their war-torn world. Aang eventually finds an earthbending master, by the name of Toph Beifong, an earthbending prodigy who happens to be blind but uses earthbending to see. They meet her while she is wrestling The Boulder Avatar under the wrestling name ‘The Blind Bandit’ at an underground earthbending competition.

The Boulder Avatar: First Appearance

We meet The Boulder Avatar in the season 2 episode 6 titled “The Blind Bandit” of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The Boulder Avatar is shown to be an extremely strong and muscular person and he looks like the kind of guy you would want to teach you Earthbending. And that’s the same thought that Team Avatar has when they see him; attracting the team as a potential earthbending master for Aang. We see him quite expertly dispatch his opponent, The Hippo in the Earth Rumble underground tournament.

The Boulder refers to himself exclusively in the third person, which is an interesting character trait. He entertains and wows the crowd with his increasingly extravagant wrestling moves and showboating. It is clear he is a fan favorite to win the competition, that is until he is humiliatingly defeated by The Blind Bandit aka Toph Beifong who eventually ends up becoming Aang’s earthbending teacher. As it so turns out, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is the real-life inspiration for The Boulder Avatar.

How Can We Confirm The Connection With The Rock?

Avatar Extras was a Nickelodeon event in which episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender were aired with accompanying pop up bubbles. These bubbles were pop-up bubbles with trivia in them, and when one of them appeared on the scream, it confirmed that The Rock was indeed the inspiration for The Boulder Avatar.

In addition, the production team of The Last Airbender even wanted the actor to voice the character on the show. The Boulder Avatar does bear a lot of similarities to The Rock. Some of these similarities include his massive and very muscular build, but perhaps the most striking quality has to be his wrestling persona.

They are extremely similar in that aspect. Just like The Rock is with his catchphrases and his persona in the ring, the Boulder is a very charismatic, boastful trash-talker, who prefers to refer himself in the third person much to the amusement of the audience.

Who Voiced The Boulder Avatar

The Boulder Avatar was eventually not voiced by The Rock but instead by Dwayne Johnson’s real-life friend, pro-wrestler Mick Foley. The team had indeed wanted Dwayne Johnson as the first choice to voice The Boulder Avatar but he wasn’t yet much of an established actor as at the time of production.

He was only just making a name for himself as a big movie earner when The Last Airbender was first airing in 2005. No doubt, a cameo role in Avatar: The Last Airbender would have been something of a major departure for the wrestler turned actor, but you can’t resist Dwayne Johnson’s influence on The Boulder.

One thing for sure is that The Boulder was an instantly iconic character on the Avatar: The Last Airbender show. There were several other characters in the supporting cast, but none hit it quite like this one did. From his repetitious assertions on how The Boulder was feeling to how The Boulder had a striking muscular build, it is no doubt that The Rock-inspired character made the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe a very colorful, vibrant and very macho one.

The Boulder Was Featured in One of The Best Episodes of Avatar Ever Made

The Blind Bandit was easily one of the coolest episodes of Avatar ever made. The first episode introduced the slow-motion bending that showed off how Toph would listen and then react. She would wait for fighters to make their move. The episode also introduced Toph, who ended up being a fan favorite. She added so much flavor to the show and the group.

One of the best things about the episode was the scene when tough face all of the guys at once. The level of earth bending we got to see in this episode was just amazing. Up until this point, the focus had been on water bending, fire bending, and even air bending. There had not been very much earthbending displayed in the first book.

I think a lot of people were fans of the show through season one but the episode with the Boulder locked people in as fans. It was this episode that let people know they would love this show for a long time.

Avatar Cycle: A Definitive Guide To The Order of The Avatar

The Avatar cycle is a cycle based on the four seasons and the passage of these seasons. It coincides with the order that the first Avatar; Avatar Wan first mastered the elements. It goes thus; fire (representing summer), air representing autumn, water representing winter, and earth standing for spring.

How The Avatar Cycle Works

When the current Avatar dies, a new Avatar will be born, usually into the next nation in the Avatar Cycle. For example, Avatar Yangchen was an Air Nomad, died and was reincarnated as Avatar Kuruk from the Northern Water Tribe. Avatar Kyoshi was next, hailing from the Earth Kingdom and then there was Avatar Roku, a Fire Nation indigene.

The Avatar Cycle also determines the order in which each Avatar is supposed to learn the four bending disciplines.

How The Avatar Cycle Determines the Order In Which Elements Are Learnt

The nation where the Avatar comes from is obviously the first element that they will master, prior to the bender being identified as the Avatar. For instance, an Avatar born into the Water Tribe will learn to master waterbending first, before taking on the next three bending elements in the cycle. In this case, it would be earthbending, firebending and finally airbending. This order is not set in stone however, as there have been  instances where an Avatar has learnt the elements out of order.

Kyoshi’s Avatar Cycle

Having begun with mastering the earth element, Kyoshi started learning firebending with her friend slash bodyguard Rangi. At the same time, she was learning how to bend water from another friend Kirima. However, in a bid to keep the order snake, Rangi made Kyoshi bend a little breeze so she could have a bit of airbending mastery before she would begin waterbending.

Aang’s Avatar Cycle

Aang was in a similar situation. As the Avatar, he tried to learn fire under the mentorship of Jeong Jeong, as his second element. Jeong Jeong initially objected to this, considering the avatar cycle of the elements would have been disrupted.  Aang eventually learnt to create fire, but things didn’t go as planned, as he lacked the spiritual maturity to handle firebending.   After Jeong Jeong’s camp was attacked by Zhao, Aang’s firebending training ended. Later in the series, we see him learn the element under Zuko; but only after he had mastered the other elements in the proper sequence

Korra’s Avatar Cycle

Korra had a similar fate as the aforementioned Avatars before her. At a young age of four, she was already able to bend water, earth and fire to some extent. Despite this skill, Korra was discouraged from continuing her bending of the other elements until she had been able to master her native element; waterbending.

Difficulty of Learning Elements Within the Avatar Cycle

Each Avatar has a peculiar difficulty mastering a particular element during training. They often have a low affinity for that element based on their individual personality. This element can be difficult to learn, sometimes proving impossible to control until faced with a situation in which the Avatar is forced to reach within and manifest power.

It’s been found that the bending discipline an Avatar finds it hard to learn is the element that is in direct opposition to the Avatar’s birth nation. Avatar Roku for example, found waterbending to be rather difficult. For Avatar Aang, earthbending was his biggest problem. This was due to the fact his personality centered on evading problems or not engaging in fights as much as possible.

For Korra, however, the case was slightly different. Korra loved firebending, despite the fact that she was  anative waterbender. Her most difficult element was instead air; and she found airbending the most challenging. This was attributed to the fact that she was brash and direct person – a sharp contrast to the airbending philosophy of contemplation, measured action, and avoidance of conflict.

Now let’s take a look at the Avatar Cycle and how it affected every Avatar

How Each Avatar Cycle Influenced The Next Avatar In Line

One interesting thing about the Avatar cycle is that the accomplishments of one Avatar only create some interesting conflict for their successor.

Avatar: The Last Airbender was full of recurring themes. But one of the most interesting ones was the cycle of change; which we saw embodied in the Avatar cycle. Beyond their ability to master the four elements, the Avatar serves as a balancing force for the spirit and human worlds.

The goal is to keep the four nations in harmony. Now, although all Avatars in the 10000 years of their existence are linked in knowledge and experience in the Avatar state, each reincarnation seems to have world issues to deal with that are a direct result of the strength and failures of their predecessor.  Every generation has its own new conflict, and with each new conflict brings about a redefinition of the Avatar’s role.

Let’s take a look at how this has happened with the known Avatars.

How The Avatar Cycle Affected Each Avatar

Yangchen

For Avatar Yangchen, the stakes were rather difficult for her. Her conflicts put her spiritual upbringing in great contrast with her duty as the Avatar. Eventually, she put the world’s needs ahead of her spiritual teachings. The result was that she achieved long-term peace for humanity. But it came at the great cost of alienating the spirits, a fact that bled right into Avatar Kuruk’s tenure.

Kuruk

Kuruk’s case was the exact opposite of Yangchen’s conflicts, possibly a byproduct of her way of handling things. While he leaves humanity much to its own devices, he is more involved with dealing with  the proliferation of dark spirits. Of course, this has dire consequences, such as his fiance Ummi being taken by the malevolent spirit, Koh the Face Stealer. He would spend the rest of his life seeking to bring her back but would only end up dying at a very young age. He left behind a lot of conflicts between the human races; something that spilled into Kyoshi’s time.

Kyoshi

The militaristic conflicts that formed in the absence of Kuruk thanks to his untimely death would create a world that was nigh chaotic. To rise to the occasion, Kyoshi approaches matters as the Avatar in a manner you could describe as a hardline perception of forceful justice. She was a very brute-ish Avatar, enforcing balance to the world’s conflict. This would in turn create an adverse approach for her successor, Roku.

Roku

Kyoshi’s no child’s play approach in turn influenced Roku in great contrast. As her successor, he seemed to possess a commitment to moderation and mercy. When he handled the world’s problems, he wasn’t particularly soft, but he gave leniency where he deemed it fit.

Aang

When he wakes up from his hundred year long slumber in the iceberg, Aang sees that the world is very different from the one he left behind.

The world has been thrown completely out of balance by the Fire Nation’s totalitarianism. His people have faced genocide and have completely wiped out. The other nations are also being largely subdued. His mission is pretty clear, with him having to master the remaining elements, taking on the Fire Lord and ending the war. But there’s more. For Aang there is the emotional trauma he faces. This is because he recognizes it is his absence as the Avatar that has led to the state of things.

The interesting thing about this realization is the fact that this failure is something that extends to his past life. With Avatar Roku, there is a huge case of failure, as his long time friendship and near brotherhood with Fire Lord Sozin blinds him from being more decisive when the latter expresses the desire for world conquest. He did not take the necessary actions, and he could have ended the war before it could have begun.

Korra

Aang’s accomplishments might have been lauded by fans and the show’s characters altogether, but they were not without faults. In fact, just like his predecessors before him, he seemed to have created the same cycle of change for his successor in the Avatar cycle.

Aang was able to not only unite the four nations so that they effectively co existed with one another, but he also established  the United Republic of Nations. This new republic offers a haven for benders and non-benders. It also boasts of mass industrialization and technological advancements. It was definitely the utopia Aang would have wanted it to be.

And yet it still had its own problems. Surprisingly, many of them came from the systems Aang and Team Avatar put in place. First things first, Republic City’s bureaucracy was grossly incompetent. The bender inhabitants are obviously recipients to some form of favoritism, creating a divide between classes.

With the older forms of governance like the Earth Kingdom monarchy, there seemed to be more interest in preserving the rule of power than there was in actually helping the people. Where his predecessors have failed in some aspects, Aang’s world was also flawed. It refused to have balance.

Haru (Avatar): All You Need To Know About The Character

Haru (Avatar) was one of the secondary characters of the Avatar The Last Airbender series. He was a skilled teenage earthbender whose Earth Kingdom village was temporarily occupied by the Fire Nation during the final years of the Hundred Year War. He was one of the very first allies that Team Avatar made in their course to teach Aang the elements.

After he breaks his father out of a Fire Nation prison rig along with other earthbenders, Haru Avatar joins forces with Hakoda; Katara and Sokka’s father. He helps out to invade the Fire Nation on the day of the solar eclipse. They lost that fight, so he escaped with the rest of Team Avatar on Appa.

They take refuge at the Western Air Temple. When the temple is attacked by Azula, Haru Avatar escapes with Hakoda and some other friends. After the war ended, he was present for Fire Lord Zuko’s coronation.

Early Life Of Haru Avatar

Haru Avatar was born to Tyro, his father and his mother who was unnamed throughout the series. His father taught him earthbending. When the Fire Nation attacked their village in the year 94 AG, Tyro and the other earthbenders fought off the invasion. But they were outnumbered and eventually taken away.

Haru Avatar grew up alone with his mother. To make sure he would not be taken, Haru’s mother stopped him from earthbending. This halted the development of his bending.

He however continued to practice in secret, as it made him feel closer to his father.

Haru Avatar In The Episode ‘Imprisoned’

During the season of late fall in 99 AG, Haru Avatar was practising his earthbending alone. Then, Team Avatar stumbled upon him. They all got to know each other better. Eventually, Haru and Katara would bond over their shared experiences; something that has made a section of the fanbase ship them together.

While they bonded, they came across a villager trapped under a rock slide. Using his earthbending, Haru Avatar saved him, but he was ultimately betrayed by the villager. He reported him to the Fire Nation soldiers who came to arrest Haru, just as his mother had feared.

Aang and Sokka staged Katara earthbending so she would also be arrested and taken to the shipyard as well. Whilst there, she teamed up with Haru to start a mass prison rebellion and escape. Now that Haru Avatar was reunited with his father, as well as the strength of the escaped earth benders, the villagers had a chance to drive the Fire Nation away from their home.

They hatched a series of plans together, and now fully reunited, Haru Avatar and his father helped to liberate their village from Fire Nation control as a part of the Earth Kingdom rebellions. They would go on to provide vital support for the Earth Kingdom in the war against the Fire Nation, as well as Team Avatar in the final days of the war.

Day of the Black Sun

Haru Avatar is now sporting a mustache and a goatee, was one of many familiar but noticeably distinct faces recruited by Sokka to help in the invasion of the Fire Nation on the Day of Black Sun. Haru and his father were members of the ground forces to attack the Fire Nation Capital.

When the submarines were destroyed, the warriors decided to surrender but Haru promised Tyro that they would return to rescue them. The young people, namely Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Teo, The Duke, and Haru, escaped on Appa and travelled to the Western Air Temple.

At the abandoned temple, Haru becomes friends with Teo and Duke, and together they begin to explore the Temple. They found out that it was the perfect place for Haru to practice his earthbending, as well as a nice place to hangout.

Their stay at the temple was marked with a number of activities, such as spectating in a sword bending match and practicing their bending. They also joined Sokka’s “Bendless Boomerang Club”, when he made the decision to open it up to everyone.

Azula Attacks Haru Avatar and His Friends

Haru was with Team Avatar until they were attacked by Azula and her air fleet. He fled with Hakoda and his friends, while Aang and the primary team escaped on Appa. They would later reunite during Zuko’s coronation; much after the Hundred Year War had ended. He was also finally with his father again.

Haru Avatar’s Abilities

Haru was shown to be a skilled earthbender. Even with the most minimal training, he was able to manipulate large boulders and was able to stop debris from crushing the villager. His bending style was much different from that of most earth benders. He preferred earthbending with his hands unlike most earthbenders, who preferred to earthbend with their feet.

Along with four other earthbenders, which included his father, Haru Avatar was able to create a shield that was strong enough to withstand combined blasts from numerous firebenders. With help from his father, he was able to compress large amounts of coal, and turn them into a single projectile. This is by no means an easy feat to accomplish.

The Avatar State & Everything You Need to Know About It

We all know that the Avatar state is considered a power-up for Avatars as they gain immeasurable power. You definitely do not want to be close to Aang when he slips into the Avatar state in his early days. Well, there was a time that no one had access to such powers.

The giant turtles were the protectors of the world, so they allowed people to build cities on their backs. When people ventured into the spirit world, the giant turtles would bestow them with powers to navigate through the spirit wilds and protect themselves. Dependent on the kind of turtle they encountered, they were bestowed with the power to bend certain elements. These powers were collected when they get back into the physical realm.

However, something drastic occurred that caused them to turn to sieve their interaction with the human populace; the emergence of the Avatar. Once they turned their backs on the human world, the people scattered and formed the four nations.

Wan, the first Avatar, fixed up the rift between the physical and the spiritual realm after Wan permanently bonded with Raava, the Spirit of Light and Peace. Thence, the giant turtles stopped their interaction with the human world, leaving the responsibility of maintaining balance in the world to the Avatar.

Understanding the Avatar State

In order to understand a few things about the Avatar state, we have to go to the 2nd book in the Last Airbender series. In the first episode, after the team defeated Prince Zuko, they all venture to the Earth kingdom so Aang could begin to learn earth bending.

However, the meet up with General Fong, who was all too happy to meet with the team. He talked to Aang and offered a solution to end the 100-year war induced by the Fire Nation. His plan was for Aang to get into the Avatar state and face the Firelord. Aang informs Fong that he could only go into the Avatar state at will. The few times he had gone into the Avatar state were triggered by certain emotions. Fong would not be deterred as he promised that he would help Aang find the key to triggering the Avatar State. Sokka was cool with it, but not Katara.

After series of trials and a nightmare, Aang decides that it was wrong to toy with the Avatar state. He told this to Fong, who in turn sends a series of earth bending attacks towards Aang to induce him into the Avatar State. However, Katara gets in the crossfire as Fong captures her and uses the earth bending technique to make her sink into the ground. Aang begs for her life, but Fong is adamant, telling Aang to go into the Avatar State. Katara ends up fully immersed, and Aang goes into the Avatar state, thinking Katara had been killed.

The Misuse of Power

Fong is initially delighted until he experiences the devastating power of the Avatar State. He brings out Katara. Telling Aang that it was just a ploy and Katara was safe. But Aang is far gone and could no longer listen to anyone, leaving destruction in his wake.

During this devastation, Aang is transported into the Spirit realm, where he sees Avatar Roku. Roku tells Aang that the Avatar State is simply a defense mechanism that gives the current Avatar the skills and knowledge of all the previous Avatars. He warns Aang, however, that as powerful as the Avatar state was, it had a weakness. If the Avatar is killed in the Avatar State, the Avatar will cease to exist. He later comes to and regains control of himself.

As the series went on, even spilling over to the Legend of Korra, we began to discover a few other things about the Avatar state. Some of which are:

If An Avatar dies In The Avatar State, The Avatar Cycle ends, But Raava will remain alive.
As earlier stated, Roku revealed that the Avatar cycle would cease to exist in the current incarnation is killed in the Avatar State. However, that does not mean that the spirit responsible for the Avatar’s powers would cease to exist.

Viewers assumed that the Avatar spirit would end up dying as well. But that is not the case. In the Legend of Korra, Raava was forcibly removed from Korra’s body by Unalaq, who was possessed by Vaatu, the dark spirit of Chaos. She was killed soon afterward, but we find that she was immediately reborn from a residual light found in Vaatu.

This means that the Avatar Spirit would not have died when Azula shot Aang down in Ba Sing Se. The Avatar Cycle would have just simply ended, and Raava would have ended up being reborn with the then trapped Vaatu in the Tree of Time.

Aang Stayed In The Avatar State For Hundred Years

Being told you are the Avatar can be a daunting thing to face, especially if you are just a kid. The pressure got to Aang when he got to know that he was the Avatar, causing him to run away with Appa. When he encountered a storm that could possibly take his life, the Avatar state kicked in.

He ended up freezing Appa and himself in a block of giant spherical ice for a hundred years. Most would remember this scene but would definitely have forgotten that his tattoos were still glowing while in the ice. Being in this state for so long was perhaps what caused him to die at the age of 66, which is quite early for any Avatar as it would have taken a toll on his body.

Avatars access the skills of previous incarnations they haven’t learned before in the Avatar state.
As we all know, the Avatar state enables the Avatar to access the powers and knowledge of the past Avatars, causing them to have immense strength and technique they do not possess ordinarily.

An obvious example was when Aang used water bending on Zuko in the Avatar state when he had not even had not learned any water bending yet.

Avatars have the ability to Channel A Specific Past Life via the Avatar State.
It is possible to use the avatar state to channel a specific past life, becoming that person for a specific period. This was obvious in the “Winter Solstice, Part 2: Avatar Roku” episode, as he accessed Roku and gave him control so as to get Aang and his friends out of a bind with his fire-bending prowess. The enemies, who were of the priests of the Fire nation Avatar temple, recognized Avatar Roku as he rampaged on them.

Only the Avatar State Can Trump Psychic Bloodbending

This technique is up there as one of the darkest and strongest techniques in Avatar. Amon and Yakone were even able Bloodbend with their minds surpassing Katara and Hama, the progenitor of the technique.

Korra saw how Aang dispelled the technique in a flashback by using a short burst of the Avatar state. Even its users did not have a defense mechanism against it when the tables are turned, as Katara used it on Hama.

Zuko and Mai: Things That Made No Sense About Them

Zuko and Mai were hands down one of the major couples or pairings in the Avatar mythos. They already were in a relationship long before the show started, and by the time we see their pairing, it is pretty established that they are in a relationship.

It was a pretty solid ship and had its own section of fans rooting for it. No matter the hurdles they faced, the Zai/Muko fans always wanted their faves to keep going on forever. And who can blame them? Zuko and Mai’s relationship was one of the most mature relationships in the series, filled with all that teenage angst, emotion, and good stuff.

But while there was a lot of love for our resident Hothead and Emo/Goth Girl, there were so many things fundamentally wrong with that relationship as well. Their interactions with one another were a sight to see (a major highlight of the excellent general character development on Avatar: The Last Airbender); but their blowouts were astronomical.

This pretty much just shows that as nice as they were together, they also did not make that much sense together. It’s probably why the creators had them break up in the tie-in comics, but we don’t know for sure if they stayed that way.

Here are things that did not make any sense about Zuko and Mai’s relationship.

Zuko and Mai Didn’t Seem To Have Much In Common

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is ay1zVUomukfO29q_o_-0rpqyBqn6_H4yjSctgMeje2hHiQlD6fPiPFmEVUMm_M1pbRfOrb6frh_cCsCRM0O7E-_93dwzDv6JnPe3y5sEFT48g1b7D0-3hbuNZgI380_798wuJc5R

It’s obvious that Zuko and Mai cared a great deal about each other. However, it’s also kind of clear that they do not have much in common when it comes to similarities. The strange thin is that this is a common problem with tv shows and movies; as they usually do not have time to fully focus on relationships and show the basic details. The one time we see them share something that they both enjoy is the scene where they have a picnic. But even that does not prove much. It’s hard to tell if they do or do not have things in common with each other.

Mai Seemed to Be Much of A Loner

One thing is clear about Mai’s character: she preferred to be alone.

Sure, she may have been really close friends with Azula and Ty Lee, but mostly, she appeared to be someone who enjoyed her own company more. People seemed to annoy her easily. Even at the point where she tells Zuko he is one of the few things (or people) she didn’t hate, there is the chance that she may have been happier without the stress of having to deal with the problems of a romantic relationship.

Not everyone is meant to be in this kind of relationship or is made for such. With this, it started to seem like a stretch that Zuko and Mai were in a relationship.

Zuko and Mai Had Incompatible Personalities

Let’s be honest. Zuko and Mai were polar opposites. Zuko is a person directly fueled by his passions and emotions, and Mai is a rather subdued and emotionless individual. It even affects how she reacts to things; in the sense that she doesn’t even react to things.

Sure, they say opposites attract, and it might look like their being nothing alike in temperaments might be perfect for them to balance each other out. But that also means that there is a more likely chance that they get on each other’s nerves. Which they do. A LOT. The episode on the beach at Ember Island is a perfect example of their explosive pairing. Zuko on one hand gets tired of the fact that she never shows any emotion, and Mai is fed up with Zuko’s being overly dramatic.

They Are Like  A High School Couple

They say there is no love like high school love. It’s also generally believed that high school love is young and dumb, and can’t last long. And that is exactly how Zuko and Mai feel as a couple.

They definitely have that endearing couple thing going on for them in some ways. Mai is an emo type of person and Zuko is dramatic and emo in his own way. However, it is this fact that makes their relationship seem like a coupling that is only fit for exuberant youth. It definitely does not feel like it can stand the test of time.

Just imagine seeing Zuko and Mai together forever, tying the knot, and starting their own family. It would scream catastrophic. Hence, it was only natural that the creators split them up in the follow-up comics to the series. However, there is still a huge chance that they got back together, as we never really get any confirmation as to who the mother of  Zuko’s daughter, Izumo is.

Why Mai Went Along With Azula’s Plans for Such A Long Time

This one beats everybody. Okay, so we get the fact that they have been good friends for a long time. But for what it’s worth, Mai isn’t nearly as chaotically evil as Azula is, so why she stuck around to help her for so long is a huge mystery.

Her stance on the war may have been influenced by the heavy level of propaganda that the Fire Nation was giving its people, and there is the fact that Mai’s parents were top-level government as well. But this does not explain why Mai put up with Azula and her schemes, even where it was clear that she can’t stand the princess. She still went along loyally. Maybe this had something to do with extending her loyalty to Zuko to his sister.

Zuko and Mai Could Have Had Better Matches

There are other people who would have made better matches for Zuko or Mai in the Avatar series. While they are not really that bad of a couple, maybe they would have fared better off with different partners. However, it’s easy to see why they were constantly paired. Zuko and Mai have known each other since they were children, not to mention the fact that they provide some form of balance to themselves.

They actually share a lot of nice relationship moments in the series, but you get the feeling that the chemistry could have existed elsewhere. We’ve already seen some fans ship Zuko with Katara (sorry Aang fans), so we knew there was something budding perhaps. As for Mai, a character like Ty Lee would have been perfect for her, with all of that cheerful positivity meeting Mai’s negative outlook.

Why Zuko Was So Possessive of Mai

Zuko does come off as a possessive boyfriend in the Zuko and Mai ship, and it is really not surprising that he is. The problem is that why.

Their relationship is understandably broken due to Zuko’s exile, and it meant they were apart for longer than they were together. There obviously wasn’t enough time to create any sense of serious ownership; and yet we see Zuko get really mad that Mai is talking to other boys at the beach house party. It’s nothing short of dramatic at the very least; an overreaction if you will. It did show they had serious jealousy problems in their relationship though.

Why Didn’t Zuko Explain Why He Left Better In His Letter

When he leaves the Fire Nation and goes on to help Aang and the rest of the gang in the Book of Fire, Zuko writes a letter to Mai. However, the contents of that letter are rather surprising, as they do nothing by way of explaining why he is leaving. He does not even explain what he is going to do. We get it, you’re cryptic Prince Zuko – but it still made no sense why he took that approach.

Mai definitely deserved a better explanation on the state of things. He could have surely written more in his letter, explaining in detail. Better still, he should have just had a physical conversation with Mai, no matter how she would have taken the news. It’s one of the most puzzling things about Zuko and Mai’s relationship.

Zuko and Mai Never Tried to Find Each Other While He Was In Exile

You could argue that they were just teens and therefore it would have been difficult for Mai to seek out her boyfriend. But if Avatar: the Last Airbender is clear on something; it is that pre-teens, teens and teenagers rule the fictional world of the four nations.

It would have actually cost her nothing to seek him out and help him. If she really cared about him like she said she did, and if their relationship was so serious, then we expect her to have reached out to him since; and not just when a significant amount of time had passed.

She would have tried to find out how he was doing.

Zuko Never Really Asks Mai to Join Him

It’s only natural to want your significant other to join you on important quests, right? Well, surprisingly Zuko never does ask Mai, and you wonder why.

On the Boiling Rock, Zuko was surely done for. But luckily (for him and for their relationship), Mai intervened and saved his life, albeit at the betrayal of Azula. Before that though, we never see Zuko ask Mai for any help.

Maybe he just never thought she wanted to be part of the entire war. Even throughout the series, we never really can tell what feelings Mai has towards the war. She might have been morally grey about it all, and Zuko could have asked her; but he never does.

Suki (Avatar): 7 Reasons She’s The Most Underrated Female Character

The Avatar fandom has some clear favorites from the series run. Most of them are primary members of team Avatar; being Aang, Sokka, Katara, Toph, and even animal companions Appa, Momo, and Hawky. But there is a section of the fandom that considers favorites outside of the main A-team. As we all know, Team Avatar has many allies, and from this number come these favorites. One of such clear favorites in Avatar is Suki.

Who Is (Avatar) Suki’s Competition For Best Female Character?

Avatar Suki is considered to be the best female character outside of the main protagonist by some fan sections. This is for a number of reasons, and all of them, from careful consideration are valid arguments. Of course, there are other contenders, such as Ty Lee, who is loved for her silliness and quirky character (not to mention her chi blocking abilities). There is also Mai, the resident Avatar Goth chick, loved for her emotionless stare and shuriken throwing prowess. Some even go as far back as Princess Yue, the one who sacrificed herself and became the moon.

We’ve not even addressed two leading ladies of the main team; Katara and Toph. Both prolific benders and progenitors of sub bending skills in their own right, it’s easy to see why. With all of this competition, let’s take a look at why we think Avatar Suki should get the title of the best female in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

1. (Avatar) Suki Is An Upholder of History and Past Figures

This reason is hands down obvious from the very first moment we meet Suki. In her first appearance, she is introduced as the incumbent leader of the Kyoshi Warriors. Who are the Kyoshi Warriors you say? Glad you asked.

The Kyoshi Warriors are a group of female warriors who take after Avatar Kyoshi in protecting Kyoshi Island. They wear makeup resembling the late Avatar, and even dress like she does, in a bid to pay homage to what she stood for. Additionally, their weapon of choices are the iconic golden fans that Kyoshi used to employ in her battles. You could say the Kyoshi Warriors are the resident police force on Kyoshi Island.

As the leader of the present instalment of the Kyoshi Warriors, Avatar Suki honors history through her activities. Not only did she start her training at the tender age of 8, she quickly rose through the ranks to assume the top spot we see her occupying when we meet her.

Through Suki, the preservation of the Earth Kingdom’s past traditions is possible. She also makes sure that the Avatar’s legacy is kept intact, especially during the hundred years that he is missing. Avatar Suki also taught Sokka how to fight like the Kyoshi Warriors, and she eventually became the first of many teachers in the series, passing on a centuries’ old legacy of war fan martial arts techniques.

2. Suki Was A Friend In Need To Appa

Another redeeming quality of Suki is shown in Book Two of the series. IT is in the story arc where Aang loses Appa, and the flying bison undergoes a harrowing sequence of events. At the end of them all, he is disheveled and does not even trust humans anymore. Every scene is filled with tragedy for our favorite sky bison, and it is so painful to watch. It has been tagged as one of the most tragic stories of the Avatar series.

Despite how heartbreaking the episode is, there are a few scenes that offer Appa peace and respite, and chief amongst them is when he meets Suki and the rest of the Kyoshi Warriors. It is expected that they would help him, afterall, since he is a friend and ally, but the care and love that they gave Appa was extra. At the end of it all, he was looking like a new bison, but that’s not all. Avatar Suki even let Appa escape when Azula, Ty Lee and Mai attacked them.

3. Suki’s War Fan Skills Are Badass

Avatar Kyoshi was known as one of the fiercest benders to ever exist. This status even transcended the time she was alive, following her much beyond her grave. She accomplished some amazing feats, even if such feats were typical for someone like the Avatar. But one iconic feature she had were her war fans.

With her war fans, she could bend the elements and take out opponents with one swipe. But the physics behind the fans are easy when you are a bender. As a non-bender, that’s something incredible to pull off. This is because this chosen weapon of the Kyoshi Warriors lacks a bladed edge and it does not pose any particular threat to enemies. You cannot even  swing it around to cut enemies. So just how could Avatar Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors make this a lethal weapon? Simple.

The Kyoshi Warriors use the fans to turn their enemies’ strength against them. The war fans are used defensively, redirecting the force of the enemy’s weapons. Suki is one of the most prolific war fan users, a pure master. She is also the first non-bender we meet in the series to use another weapon that is not a spear or a sword. This makes her a really formidable opponent.

4. She Is A Patient and Understanding Person

It takes a lot to be able to deal with a person like Sokka, and while we see her man-manage his silly and over dramatic side, our first inkling as to how understanding Suki can be is during a rather tense moment.

When Suki and Sokka reunite at the Serpent’s Pass, they almost begin a romance. This confirms the fact that they have feelings for each other. But then as she attempts to kiss him under the full moon, Sokka feels guilty and puts a stop to it. He eventually explains that he feels bad moving on from Princess Yue, with whom he had a brief affair when the series first began. Suki does not even take the rejection personally, and allows Sokka to come into his own about his feelings for her. That’s a top level character.

5. Suki is An Important Member of Team Avatar

Although she is mostly forgotten as a member of Team Avatar, Suki actually does play an integral part to the team’s eventual defeat of the Fire Nation. Countless times she proves to be the deciding factor in the team’s fate. Examples of these instances include when she helps Appa during his travails, or when she saves Toph and Sokka from crashing during the war. She is ever ready to do what it takes for the greater cause, even if it means she may not get out of it alive.

6. She Has A Forgiving Spirit

When we first meet Suki in the series, she almost takes Sokka’s head off for his snide and misogynistic remarks towards the Kyoshi Warriors. Despite her initial dislike for Sokka, she eventually shows she has a forgiving heart when she accepts his apologies to her and the warriors. She even allows him to join the squad, teaching him the ways of the Kyoshi Warriors. Thus, Sokka became the very first foreigner to join the Warriors, and the very first male member as well.

Avatar Suki is a great character in and out. She is loyal to her friends, an excellent warrior, and embodies everything a female heroine should. She’s our top pick for the best female character in the Avatar series, and it’s not hard to see why.

7. She is Not a Bender

The show tends to glorify benders, but we forget how much courage it requires to fight others and not be a bender. Ty Lee, and Sokka both deserve a lot of credit for this as well. Benders will use all of their bending moves on nonbenders, and these fighters are still able to hold their ground when they need to.

Suki is so good at fighting benders that you begin to forget that she is not

After the death of the moon spirit Tui, she was burdened by the responsibility to give back the life she had been given. Early Life of Princess Yue

Yue was born to the water tribe chief as a sick child. She had an unknown illness which caused her to almost be born still and asleep. As an Infant, she was quiet and didn’t cry but remained asleep. This caused her parents to worry, and they feared that she would die. Her condition, growing critical, the tribe’s healers had tried their best. Yagoda, one of the best healers in the whole nation, also put in the unlimited effort but to no avail.

They all concluded that princess Yue was going to die. Arnook, desperate to save his daughter’s life, begged the moon spirit to save her. That night, under the full moon, he brought her to the spirit oasis. This was the center of all spiritual energy in the nation and was also the same Oasis that Avatar Wan came across after he was banished, weary and hungry.

He placed her in the pond, and her once black hair turned white. The moon gifted her with part of its life force. Thus, she survived, and her parents named her Yue, meaning for the moon.

Prior to Team Avatar’s arrival at the North Pole and the siege that would take place, Yue was arranged to marry a young water tribe warrior named Hahn.

He carved a betrothal necklace for her to mark their engagement, but she did not really love him and consented to the marriage only to stay in line with her people’s customs. Sokka resented this custom as he was in love with her soon after they met.

Meeting with Team Avatar

Soon after they arrived, Young Sokka was sorely smitten by her beauty and entirety. He engaged her in a conversation at the party her father threw in recognition of the Avatar’s arrival and her sixteenth birthday. Her father, Master Pakku, who would later be Aang and Katara’s teacher, was also seated alongside her.

After awkwardly flirting with each other, they arrange to meet and do “an activity,” as Sokka referred to it.
These activities included riding on Appa and taking walks together around the city.

Although affection was budding between the two of them, she still was bound in an arranged marriage to Hahn. As Sokka later realizes and tells him, Princess Yue was wasted on a selfish and self-absorbed jerk like him. Hahn had more love for her high status than toward her, boasting once to Sokka that he had courted several girls, but “she came with the most perks.”

The two individuals come to realize their love for each other, but she could not bear to continue their meetings because they conflicted so strongly with her responsibilities to her tribe. He eventually became angered when she insisted that being together was “wrong” and that it was her duty to marry Hahn for her people. He heatedly tells her that she was not marrying her people.

During Admiral Xhao’s siege of the North, chief Arnook takes Sokka off the super important mission, which has him fuming. He later tells him that he wants him for something even more important, which is protecting his daughter. He did this because he had noticed how much love was between them.

On returning to the Oasis, they see that Zhao has captured the moon spirit in its mortal form. He fatally strikes the spirit, causing it to be Injured and at the point of death. This leaves all the water benders practically powerless.

Appearing on the scene, Iroh saw that she had been touched by the Moon Spirit, which reminded her how her life was saved by Tui as a newborn. Once again, acting dutifully to her tribe, Yue sacrificed herself to give back the life that the moon had given her.

Against Sokka’s wishes, she places her hands on the fish and collapses into Sokka’s arms. She closes her eyes and dies in his arms almost immediately. She subsequently appears as a spirit to Sokka, shares a tender kiss with him and a promise to always be with him.

At the moment, the once darkened moon reappears in the sky, and Princess Yue became the moon.
Yue’s spirit appeared before Sokka and her father shortly after.

After The Death of Princess Yue

Yue appears several times after her death in the series. Several times following her death, Yue’s influence on Sokka became evident and even more obvious.

While Team Avatar was trapped in the Foggy Swamp under its spiritual influence, Sokka hallucinated about her. Her hallucination regrettably told him that he failed to protect her. This was a reflection of the guilt he carried about her death. During his time in the Si Wong Desert, Sokka directly referred to the moon as Yue while in an intoxicated state brought about by drinking cactus juice.
|
When Sokka and Suki nearly kissed while crossing the Serpent’s Pass, a warning glimpse of the moon could be visible in the background. This reminded him of Yue’s presence, and his memory of Yue’s death prompted him to refuse the kiss while acting overly protective of Suki.

After Aang was struck down by Princess Azula’s lightning during the Coup of Ba Sing Se, Yue was able to provide more tangible assistance to Team Avatar: She took it upon herself to meet the Avatar in the Spirit World. She was instrumental before and after her death and is a viable member of the Team Avatar.

Is Avatar Anime? How to Know What is Anime or Not

No Otaku can claim not to have been plagued with this question at least once or twice. Of course, Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the greatest anime series ever to grace our screens. But the question that begs to be answered still hangs over our heads like the sword of Damocles.

Over the years, we have witnessed the evolution of animation. We have seen Traditional animation, 2D animation, 3D animation, Motion Graphics, and Stop motion. Anime adopts 2D animation. There have been a few calls for animes to be created in 3D, but faithful anime viewers have gotten used to being entertained in 2D.

First off, isn’t anime just animation? What is the difference between the two? Well, anime is simply the Japanese word for animation. Japanese call all kinds of animations anime. However, transporting this word to non-Japanese natives, they simply call all animation productions made in Japanese anime.

So, technically, the answer to Avatar: The Last Airbender being an anime is no… and yes. From the non-native Japanese perspective, it has all the characteristics of the average Japanese anime. However, it was not made in Japan, so it fails the ‘right to be called an anime’ test. But from the Japanese standpoint, any animation, irrespective of the nation it was created, is an anime.

However, we understand that the animes (we call Japan-made animation that from now on) have a few characteristics that make them distinct from other anime kinds. We discuss some of these characteristics below.

Is Avatar Anime? Understanding What Makes Anime!

COMPLEXITY IN ITS PLOTS

We know animes have a distinctive plot type that takes some time for their viewers to grasp. These plots are not like normal animation plots. Typically, it could take 50 to sixty episodes in order to properly exhaustively develop a storyline. Plot development itself takes dozens of episodes before it is adequately developed before the viewers catch a whiff of the direction that the anime is taking.

Also, the anime characters tend to be complex as well. Contemporary animated movies have their characters develop a personality trait or two and lay emphasis on these personalities. On the other hand, the design of anime characters is more complex. They tend to develop these characters in a way that they have different layers. This helps them to present the viewers with a person with various personality traits.

For instance, Yagami Light in Death Note is a very complex character whose character was so complex, a faction loved him so much and wished there was someone like him in reality, while another faction out-rightly condemned his actions and said the world does not need a human being having such powers.

Also, different characters are also introduced to the storyline to make it rich and fascinating. This causes the length of the story to be satisfactorily stretched without it being too excessive.

FOCUS on Adults

The traditional animations are usually made for both young and old to enjoy. It is the same with anime. There are even anime specifically made for kids. However, the characteristics of the plots in the world of anime reach the adult populace better than the children.

If we take into consideration the attention span of children, they will find it difficult to complete some anime. For instance, the length of the likes of ‘Naruto’ and the almighty ‘One Piece’ (which is yet to be completed, by the way) makes even a few adults grumble. Only adults can easily keep up with the lengthy episodes and engage the plot twists encountered in various arcs properly.

Most anime storylines are adult-themed. Most anime have the ability to reach different kinds of people of various age ranges and cultures. However, anime often places its focus on adults. The humor incorporated into it is majorly enjoyed by the adult populace as it is mostly injected to lighten up the dark theme that only adults can comprehend.

EXAGGERATED PHYSICAL FEATURES

Another distinctive feature of anime is the character’s physical features. While most of the characters may have a normal body outlook, there are a few exaggerations and peculiarities of their facial expressions or reactions. Facial expressions, actions, and the colors used are exaggerated to show the state of mind of a particular character at that moment.

For instance, in some animes, one way to know if an anime character is thinking about something rated 18+ is the blood running down the nose of the individual without physical violence inflicted in them. Another instance is the use of a large teardrop to depict embarrassment.

One of the most visually noticed physical exaggerations can be found in the eyes of the character. Sometimes, these eyes can be depicted on the character’s face larger than usual. To show more emotion, the eyes are the main outlets to depict what the character is going through or what is going through his/her mind.

Another physical feature that anime have that separates them from other animation types is the wide variety of hair types of their characters. Most of the characters have unnaturally wild and colored hair types. For instance, Naruto has spikey orange hair that fits well enough with his outfit, Yuji Itadori from Jijutsu Kaisen has pink hair, Khun Aguero from Tower of God has rowdy blue hair, among others.

LIMITED ANIMATION

One last characteristic of anime is something known as limited animation. Amines are 2D animation productions, so they are created with certain techniques. Unlike other animation types, anime uses Limited animation. The limited animation technique is the utilization of certain pieces of a scene that are reused in the next scene.

This way, all the artiste needs to do is to draw new elements in the former scene instead of creating a new scene every time.
One of the advantages of using limited animation is that it basically reduces cost. It also takes lesser time, unlike other animation techniques.

Having learned what an anime is and what it is not, so we ask the question once again…

Is Avatar an anime?

Even though Avatar tends to have a sprinkle of a few of the characters above, and it borrows a lot of cultural connotations from the Asian culture, it cannot be categorized as what the West calls anime. It is obvious that Japanese anime heavily influenced the creation of Nickelodeon’s Avatar. Here are a few similarities it has with the traditional anime that makes people think it’s anime.

CULTURAL INFLUENCE

As stated earlier, Asian culture heavily influences the creation of Avatar. It didn’t adopt one particular culture. For instance, the Earth Kingdom has its roots in Chinese culture, and the Southern Asian Cultures are sources of inspiration for the Fire Nation.

Most animes come from Japanese culture, so it is no surprise that people think of Avatar as an anime also.

ARCS AND STORY ELEMENTS

Anime has this similarity in their storylines that their main characters have to go through great trials until they reach the peak of their strengths and stand above all else. Avatar has the same walkthrough as Aang had to overcome a lot of fears and obstacles and to develop into a person strong enough to overcome the fire nation, and of course, not forgetting the place of the power of friendship.

Anime is known for diving into various story arcs that seem of the trajectory of the actual storyline. However, these serve as a sort of a reveal of certain personality traits that will make the viewers understand a few decisions that a character might make that seem out of character. Avatar has that also, and an example is in Book Three, where Zuko, Azula, Tai Lee, and Mai had a whole episode dedicated to them chilling at the beach.

So Why is Avatar The Last Airbender Anime?

The fact is Avatar is extremely similar to anime as it checks most of the boxes. However, people need to understand that anime is an industry. The Avatar franchise was not made in the anime industry. It’s almost like saying an Indian Super Hero movie like Krrish is a Hollywood movie simply because of its similarities to Marvel or DC comic movies. This can be said in the case of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Avatar Roku & Everything You Need to Know About Him

Roku was a fire nation Avatar that came after the legendary Avatar Kyoshi. He is also the preceding Avatar to Avatar Aang. Roku’s spirit served as a constant guide at specific points of Aang’s journey in the quest to defeat Fire Lord Ozai during the 100-year war. Roku was a wise and lenient Avatar and although he himself acknowledged that the war was and Sozin gaining so much ground was as a result of his indecisiveness.

Another factor is that his lifelong friendship with Fire Lord Sozin played a great deal in his reluctance to take action against his best friend. This led to the war gaining ground and the fire nation expanding its territory. Roku was also a fire nation born, thus, he may have had to walk softly so as not to be regarded as a traitor.

This ultimately was the cause of Roku’s death, which prevented him from stopping a war that would go on to last for one hundred years. This is something that weighed heavily on him in his afterlife. Aang inherited Roku’s burden of healing the war-torn world, and Roku firmly believed Aang was destined to fix his mistakes.

Avatar Roku’s Early Life

In Roku’s early years, he was best friends with then Prince Sozin at that time. They spent a lot of time together, constantly sparring and practicing their fire bending. They were extremely close and of course the best of friends. Sozin was quickly able to tell that Roku had a crush on Ta Min, a fire nation girl. He encouraged Roku to speak with her. Roku and Prince Sozin shared a birthday which they celebrated together every year.

During one of their birthday parties, with Sozin celebrating his and Roku’s sixteenth birthday, Roku had the most shocking revelation. He was informed by the Fire Sages that he was the Avatar. Before Roku left the Fire Nation to master the other three elements, Sozin came by to talk to him and was informed by Roku that the Sages had told him not to bring anything with him on his travels, as the Avatar required no worldly possessions on his journey.

After learning this, Sozin gave him the headpiece worn by the Crown Prince of the Fire Nation, hoping that he was at least allowed to have that. Roku took the headpiece gratefully and wore it for the rest of his life.

Roku’s Avatar Journey

After learning that he was the Avatar, Roku began traveling to all the other nations to learn their sacred arts of bending. He trained under Masters to learn the other bending arts. Following the natural order of the elemental cycles, he had to learn air bending first.

To accomplish this, he traveled to the Southern Air Temple. While he was there, Roku became very good friends with a young Air Nomad named Gyatso, who would, in his elder years, become the guardian, mentor, and friend to Avatar Aang. A viable proof that friendships can indeed transcend lifetimes.

In one of the air bending lessons that Roku underwent which involved the students taking off with their gliders; Roku showed off by performing a loop. When Gyatso saw this and tried to upstage him by air-surfing, he lost control and fell.

Roku did however come to the aid of his friend. Although their combined weight proved too much for Roku to control. They lost control and crashed into the other students that were standing safely on the ground.

After years of training and mastering air bending, Roku traveled to the Northern Water tribe to master water bending. This was particularly difficult for him as he was working with his natural opposite. Fire is to Water as Earth is to Air. We would later see Avatar Aang’s struggle to master Earth bending as it was his natural opposite as well. Roku recalls his whole process of learning the bending arts and mastering them as bitter work.

However, years of practice and training helped him to duel his master and stand his ground. During one of these sparring sessions, Avatar Roku took the brunt of a water blow and ended up in the ocean, but popped back up to stand on an ice platform and swept his teacher away with a tall wave of water, crashing into the pinnacle of the chief’s palace, a good distance away.

After he had mastered this, he traveled to the Earth Kingdom to learn earth bending from a master named Sud. This was also another difficult task as mastering the bending arts required you to forget everything else that you knew but still remember it at the same time. They had different forms but were perceived as one of a great whole. He developed a great friendship. During one of their training sessions, they raced each other atop slabs of the earth to the top of a hill.

Although Sud was in the lead most of the time, Roku managed to beat him to the top with time to spare to prepare tea for both of them, much to Sud’s surprise. This showed great mastery and ease in performance. After he had mastered the bending arts, he moved on to more Avatar duties. He was to master the Avatar state and understand more of the spiritual side of the Avatar.

Mastering The Avatar State

After mastering the bending arts, Roku went back to the fire nation. By this time, years had passed and he was already close to becoming a fully realized Avatar. He retired to a crescent Island for 5 months where he attempted to master the Avatar state. This was one of the Avatar temples in the fire nation.

He attempted to master the Avatar State under the guidance of a Fire Sage named Kaja. Avatar Roku growing impatient after failing to master it with meditation tried using the winter solstice sun to force himself into the Avatar State.

Despite his success, he became trapped under its influence and was unable to control his powers, resulting in the destruction of the upper half of the Fire Temple and the eruption of the nearby volcano. Kaja eventually managed to free Roku from the state by aligning the Avatar’s eyes with the winter solstice sun once more, halting the destruction of the temple.

In penance for his near destruction of the Fire Sages’ temple, Roku rebuilt parts of the temple and carved new underground passages out of the island’s magma. This was seen in the Last air bender series when Shayu escorted Aang and his friends through the underground secret passageways. After the incident, Roku became more patient with his training and completely mastered the Avatar State afterward.

Roku’s Return

After the mastery of the bending arts and the Avatar state, Roku returned home, a fully realized Avatar.

He reunited with Sozin and they shared a hug. He went on to marry his childhood sweetheart Ta Min. Sozin was his best man at the wedding.

At the wedding, Sozin asked to speak with Roku in private and informed his close friend that he had thought hard about the state of the world.

He told Roku that he strongly believed the Fire Nation had entered a period of great prosperity and proposed to Roku that together the pair could spread this wealth to the world by expanding the empire. Roku was shocked by his horrific preposition and firmly told Sozin that the four nations were to be kept separate. He also advised that he never bring the subject forth in future conversations.

Later in his life, Roku found a dragon, Fang, when he was a baby, not yet hatched from his egg, and adopted him as his animal guide and constant companion during his life as the Avatar. He eventually settled down and began living out his life with Ta Min, with whom he later had a daughter, Rina.

Seventeen years after Roku’s wedding, he discovers that Sozin had went ahead with his plans and set up colonies in the Earth kingdom. Infuriated by Sozin’s act of war, Roku confronted his old friend friend, blasting through the doors of the throne room inside the fire nation palace.

He bashed his friend and ordered him to cease the expansion he was trying to achieve. When Sozin replied that Roku’s loyalty was to the fire nation and to his Fire Lord, he also further enunciated that halting the progress of this expansion made him a traitor. Roku warned Sozin not to challenge him and as he turned to leave, Sozin attacked.

Roku easily dodged this attack and used earth bending to reappear behind Sozin. This let Roku strike him with an air blast. Suspending Sozin in the air with an earth pair by the collar of his robe, he entered the Avatar state and destroyed the throne room. He spared Sozin’s life for the sake of their friendship and wanted him that any plans to further the expansion would result in Sozin’s permanent end.

Twenty-five years later, a volcanic explosion erupted at Roku’s home. He was able to save the rest of the island’s inhabitants.

Roku ultimately realizes that his death was inevitable. Right before the pyroclastic flow engulfed him, Fang curled up with his master and the two died together.
