Sokka is the only one of the original team avatar that does not have any type of bending ability. And from the initial reactions to Katara’s water bending it became obvious that he did not like the benders at all. This was probably because the Fire Nation had destroyed their tribe and killed their mother. And because of the war that the Fire Nation had started nearly a hundred years earlier, both Sokka and Katara were forced to separate from their father as well.

Although Sokka wanted to join his father on the front, there was no one of his age in the crew. And he was also the oldest male member of the tribe at the South Pole. So he was made the chief of the tribe. All of these things combined to make Sokka hate the benders belonging to any nation. In this article, we will briefly look at the history of both these characters with the team Avatar and how Zuko x Sokka bromance developed.

Sokka And Team Avatar

Sokka met Avatar Aang in the first episode of book one. And was the one who discovered Aang in his frozen bubble after a hundred years of hibernation. Sokka and Katara were hunting for fish when they discovered Aang. Sokka was initially skeptical of Aang and did not believe that he was an Airbender. Because Firelord Sozin had wiped all the Air Nomads at the start of The Hundred Year War. Even when they boarded on Appa after Aang offered them a lift. Appa could not fly because of fatigue. So Sokka had more reason to believe that Aang was an imposter.

But eventually Sokka was convinced that Aang is a good person. And he is also the last hope for all the Nations to defeat the Firelord Max Ozai and stop the Fire Nation. Sokka initially grew closer to Aang and even Appa took a liking to Sokka. Although Sokka has no ability to bend. But he still became the strategist of the Team Avatar and even scheduled all the activities. So that Aang can complete his training and defeat the Firelord.

Sokka’s Intelligence

It was also Sokka’s idea to find out information about the Fire Nation. And for this, the team went to Knowledge Spirit’s Library. Furthermore, it was his idea to find out about the exact date and duration of a Solar eclipse before the arrival of Sozin’s comet. And it was also proposed by Sokka that they invade the Fire Nation on this day so that Aang can defeat the Firelord Max Ozai.

Sokka improved as a leader and tactician over the years which resulted in him planning the excellent invasion plan of the Fire Nation on the day of the Black Sun. His plan was flawless but was discovered by Azula when she came to Ba Sing Se disguised as a Kyoshi Warrior. Because of this, the invasion failed and all of the invading force surrendered to allow Avatar Aang and the rest of the team to escape from the Fire Nation. Although Zuko and Sokka met quite a few times, the true Zuko x Sokka bromance started when Zuko came to join the team.

Zuko And The Team Avatar

Zuko was banished from the Fire Nation by his father who further imposed the condition that Zuko will only be allowed back when he finds and bring the lost Avatar with him. So Zuko became obsessed with finding the Avatar and became the expert on tracking him using various means. Zuko’s Uncle Iroh also came with Zuko when he was banished to guide the Young Prince throughout his journey.

Iroh always saw the good in Zuko and emphasized accepting his true destiny as opposed to the one that his father had imposed on him. Zuko was so desperate to catch the Avatar and restore his honor. That he lost the path of his true destiny. He even helped Aang escape from Commander Zhao’s grip to capture the avatar himself. Zuko finally decided to accept his true destiny which was to help Avatar Aang in stopping the Firelord. He revealed this to his father on the day of Black Sun.

When Zuko came to team Avatar in the Western Air Temple they were skeptical and did not accept him. Only Toph favored him because Aang needed someone to teach him firebending and only then will he be able to defeat the Firelord. The team changes their point of view when they see Zuko helping them against combustion man.

Zuko x Sokka

Zuko x Sokka interactions started in the second episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender (TV Series). When Zuko comes to Sokka’s tribe to catch the Avatar, Sokka faces him but is immediately kicked aside by Zuko. After this whenever Zuko came after the team Zuko x Sokka banter started with Sokka ridiculing him. But they truly developed mutual trust in The Boiling Rock episode of book 3. Zuko offers a ride to Sokka to reach the boiling rock prison where Sokka thinks his father and the rest of the invading force are being held.

The Boiling Rock Adventure

They go to the prison and infiltrate it in the guise of two prison guards. They do not find Sokka’s father or any of the other members of the invading force. But they do manage to find Suki. So they plan to leave the prison in a cooler but are overheard by another inmate named Chit Sang. Right, when they are about to escape Zuko reveals that he heard some guards saying that a new batch of prisoners will be arriving the next day. So Sokka, Zuko and Suki stay behind.

They find out that Sokka’s father Hakoda is actually present in the next batch of prisoners. Azula had also arrived at the prison and when all of the heroes are trying to escape they faced a fierce competition from Azula but were eventually successful in escaping when Mae helped the team out of her lover for Zuko.

After this encounter, the Zuko x Sokka pair was formed in the true sense. After this, they never looked back and their friendship grew with each passing day.

Aang Vs Ozai: A Battle of Epic Proportions

When Aang finally faces the Firelord in the five part series finale of Avatar: The Last Airbender, no one has any idea how monumental this fight would be. There were teases of course, as it was a final showdown; but Aang vs Ozai came with a bang louder than anyone could have imagined.

In this article, we’ll take a look at the Aang vs Ozai fight, and discuss a few specifics on the epic event. More specifically, was it a bigger fight than that of Zuko and Azula’s; and why did Aang not kill Ozai?

Aang Vs Ozai: Why Aang Did Not Kill Firelord Ozai

When Aang vs Ozai was at its very peak, Aang had the chance to kill Ozai. But in the series finale of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Aang did not. Instead, he let his personal beliefs lead him to spare Ozai.

Fire Lord Ozai was the primary villain of Avatar, having inherited his title and position as ruler of the Fire Nation from his father Azulon, who inherited it from his father, Sozin. It was Sozin who began the Hundred Year War, wiped out the Air Nomads; and plunged the world of Avatar into violence and chaos. But when Aang was faced with the opportunity to exact vengeance for the wrongdoings of Ozai and his ancestors, Aang chose not to kill Ozai.

In Avatar season 3, episode 21, “Sozin’s Comet, Part 4: Avatar Aang,” culminates with Aang trapping Ozai by using earthbending and then forming a giant spear composed of all the elements. Aang plunges the spear toward Ozai, but at the last second, Aang stops and comes out of the Avatar State.

Aang says, “No, I’m not going to end it like this.” Before Ozai can attack Aang again, Aang traps him once again using earthbending and then uses energy bending — taught to him by a lion turtle, the originators of all bending — to take away Ozai’s firebending.

So Why Didn’t Aang vs Ozai End With Ozai’s Death?

The reason Aang chose to take away Ozai’s bending rather than kill him has to do with Aang’s beliefs as well as his personality. Aang has a strong moral compass that points toward nonviolence and diplomacy, when possible. Generally, Air Nomads are peaceful people who believe in the sanctity of all life (as such, they are also vegetarians) and they do not believe that any good comes from revenge.

Aang explains this to Katara just two episodes before the series finale. In season 3, episode 16, “The Southern Raiders,” Katara is desperate to find and kill the man who killed her mother, but Aang urges her to reconsider and warns her with a saying that he learned from the monks who raised him at the Southern Air Temple: “Revenge is like a two-headed rat viper. While you watch your enemy go down, you’re being poisoned yourself”

Aang vs Ozai: Understanding Aang’s ‘No Kill’ Rule

Aang, however, did not always practice as he preached, making the point a little less effective. In season 2, episode 11, “The Desert,” a buzzard wasp takes Aang’s flying lemur, Momo. Even after rescuing Momo, Aang kills the buzzard wasp when he didn’t need to – it was clearly an act of revenge.

Between sinking ships in the ocean and knocking airships out of the sky, Aang likely killed several people over the course of the series. While no one is shown to have died as a direct result of their actions – and it is, after all, a kid’s show – it’s worth noting that Aang didn’t seem to have as strict of a “no-kill” rule as the series finale would have us believe.

Zuko makes Aang promise to kill him if he becomes like his father and Aang reluctantly agrees. But shortly thereafter, Aang meditates with Avatar Roku, who tells Aang that he wishes he had killed Sozin when he saw what Sozin was becoming.

Aang is horrified by the prospect of killing his new friend, yet similarly begins to fear what Zuko might become. Wondering if Roku could have been right, Aang nearly does kill Zuko. Luckily, Katara is able to calm him out of the Avatar State and Aang apologizes to Zuko.

The Avatar Is Every Part Only Human

While Aang was the Avatar, he was also human. He had weaknesses and sometimes became volatile, but it reveals something of Aang’s character that he only became angry when someone innocent was harmed or threatened, particularly those he loved, like his flying bison, Appa, and love interest, Katara.

Even then, he often chose mercy and peace over his impulses, which is why he chose to spare Fire Lord Ozai’s life. Avatar: The Last Airbender ends with Ozai in prison, while his son, Zuko, ascends the throne. Zuko and Aang work together to bring balance to the nations without the need for killing anyone.

Aang vs Ozai: Reasons Why Their Battle Was The Best In The Series

The stakes were raised to the max: running away definitely wasn’t to be considered, and losing would have meant that the characters would lose their lives, not to mention the Fire Nation would win the Hundred Year War. There was another fight going on at the same time; the fight between Zuko and Azula (featuring Katara) – but here are reasons why Aang vs Ozai was the better fight.

Aang Had Been Preparing for Aang vs Ozai Since The Series’ Beginning

Since the first season of Avatar, this battle was what propelled the plot forward: Aang had to master all four elements before the arrival of Sozin’s Comet so that he could defeat the Fire Lord and end the Hundred Year War. Although things got a bit more complicated given the fact that Ozai managed to elude him during the solar eclipse, an encounter with Aang and Ozai was always inevitable.

The emotional payoff of finally seeing this battle finally come to fruition can’t really be trumped by other fights in the franchise, no matter how anticipated those conflicts were as well.

The Fight Between Aang and Ozai Introduced The Concept of Energybending

While viewers may have not known it at the time; energybending would become an important element of the franchise moving forward.

Aang’s newfound ability to deprive someone of bending only helped to usher in Book 1 of The Legend of Korra; giving this new show a perfect way to connect to its predecessor. It also helped to expand on a brand new concept that fans didn’t get to delve into as much.

Given that Korra often involved herself with spirits, energy bending only became more pivotal to the series; making the conclusion to Ozai and Aang’s duel a fight that only expanded upon the lore of the franchise.

It Was A Longer Fight Than Any Other Fight In The Finale

While Aang vs Ozai and Zuko & Katara vs Azula were fights that were crucial to wrapping up the series; Aang’s fight with the Fire Lord is a lot longer than the other fight.

Aang’s fight is almost broken up into different phases. The first part shows Ozai with the upper hand against Aang, the second part shows Aang entering the Avatar State. In the third Aang takes away Ozai’s bending in a scene like nothing anyone had seen in the show before.

The Battle’s Symbolism

It was almost ironic that Sozin, Fire Lord Ozai’s grandfather; used the power of Sozin’s Comet to wipe out all but one of the airbenders. Fast-forward a hundred years later; and his grandson used that same power in an attempt to finish the job by defeating Aang. If he were successful, Ozai would’ve turned Sozin’s dreams into reality. In taking down Ozai, Aang was essentially punishing Ozai and his forefathers for the damage they’d brought to the world.

It’s not a mistake that when Ozai had Aang backed into a corner; he stated that the airbenders were weak and had no place in the world. Aang on the other hand, in the Avatar State, accused Ozai and his forefathers of disrupting the balance. This conflict was personal; even though it was one that was started long before Aang and Ozai had the power to influence their world.

It Was A Fight That Showcased Aang’s Most Powerful Use Of The Avatar State

Whenever Aang entered the Avatar State, fans were treated to some of the strongest bending in the series. This time, he utilized advanced bending techniques that viewers had never seen before; he created bullets out of rock, moved humongous columns, flew through the sky with a sphere of air. Not to mention, he used a sphere of all four elements that he nearly used to take Ozai out once and for all.

This moment marked Aang as the fully-realized Avatar that he worked so hard to become; and made fans realize just how much the Avatar State set him above any other bender alive. This is considering the fact that prior, Ozai, who had been dominating up to that point, could only flee from Aang’s newfound power.

(Avatar) Yue: Things You Didn’t Know About Her

Aang and his friends met a lot of allies during their travels over three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Not all of them were able to be a part of the series for the long haul, but many of them made a big impression on viewers in their brief appearances. One of those was avatar Yue of the Northern Water Tribe.

Avatar Yue became a fan favorite due to her kindness, her commitment to her people, and her feelings for Sokka. Though her time on the show was short, her presence was felt long after she was gone thanks to her giving up her life to become the moon spirit.  With such a short time on the series, however, there are a few things fans might not know about her.

(Avatar) Yue Cannot Waterbend In Life

Yue is the daughter of the tribe’s leader, and she has incredibly high social standing in her community, but she is not a waterbender. That’s not because Master Pakku wouldn’t teach her, but because Avatar Yue didn’t have the innate ability in life. She did, however, have the ability in death.

Once Avatar Yue became the spirit of the moon, she could push and pull the tides, allowing her the moon’s version of waterbending. She helped Aang to create large waves in some of his final battles in the series.

Her Hair Was Not Originally White

Thanks to Yue’s story of her infancy, the audience knew that her hair turned white when she was a baby when the spirit of the moon gave her life. They might not realize just how unnatural that is.

Throughout the series, Yue is the only young character who has white hair. It’s in huge contrast to Japanese anime that uses a rainbow of colors for hair. Avatar sticks with more “natural” colors, with gray and white hair indicating advanced age for the characters.

(Avatar) Yue’s Name Means Moon

Before Yue’s fate in the series is revealed, some fans might have already thought she was special if they’re familiar with Mandarin. That’s because her name is the Mandarin word for moon.

It’s not so much as a subtle clue, as long as fans know what they’re looking for.

Her Eyes Were A Visual Clue By The Animators

When General Zhao ended Tui’s life, the entire event wasn’t shown on screen, but its aftermath was. The world around everyone went gray as the light of the moon was snuffed out. Even the characters were dulled in color reflecting that they were shrouded in shadow.

Yue’s eyes, however, didn’t turn grey in the shadow like everyone else’s around her. Instead, they shined a bright blue, indicating that the moon spirit was still alive in her before the characters came to the same conclusion.

They Named A Bay After Avatar Yue

Considering Avatar Yue was so briefly a part of the original Avatar series, fans might not have expected her influence to continue to be felt in Legend Of Korra. If they pay attention to locations in the series though, they’ll discover she’s been honored.

Like many of the historical figures in the franchise, Yue has a location named for her. Specifically, it’s a bay near Republic City.

Avatar Yue’s Appearance As The Moon Spirit Is Inspired By The Chinese

Just as Avatar Yue’s name was taken from the Mandarin word for moon, her look once she became the spirit of the moon also took inspiration from China. Though it’s never been officially confirmed, her appearance looked to be modeled after Chang’e, the Chinese goddess of the moon.

Like Yue, Chang’e also had long, flowing robes, with additional ribbons and layered skirts, though she wore her hair tied back tightly. Yue’s hairstyle from her human form remained in her spirit form.

Yue Was The First On-Screen Human Death In The Series

Most of the time in the Avatar the Last Airbender series, death was implied – or left up to the audience to wonder what happened to a character. Even the death of the moon spirit wasn’t shown on screen. Instead, the effects of it were demonstrated with character reactions and a changing color palette.

Avatar Yue deciding to sacrifice herself, on the other hand, marked the first time the audience actually watched a character die. She even kisses Sokka goodbye in spirit form. That might be one of the reasons fans consistently find the sequence one of the saddest moments in the show.

Yue In Avatar The Last Airbender Season 1

Because the Avatar series was so rich with history, and expanded its family trees in the sequel series Legend Of Korra, fans have a keen interest in family lineage. Unfortunately, Yue remains mostly a mystery.

While her father, Arnook, played a major role during Aang’s time with the Northern Water Tribe, and her mother was shown in flashback to her infancy, Yue’s mother never even received a name in the series.

The Ember Island Players Got Avatar Yue Right

Avatar the Last Airbender was one of the rarest series to feature a clip show that audiences actually enjoyed. In their case, the main cast of characters attended a play performed by the Ember Island Players about Aang’s quest.

While most of the characters hated their portrayal (Katara in particular), Toph was the only one who enjoyed the liberties they took with her. Most of what the Players featured was also not exactly correct. Interestingly, Yue’s part of the story was, which was likely a testament to her people’s gratitude for her sacrifice. The Ember Island Players supposedly interviewed people Aang and his friends came into contact with to write their script

Avatar Yue’s Her Mother Was Never Named

Because the Avatar series was so rich with history; and expanded its family trees in the sequel series Legend Of Korra, fans have a keen interest in family lineage. Unfortunately, the family history of Avatar Yue remains mostly a mystery.

While her father, Arnook, played a major role during Aang’s time with the Northern Water Tribe; and her mother was shown in flashback to her infancy, Yue’s mother never even received a name in the series.

Princess Yue is a water tribe princess, born to the Northern water tribe’s chief. She is the daughter of Chief Arnook and she also serves him as one of his advisors. After the death of the moon spirit Tui, she felt obligated with a huge responsibility to give back the life that the moon spirit had given her. The moon spirit was killed by Zhao, a fire nation soldier, and Admiral. Yue sacrificed and replaced the moon spirit, sharing the position. This was during the Siege of the Northern water tribe.

Yue’s Early Life

The princess was born to the water tribe chief as a sick child. She had an illness that no one knew about which caused her to almost be born still and asleep. As a child, she was quiet, remained asleep and didn’t cry. This caused her parents to worry and they feared that she would die. Her condition, growing critical, the tribe’s healers had tried their best.

Yagoda, one of the best healers in the whole nation also put in unlimited effort but to no avail. They all concluded that princess Yue was going to die. Chief Arnook, in a desperate bout to save his daughter’s life, begged the moon spirit to save her. That night, under the full moon, he brought her to the spirit oasis. The Oasis is regarded as the center of all spiritual energy in the nation.

This was also the same oasis that Avatar Wan came across after he was banished from his hometown in the Fire Lion Turtle City. Chief Arnook placed her in the pond and her hair turned white. The moon spirit gifted her with part of its life force. Thus, she survived and her parents named her Yue, meaning for the moon.

Yue was arranged to marry a young water tribe warrior named Hahn. Prior to Team Avatar’s arrival at the North Pole where the siege that would take place,

Hahn had carved a betrothal necklace for her. This is a tradition done in the water tribe by new couples to mark their engagement. Yue did not really love him and consented to the marriage as a duty to her people. She also did this to stay in line with her people’s customs. Sokka resented this decision, telling her that she was not marrying her people as he was in love with her soon after they met.

Yue & Team Avatar

Soon as the team arrived at the North Pole, Sokka was already smitten by the beauty of Yue Avatar and her whole appearance. He got in a conversation with her at the party that her father threw in recognition of the Avatar’s arrival and her sixteenth birthday. Her father, Master Paku, who Chief Arnook arranged to be Aang’s and later Katara’s water bending teacher was also seated alongside her.

Sokka awkwardly flirts with her and the two of them arrange to meet and do “an activity” as Sokka told her. These activities included riding on Appa and taking romantic walks together around the city.

Even if there was a lot of affection between the two of them, she was still hesistant. This is because she was bound in an arranged marriage to Hahn. Sokka gets in a fight with Hahn and later and tells him that Princess Yue was wasted on a selfish and self-absorbed jerk like him.

Hahn had more love for her social status than who she was. He boasted to Sokka that he had courted several girls but “she came with the most perks”. This was one of the reasons that Sokka flared up and tried to beat Hahn up.

Yue and Sokka come to realize their love for each other. Even if Sokka knew how he felt about her almost the moment that he saw her. Even still, she could not bear to continue meeting with him because they confused her so much. She also strongly felt that this would interfere with her responsibilities to her tribe.

He becomes angry when she insisted that being together was “wrong” and that it was her duty to marry Hahn for her people. He heatedly tells her that she was not marrying her people.

During Admiral Zhao’s siege of the North, chief Arnook takes Sokka off the super important mission. Sokka becomes angry, but Arnook later tells him the real reason for this decision. He later tells him that he wants him for something even more important which is protecting his daughter. He did this because he had noticed how much love was between them.

Yue Avatar and Katara led Aang to the Spirits Oasis to help him to enter the Spirit World. Aang, while in the spirit world had been captured by Zuko, she accompanied Katara and Sokka as they tracked the two of them down on Appa.

On returning to the Oasis, they see that Zhao has captured the moon spirit in its mortal form. He fatally strikes the spirit, causing it to be Injured and at the point of death. This leaves all the water benders practically powerless.

Appearing on the scene, Iroh saw that she had been touched by the Moon Spirit, which reminded her how her life was saved by Tui as a newborn. Once again acting dutifully to her tribe, Yue sacrificed herself to give back the life that the Moon had given her.

Against Sokka’s wishes, she places her hands on the fish and collapses into Sokka’s arms. She closes her eyes and dies in his arms almost immediately. She subsequently appears as a spirit to Sokka, shares a tender kiss with him and a promise to always be with him.

At that moment, the once darkened moon reappears in the sky and Princess Yue became the moon.

Yue’s spirit appeared before Sokka and her father shortly after.

Yue Avatar: After death

She appears several times after her death in the series. Several times following her death, Yue Avatar’s influence on Sokka became evident and even more obvious.

While Team Avatar was trapped in the Foggy Swamp under its spiritual influence, Sokka hallucinated about her. Her hallucination regrettably told him that he failed to protect her. This was a reflection of the guilt he carried about her death. During his time in the Si Wong Desert, Sokka directly referred to the moon as Yue while in an intoxicated state brought about by drinking cactus juice.

When Sokka and Suki nearly kissed while crossing the Serpent’s Pass, a warning glimpse of the moon could be visible in the background. This reminded him of Yue’s presence and his memory of Yue’s death prompted him to refuse the kiss while acting overly protective of Suki.

After Aang was struck down by Princess Azula’s lightning during the Coup of Ba Sing Se, Yue Avatar was able to provide more tangible assistance to Team Avatar: She took it upon herself to meet the Avatar in the Spirit World. She was instrumental before and after her death and is a viable member of the Team Avatar7

The Infamous Sokka Cactus Juice Episode

The Sokka Cactus Juice is one of the episodes that has been met with mixed feelings.

This episode was funny and equally sad one as it is one of the episodes where we truly got a glimpse at the sadness the team was yet to face. It was a tiny bit but it was the beginning of what was to come. Aside from the background story, everything else was proceeding smoothly.

Our heroes were their best selves until that happened. We got a glimpse of what Aang looked like, completely devoid of hope. They say pain builds character and the loss of Appa in the Si Wong desert was the beginning of that for Aang.

The episode where Sokka took Cactus Juice is one that would make anyone laugh as his antiquities in the episode were amplified by a hundred fold.

Sokka, hallucinating on cactus juice said,

“DRINK CACTUS JUICE. IT’LL QUENCH YA! NOTHING’S QUENCHIER. IT’S THE QUENCHIEST!”

I know, right? That makes no sense at all.

Cactus juice is a naturally occurring liquid that is found in certain succulent plants of the Si Wong Desert. This juice is found in cactus plants and in a desolate wasteland devoid of water, it truly does start to look tempting.

However, It contains hallucinogens which cause those who consume it to temporarily fall into a deranged mental state. We can see this in a certain young water tribe warrior who lost his marbles for nearly the whole day.

While wandering around Si Wong Desert, Team Avatar stumbled upon a cactus. Parched and dying of thirst, Sokka quickly slices open the plant, and downs the contents. He and Momo quenches their thirst with the juice inside but at a price. Unbeknownst to them that the liquid contained a powerful hallucinogen; Momo began to soar in the sky aimlessly, while Sokka advertised the dangerous liquid and asked nonsensical questions.

Seeing the effect the juice had on her brother, Katara poured the liquid on the ground before Toph could have a sip as well. The hallucinogenic effects of the juice eventually wore off by the next morning.

Appa’s Capture During The Sokka Cactus Juice Episode

We all know Sokka would eat or drink almost anything but why are they traveling on foot you might ask? Why are they stranded in the Si Wong desert to begin with?

The team met a very strange professor who taught Anthropology at Ba Sing Se University. All of the members of team Avatar at this point had one way or the other, gotten a vacation. Sokka and the rest of the gang come to a very shady location in the desert. The Sand benders spot Appa and the Avatar’s Bison as soon as they land.

The professor tells them that he had been on several expeditions through the desert, all to no avail. He is on a search for the Lost Spirit Library of Wan Shi Tong. The Spirit who knows ten thousand things. Sokka, in much desperation to get an updated map, begins contemplating.

After much speculation and deliberation, Sokka is convinced and declares rather dramatically that he would like to go to the Spirit library for his own vacation. Toph, just joining the team, asks when she gets her own vacation. Sokka tells her “you gotta work here a little longer to qualify.”

The team takes off into the desert, accompanied by the professor. Fascinated by Appa, he launches into a monologue, asking him questions. Appa growls in response to almost everything he says. The professor then laughs, saying if only he spoke Bison. He remarked that the stories the beast could tell.

They get way into the desert on Appa but they eventually have to come down from Appa so he can rest a little bit. They have a picture of the library but are shocked to see that it is buried under hundreds of feet of sand. They all decide to climb in after Toph tells them that the inside of the library is intact and everything is in place.

Toph’s Dilemna Before Sokka’s Cactus Juice

Toph however opts to stay on the outside where she can still feel her way around. She complains that the sand is loose and shifty, which is bad enough. She doesn’t want to go underground. Meanwhile, the team spend time inside the library, eventually offending Wan Shi Tong. This causes him to decide to sink the library. He states that he is taking his knowledge back from the humans.

Just as soon as this begins, Toph senses it from the outside and quickly moves to stop it. She creates a more solid foothold from the shifty desert sand and assumes an earthbending stance which helps her prevent the library from sinking. Although this takes up all her strength and concentration. Right at that moment, rogue sand benders corner Appa. They capture the Bison as Toph struggles to hold the library from sinking. She apologizes to Appa.

Aang and the rest of the team get out of the library safe, only to be met by the news that Appa had been captured. Aang instantly became murderous.

After Si Wong Desert

After arriving in Ba Sing Se, Sokka cautioned the group not to get their hopes up, suggesting highly illogical and supernatural disasters that could still befall them, such as getting attacked by an exploding Fire Nation spoon or finding out that the city had been submerged in a sea of killer shrimp. Toph addressed his paranoia by asking if he had been “hitting the cactus juice again”.

Although the plant Sokka and Momo drank from resembled the fishhook barrel cactus in appearance, it shares the same hallucinogenic properties as the peyote cactus, which is native to southwestern Texas and central Mexico. It can be said to be the original inspiration for the plant and its hallucinogenic properties.

Chef Jenny Dorsey initially proposed to include cactus juice in Avatar: The Last Airbender Cookbook: Official Recipes from the Four Nations. To make a real-life equivalent, she intended for the drink to include alcohol or cannabidiol, but the idea was rejected by Nickelodeon.

Sokka and Yue: The Pair That Was Never Meant to Be

We all know about Sokka and his role in the Team Avatar. It was because of his extensive planning that Aang managed to learn all the elements in time. And it was also his plan to learn about the date of the Solar eclipse. And also its time duration before the arrival of Sozin’s comet.

It was also his plan to attack Firelord Ozai during this time. As he would not be able to Firebend during the duration of the eclipse. Sokka had no bending ability but he still had heart and did not shy away from any kind of problems. Another notable trait in his character arc was his love life. All of us know about Suki and Sokka. But another notable relationship that Sokka had, was with Princess Yue of the Northern Water Tribe.

Team Avatar went to the Northern Water Tribe at the end of the Book 1 of Avatar: The Last Airbender (TV Series). They went there to find a Water Bending master for Aang. It was there that they met Princess Yue for the first time. Sokka and Yue both felt attracted to each other right from the instant they laid eyes on each other. In this article, we will describe their short-lived relationship in complete detail. And how they were separated.

Princess Yue’s History

Princess Yue was born in the Northern Water Tribe to Chief Arnook. But became very ill after her birth. They tried to cure her with several treatments but none of them had any positive effect on Yue’s health. But Chief Arnook prayed to the moon spirit and placed her inside the well of the Moon spirit in an act of desperation.

The Moon spirit cured Yue and gave her a piece of itself. This caused the hair of Yue to change to grey color and her eyes to blue color.

After that Yue grew in the Northern Water Tribe and went on to become an advisor to her father. When Team Avatar came to the tribe Sokka instantly became attracted to her and approached her. Both of them started arranging meetings and grew closer.

Chief Arnook’s Vision

When Yue was born Chief Arnook had a dream that her daughter would go on to become an incarnation of the moon itself. After the vision Yue became ill and as a sign of fate, Arnook took Yue to the Well of the Moon spirit where she was finally cured. It was thought that the Moon spirit had placed a part of itself in Yue. And she subsequently got the name Yue which means “Moon”.

Sokka And Yue’s Relationship

Sokka initially approached Yue when the joint celebrations of the 16th birthday of Princess Yue and the return of Avatar Aang. After this, they met while riding on the boats in the canals of the tribe. It was here that the Princess invited Sokka on a bridge to meet. During this meeting, Sokka presented Yue with a gift. After which Yue said sorry and ran away.

After this meeting, Sokka accepted that this behavior is due to the differences in the social classes. And told Yue the same in their next meeting. To which she replied that this is not the case and kissed Sokka. And revealed that the reason behind her erratic behavior was the fact that she is already engaged to someone else. And showed her betrothal necklace to Sokka as well.

Sokka volunteers for the team that Chief Arnook has assembled in his fight against the attacking Fire Nation army. And it is in this team that Sokka meets Yue’s fiance. He is a warrior named Hahn and the engagement is political as both Hahn and Yue do not have any feeling towards each other. Hahn and Sokka instantly start fighting and oppose each other plans leading to Arnook placing Sokka off the team.

Although Sokka is very angry initially Arnook later reveals that the reason behind his expulsion from the team is that he wants Sokka to protect Yue and has placed Sokka in charge of her safety during this attack.

Moon Spirit’s Murder

Commander Zhao or Admiral Zhao had studied the physical form of the Moon spirit and knew that one of the fish in the Spirit Oasis is the physical form of Moon spirit. As the water tribe derived their power from the moon so Zhao had planned to kill the moon spirit and permanently depower the Water Benders.

He succeeds in doing so even after Iroh’s resistance and goes on to kill the Moon Spirit. This results in erasing the moon itself and leaves all the Water Benders powerless.

Yue’s Role in Revival of The Moon Spirit

Aang returns and bonds with the Ocean spirit and decimates the attacking Fire Nation naval fleet. And meanwhile, Iroh points out to Yue that there is a part of the Moon spirit in herself. After which Yue knows what to do and sacrifices her life to revive the Moon Spirit fulfilling the vision of Chief Arnook.

After she touches the body of the Moon spirit her spirit is absorbed and flies towards the moon allowing it to shine once again. Yue’s departing spirit shares a kiss with Sokka and tells her that she will always be with him showing her love towards Sokka.

Uncle Iroh’s Tea: 14 Of His Favorite Teas

Tea is a commonly served beverage in the World of Avatar. As we have come to note, Uncle Iroh’s tea is one of the best in the whole Avatar world. He is so passionate about it and considers making good tea far more than just boiling leaves and wringing out the juice. Zuko and Iroh on the way to Ba Sing Se encountered a tea seller who sold them bad tea. Iroh, offended, remarks that the tea was just hot leaf juice. Zuko, confused, asks his Uncle if that wasn’t what all tea was.

Uncle Iroh’s Tea Basics

Tea is brewed from a variety of leaves and herbs, which are steeped in hot water prior to consumption. While milk is not typically added to traditional brews, Iroh suggested it as a complementary additive when he attempted to create his own varieties. This is why he was so successful as a tea connoisseur.

Tea is most consumed locally in the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation than any of the other nations. This is also due to its relative accessibility. Compared to the other nations, tea is not as actively consumed in the Water Tribes. This is due to the lack of suitable plants from which to create it. Mostly because Iroh’s time was AG (After Genocide) of the Air Nomads, we can’t exactly add them to the list of the present nations.

However, the Air Nomads are also known to have drunk tea before their genocide. They have their own distinct style of making and consuming tea.

Tea is also known to be consumed in the Spirit World as seen in The Legend of Korra. It was served during Iroh’s tea party that Korra attended in 171 AG.

Tea is a hot beverage that has been enjoyed by individuals across the world throughout the ages. It was consumed as early as 9,829 BG by Wan, Yao, and Jaya atop a fire lion turtle. This is at the beginning of time in the Avatar world as we know it. The most notable tea drinker was Iroh, who enjoyed it on a regular basis. He had a lifelong dream of opening a tea shop, realizing this goal upon opening the Jasmine Dragon in Ba Sing Se.

Several Varieties Of Uncle Iroh’s Tea

Air Nomad style

The Air Nomads had a way of making their own tea. Much like other cultures, Air Nomads must have had preferences as to how they preferred their tea best consumed. Their own style of tea includes the addition of flour. Jinpa, Kyoshi’s friend, served some to Hei-Ran and Atuat using ingredients he borrowed from the Fire Nation Royal Palace kitchen. This can be found in the Rise of Kyoshi

Black

Black teas have a very stronger flavor than most and they are made with withered leaves. In the Jasmine Dragon; Uncle Iroh’s tea shop, there is a blend of this tea called the Metal Brew which was named in honor of Toph Beifong. Iroh claimed that this tea fuels the customer up for the day, but also warned that it also “packs a punch”. I’m sure we don’t need any explanation for that analogy as to why it is named after Toph.

Chi-enhancement (Uncle Iroh’s Tea)

General Fong, in an attempt to get Aang to go into the Avatar state offered Aang chi-enhancing tea. This tea was an attempt that was meant to force him into the Avatar State.

When consumed, chi-enhancing tea is a natural stimulant that improves strength and increases energy tenfold. It is consumed by Earth Kingdom military officials and soldiers, though rather sparingly due to its rarity.

After Aang had drunk this tea per General Fong’s suggestion. While the beverage failed to make Aang enter into the State, he however became extremely hyperactive.

Ginger

Ginger tea is an herbal concoction made from ginger roots and is primarily used for medicinal purposes. This tea is used for its health benefits.

Ginseng

Zuko and Iroh served ginseng tea during their stay at Zhao’s base. Upon being invited to a drink by the commander, Iroh claimed it was his favorite and enjoyed several cups of this tea. He later reaffirmed this view to Zuko upon their departure, claiming the tea was quite good.

Green (Uncle Iroh’s Tea)

Green tea is one of the many teas served in the Jasmine Dragon, where it was called the Ba Sing Quon.

It is enjoyed primarily by citizens of the Earth Kingdom. Its leaves have a refined shape and soothing texture, being subtle in its tastes due to a faster brewing time on lower heat, and was recommended for the refined palettes of the Upper Ring.

Jasmine

Said to be a relatively soothing brew, jasmine tea is a favorite of Iroh’s. He offered it to Zuko immediately after seeing the light in the sky resulting from Aang’s release from the iceberg.

Lychee

This is a variety of tea that is available in Uncle Iroh’s tea shop, this brew is enjoyed by many citizens of the Earth Kingdom, specifically those in Ba Sing Se. It is made from lychee nuts and, due to the fruit’s availability, is commonly found in many parts of the globe.

Oolong

A traditional, partially oxidized tea. It is available at the Jasmine Dragon, a strain of oolong sold under the name Bender Tea. Blended for those who cultivate a much more balanced approach to life, it was named for Aang and Katara.

Red-blooded Nephew (Uncle Iroh’s Tea)

This tea is amber in color, grassy in taste, and very bitter. Iroh does not consider this a very good tea and considered taking it off the Jasmine Dragon’s menu.

Spiced tea

Spiced tea is commonly served in the Fire Nation. It was offered to Team Avatar by Hama after she found the group camping out near her inn. They savored the tea while she told them about her past.

Tapioca

Iroh served Zuko and Aang tapioca tea in the Jasmine Dragon.

Invented by Iroh, this kind of tea is made by stewing tapioca balls until they are soft and tender. The tapioca is subsequently added to a cup of tea, along with a small amount of milk. Both Zuko and Aang disliked the drink, with Zuko spitting his out and Aang commenting that he found it chewy.  At the Jasmine Dragon, this was called the Appa Blend. It is named after Appa.

White

White tea is considered the most delicate of all teas by its connoisseurs, but it also holds a complex undercurrent of intriguing tastes and strength under its natural layers of sweetness. In the Jasmine Dragon, this was called the White Lotus Tile.

White dragon

The white dragon bush is a plant that grows in the eastern Earth Kingdom. According to Iroh, the plant can be used to brew a tea “so delicious, it’s heartbreaking”. It is sometimes confused with the white jade bush due to the similar appearance of the two plants.

White jade

The white jade bush is a plant that grows in the eastern Earth Kingdom. It is sometimes confused with the white dragon bush, due to the two plants having similar appearances. Iroh encountered this plant and got poisoned, trying to make it into tea.

Tea made from the white jade bush can be poisonous to the drinker if brewed incorrectly. When Iroh brewed tea from the white jade plant, he developed a severe rash that would have caused his throat to swell and restricted his breathing. If left untreated, patients may die.. However, it can be prepared for safe consumption, as Ming served a cup of this brew to Iroh when he was detained in the Capital City Prison, stating that she knew how much he liked rare teas.

Sokka’s Boomerang: All You Need To Know

Sokka’s Boomerang: “Boomerang, you do always come back!”

Sokka’s Boomerang was his weapon of choice for a number of seasons; until he got trained in the art of swordsmanship by Piandao. Sokka’s boomerang has pretty much been with us since the very second episode; and was an integral part of Team Avatar’s journey to stop the Hundred Year War. Although often used as a comic plot wherever Sokka was involved, Boomie did save the lives of our heroes on a regular basis.

Such an interesting instrument, let’s take a look at Sokka’s Boomerang, its backstory and even a DIY tip on how to make your own boomerang; (a real one, and not like the crap from the live action film)

Sokka’s Boomerang Specifications

Sokka's Boomerang
Sokka’s Boomerang

Type of Weapon: Sokka’s Boomerang is a throwing weapon. Occasionally he has used it as a melee weapon, but generally he throws; and due to its nature as a boomerang, it comes back after hitting its target.

First Appearance: Sokka’s Boomerang first appeared in the Season One Book One: Water episode ‘The Avatar Returns’. It was the second episode in the entire series.

Last Appearance: Boomerang’s last episode was in the final episode of the series, Book Three: Fire’s episode ‘Sozin’s Comet, Part 4: Avatar Aang’.

Users: Sokka was the primary and only user of Boomerang. He did lose it to a couple of pirates at some point, but they weren’t explicitly shown to have used it in any form.

History of Sokka’s Boomerang

Sokka’s boomerang was given to him by his father Hakoda before he left to fight in the Hundred Year War with the warriors of the Southern Water Tribe. It was one of Sokka’s most prized possessions, and his trademark item.

Sokka once lost his boomerang and stated that it was like “losing a part of himself”. He ended up getting it back, exclaiming “Boomerang! You do always come back!” after Yeh-Lu, the warrior that had found his boomerang, was defeated. Sokka’s boomerang was especially useful in taking down the Fire Nation assassin Combustion Man, who was hell bent on killing Aang. Sokka used his boomerang to defeat Combustion Man when no other member of the group could get close enough to him. The group was hiding behind a pylon, when Sokka threw his boomerang, which hit Combustion Man on his tattoo in the middle of his forehead. This blow stunned the assassin, and blocked his flow of chi to his third eye. When Combustion man tried to firebend again, he blew himself up due to his blocked chi energy.

Unfortunately, he lost his boomerang and his sword while knocking out two firebenders during Sozin’s Comet. Even though he lost his boomerang, he saved his and Toph’s life. A year later, Sokka had obtained a similar boomerang, but we’re not quite sure it is the same boomerang he had previously lost. He used it in order to incapacitate an annoying demonstrator outside Yu Dao.

Forty-two-years prior to Avatar Korra’s arrival in Republic City, Sokka brought up his boomerang during Yakone’s trial at City Hall, in which he referred to as his “trusty boomerang”, and told the story of how he used it to defeat Combustion Man.

How To Make Sokka’s Boomerang

So maybe you want to make Sokka’s boomerang because you’re a huge fan of the franchise and you want to have some of the paraphernalia in your possession. Of course you could go online and try to get one; but trust us when we say that’s an act in futility – unless you’re looking to get ripped off.

It would make an awesome addition to a Sokka costume for Halloween, so why not just make it yourself? Yes, we know what you’re thinking: how? We’ve got you covered. In just a few steps, you’ll have all you need to make your very own Sokka’s boomerang.

Let’s Get Started With The Boomerang

Pretty much nobody on the internet has any arts and crafts tips on how to make Sokka’s boomerang. Sure, there are a lot of pictures and entries on Pinterest, but not many of these entries have actual directions on how to make the boomerang.

So in a nutshell, people have made it but no one really knows how to. So here we will show you how to make the boomerang; exactly like the one from the animated show, and like we said, nothing from the crap movie.

Step 1: Cut Out The Basic Shape

First things first, you should cut out the basic shape of the boomerang. It’s kind of like a large “L”, but with even length; or better yet, a spread out “V”. You should also remember that if you’re going to get the exact look, you should make one part a little thinner than the other; as we see below

Sokka's Boomerang
Sokka’s Boomerang

After this, you should then mark where the two holes go. We recommend using wood, preferably a 3/4 inch thick common board. You can trace a picture of Sokka’s Boomerang from Google so you can get the perfect shape. After that, drill the two holes we previously marked, and then you can light sand the shape to smoothen it out.

If you aren’t so crafty with tracing, you could print the picture of his boomerang from Google, and then cut it out. This will help you get the right shape.

Step 2: Give The Edges A Proper Sanding

Up next, you should sand the edges. There is a reason for this. If you notice from the animated series, Sokka’s Boomerang has edges that look sharp and are almost blade-like in texture. So in order for us to get that same look, we should give the dges a sanding. To get the exact look, you should sand the edges on an angle, probably 90 degrees; and then do the same for the other side so it is all even and rounded. But remember that you should only sand the edges on the outside, and not on the inside. Leave that bit untouched. After that, you can proceed to cut that notch that forms at the tip.  little itsy bitsy notch on the tip.

Step 3: It’s Time To Paint

To keep up with the color of the original Sokka’s boomerang, we’ll be using blue and white colors. You could opt for something like aquamarine or even turquoise. Or just regular plain blue.

So first, let’s paint the outside of the boomerang’s edges white. This gives it the look of a sharp blade; and that way we can simulate metal, even though this is pretty much wood and paper. After we are done with the outside edges, we can now move on to the next item on the order. But before that, let’s ensure that we have masked off the white paint. You can do this after it is all dried up. Afterward, proceed to paint every other part of the boomerang with our blue color. Spread the blue coat thinly so it doesn’t coagulate on top of the body. Once this blue paint is dry as well, go ahead and spray a clear coat on it.

And VOILA. You have your very own Sokka’s boomerang. You’re one step to that perfect cosplay.

Did Toph Marry? (Avatar)- The Details of Her Relationships

Toph Beifong, a blind earth bender, and later metal bender is the only daughter of the Beifong family. They are known as one of the richest, if not the richest family in the whole world. We will answer the question of if Toph Did Marry anyone at some point.

Several stories have gone on about what happens to our favorite characters after we last see them on the animation series. There are comic book issues that address some of these concerns but not directly with respect to who Toph married.

As far as we know, Toph married no one. Her two children Lin and Suyin, were born out of wedlock. We do know that Lin’s father is a man named Kanto. We recall Toph saying in the Legend of Korra series that it didn’t work out between them. This issue caused animosity between Toph and Lin.

Having Lin Beifong

Toph gave birth to Lin twenty years after the conclusion of the hundred-year war. Her daughter inherited her Earth bending abilities. She also trained her to master metal bending and even seismic sense. This is a skill that Toph perfected due to her lack of sight.

Although, Toph feels like Lin never really fully mastered all the key elements to these skills. Toph and Lin share similar personalities, and Korra even referred to Toph as an older and crankier version of Lin. Both of them can be blunt and stubborn per the occasion, and Toph proudly referred to herself as the original Beifong.

The family, due to his Toph must have handled them growing up, eventually breaks apart. After twenty years of no contact, Toph and Lin found common ground and reconciled.

Father Talk Was Off Limits

Despite Toph’s good intentions as a single mother, she refused to discuss Lin’s father with her, which weighed heavily on her daughter. She felt that this was a way to protect her daughter from the harm she didn’t need to face. This did the exact opposite of what she intended, instead of what Toph aimed at, protecting her child. She sucked badly at parenting, probably due to her own parents and their horrible parenting.

Despite this, Lin continued to have respect for her mother as the Chief of Police. She did however, maintain her anger at Suyin being the cause of Toph’s premature retirement. Their relationship became strained, and by 154 AG, they had ceased communicating with each other.

When they reunited by chance in 174 AG to save a captured Suyin and her family, Toph acted casually with her daughter. This inadvertently did a good number on her nerves. Lin finally unloaded on Toph after Bolin received an answer to the question of who her father was.

She blamed Toph for never knowing or caring why she angered her so much. As Lin stated she wanted nothing more to do with her after saving their family, Toph solemnly accepted the words, stating that she would agree to it if that was what Lin desired. Bad parenting, right?

However, after they had successfully saved everyone, Lin apologized for her harsh words. Something that was very unlikely to happen was Toph admitting that she had not been the best mother. She maintained that in the respite of this, she was nonetheless proud of how she had ended up with great daughters.

She also said that it was enough for her to know that Lin did not hate her; Lin accepted her words and shared a small hug.

Their relationship became a lot better after this event.

Did Toph Marry? Having Suyin Beifong

In 126 AG, Toph had her second daughter, Suyin, with another man as she would later let us know. Her first relationship did not work out with Kanto. We, however, do not know the identity of Suyin’s father.

Suyin also inherited earth bending and mastery of the sub-skill of metal bending, although Toph felt that Suyin never quite mastered all the key elements of these skills as well. However, this should be expected from a bending master. Finding someone that cuts it must be next to impossible for her.

Did Toph Marry? She Wanted to Be Nothing Like Her Parents

Due to how she grew up, Toph must have subconsciously decided to do the exact opposite of what her parents did. She gave Suyin and her sister Lin all the freedom that she did not have while growing up. It was clear that this was a bad move, and it became even clearer when Suyin got arrested by Lin for being the wheelman for the Terra Triad.

Lin apprehending Suyin and brought her to the station to her mother. Toph tore up the report and sent her second daughter to live with her grandparents. She must have rethought the decision to let her have unlimited freedom at that point. Her best decision was to send her to where she would not have the freedom she had gotten so used to.

A year later, Toph retired, while Suyin went on to build the city of Zaofu. They both reconciled from the incident, and Toph would often visit before she went off in search of enlightenment. Lin was not aware of this and blamed Suyin for her recklessness, causing Toph to retire earlier than she needed to. An angry Lin held on to this for about two decades, ostracizing herself from two of her family members.

While she was residing in the Foggy Swamp, a spiritual center for energy and life, Toph kept an eye on Zaofu. It was here that she learned that Suyin and her family were taken prisoner by Kuvira in 174 AG. Toph traveled toward the metal city in order to rescue them. Upon being reunited with her youngest daughter, Toph let herself be hugged and readily returned the embrace. After successfully escaping the prison, Toph noted how proud she was to have such great daughters as Suyin and Lin.

Toph did not marry anyone, but she did turn out with amazing daughters that ended up being befitting of wearing the Beifong name.

Toph Was Only Nice Sometimes

While Toph is not often openly kind, she showed a great deal of warmness and cared only toward her only granddaughter, Opal. During her visits to Zaofu, Toph would often tell her tales from her past.

In 174 AG, when Toph went to rescue her family, Opal rushed to hug her, an action Toph did not resist, although she cut it short and moved to hold Opal’s hands instead. This is something that Toph would not do to anyone else. Appraising her granddaughter, she fondly noted how much she had grown, though questioned her judgment when learning that Juicy was her flying bison and Bolin her boyfriend.

Toph is one of the characters that had children with bending skills that were passed on to the next generation.

In this article, we’ll be covering two of the most popular characters of the franchise. They are members of the original Team Avatar; and perhaps are the two most cosplayed characters ever. Here’s your Avatar Costume Guide for Aang and Katara.

Avatar Costume: How To Dress Like Aang

Dressing like Aang might look like a lot of work; but it is an Avatar costume that you can pull off easily with the right materials. So, before we get on with what you need in your Avatar costume wardrobe, let’s dive into the character himself so you can get a sense of his type of person. After all, how a person dresses usually determines what kind of person they are.

About Aang

Aang is a merrymaking kid, adventurous and perhaps a little naive as well. Possessing a keen respect for personal independence and life, he does not eat meat and is at times very reluctant to engage in conflict. Constantly craving the stimulation of new surroundings and people, he is often distracted and will take detours much to the annoyance of his friends and foes.

Discouraged by the weight of his responsibilities, Aang often longed for the simplicity of those people’s lives. This did not stop him from building an impressive collection of friends and contacts, spanning the four nations. A love for animals drew his attention to the different variations found in each region. Even with a carefree facade, the weight of his responsibilities was burdensome to Aang. The reality of being the last Airbender left him without any realistic peers. He often felt alone. It was these struggles that pushed Aang to nurture his relationships with others as without them; he would be very much alone in his role.

Aang Avatar Costume: Items You Will Need

Avatar Costume

These are all the items you’ll need to recreate Aang’s iconic Avatar costume, as seen from Seasons 1 to 2, and then in the latter parts of Season 3

Aang’s Avatar costume options can either be in partial clothing, as seen in the final battle with Fire Lord Ozai or on the Day of the Invasion; or in full clothing, as seen in the rest of the series. Aang can be played by both mle and female cosplayers, as he is a very versatile character. The bald cap will help to simulate the monk haircut, so you don’t have to worry about cutting your hair.

If you’re going for a look with partial clothing then you have the choice of going shirtless and painting on his symbols or wearing just a sash over a bare chest. Then you can just paint on his head arrow symbol. Brown, wide legged pants with either colored tights or tall boots will take care of what little clothing is required for this look.

Avatar Costume: How To Dress Like Katara

Avatar Costume

Dressing like Katara looks like it’s a big task, considering how intricate water tribe attire looks. But where it might look like a lot of work; it is in reality a very easy Avatar costume that you can pull off with the right materials. So, before we get on with what you need in your Avatar costume wardrobe, let’s dive into the character herself so you can get a sense of  the sort of person Katara is. After all, how a person dresses usually determines what kind of person they are.

About Katara

If you don’t know who Katara is, you’re missing out on a really amazing anime heroine. She is a main character from the popular Nickelodeon animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. As a highly skilled waterbender, she has the ability to telekinetically control water and ice. Along with her brother Sokka and Aang, they embark on a quest to help put an end to the destruction caused by the Fire Nation. Get the look of Katara with this complete costume guide.

Katara, from Avatar: The Last Airbender, is the true definition of power. Nothing was simply handed to her on a silver platter. Still, she persevered, trained, and became the deadliest waterbender in the entire world! From a very young age, she was faced with tragedy. Her mother was murdered at a young age and then her father left to fight in the war against the Fire Nation.

This left Katara devastated. As a result, she became extremely protective of her friends and family, especially Aang and her brother Sokka. She quickly learned to take charge, becoming strong willed and compassionate. She worked hard to master waterbending even more than Avatar himself. Later, she became the world’s strongest healer and after Aang’s passing became the waterbending trainer of the next Avatar, Korra.

Katara Avatar Costume: Items You Will Need

These are all the items you’ll need to recreate Katara’s iconic Avatar costume, as seen from Seasons 1 to 2, and then in the latter parts of Season 3:

Cosplay Katara’s minimalistic costume with the iconic Water Tribe Outfit. Next, wear the Contestant Wig and signature Katara Necklace. Finally, complete her look with Elastic Legging, Fingerless Gloves, and Women’s Knee High Boots. Now that you have all of these items; dress up and go forth to become the best Waterbender in the world.

There’s no cooler power than bending water and ice to your will. Katara, with thousands of hours of practice, was able to do just that. Practicing her moves will make your Katara cosplay even more convincing! You’ll need her Water Tribe Outfit along with Elastic Legging, Fingerless Gloves, and Women’s Knee High Boots. Unless you have hair to match Katara’s style, add a basic wig (as seen in the item list above) and her signature Water Tribe Necklace (also linked in the items list) to make the cosplay as accurate as possible.

It’s also important to  bear in mind that Katara is extremely caring and protective of her friends and family. And that’s who you should bring into the fold for this cosplay. Katara would make the perfect character to dress up as alongside an Aang cosplay player; especially considering their relationship in the series. You and a significant other can decide to pair up and stun onlookers as one of the most powerful couples in the world.

Since the very beginning of The Legend of Korra, we are aware our dear friend Aang is dead. We all have a special nostalgia for the first avatar we met. We ended up with a lot of questions after The Last Airbender finale but with the sequel’s release, we can grasp a lot of information regarding the world of Avatar and answer some questions about our dear protagonists. Today we are focusing on Avatar Aang’s Family Tree and how it grew.

Avatar Aang’s Family Tree Back to The Original Show

As we recall on the events from ATLA during the 100 years Aang was frozen in an iceberg, the Fire Nation attacked the air nomads committing a genocide that almost exterminated all the nomads but Aang. From the first moment, Aang realizes that he yields a heavyweight on his shoulders. He was the last member of a whole culture. Even though this seemed like a secondary problem, once the 100 years’ war ended Aang started to create a family to reconstruct the airbenders.

Along with the series we get to see a sparkling love between Aang and Katara. When they first meet in the Southern Water Tribe they start an innocent friendship that evolves with time into a complex relationship. Once fire lord Ozai was defeated we can watch Aang and Katara finally kissing and starting a long-lasting relationship.

The Legend of Korra and The New Family Ties

Once the Legend of Korra started we got more details about our friend’s doings. Aang was dead. However, he made sure he had decent offspring. We can see an older Katara who at this point has seen both his husband the Avatar and his brother Sokka. We can also see the many children she had with Aang; three children, Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin.

Bumi

Bumi was the first and eldest of Aang’s children. He was born without bending abilities which made him somehow distant from his father who was focused on affairs like his avatar duties and preserving the air culture. Bumi was a military officer who got to the position of commander of the Second Division of the United Forces. Even though Bumi lived his entire life as a nonbender after the Harmonic Convergence he got airbending abilities.

Kya

Kya is the second of Aang and Katara’s children. She is a waterbender who traveled the world earning herself a name as a famous healer. We can infer from the series Kya had a closer relationship with her mother. She settled down in the Southern Water Tribe with Katara. As we could watch in Korra’s second season Kya and Bumi felt kind of left behind in comparison with Tenzin, who was an airbender, by their father. One bond she shares with her father is her spiritualism. Kya can feel changes in the auras and locate people.

Tenzin

Tenzin was Aang and Katara’s third child. As some say third time’s a charm and Tenzin, the third son was an airbender. As we can see during Korra’s second season in comparison with his brothers Tenzin did have a different relationship with his father. As we know, Aang was focused on his avatar duties, along with the recovery of the air culture. Tenzin could spend more time with Aang since he trained him in the air customs along with airbending.

Avatar Aang’s Family Tree Grows Further With His Grandkids

Tenzin is the only son who is already a father. We can see Tenzin took very seriously the responsibility of continuing with the air culture. From the very introduction of the character, we also meet his wife Pema, who is a nonbender but with whom he has four children: Jinora, Ikki, Meelo, and Rohan. Since they’re the last airbenders before the Harmonic Convergence they are very devoted to the air nomad’s culture.

Jinora

Jinora is the elder of Tenzin and Pema’s children. She is the youngest full airbender known before the Harmonic Convergence and has a quiet personality along with a natural affinity with spirits. She became Avatar Korra’s spiritual guide during the spirit book of the series and have a good relationship with all her relatives even though her siblings upset her sometimes.

Ikki

is Tenzin and Pema’s middle child. She has an outgoing personality, really relatable to air nomads’ stereotypes of joyfulness and easygoingness. She dominated air bending and even though during The Legend of Korra she was not a full airbender she mastered abilities like the air scooter created by her grandfather.

Meelo

Meelo is the first boy of the gang and he is completely hilarious. Even though he is young we can see him using airbending techniques during all his appearances and also working as a comic relief every time he appeared on the screen. Behind Meelo’s childish and goofy personality we can find a very talented artist and an adaptive learner who was able to learn how to train not one lemur but every lemur on the Southern Air Temple.

Rohan

Rohan is the youngest of Aang and Katara’s grandchildren. When we are first introduced to Pema she is pregnant with Rohan in the first season of the Legend of Korra. She gave birth to him during an attack of the equalists to the Air Island. As the Legend of Korra ended Rohan was still a baby so we do not have information regarding his abilities or personality but at the moment of today, he is the youngest of Aang’s progeny.

Final Thoughts On Avatar Aang’s Family Tree

When we first met Aang in the first show he was just a child himself. We joined him during his adventures to end the 100-year war and defeat the Fire Nation but as we said, after those events, his life continued and he had to focus on different problems. Fortunately, Aang found love in Katara, and together they formed a big and exotic family.

The weight of maintaining themselves a whole culture got a little bit easier after the Harmonic Convergence where several non bender citizens acquired new airbending abilities, restoring the balance between the four elements. We don’t know if Avatar Aang’s family tree could still get bigger but we are sure he would love to see the family he began.

Why Does Azula Have Blue Fire In Avatar The Last Airbender

Azula is one of the most well-received characters of Avatar: The Last Airbender (TV Series). Although she is an antagonist, she is still a very formidable foe. And has tested the Team Avatar to their limits whenever she has faced the team.

She is born as a fire prodigy and is a very skilled fire bender even by the age of 9. This talent had gravitated her father Firelord Max Ozai towards her, who believed that she is destined for greatness. But one thing that we notice in Azula’s Firebending is that her fire is blue in color as opposed to the orange color of other firebenders. In this article, we will try to uncover this mystery and try to answer that “why does Azula have blue fire”.

There have been many fan theories that try to answer the question that “why does Azula have blue fire”. We will list some of the best possible fan theories in this regard. But sadly we will have to rely on these theories for the answer. As there has been no official explanation behind this mystery. And the creators of the show have left it to the audiences and fans in general to try and answer this strange phenomenon.

The Blue Flame Is Hotter Theory

One of the most common and well-received theories about “why does Azula have blue fire” is the scientific explanation behind her blue fire. According to this theory, the reason behind Azula’s blue fire is that the writers wanted to show that she is more powerful than Zuko and other firebenders. As we all know, Blue Fire is hotter than the normal orange-colored fire, Azula must be at a different power level than all other Firebenders.

This is also believable because Azula has showcased her power in all of her appearances. And she dominates all of her opponents. And this domination is not only related to her firebending but also her personality as well. When she took over the city of Ba Sing Se, the Dai Li and even Long Feng bowed down to her because of her domination over all of them.

But this theory does have its flaws. And if we are to believe this theory, we would need to assume that Azula is the most powerful Firebender. And is even more powerful than the Firelord Max Ozai himself. This is definitely not the case is our opinion. Ozai is more powerful than Azula, and her Uncle Iroh is also on a different level of power compared to the young princess.

Source of Firebending Theory

After Zuko joins the Team Avatar, he loses his ability to bend fire. The reason behind this is that the source of his firebending ability is his drive to capture the Avatar. And restore his lost honor and place in the Fire Nation. After he abandons his desire to capture Aang and accepts his destiny by joining Aang. He loses the source of his power as he no longer wants to capture the Avatar anymore. And he goes on to search for a new source of power, leading him and Aang to find the last surviving dragons.

Similarly, if we analyze the source of power behind Azula’s ability to Firebend. We find out that it is the constant and extreme hatred towards her mother that allows her to firebend. In her own words, Azula says that her mother only saw a monster in her and loved Zuko more than her. And all of the rebellious activities and bullying that Azula did in her childhood were only her way of getting her mother’s attention.

Positive Points of This Theory

This theory states that the reason behind “why does Azula have blue fire” is this hatred inside of her. This hatred is so powerful and extreme that it allows Azula to produce a fire that is more powerful than all other firebenders. This theory successfully rectifies the issues faced in the first one as according to this theory. Azula might not be the most powerful Firebender but she produces a fire that is more powerful than others.

Firebending is not only about producing a fire. It is so much more taking different factors into account. These factors include the stamina of the fire bender, and his or her ability to continue firebending for extended periods of time. It also takes into account the discipline of the fire bender. And if we take all these factors into account, we safely say that although Azula produces a fire more powerful than others she is not the most powerful fire bender. But she is evidently second only to her father Max Ozai and her Uncle Iroh. And she is a more powerful fire bender than Zuko as well.

Azula’s Personality

This final theory answers the question that “why does Azula have blue fire” by relating the blue fire to her personality. This theory states that as we all know that Azula is very precise and focused. She is also very disciplined in the art of fire bending, which allows her to form lightning at will.

Even when she is not using her fire-bending ability, she is still an elite fighter. She is an expert in different fighting arts and her speed, agility, and stamina are unmatched. And she is able to easily best any of her opponents including the members of the Team Avatar as well. She also defeated Suki in a one-on-one fight very easily due to her excellent abilities.

This personality of her allows her to produce blue-colored fire correlating with her strong and burning personality. Her main aim was to dominate everyone around her. And this dominating personality combined with other traits of her personality allowed her to produce a fire more powerful than others.

Conclusion

We have covered the most popular theories explaining the reason behind Azula’s blue-colored fire in detail. If you like this article. then you should definitely visit our website www.avatarfactor.com to read other interesting articles on the Avatar universe as well.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is an alternate retelling of Hiromu Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist manga that is closer to the source material than the previous 2003 adaptation, this time covering the entire story.

“In order for something to be obtained, something of equal value must be lost.”

Alchemy is bound by this Law of Equivalent Exchange—something the young brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric only realize after attempting human transmutation: the one forbidden act of alchemy. They pay a terrible price for their transgression—Edward loses his left leg, Alphonse his physical body. It is only by the desperate sacrifice of Edward’s right arm that he is able to affix Alphonse’s soul to a suit of armor. Devastated and alone, it is the hope that they would both eventually return to their original bodies that gives Edward the inspiration to obtain metal limbs called “automail” and become a state alchemist, the Fullmetal Alchemist.

Three years of searching later, the brothers seek the Philosopher’s Stone, a mythical relic that allows an alchemist to overcome the Law of Equivalent Exchange. Even with military allies Colonel Roy Mustang, Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye, and Lieutenant Colonel Maes Hughes on their side, the brothers find themselves caught up in a nationwide conspiracy that leads them not only to the true nature of the elusive Philosopher’s Stone, but their country’s murky history as well. In between finding a serial killer and racing against time, Edward and Alphonse must ask themselves if what they are doing will make them human again… or take away their humanity.

Set in a fantasy world, just like Avatar, The Seven Deadly Sins is a compelling story that aims to touch on very many social themes. This is one of the things that makes it a top anime like Avatar. It is also called Nanatsu no Taizai

In a world similar to the European Middle Ages, the feared yet revered Holy Knights of Britannia use immensely powerful magic to protect the region of Britannia and its kingdoms. However, a small subset of the Knights supposedly betrayed their homeland and turned their blades against their comrades in an attempt to overthrow the ruler of Liones. They were defeated by the Holy Knights, but rumors continued to persist that these legendary knights, called the “Seven Deadly Sins,” were still alive. Ten years later, the Holy Knights themselves staged a coup d’état, and thus became the new, tyrannical rulers of the Kingdom of Liones.

Based on the best-selling manga series of the same name, Nanatsu no Taizai follows the adventures of Elizabeth, the third princess of the Kingdom of Liones, and her search for the Seven Deadly Sins. With their help, she endeavors to not only take back her kingdom from the Holy Knights, but to also seek justice in an unjust world.

Spontaneous Human Combustion: a chaotic phenomenon that has plagued humanity for years, randomly transforming ordinary people into flaming, violent creatures known as Infernals. While Infernals make up the first-generation accounts of Human Combustion, the second and third generations became known as pyrokinetics—people gifted with the ability to manipulate and control their flames while remaining human. To combat the Infernal threat and discover the cause, the Tokyo Armed Forces, Fire Defense Agency, and Holy Church of Sol produced their answer: the Special Fire Force.

Young and eager third-generation pyrokinetic Shinra Kusakabe, nicknamed Devil’s Footprints for his explosive ability to ignite his feet at will, becomes a member of the lively Special Fire Force Company 8. Upholding the brigade’s duty to extinguish the blazing Infernals and lay their souls to rest, Shinra is determined to become a hero who will save the lives of those threatened by the flame terror.

However, this is not the hero’s game Shinra imagined. The Fire Force is a fractured mess of feuding brigades, abnormal Infernal sightings are increasing all over Tokyo, and a shadowy group is claiming to have answers to the strange fire that caused the death of Shinra’s family 12 years ago. Faced with many obstacles within and outside the Fire Force, Shinra fights to uncover the truth behind the burning mysteries that have kept him in the dark.

Obviously, the similarities between Avatar and Kung Fu Panda are so clear. First of all, Aang and Po Ping clearly have quite a lot in common.  They both have the same sense of global responsibility bestowed on them. Where Po is chosen as the next Dragon Warrior, the protector of his kingdom; who will save it from many dangers. But Po really doubts himself all through the movie, much like Aang does.

Eventually, it is his friends that give him the confidence boost he needs; and help him actualize his full potential. It is interesting to note that these friends did not even like him in the beginning. This is very similar to how Team Avatar is essential to Aang’s fulfillment of his role as the Avatar. The themes and the relationships in Kung Fu Panda definitely make it one of the top movies like Avatar.

Nahuel And The Magic Book

One of our favorite movies like Avatar on this list, Nahuel and the Magic Book is a stellar piece. The Last Unicorn was released in 1982, and was a joint production effort between three countries; Japan, America and Britain. This movie, like most of the other movies like Avatar, places its focus on the power of friendship and love. The themes of friendship which are evident in helping those who are the last of their kind feel like they belong; are exactly what makes The Last Unicorn very similar to the setup of Avatar.

One of the prevailing themes in Avatar was on how Aang was a person with pacifist ideals. As an airbender, he was prone to avoiding confrontations. But this conflicted with the fact that to end the Hundred Year War; he would have to resort to force and possibly even murder when facing Fire Lord Ozai. This is the same dilemma that Arjun: The Warrior Prince faces.

The Western movie entertainment scene may not be familiar with the great Indian epic Mahabharata; which is the basis and inspiration for Arjun: The Warrior Prince. The epic tells the story of Arjun, a brave prince, as well as his journey to become a great warrior. Similar to the settings of most movies like Avatar, this is a journey that begins in his childhood.

Aang and Arjun’s stories are quite similar – and this goes beyond the fact that their names both start with an A. Aang was an airbender who went through great hardships to make peace with the fact that ultimately, he would have to give up his peaceful ideals and fight in order to save the world. Arjun faced a similar situation himself.

Just like Aang and the many protagonists in the list of movies like Avatar; Moana is the chosen one. She is entrusted with the responsibility or job of reuniting the goddess Te Fiti with a relic; a relic that she doesn’t know next to nothing about. At first it seems like a simple drop off and that all she will need is confidence. But things quickly take a turn for the unexpected.

Things don’t exactly go Moana’s way. Let’s not even talk about the fact that she has her plans delayed; as she is forced into a corner and has to seek out the demi god Maui. She needs his help in order to save her village; and by extension, the world.

The two worlds in Moana and Avatar might be a sharp contrast of one another. However, they are unified in the sense that they are about overcoming hardships; as well as doing what it takes to protect the lives of the ones you love and care for.

In a world full of strong and bulky, vicious Vikings, Hiccup is considered a weakling within his community. He really fears having to take the throne as village chief; or follow any of his father’s footsteps. Afterall, they are very big footsteps indeed, compared to his rather small ones. But it is more about him being afraid of not living up to his father’s legacy.

Instead, Hiccup seeks to forge his own path, much different from the Viking ways. Killing dragons is not his thing. However, through a series of unbelievable events, Hiccup finds himself face to face with a dragon. It isn’t just any dragon; it’s a Nightfury – one of the most vicious dragons in existence.

But instead of killing the dragon in true Viking fashion; Hiccup names it, heals it and they become friends. They eventually go on many adventures together, and even stop the war between Vikings and Dragons. The relationship between Toothless and Hiccup is very similar to the relationship and bond that Appa and Aang share. This movie takes place during ancient Egypt. It tells audiences about the biblical story of Prince Moses, who was born in a life of luxury but chose to become a savior of the downtrodden. He stood up against his brother and eventually led to the freedom of all his country’s slaves.

Moses standing up to the royal family is very similar to the way Zuko stood up against the Fire Family and the Fire Nation. He joined Aang and together they brought the Hundred Year War to an end.

Ramayana: The Legend Of Prince Rama

Very much like Aang, Lord Rama was a savior born to his people in order to fulfill a prophecy. He was born to free his people from the evil grasps of the Demon Lord; Raavana. In his quest to fulfill his destiny, he and his brother Laxman travel across the sea; along with Hanuman, his loyal disciple.

Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama also touches on various topics, such as the fight between good vs evil; as well as right vs wrong, and it explains them in an easy to understand and simple manner.  It is also a very good showcase on the Indian culture. And anyone who is interested in the people, traditions and the culture of India is advised to take some time out to see this movie.

10 True and Hilarious Avatar Memes

When Netflix decided to air Avatar: Last Airbender on their platform in 2020, an air of excitement filled the internet. Most realized that they had grossly missed the franchise. It was a fun way of walking down memory lane to when it was first created. It was agreed that the animation achieved the evergreen status as it trended for days on end on Twitter.

Well, something like this cannot go through twitter without their sets of creative minds coming up with something that lightened up the lockdown mood across the globe.

Here are a few that came into circulation during the lockdown.

Azula’s Quarantine Haircut

Azula is probably up there as the to-watch character in Avatar.

Her ruthlessness and cruelty are only second to that of Ozai, her father. However, we see a very insecure side to her as she began to distrust the people around her. This got even worse when everyone left her alone when it was obvious that she was gradually going mad.

Ozai made her the Fire Lord when he took up the position of the Pheonix king. This power went into her head, and she finally loses it. One of her defiant acts was cutting her hair after she went paranoid and fired her chambermaid, claiming she was trying to kill her. Hence, the meme.

Sneak Attack

In the anime world, the characters belt out the name or nature of their moves while executing them. It looks pretty cool while watching it. But it certainly does not work in the animation world of ATLA. If it were any other movie, it would have been fine. But screaming out ‘sneak attack’ while attacking pretty much defeats its purpose, doesn’t it?

Everything Changed When 2020 Attacked

The ingenuity of certain memes can be so baffling. Not only is this perfect, it truly depicts how the lockdown and COVID wreaked havoc on the plans of a lot of people.

The Last Airbender Movie Meme

Well, every true fan who has seen the Last Airbender movie genuinely hates it. So this meme is absolutely perfect as all unite in their hatred for the movie to bring up this meme.

There was a lot of buzz and excitement from the series camp when the Last Airbender movie was in the works. The production and the all-around output did not meet the high expectations fans had for it.
So if we were to call the ATLA series our plans, the ATLA movie is definitely a perfect depiction of 2020 with its slow and boring storyline.

Another Last Airbender Movie Meme

Well, this is another meme throwing jabs at the Last Airbender movie. This was definitely the face of most of the fans as they witnessed the slow-paced and boring storyline of the Last Airbender movie. If you haven’t watched the movie before, this is a clear indication that you should not go close to it. But if you’re curious as to what it is all about, go right ahead and dive in. Just remember this one thing: curiosity always kills the cat.

Even 2020 can’t take the tea out of Uncle Iroh.

Well, there are people, like uncle Iroh, who are not fazed by circumstances. They would still relax and have that wonderful cup of tea even if the world was burning down. Iroh spent the whole series trying to get Prince Zuko to take a chill pill and take some tea to relax his nerves. Certain people fit into this Iroh narrative as they made even more money during the pandemic as they utilized their online prowess calmly and chilled with a cup of tea.

Yue’s Sacrifice

Yue, the Northern water tribe’s Princess, was Sokka’s first lover. The Moon Spirit gave her a second chance at life when she was younger. She was born sick, so she needed something miraculous to survive. The moon spirit gave her some of its life force, making her strong.

However, the Fire nation attacked the Northern Water Tribe and killed the Moon Spirit, the fish in the meme, in the process, causing the benders to lose their powers. Yue decided that she had to give her life spirit back to the Moon Spirit and, in turn, restore her people’s water-bending powers. This meant that her relationship with Sokka came to an abrupt end as well as her life.

This perfectly depicted what a terrible year 2020 was. The humor is mildly dark, but it is relatable in the least.

All seemed to go perfectly well, like the beginning of 2020, until Toph threw a wrench into their plans. Cabbage Man and His Cabbages

The cabbage man joke was one that could not get old in the Avatar: Last Airbender series. All the man wants to do is to make his living by selling his wonderful cabbages in a cart. However, he runs into the Avatar and his team everywhere he goes and ends up with a destroyed cart as well as ruined cabbages. Of course, they did not mean to destroy the old man’s cabbages; it still doesn’t excuse the fact that a person’s source of livelihood was being ruined at every turn.

Zuko Fieldtrip

After Zuko joined up with Team Avatar in book three, everyone went on individual missions with Zuko. For example, Aang and Zuko went on a trip to get their fire bending up to par, Katara and Zuko went on a revenge mission on her mother’s killer, Sokka, and Zuko went to save Sokka’s dad from a highly guarded prison.

The only one who didn’t get a ‘field trip” with Zuko was Toph. She pointed out that she wanted one as well, but who wouldn’t? So everyone got a benefit of a sort when each got back from their trip with Zuko. It is even more fitting that an image with Toph clinging to Zuko was used.

Avatar Symbols: How They Represent The Bending Arts

The Avatar Symbols represent the Four Bending Nations and the elements they bend. They are fire, air, water and earth.

Bending is the ability to manipulate an element. It is essential to many aspects in the regular lives of the people of the world. There are five bending forms, although four of them are major; as they bend a specific to a particular physical element; while the fifth bending form manipulates the energy within the human body. Also, the only time where anyone has been able to bend more than one element at a time has been with the Avatar; as he or she has the ability to practice all the five bending forms.

The four bending forms, as depicted in the Avatar symbols, are based on four classic elements. There is water, earth, fire, and air. Each element is manipulated through certain martial art styles that are similar to the qualities of the element itself.

Bending is traditionally performed through the motions of one’s hands and feet, but certain benders are able to effectively manipulate their element with only minimal movement of their body, such as by using just their head or torso. In some cases, benders are able to perform their bending without the aid of any physical movement at all. Instead they use sheer focus and force of will. This skill is known as psychic bending.

The Four Nations

Avatar Symbols

Each element is associated with a particular nation in the world. That is why there are Four Nations. The Water Tribe corresponds with waterbending and is split into two; the Northern and Southern Water Tribes residing at the two Poles. The Earth Kingdom is associated  with earthbending. The Fire Nation associates with firebending. The Air Nomads are synonymous with airbending. There are other bending groups however, such as the Sun Warriors with firebending, and the Foggy Swamp Tribe for waterbending.

Energybending

Avatar Symbols: Energybending

The Energybending symbol is a combination of all the Avatar symbols; a depiction of how energybending focuses on the inner energy of the human body. It does not focus on elements like the other bending forms.

The fifth bending art, energybending, is unlike the other four in that little physical action is required to direct the bending itself. The four elemental bending arts are all dependent on the energy, or chi, within the human body, relying on its flow through the body to manipulate a specific element. A person is able to bend when they extend the influence of their chi beyond the body to interact with the environment. Energybending, on the other hand, is concerned with the manipulation of the energy itself and is able to remove or grant bending abilities

Avatar Symbols: Airbending

Avatar Symbols: Airbending

This is one of the Avatar Symbols, and it represents the bending form that is airbending.

Airbending is the bending art used by the Air Nomads. The sky bison or the flying bison were the original airbenders, and after the Lion Turtles stopped giving people bending; humans learnt from them. As seen in the depiction of the Avatar symbols, airbending is a free bending form. It concentrates on speed and evasion, forgoing a strong offense for a greater defense.

Though it apparently looks to be lacking fatal finishing moves, airbending is the most dynamic of all the bending arts. As air is the element of freedom, airbenders use their capability to bend unrestricted by the ground or any other factors in the environment,  using their own momentum as a weapon; evading attacks with astounding agility to tire their opponents out or building up massive inertia for explosive gusts of wind to make their counterattacks finishing moves.

When they do resort to physical confrontation, airbenders can harness the immense, intangible power of wind. Airbenders also use a flight technique by operating a glider and using the air to provide thrust and lift. Every element that is a part of the Avatar symbols has a direct bending opposite. Airbending’s direct opposite is earthbending and the confrontational style that serves as the bending form’s foundation.

Airbending also has subskills, which are flight and spiritual projection. However, flight has only been achieved by two people in the entire history of airbending, namely Zaheer and Guru Laghima. Airbending is the element of freedom, and its season is fall; as depicted in the diagram of the Avatar Symbols and their colors.

Avatar Symbol: Waterbending

Waterbending

Waterbending, as seen in the Avatar Symbols

Waterbending is practiced by some people of the Water Tribe. It is a versatile element; and it is unique in the sense that the original bender of the element was not an animal. buInstead, humans learnt how to bend water from the Moon and its control of the oceans.  Quite similar to the element represented in the Avatar symbols, waterbenders are extremely adaptable and versatile.

Waterbending concentrates on the flow of energy, focusing less on strength and more on turning the opponent’s own energy against them. While a bender’s victory in battle depends on their skill or ingenuity, waterbenders gain a serious advantage or disadvantage depending on the amount of water around them, although highly skilled waterbenders can draw water from anywhere, such as draw humidity from the air and bend the water in living things, especially plants.

Some benders are can bend water from blood or their own sweat, and this shows their skill level. As the element of change, waterbenders can fluidly and quickly alternate from defense to offense, from a wall of ice to a jet of water, turning their opponent’s strength against them. Due to its lunar acclimatization, waterbending is stronger at night and ineffective during a lunar eclipse or when the Moon Spirit dies.

However, to counter their ineffectiveness during a lunar eclipse, waterbenders gain immense power during the peak of the full moon. The opposite of waterbending is firebending, with its relatively stagnant, direct philosophy. The sub-skills for waterbending are healing and bloodbending. Waterbending is the element of change, and its season is winter.

Avatar Symbols: Earthbending

Avatar Symbols: Earthbending

The earthbending symbol. The Avatar Symbols depict the earthbending form as the most rigid of all bending forms and of all the other symbols. This is in line with the element it represents – Earth.

Earthbending originated in the Earth Kingdom with the first earthbenders ever being badgermoles. As we see with the form in the Avatar Symbols, earthbending requires a special connection with the earth that can be achieved through neutral jing, listening and even seemingly doing nothing and waiting for the right moment to strike.

Much like waterbenders, earthbenders gain an advantage or disadvantage in battle based on the amount of earth around them, though the conditions are not as extreme with them as they are with the waterbenders. Because of their element’s stability and its stress on neutral jing, earthbenders stand their ground, absorbing or intercepting attacks until they completely overwhelm their opponents.

Unlike the other bending arts, earthbending’s strength equally lies in both offense and defense. Earthbending is in stark contrast to airbending as airbending’s emphasis is on evasion and mobility while earthbending’s emphasis is on fortitude and strength. The sub-skills for earthbending are seismic sense, metalbending, and lavabending. Earthbending is the element of substance, and its season is spring, as we see in the Avatar Symbols depiction.

Avatar Symbols: Firebending

Firebemding

The firebending symbol as it appears with the other Avatar symbols.

The people of the Fire Nation use Firebending. It is one of the most aggressive bending arts in the history of the four nations. Dragons were the first firebenders and they subsequently taught the Sun Warriors; who then passed down the form to the people who eventually became the Fire Nation.

However, these people eventually deviated from the main source or bending form of firebending; instead of using hatred as the fuel for their bending. They even began hunting down dragons as a rite of passage and to show their bending skills.

As the element of power, firebenders have to be able to maintain a constant source of energy and balance in battle, unleashing a volley of direct, successive attacks. Unlike other benders who depend on external sources of their elements to bend, firebenders do not need to.

They can create fire using their internal heat source in addition to controlling already existent flames. Skilled firebenders are able to fly using powerful jets of flames. Due to its solar affinity, firebending is stronger during the day and at its full power at noon. However, just like the lunar eclipse renders waterbending ineffective, firebendending is rendered completely ineffective during a solar eclipse.

Celestial Affiliations

When a comet passes close to the planet, the power of a firebender is greatly increased. Firebending is relatively simple and has a direct style; which contrasts greatly with the changing and fluid style of waterbending. A notable feature of special firebenders is the ability to create a hotter, blue fire; and the only known Firebender to use or demonstrate this extra powerful flame is the Fire Princess and eventual Fire Lord Azula.

The sub-skills for firebending are combustion bending, as well as the generation and the redirection of lightning. Firebending is the element of power, and its season is summer.
